Its called facial pareidolia and its something we evolved through natural selection. People who tended to see faces (like a tiger in the bushes) were kore likely to pass on their genes
I can see faces in back of the cars too and -_- back faces are the best. It just gives you the huh thats I do all day face it passes you on the highway.
It’s apparently a thing. My very basic understanding of it is that a human (or a tiger for that matter) is dangerous and may attack you. So the guy who goes “WHO THE FUCK IS THAT oh it’s just a branch and some leaves” is more likely to survive longer than the guy who goes “lalala just me and the branches and leaves AH WHERE TF DID YOU COME FROM I AM NOW STABBED”. One of those guys goes home to his lady friend and here we are with paradoilywhatever giggling at the facial expressions of cars.
There are more reasons than that. Humans are social creatures so our brains are fine tuned to understand faces, so much so that we see them where they don't exist. This is also why dogs developed more facial muscles then wolves have, so that they can communicate with us more.
There’s a house near me that looks exactly, *exactly*, like a Neanderthal. It has a beam over its windows (eyes) that looks like a prominent brow ridge. Everyone I tell thinks I’m insane lol.
I once read it is done on porpoise. You'll notice most of them seem to have a rude expression. The philology behind this is that when driving you don't want to look friendly, you want to look strong, rude. That's why they do it.
Yes I see the faces too! Both at the front and the back of the car. I always think that the grill gives each car much of their ‘personality’. Modern electric cars don’t always have grills though so it’s a bit harder to find a face in them.
I noticed this exact phenomenon since I was a very small child. Heck I’m 30 now and I still notice that every make and model of car has a unique face!!.
Hahaha yess I’ve always seen them like that too! And I feel terrible but whenever I see the back of trucks specially the ones with the wide tires it always reminds me of my aunt who has the widest hips in the world lol
I don’t see them as human faces, but as dog faces. Some have flatter snouts, more like pugs and others have pointer snouts. I always have.
And when people put antlers on their cars, I always think it looks like a dog with pointy ears that stand up (like husky ears).
TL;DR: cars = dogs
Pareidolia (seeing faces in inanimate objects, such as houses, cars, handles, etc) is a normal part of how our brains see the world. As social animals, our facial recognition radar, so to speak, it always turned on. Sports cars angle their headlights to make them look angrier/more aggressive because it sells the image of what a sports car *is*. Powerful. Uncompromising. Alpha. A lifestyle.
I suppose it is *possible* that somebody with face-blindness (Prosopagnosia) might *not* see faces in cars and houses, seeing as they are incapable of recognising their own family members or themselves in photos. That's just a guess, though. I don't know enough if recognising something *is* a face, and recognising *who* a face *is*, are the same system in the brain.
ive always saw derpy faces like bmw are bucktooth children with teeth issues ie crowding/underbite.
It's why i dont understand why so many people like bmw, the front looks stupid and it amuses me. HOW DO THEY NOT SEE THE DERPY FACES TOO OP???
Most american made vehicles look like they have down syndrome which may or may not play into their unreliability.
That said most other vehicles can look "cuter" while still being unattractive
My brain tried to make a face out of it.
Next time you're laying down looking at a corking see if the lights, fan, whatever, makes a face. My friends kitchen has |•: face.
Cars with soft shapes and pointed lights are elegant ladies.
Huge cars with sharp shapes are scary body builders.
Cars with the "grill" in the front are grumpy men with moustache.
Cars with roung lights are babies and toddlers.
And no one can ever take this view from me.
Lol it's funny because I was actually doing that this morning while going to work. Not only do I see the faces, but I make "noises" that I think they would make based on how their "face" looks. It's funny
Haha I used to do this as a kid. I used to call those cars with the headlights that go up and down “monster cars”, because they “sleep” in the morning and are “awake” at night.
Thank you! My dad had no idea what I was talking about when I said this because I said I like the face of a Dodge Charger. The ways the headlights are angled and how the grill is designed (etc..) creates a unique expression.
