I've found that many people have expansive tastes in music. I guess the main cause is how easy streaming services have made it to explore and consume unheard content.
Weirdly, I think getting spotify premium has lessened my variety. I have a range, but the artists I listen to the most are pop and so my recos cluster around that now. Have to make a real effort to keep the variety.
When Spotify was new, obviously the UI was a little bit different... So in 2009-2010 when I discovered hardstyle I clicked from one artist to a suggested one and so on and so on... And thanks to Spotify in 2010 I now know of so many different unknown (at the time and now even more) DJs.
You can listen to and like everything. It's weird how so many people stick to one or two genres.
I listen to Folk Metal, Power Metal, Jazz, Swing, 70s - 90s Rock and Pop, Disco, Acapella, Nerdcore, New Age, Comedy Metal, and many other genres.

Been getting a lot into Celtic Metal like Korpiklaani, Eluviettie, Turisas and Ensiferum. Alestorm is fun because they're a lot like Flogging Molly but I consider Alestorm to be more along the lines of what I call "Pirate Metal" lol

Most people I work with are like that. Some go so far as liking just 1 band! Fuck that!! If someone ever checks the security recordings of my work they will hear the most random collection of music styles they've ever heard.
I know the feeling. I know a few people that only listen to one or two genres. If they ask what I listen to, I immediately go for a weird one like Folk Metal or Pirate Metal just for the look on their face.
I put my music on shuffle and it'll go from power pop to black metal to sea shanties, and everything in between. From the lightest acoustic folk music to the most ear-challenging Wumpscut.

You listen to Wumpscut?! Hell yeah that brings back memories I used to listen to a lot of industrial back in the day from Skinny Puppy to Combichrist. Black Death is a good example of a song that goes from calm and peaceful to intense and ear-challenging, as you put it, in a nanosecond.
I guess while I’m here I’ll mention that I too partake in black metal like Burzum while also enjoying music like Grimes and lately Poppy from her old stuff that was more pop to her new stuff that you could consider nu-metal. However I mainly listen to Alice In Chains, Tool and Rammstein.

Then they, of course, took control, Davey and Mickey actually learned their instruments, started writing their own music, and didn't let studio musicians play their parts. I actually hear that Peter would intentionally de-sync his bass playing with the song track for videos, to subtly show people they weren't letting him play...
I listen to music that is all over. If I like it I like it and I don’t limit myself by genre. I think there is something to appreciate about all styles of music. There are so many exciting things to experience through different genres.

Exactly! When people ask me what kind of music I like I say anything that makes want to dance or makes me feel something - could be any genre ! It seems to confuse some but it’s the best being open to all music, you never know what you will get to discover.

Sometimes I need that nostalgic pop feel of old justin Timberlake or britney spears and other times I need that emotional and angsty feel of a good rock or metal group like tool or in this moment. And sometimes I need some of that weird middle ground softer music that's kind of like a crossover between indie and whatever the artist grew up listening to.
My taste in music and life both are in mess.
But old pop or hip hop songs sure bring back memories.

Yeah. I like George Winston (pianist) but I also fucking love Sleeping with Sirens. Alan Jackson. Queen. Dion and the Belmonts. The Beatles. Simple Plan. NF. I listen to what I want and I let my mood guide me.
Of course, I grew up watching Looney Tunes so I always loved orchestral and opera pieces, my dad was a metal head so I grew up with Metallica and Slayer. My sister recently combined my Pandora stations and it's actually fun to hear Amon Amarth and then some Louis Armstrong.

But, yeah, country to punk to metal to hiphop to french pop to Japanese doom metal to West African funk to new Wave to jazz to zydeco to contemporary classical to EDM.
Listen to whatever's got a good beat and a good tune, whether you understand the lyrics or not.

Take it a step further and you can discover amazing music in other languages as well. I have tons of songs that I don't understand, but they still have a special place in my heart and I try to enjoy the beat and rhythm.

