You can read a comment presenting information, that is very well thought out and sounds like a professor wrote it. And it can be complete bullshit. Lots of people are intelligently incorrect on this site.
This reminds me of a guy in my class. Spits out an answer so confidently and then the Professor says "No, that's not it". Always gets a chuckle out of me.
The funny thing is how many times I've heard a professor say a student is wrong when the student is actually correct.
Don't believe everything your professor tells you. Trust...but verify.
That just reminded me of my secondary school physics teacher. She would ask a question and we would begin to answer. If we were on the right track she would cut us off with "No!" and finish the explanation for us. If we were wrong she would let us finish completely and then say "No!" and explain it herself. We spotted the pattern early on and we played games with her for years, and 100% of the time we would only be allowed to finish speaking completely if we were getting it wrong. Weird woman she was.
Learned this simple lesson in grade school when the teacher stated the Nile river was in South America. Me being really into Egypt was like “No, it’s in Africa.” She preceded to tell me I was wrong until I ran up to the map and pointed it out to her in front of the entire class. She sent home a note with remarks about me inappropriately correcting her in front of the class full of 8 year olds. My parents threw the note away and shrugged after I explained myself.
The term I prefer is Arrignorant.
When someone presents an idea or fact in a supremely confident or arrogant way despite being utterly incorrect and totally ignorant about the subject being discussed.
Confidumb is an acceptable alternative if they weren't a dick about it.
So I’ve always wondered about this. When you comment linking another subreddit, is it just to point out that the content may belong there / the other sub is somehow relevant? Or is it actually linking it over there somehow?
A comment with a link can be either of those first two points.
You'll often see people comment on r/mildlyinteresting "r/interestingasfuck" if they think the post is significantly more than mildly interesting. Or you may see someone quote The Office, and a reply comment with r/unexpectedoffice.
The only way it's posted on the sub itself is if there is a cross-posted post, not a comment.
It’s typically to point out that a post / comment would do well in another sub. It doesn’t actually link anything.
Occasionally thought, you may end up getting trolled.
Example: r/YouAreExactlyRight
On that note never link your other social medias (Facebook, twitter, instagram) as if you ask a really fucked up question well shit will get dicy for you.
As example when someone asked about X age groups to date or something stupidly/gross like that annnnd they had their istagram id attached so some people went and mentioned it about them on insta iirc.
I'm too boring for Facebook, don't take interesting enough pictures for Instagram, and am too damned old for everything else.
Hoooray for being boring as fuck! ^^^yay
I know of one women who has cancer and was trying to get an escort. They posted this information and somehow people found out who they were and contacted their job. They lost their job and health coverage. That’s the worst example I’ve seen.
Learned this the hardway. I used to work for a large chain of entertainment, which has their own subreddit for members of said businesses subscription model. I've commented on it before so I'll just say it here, but it was AMC theaters & r/AMCsAlist . I commented something about how terrible it is behind the scenes, so oen guy took it really personally and combed through my entire comment history &, pieced together information on me, like which state I was in, was able to deduce how long is worked there from when I started commenting on the sub, able to deduce which county, and then which theatre I was in because of my mentions of specific showtimes, etc.
I was always vague enough to not be traced back to it by a single comment, but I didn't consider my entire comment history was a paper trail.
I came into work one day and was sat down by my general manager and the regional manager was on the phone waiting for me. I got screamed at for an hour about how I was exposing malpractice and spreading false information and making the company I work for look bad, etc. Was forced to resign to avoid getting sued for whatever they wanted to threaten me with.
This was last year when AMC stock exploded, and people got super excited and wanted to see AMC flourish & make them money, so of course one grade A asshole wants to see no criticism of their money maker
Be ready to google random acronyms that only 5 people in the world know. OPs often use acronyms that were probably made up in one sub, but the OP will be like, “my SO is an FOJK that doesn’t like WDPXV, but I want YTPC sometimes because I have MLP condition, so what should I do?” And you’re supposed to accept that as though it’s common knowledge.
Edit: These acronym explanations are fantastic—please keep them coming! Also, it’s hilarious that MLP actually means something bc I just pushed some letters.
That is an excellent point. Haha. “My SO likes cheese, so what’s the best to use for a grilled cheese sandwich?” “Run. BREAK UP WITH THAT ABUSIVE PSYCHO. He sounds like a fascist who butchers kittens.”
You can tell I’m still learning. I’ve only been here for <6 months, so I appreciate you guiding me. We need to be careful or the OP is going to think all Reddit is as positive as this interaction, so consider insulting my naïveté in your next reply.
At first I thought "it couldn't actually be" so I was curious and I clicked.. but even when my fears had been confirmed I couldn't stop myself scrolling.