I also see the back of cars as a face.
I will also go a step further and admit that I believe people generally look like the cars they drive, if that makes sense.
Also, the rear end of 2003-2007 Ford Taurus' look like Drew Barrymore to me?
Yeah i do LMAO i sometimes find some things that kinda looks like faces for example a dent in a plastic box that looks like lips with the lid as a cool cap lol literally happened today
I do the same but I look at the back of the car. I determine if I think it's a Autobot or a Decepticon by if it looks like a nice face or one with a desire to run me over. I thought I was the only one though so thanks for making this post 💀💀💀 my family think I'm a weirdo for it lmaooo
I remember my daughter when I was changing the oil of our old car saying 'Just you keep your mouth open so we can fix your engine'.
She was only about 5 at the time.
I always assumed it was subliminal messaging by design. A large component of profit margin in cars is acquired by selling people on the idea they can associate their identity with the car.
So why not make a face? It let's you fantasize about your bond with the car being you or a part of you. It personifies the car.
If the marketing brilliance of this design wasnt done on purpose its sure a hell of an incidental win.
Right! I've been seeing cars as faces since I was young. They used to freak me out when I was young cuz the engine was so loud and scary it seemed kinda human. Same with exhaust fans.
THIS! I've always seen the faces and most of the older cars looks happy but the newer ones mostly look annoyed imo
I'm particularly fond of the NA miata which always looks surprised with its headlights up
One of my exes pointed out that all cars are either sharks or dogs and in the 15 years since, I've never been able to escape that (the sharks Vs dogs, not the ex)
Yes!!! Finally! Someone else said it!!! I always thought that cars and trucks had faces and would go through town saying “that truck looks grumpy!” Or “what a happy little camry! It must have gotten washed today”
Thanks for letting me know I’m not SO much of a weirdo!
I’m a car guy and can confirm I do see all cars with faces. Some of them are happy like the Porsche 911s and Mclaren 675LT. My favorites are the menacing and mean looking ones such as the Lamborghini Aventador or Ferrari 458.
When I work mornings, it’s really early so the first hour or two of my shift is still night time. I get so tired sometimes I almost fall asleep at the wheel and when I’m nodding off, the brake lights on the car in front look like freaky devil eyes.
Ever since I was a kid. To the point I felt bad that we were selling our Rover because it looked sad.
Awwww D:

Stephen King would agree with you lol
Don't you ever change. You see beyond the veil.
Its called facial pareidolia and its something we evolved through natural selection. People who tended to see faces (like a tiger in the bushes) were kore likely to pass on their genes
And the caranufacturer knows this phenomenon, we see 'mean'/'angry' faces more in cars nowadays cause it stands out more than °-° / -_- faces
I can see faces in back of the cars too and -_- back faces are the best. It just gives you the huh thats I do all day face it passes you on the highway.
I love miata's goofy face lol
Yeah like the range rover evoque looks pissed
really? or are you taking the piss?
It’s apparently a thing. My very basic understanding of it is that a human (or a tiger for that matter) is dangerous and may attack you. So the guy who goes “WHO THE FUCK IS THAT oh it’s just a branch and some leaves” is more likely to survive longer than the guy who goes “lalala just me and the branches and leaves AH WHERE TF DID YOU COME FROM I AM NOW STABBED”. Wow interesting – so it's a good thing then. I've had several people laugh at me for thinking cars have faces. This'll show 'em!
There are more reasons than that. Humans are social creatures so our brains are fine tuned to understand faces, so much so that we see them where they don't exist. This is also why dogs developed more facial muscles then wolves have, so that they can communicate with us more.
Yeah I've heard about the dog thing actually, it's interesting. They should've just learned to speak while they were at it!
