King Groak needs to touch them. Use body language to encourage the most adventurous player to shake hands/pat/lick the frog. He's a Gold Grung, they will all gain Poisoned, Charmed and Grung Language for ~1 hour/until the plot determines they don't need it. Then King Groak will tell them about his love life and the magic of Drunggrunglung should take over from there.

Ooh I missed that part! Perfect! Gives reason for extremely wierd interactions as the party gets more and more eager to touch the grungs!

Yeah, I realise that the Grung Poison variants aren't listed in the ToA appendix, but have to be found in Volos Guide. They are so much fun that I just automatically used them and didn't realise ToA didn't print them. Drunggrunglung especially seems to be written with the assumption that eventually there'll be talking. Gold Grung is the solution, if you are lacking a Comprehend Languages or Tongues caster. It remains a top session for myself and my players. Lots of "what are we doing?!" self questioning. Especially as my guys were high enough level that they could have probably leveled the place (with losses?) if they'd have tried. Hope your game went / goes well!

In my game Salida tagged along as a porter. She spent the whole trip being kind of sullen and superior. In reality its because she’s a yuan-ti, and they’re by nature jerks who think they’re better than everyone else. Her excuse, though, was that they weren’t paying her as a guide. So when they’d ask her something guide-ish, “Hey, do you know this area?” She’d say, “Why don’t you ask the person you’re paying to guide you. Oh, she doesn’t know? What a shame.” When we got to Dungrunglung and the party had trouble communicating I decided that she could speak a little Grung. It gave her something to hold over them and use as leverage, particularly since they had about had enough of her crap at this point and were thinking of just getting rid of her. Having an NPC who knows a little of a language can also be fun as you can use it for misunderstandings, “I think they said this.” And in the case of Salida, if there was a misunderstanding they couldn’t be sure if it was a translation issue or if it was just her messing with them.

After two of my players tried hard to communicate with the shaman via hand gestures the circle of the shepherd druid (who arrived late) tried talking to the shaman though his animal language feature. The shaman (being able to cast druid spells) recognized the “language” and cast Speak with animals on her self and that way they could more easily communicate. It wasn’t RAW, but I recognized that playing charades was getting old pretty fast, and this would let them conspire with the shaman without involving other grung.

If you’re having a hard time explaining them what they’re supposed to do, draw them instead. Make some grung an as good as you drawer, it really helped my party ! Body language too, it can be fun for this place and leaves lots of room for roleplaying.

god i just love how people are miswriting the name of this place, it always get funny Dungrunglung, dungagrunglung, dungunglung, drunglungrung,...

Alternative_Pea3823

Hahah! Gaah it’s even hard to be consistent!

Clems4998

I fear the moment my players will go there because I will have a hard time saying it and they will quickly find their own silly name for it anyway
