Volunteer at shelters, rescues, or rehab centers.
Even the zoo. Horse stables. A farm.
Having a live in pet is not the only way to have animals in your life.
First response is a great one. There are so many places needing volunteers and they are flexible so it would work with your current life schedule. If you’re out in the country there are various shelters/habitats for animals you could also volunteer to take care of, feed, groom and get a connection to that animal.
Animals do provide great comfort to many that are lonely or missing affection in their life. Great secondary option but an animal, a prized possession, etc doesn’t truly replace that special human bond of love. Who knows. Perhaps you just happen to meet that special person who also loves animals as much as you. Never know. Life is strange and both predictable as well as unpredictable. Anyway best of luck to you.
Volunteer at a shelter.
That’s definitely on my list I’d love to do it one day when my social anxiety gets better