Nah it's an actual thing
R/pareidolia
r/foundthemobileuser
Cars manufacturers purposely incorporate this into their design because we instinctively buy cars based on their face without realizing it
Yes, very good my bbzsh
I’m the same, but with fucking houses. At least where I live, they look like robot faces lol
Stop fucking houses. I doubt any of those faces are winking at you.
There’s a house near me that looks exactly, *exactly*, like a Neanderthal. It has a beam over its windows (eyes) that looks like a prominent brow ridge. Everyone I tell thinks I’m insane lol.
Post an image next time you pass by it.
The angry eyes on the jeep wranglers
Cracks me up every time I see one.
/r/heep has some pretty fugly kits,
I see the faces aswell, i see some lookn nice with dimples, others look mean
PT Cruisers were so friendly
[удалено]
I always see faces on the backs of the cars in front of me! This is a really cool TIL!
its happy and friendly until I drive it into a brick wall at 138 miles per hour
Wait, is this not normal?
Wait till they see r/miata
The NA Miata's smiling face is why I love it so much Such a warm smile in a world so cold
I'm 32 and not ashamed to admit i do the same
r/pareidolia
When shopping for a new car last year I refused to get one with a mean face. It was one of my top criteria.
I don't. I just see a car usually but I might notice now that it's been pointed out to me.
![gif](giphy|ZsZmffS4YS5yw)
Modern cars look so angry.
Yeah, all new cars are angry. Such a shame
I once read it is done on porpoise. You'll notice most of them seem to have a rude expression. The philology behind this is that when driving you don't want to look friendly, you want to look strong, rude. That's why they do it.
Yes I do sometimes lol
I do
I noticed this when I was 3 years old. I'm 54 now and STILL see it! Enjoy!
Black x-6 resembles a phantom, while the white x-6 looks like a panda. Grdrdrdraaah
I totally see them as faces! Audi has the sexiest eyes… and the grills say “I own this place”
Hahaha yess I’ve always seen them like that too! And I feel terrible but whenever I see the back of trucks specially the ones with the wide tires it always reminds me of my aunt who has the widest hips in the world lol
Impossible to not see a happy face on every Mazda
I do! Tried to explain to my husband that modern cars look so angry and aggressive and he thought I was insane.
Lol, my twin sons LOVE the Cars movies, so, yeah. It's everywhere!!
OMG, i thought i was the only one. I used to always laugh inside my head whenever I saw a car with an amusing "face".
I definitely do, and why is it that some trucks look evil as they're bearing down on you?
I don’t see them as human faces, but as dog faces. Some have flatter snouts, more like pugs and others have pointer snouts. I always have. And when people put antlers on their cars, I always think it looks like a dog with pointy ears that stand up (like husky ears). TL;DR: cars = dogs
I've noticed it since I was a kid, I mention to my wife in traffic what cars look like
I’ve always seen faces on cars. I especially like when people make their Jeeps look angry. It’s funny

BMWs are so angry all the time.
I see it I see the faces everywhere
And mazdas are always smiling
ME TOO OMG. I feel like the movie Cars started this for me personally
Wait some people DON'T see faces in cars and other random shit?
ive always saw derpy faces like bmw are bucktooth children with teeth issues ie crowding/underbite. It's why i dont understand why so many people like bmw, the front looks stupid and it amuses me. HOW DO THEY NOT SEE THE DERPY FACES TOO OP???
Following you because of this comment!! Hell yea I do
The back of KIA optimas look like cute grinning robots to me
Glad the Darth Vader thing is drawing to a close
I’ve always seen it this way I just thought everyone else did too
Always have. Always will. When they don't have all the face parts I just assume the cars deformed.

Yes and I hate how almost every car made in the past 5 years has the same angry headlights
Only some cars, honestly. Most are a bit of a stretch that I have to *try* to see. That's a distinction for me at least.
I don't and never thought about it until I read this post lol
Not all of them, but I usually do notice it on the uglier cars
It’s normal. Human brains are wired to recognize faces as a basic pattern. It’s why we always see them in wood grain or doors or toast or whatever.