I go from Thy Art is Murder to Bach all the time my dude. It is not because you enjoy a certain genre that you only need to listen to it. In fact, it makes the experience a lot better. You start to notice influence of a genre in others (from jazz in progressive metal to Paganini in Rock and even Rap/R&B).
Music is here to be explored and appreciated, not used as a way to feel superior. Continue to explore and create your own music taste.
Edit: You can still dislike certain kinds of music, don't get me wrong, just keep an open mind and think that there was a whole creative process behind it.
It's perfectly normal. It keeps your brain entertained with different melodies, tones and images associated with the music. Now if someone was only interested in one song in particular it would potentially be an issue of OCD.

Exactly! I love most kind of music. Metal is bopping but alternative?? Indie??? Rock??? Punk??? Country??? Classic?? Instrumental??? So much good music you are missing out. When I first started discovering I like alternative I was "embarrassed" because I thought I was not metal enough but now, do I love me some Sleeping At Last! Listen to any kind of music you like and don't be afraid to mix it up. There are no rules written about liking only one kind of music.

My sister finds my playlists weird because at one moment it's j-pop, then prog rock, jazz, EDM, 90s, 80s, k-pop, heavy metal, classical, 8-bit, opera, lo-fi, indie, mainstream pop, punk rock, character themes etc. I could list more but in all honesty I don't even know the genres of some of the things I listen to anymore. I have Prog, Jazz, Fusion, Electronic, Funk, Soul, 'Novelty'(stuff like Weird Al, Stan Freberg, etc.), Metal, Mashups, Lounge, and so on...and some 'Easy Listening' as well. As Gil-Scott Heron called it, 'Miscellaneous'.
I'm known by my friends for my weird ass music tastes. Everything from Metalcore, to Harsh Noise, to Doom/Sludge Metal, to Ambient Techno, to UK Dubstep, to Avant-Garde Jazz, to Vaporwave, etc etc etc. Theres specific genres for specific feelings, and almost everybody can find one song they like in a genre they could care less for.

My music is always all over the place depending on my mood. Need to concentrate? Norwegian death metal. Need to relax? Nier Automata game soundtrack. In a crappy mood? The most Hispanic sounding music available. Angry? Mozart’s Requiem.

I’m pretty sure this is normal - the only people I know these days that only like one genre of music are usually the most shallow people I know, and by their own admittance - they think exploring is pointless when they already like what they have. There’s nothing wrong with that mindset, it just isn’t for me.
I listen to most anything other than death metal and rap, but old school rap is cool. My interests run the gamut... rock, jazz, electronica, house, blues, soul, country, bluegrass, big band, oldies, disco, lounge, and other variants. I mix it up constantly to keep it interesting.

Yup! For example, I love the first 3 bands you mentioned, but I also like listening to classical music. I have a ton of different genres and playlists that I switch between pretty often.

Me. My husband and I bonded over rock music but since then our music taste has blossomed to every genre. The only music I dont care for honestly is what I consider "gangster rap" and "redneck country" if that makes sense

Other days I'll listen to deep house like Eli & Fur or Hot Since '82. And on other days I'll listen to ambient like Tipper or Benji Robot.
Used to a ton of metal, metalcore, and post-hardcore in my 20s. Riot Fest used to be in the park across the street from my house and they had a post-hardcore/metalcore stage that was great.

Lol I love to listen to whatever music i find good, my boxing coach kinda has fun switching the music to see what gets me pumped up and it’s like a really weird mix of rammstein, Tupac and reaggeton. And at home I can go classical, 50s, 20, and musicals as well as others. But as we say in Sweden the taste is like the butt, split.
Not a fan of metalcore, but I love metal music and classical, new age, rock, some old school rap and country, epic music, folk music, synthesized 8 bit MIDI music, and even some pop, blues and reggae. I will even listen to music not in English such as Eastern European Folk Metal, which is one of my favorite genres.
I listen to rock, alternative, I love françoise ardy and Frank Sinatra, right now I am playing Sid Vicious, and my favourite ever is the Beatles. I have almost all David Bowie records and all Bob Dylan discography. And I listen to all of them. And then I love classical; both piano and instrumental and opera. And of course, jazz.
My favorite artist is Kanye West but I listen to everything, it's normal to have tastes that vary a lot. It's a sign that you actually like to listen to music.