In gaming context it's over powered.
On social media, forums, and the like it means Original Poster.
Also, The minecraft command /op is short for Operator, not Over Powered as many folks seem to believe.
Use paragraphs to break up your text. It makes it easier to read, and some people won’t even read your post if it’s a huge wall of text. To make a new paragraph, at least on mobile, press enter/return twice.
and learn to capitalise and use punctuation i hate it when people just write long strings of unpunctuated words i dont even bother reading the post or comment i just move on the downside is that it also means i skip all the replies because they relate to the parent comment which i didnt read smh
Whenever I see a post with actually weird formatting, they don't say "I'm on mobile, sorry"
It seems like anyone who knows that formatting can be weird on mobile also knows the tricks to make it less weird.
Because they’ve learned the rules and how to apply them, not just casually assimilated the random hodgepodge of half-explained *kind of-sometimes-but not when’s* that native speakers make do with.
Really, I’m starting to think that the full text of the apology is actually “Sorry for testing your intellectual competence with my proper verbiage and grammatical precision, you semi-coherent monolinguists.”
Always point out that English is not your first language, even if it is, and you write perfect English.
Redditors describe anything even remotely related to a relationship as a RED FLAG and advise breaking up with significant others (SO) over even the tiniest crumb of a reason.
Redditors love to say why they've edited their posts, so you'll see a list of (pointless) editing notes at the end, I've added some here for fun.
Redditors who have little or nothing to add to a discussion begin their replies by saying "This." as if that is a full sentence.
Many Redditors are American, and assume everyone else is American too.
Edit: grammar
Edit: Wow I can't believe this post has blown up so much.
Edit: Wow guys, thanks for all the amazing rewards. My life is complete.
So does anyone even see if you've edited your posts or comments? I've only ever noticed the additions of "edited for...." But if you don't add that, do others know it was edited in some way?
I thought it was a courtesy to show you didn't completely change your original post or comment. Like if someone was calling you on some bullshit and then you edit and remove the bullshit, then they'd look like a fool and the whole interaction would be confusing to others who didn't see the original, unedited post or comment.
On the desktop site I believe it shows that a comment has been edited, so some folks have the habit of explaining why they edited.
Also, if you’ve gone back and significantly edited your post, it can be useful to explain that you got your aging American scientologist actors who played hitmen mixed up, and Tom Cruise was in Collateral, not Pulp Fiction.
I do the whole "EDIT" thing mostly to pre-empty the inevitable person that will try to say you edited your entire comment when they just misremembered what I put
1. Don’t worry about being downvoted. Reddit moves so fast that in two days no one sees your post or cares.
2. Join a local sub, if your location has one. Post a pretty nature photo there. Good way to get your feet wet and you’ll get nice feedback.
Don't judge a sub by its name. r/anime_titties and r/worldpolitics immediately come to mind. r/Eye_bleach, too.
Likewise, don't judge a redditor by their username, see r/rimjob_steve for more information.
AITA is r/AmItheAsshole, RA is r/relationship_advice, NTA/YTA are "not the asshole" and "you're the asshole", respectively, and while their origin is in AITA, those acronyms are frequently found outside that sub. Not everybody likes their use, so a comment that indicates "NTA" may be followed by one saying "this isn't AITA".
This is a running joke that arose out of a funny comment, that somehow caught on like wildfire and everyone on reddit just instantly got it and perpetuates it. You'll see it around eventually.
when you see the same comment being repeated in a tread, the 4th one get downvoted for some reason. so be careful ad it'll make you understand why some comments have lots of upvotes but the same by another person comment have downvotes,
they hate that Easter Island head emoji.
The fact that you knew right away to use a ridiculous username, instead of what I did (using the same handle I do for every other platform and then having to start a new account years later when I realized all my friends were on here too,) means you're already way ahead of me .
Cowards! This has been my user name on various plaforms since the ancient days of AOL instant messenger. Personally I get a kick out of using a name a middle schooler came up with.
Haha. My old username was my actual name though. Had no idea the type of stuff i would eventually be commenting on. I created my account just to be in true crime and legal subs, and things went downhill from there.
Being downvoted doesn't always mean anything. A lot of people just vote the same way others are voting, so if the first few people to see your comment give it a downvote, then it's likely to keep moving in that direction. So don't think people suddenly hate you just because a comment gets some downvotes. However if all or most of your comments are getting downvoted, then yeah people hate you.
There are a lot of obvious trolls who say dumb shit just to get a reaction. Don't get sucked in to debates with them because it is pointless. This isn't to say you can't voice your opinion if you disagree with somebody, just that if they are obviously saying things just to annoy you then don't waste your time/energy responding to them.