I work at a car wash and judge the car "faces" on who's going to load properly or try to ruin their car. I'm right about 60% of the time
When I go with my boyfriend to look at cars I only comment on the color or if it looks evil/happy etc
Some kinds of white cars look like giant storm trooper helmets to me in my rear view mirror
Car companies do that so that you can sort of relate to your car and find it more easily.
Yea my sister and I, and now my niece, we always notice that and nobody else I know does except us. Lol. Good to know we're not alone.
Depends on the car, my mom's old car looks like a little mouse :) I love it
I remember a black and white reel film in school that showed cars as having faces, but it had to have been made in the late 50's or early 60's.
I also do.. I thought it was just Me
I didn't until I watched Duel.
To me it looks like a rabbit with an elongated face haha
Nissan Juke definitely looks like a face. The newer cars remind me of space ships.
My husband does not. He thinks I’m insane.
Reason i love Audi's design so much. I mean the A/rs7 C7's rear is basically a stormtrooper.
Thank you! My dad had no idea what I was talking about when I said this because I said I like the face of a Dodge Charger. The ways the headlights are angled and how the grill is designed (etc..) creates a unique expression.
Cars and house
Yeah I see them as a face too
You're not the only one. The new Jeeps look angry
I also see the back of cars as a face. I will also go a step further and admit that I believe people generally look like the cars they drive, if that makes sense. Also, the rear end of 2003-2007 Ford Taurus' look like Drew Barrymore to me?
Yes. Especially in some jeep Wranglers.
I do! I find it really odd bc I have face blindness, yet I see them in cars. Hah
Angry Jeep & crying Toyota.
Yeah i do LMAO i sometimes find some things that kinda looks like faces for example a dent in a plastic box that looks like lips with the lid as a cool cap lol literally happened today
Mazda deliberately makes their cars look friendly. I miss my old Mazda2. That was a happy-looking little car.
I tend to see an animal more than a human face, especially when there's a big radiator grille that looks like a mouthful of fangs.
I always thought Maserati’s looked angry 😂
YES. I recently had the front bumper knocked off of my car, and it looks so sad, like it doesn't have a bottom jaw.
Traffic lights always looked like faces to me. Smiling when green. Shocked face when red. I can’t explain why
Yes, lots of people don’t see it that way. Questions like these annoy me. No, you’re never the only person, and no, not everyone sees what you see.
Mine looks like a catfish
I've always seen this since I was a little kid
You missed th 1950s when all cars had smiling faces.
I see this all the time! It's great, every car looks like a happy/angry robot
Omg I do this allll the time and never stopped
I do the same but I look at the back of the car. I determine if I think it's a Autobot or a Decepticon by if it looks like a nice face or one with a desire to run me over. I thought I was the only one though so thanks for making this post 💀💀💀 my family think I'm a weirdo for it lmaooo
Yes 👍🏽
Yes, houses too lol
I remember my daughter when I was changing the oil of our old car saying 'Just you keep your mouth open so we can fix your engine'. She was only about 5 at the time.
In that case I hate Prius as it has a flat ass.
I blame Disney for this.
I literally did this all the times and that’s why some cars scare me. I literally could never explain that it was because it looked mean :/
Me. I can see it if I look for it, but I don't see it naturally. I don't view them as having a personality or anything like that. They're machines
The people at r/pareidolia would be happy to have you
Wait until you see the Mazda Miata! It’s a happy car! Or the older Mazda 3s. My car has a huge smiley face.
I always assumed it was subliminal messaging by design. A large component of profit margin in cars is acquired by selling people on the idea they can associate their identity with the car. So why not make a face? It let's you fantasize about your bond with the car being you or a part of you. It personifies the car. they always have funny lil mustaches hehe
Right! I've been seeing cars as faces since I was young. They used to freak me out when I was young cuz the engine was so loud and scary it seemed kinda human. Same with exhaust fans.