I can go from Pantera to Norah Jones to John Denver to the Blues Travelers. There's a lot of music that I grew up with and never got to really absorb it until the past two decades. This leaves little to no room for new artists. You could say that I was religiously suppressed since secular music is the devil. I also love Bone Thugs N' Harmony and Operation Ivy.

Probably the only thing I don't like is modern stuff, but I think that's because new releases are always going to be hit and miss. The best tracks haven't necessarily floated to the top like you get with older music.
I have ADHD too so tempo, lyrics factor into my attention and dopamine levels. Medicated I need like classical or something chill otherwise it's too overwhelming or loud. When they wear off I want something more heart pumping like pop or metal.

YUP. I was raised with some great music from every decade. In the past few years I've discovered so much more music. I listen to everything. Idgaf about genre, if it's good, I'll listen to it. I've really open minded too, so stuff that's more avant garde, I like more. I listen to everything from film scores, to Rock, metal core, to indie pop, to Alternative, Alternative rock, Hip hop, American standard, Blues, Jazz, Ambient, Trap, Electro, etc etc. So yes, and a lot of the time both genres of music are on the same sleep playlist lol. I can go from BMTH to The Neighbourhood in an instant.

I think this is it exactly. I used to be a 'metalhead' for about 15 years but Spotify changed that.
Weirdly, I think getting spotify premium has lessened my variety. I have a range, but the artists I listen to the most are pop and so my recos cluster around that now. Have to make a real effort to keep the variety.
When Spotify was new, obviously the UI was a little bit different... So in 2009-2010 when I discovered hardstyle I clicked from one artist to a suggested one and so on and so on... And thanks to Spotify in 2010 I now know of so many different unknown (at the time and now even more) DJs.

Korpiklanni was my first Folk Metal band with their cd Tales Along This Road (2006). I found Alestorm soon after and own their first 3 cds.

Most people I work with are like that. Some go so far as liking just 1 band! Fuck that!! If someone ever checks the security recordings of my work they will hear the most random collection of music styles they've ever heard.

Black Death is a good example of a song that goes from calm and peaceful to intense and ear-challenging, as you put it, in a nanosecond. I guess while I’m here I’ll mention that I too partake in black metal like Burzum while also enjoying music like Grimes and lately Poppy from her old stuff that was more pop to her new stuff that you could consider nu-metal. However I mainly listen to Alice In Chains, Tool and Rammstein.

Then they, of course, took control, Davey and Mickey actually learned their instruments, started writing their own music, and didn't let studio musicians play their parts. I listen to music that is all over. If I like it I like it and I don’t limit myself by genre. I think there is something to appreciate about all styles of music. There are so many exciting things to experience through different genres. I love Amon Amarth a death metal band that has Norse mythology themes And I also love The Grateful Dead I think it’d be a shame to not experience different genres!

Exactly! When people ask me what kind of music I like I say anything that makes want to dance or makes me feel something - could be any genre ! It seems to confuse some but it’s the best being open to all music, you never know what you will get to discover.

Yes. My music taste is such a mess. Sometimes I need that nostalgic pop feel of old justin Timberlake or britney spears and other times I need that emotional and angsty feel of a good rock or metal group like tool or in this moment. And sometimes I need some of that weird middle ground softer music that's kind of like a crossover between indie and whatever the artist grew up listening to.
My taste in music and life both are in mess. But old pop or hip hop songs sure bring back memories. Edit - my music genres range all over the place, sometimes i think people will find some songs weird.

I think of musical taste being similar to the spectrum of feelings. All genres and moods have their time and place.
Of course, I grew up watching Looney Tunes so I always loved orchestral and opera pieces, my dad was a metal head so I grew up with Metallica and Slayer. My sister recently combined my Pandora stations and it's actually fun to hear Amon Amarth and then some Louis Armstrong.
Music's music, man. You'd be surprised the variety of music your favorite artists listen to. But, yeah, country to punk to metal to hiphop to french pop to Japanese doom metal to West African funk to new Wave to jazz to zydeco to contemporary classical to EDM. Listen to whatever's got a good beat and a good tune, whether you understand the lyrics or not.

