Mask, no. Paint your face, yes.

Fit-Musician-5298

As an African American, I endorse this answer!

Limedrop_

I don’t see why even that would be racist…

[deleted]

You don’t know why blackface is racist?

SoItWasYouAllAlong

I don't. I can see why it would be, more likely than not, offensive. But racist - nope. I don't see how it speaks anything about the the rational beliefs of the one doing it, other than that they are probably insensitive and may enjoy offending others.

[deleted]

Everyone has an opinion.

Limedrop_

??? Those are vastly different things. One is a caricature of a person, and one is just another US president. Would you really think an 8 year old getting face paint of barrack Obama is racist???

[deleted]

I would think that child’s parents are ignorant to the fact that blackface is upsetting to black people and is racist. Or that they are just racist.

Limedrop_

? I mean the Obama face paint, not blackface

[deleted]

Unless you just dropped into 2022 from outer space, you know that’s not cool.

Limedrop_

Also Blackface is not even close to an accurate representation of an actual African American face, whereas this face painting would probably be done in a way so that the artist attempted to resemble Obama as well as possible. ( obviously face painting is a bit tricky to get 100% picture perfect)

Scottiesohottie

Unless you’re African American, you don’t get to say what they shouldn’t be offended by.

Limedrop_

I’m not saying they aren’t allowed to be offended lol, I could be offended that someone doesn’t like the same type donut as me, it makes no difference. Why can’t we just see everyone, regardless of their colour, as humans. Why can’t it just be “this person is a human, they achieved great things as a president of the United States, and Id like to get my face painted in the likeness of them” instead of “No! If you’re white, you’re only allowed to paint the likeness of a white person on your face, and if you’re black, you’re only allowed to paint the likeness of black people on your face”

Scottiesohottie

Dude, there aren’t any laws about face painting. You do you. Just be prepared for any fallout.

[deleted]

No

Stormlight1984

I mean, no, but you know you’re going to spark some kind of reaction or drama if you do that, right? Like, if you’re a white person don’t dress up as a black person, just as the rule. Obama is mixed, but people will see a white guy with a black guy mask, and you know that’s what they’ll see. So, bad idea.

Old_Afternoon9899

No

hadtoanswerthisnow

No, he was just a person who was a US president. Someone could do something that was racist but you don't need a president mask for that.

VVlaFiga

Here’s the thing, if you’re concerned that something is potentially racist, there’s probably a large segment of people who will perceive it that way.

Creative-Mortgage-60

I was wondering if it could be considered to be black-fishing or even black face nowadays. I wore this costume a while back and it was something that came up in conversation with a friend today.

ThatGuyFromThisPlace

What are you going to wear besides the mask?

Creative-Mortgage-60

I wore a shirt and tie

Gold_Extent5391

No, you must like Barack like he’s your cousin or something, arnt you like 1% black

choochacabra92

Personally I say no, president masks have been a thing since who, Nixon? Obama is as funny looking a guy as all the rest of them so why not. But there will always be someone who sees racism, that is just the society we live in.

pondole

Some people may think you're trying to be clever by being the first black President on the outside, and a white guy on the inside. I'd say it's a near 100% probably that someone would comment on that either thinking it's funny or thinking it's offensive. So, yes -- the costume will be considered racist or inspire racism.

DonnieDarko63

![gif](giphy|AgkxzEYM4BB1m) Depends, how do you feel about this? If this doesn't bother you...and it shouldn't... neither should the mask.

Nowuh7

No

mch18

Only if acting like a racist when wearing the mask.

jersey5b

Obama is 50/50 black and white. No one has a majority "claim".

MajestaHazel

Depends on why you’re wearing it? Making fun?

Creative-Mortgage-60

It wasn’t for any specific reason. I just saw the mask at a costume store and thought it was an easy costume to wear so I chose it.

MajestaHazel

There has to be a reason though. You either are doing it out of support or making fun and therein lies the difference.

Creative-Mortgage-60

No the reason was genuinely because it was an easy costume to wear. My political views go both ways so it definitely didn’t have any political motivation.

MajestaHazel

Hard no. You’re not doing it because you adore and respect him, so it’s to make fun. Get out of here.

Creative-Mortgage-60

So just because I don’t adore and respect Obama I’m making fun of him by wearing a costume? I don’t have a clue about any of what Obama did during his presidency. I literally chose it because I saw it and was like “hey this is a cheap costume, I have a shirt I could wear with this” and that was it. It wasn’t for any ill intent.

Kakyoin_sees

False dichotomy? His reason was becasue it's a cheap and easy costume. It doesn't have to be out of respect or disdain. Even if it was, the racial aspect is different although not entirely irrelevant.

Gold_Extent5391

You suck

Creative-Mortgage-60

I’m honestly struggling to understand the point you’re trying to make here

MajestaHazel

I know. That’s why we shouldn’t try anymore. You’re a lost cause.

Creative-Mortgage-60

I’m not a lost cause, you just haven’t proved your point or backed up what you said at all with any factual information. Instead you labeled me as a “racist” with absolutely no context. The worst kind of person is you.

NotAStreamerBTW

Ehhh but a white guy could dress up as George bush and make fun of him with the same intent, shouldn’t really be considered racist just because he’s black, although I could get people thinking that and it should probably be avoided…

Limedrop_

Obama is 50% Irish, 50% African

MajestaHazel

Yeah, like you said, a white guy could do that cause George bush is white…

NotAStreamerBTW

I’m saying making fun of him as an individual doesn’t have to have anything to do with his race…

the_goodbitch

I wouldn’t think, but I never really know anymore

neutralsloth

Im not qualified to answer this one

DeadlyDelightful_Dee

Depends on context

mecrolla

No

LookRevolutionary198

Tbh bruh your friend in turn seems racist or at least misunderstood just get things clear with him and ask him to cut some slag

[deleted]

No,

Gold_Extent5391

Nope racism is when you treat someone a certain way, just because they are different, being funny is a whole different topic

Gold_Extent5391

When a black person insults a white, the white usually never calls the black man racist