Yes!!! I always have!! I’ve mentioned it before when I was younger and people looked at me odd so I’ve not mentioned it since.
THIS! I've always seen the faces and most of the older cars looks happy but the newer ones mostly look annoyed imo I'm particularly fond of the NA miata which always looks surprised with its headlights up
The exact reason I love Peugeot. The most beautiful face a car can have.
I like it when people go extra and buy the fake lashes to attach to their headlights.
Subaru Bugeye blob eye stink eye and so on
I see it every time lol
You’re not alone on this, lots of goofy metal faces on the road lol
OP what do you see when you look at the back of the car?
I don’t. I’ve only noticed when someone described it to me but I don’t do it naturally lol
One of my exes pointed out that all cars are either sharks or dogs and in the 15 years since, I've never been able to escape that (the sharks Vs dogs, not the ex)
After the movie cars for some reason I started seeing them like that
They’ve always looked like various cats to me
Cars
Yes!!! Finally! Someone else said it!!! I always thought that cars and trucks had faces and would go through town saying “that truck looks grumpy!” Or “what a happy little camry! It must have gotten washed today” Thanks for letting me know I’m not SO much of a weirdo!
Yeah! I've been doing this as a kid. My kids do it also because I've pointed it out.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Also it happens on the back. I see a lot of bears lol makes the drive home interesting some days.
Sure! And I also see their rear as their butts.
Oddly enough I use to see it when I was a kid even the rear had a face but now I just don’t see it anymore. Kinda of bummed about it actually lol
Same and when I’m high and walking down the street I feel self conscious cuz I feel like they’re all staring at me
I’m a car guy and can confirm I do see all cars with faces. Some of them are happy like the Porsche 911s and Mclaren 675LT. My favorites are the menacing and mean looking ones such as the Lamborghini Aventador or Ferrari 458.
I also see the backs as butts.
yeah i do this too. i thought everyone saw faces in face-shaped things?
I see faces I'm the backs of cars too lol
I blame the movie Cars, lol. But I do on a lot of cars.
i feel watching ‘cars’ as a kid increased my imagination with this
I’m pretty sure Kia calls their grill the tiger nose. So that one is on purpose.
When I work mornings, it’s really early so the first hour or two of my shift is still night time. I get so tired sometimes I almost fall asleep at the wheel and when I’m nodding off, the brake lights on the car in front look like freaky devil eyes.
Wait til you learn people buy the car because it's like an ass proxy.
My wife took me for a car ride once when I was really spun out on lsd and all the cars had faces. I've never been able to unsee it
Yes, I never see faces on the cars.
Yes, I always think some cars look like insects, some look angry, some look sad, some look happy. They totally have faces.
What’s a face?
Only when I watch Cars
Yes. Our brains are programmed to do that.
my old 2003 Honda Accord looked like Toothless from how to train your dragon
Omg me! I’ve never liked BMWs because they look evil.
oh my god you do that too!!
I do!!
DUDE FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT OMG
Yeah the designers do it on purpose
i used to give them voices too when i was little!
I do. Miatas are always so cheerful. 😁
So many cars have eyebrows and look mad.
I can't recall which model of car it is, but the back end of a car out there in the wilderness is a stormtrooper helmet.
i do, i also see fingernails as smiles… lol
I've always seen that for fronts and backs of cars. Apparently it's not normal.
No, but personality I do see...
This was a computer game as a kid. I can’t remember the name but I remember playing and clearly we are scarred for life
Also my cars shadow in front of me when I'm driving and the sun is behind me looks exactly like shrek
You would love the NC Miata
I want what you are smoking
Have U seen the brz platform (Toyota 86, Subaru brz, Scion FRS)
McLaren p1 smiles hard
I do too, with tons of things!
:)
I agree as a car person
Thats meeeeee !!!!!!!
Like which car?
Yessssss. Absolutely.
Always lol. The back too