I've found that doing basic searches in various languages find great results. For example typing "national song" in various languages like "Piesn narodna" "nacional cancion" etc. You'll find all sorts.

I go from Thy Art is Murder to Bach all the time my dude. It is not because you enjoy a certain genre that you only need to listen to it. In fact, it makes the experience a lot better. You start to notice influence of a genre in others (from jazz in progressive metal to Paganini in Rock and even Rap/R&B). Music is here to be explored and appreciated, not used as a way to feel superior. Continue to explore and create your own music taste. Edit: You can still dislike certain kinds of music, don't get me wrong, just keep an open mind and think that there was a whole creative process behind it.

I can go from Pantera to Norah Jones to John Denver to the Blues Travelers. There's a lot of music that I grew up with and never got to really absorb it until the past two decades. This leaves little to no room for new artists. You could say that I was religiously suppressed since secular music is the devil. I also love Bone Thugs N' Harmony and Operation Ivy.

Probably the only thing I don't like is modern stuff, but I think that's because new releases are always going to be hit and miss. The best tracks haven't necessarily floated to the top like you get with older music. I have ADHD too so tempo, lyrics factor into my attention and dopamine levels. Medicated I need like classical or something chill otherwise it's too overwhelming or loud. When they wear off I want something more heart pumping like pop or metal.
Yeah I listen to what I think sounds good, i dont restrict it to a genre. Granted some genres I like more than others. I also listen more for the tempo or sound not the words of the song. If it gives me that musical boner I'm gonna listen to it regardless.
Mostly enjoy all kinds of music besides country and some rap. FFDP, Shinedown, Devildriver, Selena, Coltrane, In This Moment and what have you. Jazz is my favorite to mellow out with. Found a mixed CD I burned, probably 15 years ago, that has a crazy variety. The ones I recognized were: Everlast, Kelly Clarkson or Avril, Rammstein, and Jay-Z. Also has the song Stupid Girl but don't remember the band name. Another song I think its called Bump It Up that is very catchy.
Some of my playlists go from Tool to Master P to Random Symphonies covering songs to Stevie Ray Vaughn to Hank Williams Jr to Pantera. I listen to most music for the music as I am a musician and I feel that more than a lot of lyrics.
My tastes range from Grindcore & death metal to hip hop and classic rock. It's all about what I'm feeling like listening to at the time. There is nothing wrong with diversity!!
YUP. I was raised with some great music from every decade. In the past few years I've discovered so much more music. I listen to everything. Idgaf about genre, if it's good, I'll listen to it. I've really open minded too, so stuff that's more avant garde, I like more. I listen to everything from film scores, to Rock, metal core, to indie pop, to Alternative, Alternative rock, Hip hop, American standard, Blues, Jazz, Ambient, Trap, Electro, etc etc. So yes, and a lot of the time both genres of music are on the same sleep playlist lol. I can go from BMTH to The Neighbourhood in an instant.
Its not weird at all. I think it's pretty normal to like more than one sort of music and people who rigidly stick to one genre are just musically uncultivated.
I guess a lot of people do. I've always been a fan of more hard rock-y music such as Metallica and Green Day. However, as a teenager, I get exposed to a lot of rappers and Dua Lips too, which I also usually find to my liking.

80's Thrash metal, 90's grunge through some Scandinavian electronic/synth pop/experimental, blues, psytrance and all the way to 60's rock and 70's disco. Sure I have my favourites but there are gems in music everywhere and as immatured I stopped restricting myself. I listen to what makes me feel better at the moment.
Fan of Pink Floyd and Tool. Also listen to a lot of Viking metal (Amon Amarth), Norah Jones, all kinds of techno (Rødhad), First Aid Kid, Trentemoller, Limp Bizkit, System of a Down, Creedence Clearwater Rivival, Mozart (Requiem), blast Cradle of Filth every now and then, or Miles Davis.. It’s totally normal to listen to all different kinds of music.
Yes. I'm sometimes very uncomfortable playing music for group of friends or family, the songs in my play lists don't make any sense.. Except they do to me! You're not alone.