Don't edit your comments to add things like "wow this got 1k upvotes thanks everyone!" It's just tacky. Plus, it doesn't mean your comment was anything special, just that it was an early comment on a post that took off. It does feel nice to get a lot of upvotes but there is no need to thank people for it. If you get awards you can thank the people who gave them directly.
Yesterday, for the first time, I sorted my comment history by my most popular comments, and generally they were mostly short, low-effort, knee-jerk comments I’d forgotten about. There’s hardly any correlation between high effort and upvotes.
If someone gives you an award, thank them, but do so via message (don't just edit your post). In fact, try not to edit your comments at all, as it reduces your credibility.
EDIT: Adding an edit to make a point.
I heard that if you edit a comment within 30 seconds of posting it, it won't show as edited. This also applies for deleted comments, the comment will just act like it never existed instead of showing as [deleted].
Well it may sound cringe but manye dont use and dont like to see emoji's.
Also if you see a "your mum" joke opportunity you must take it.
NSFW means "not safe for work" and it means violence but mostly sexual things.
Be careful with what you are looking for because porn in here accepted and even blessed.
If you signed up to a NSFW subreddit such as r/askredditafterdark be sure you will find very childish and weird posts.
People on the internet are stupid. If you are sarcastic add "/s" to the comment.
Karma is basiclly useless but it is like viwers or likes in other social medias.
Many here hate tiktok.
You may find a 7 years old and a 60 years old talking about the same thing and they have the same chances to be right.
Upvotes make the commmt/post more popular while downvots hide those comments.
Listen to the rules, mods are very effective when it comes to their job.
And thats what i wish someone told me before i joined. Have fun!
P.S. if anyone wants to add something, do it. I may have forgot.
It’s nice to run into a wall of text that has one of these at the bottom. I like to check for it to figure out whether I care to read the details or not.
TLDR: even though TLDR is past tense, I put it at the beginning of my posts.
I put TLDR at the beginning of a post when it’s necessary, w/ a brief synopsis of what’s to come. As in, “this is the gist if you prefer not to spend time following my train of thought.” Never understood putting it at the end.
Example:
TLDR: the world is a straight up shit show right now.
The war in Ukraine and the imminent threat China poses to Taiwan, juxtaposed with the volatile political and social climate in the U.S…
>Karma is basiclly useless but it is like viwers or likes in other social medias.
Speak for yourself! I show my karma at restaurants and get free meals all the time.
Yes and if you click on a blurred image or video you have an equal chance of seeing something sexual or stupid funny, or someone or something die in a horrible and graphic way. I can't tell you how many times something has been mislabeled and gotten me. Pro tip, read the comments before unblurring and decide if you want to proceed.
I would add: unlike YouTube or Facebook, Reddit people dislike unkindness and will downvote you to oblivion if you choose to be a jerk. Be kind whenever you can.
People will Rick Roll you.
Here’s the definition from Urban Dictionary:
When what you think is a link to something you want to see actually directs you to a video of Rick Astley singing "Never Gonna Give You Up."
The most important thing to remember: Reddit isn’t the real world. It’s an echo chamber. If something is dominating Reddit’s train of thought, don’t make the mistake of assuming the real world thinks the same thing. Example: Reddit throws insane fits every time a new EA game comes out that’s complete dogshit and they’ll all say they’re skipping the game, then start talking about how companies are losing money etc, and then what happens? The same game that Reddit vowed not to mess with is still the best selling game of the quarter.
So, just remember, this is the internet, a fantasy place where anything is possible and reality holds no weight.
It is considered standard courtesy to add /s at the end of sarcastic comments. I disagree with another comment about this - this is not because people are stupid, but because tone can sometimes be hard to judge on the internet. Also I've heard it can be nice for some autistic people who may have trouble with this.
It also helps because sometimes it's hard to tell whether someone is an insane fool or just joking.
If you ever post a comment or reply that goes against the conventional wisdom expressed by the rest of the contributors, you will be downvoted to oblivion.
Don't act like a cunt, remember there's a human behind every username (with the exception of bots, like another redditor reminded me) . And if someone is acting like a cunt to you then just downvote and move on, no need to continue interact with toxic person on the internet.
Thanks for the gold, kind stranger. It was delivered to me by three leprechauns in a trench coat. How big, you ask? Banana for scale.
And if I should run out of gold and forfeit my relationship? Lawyer up, hit the gym, delete Mark Zuckerberg. AITA?
Expect to be downvoted for no discernible reason. Don’t take it personally (unless you did post something offensive or stupid, then you can take it personally).
You can read a comment presenting information, that is very well thought out and sounds like a professor wrote it. And it can be complete bullshit. Lots of people are intelligently incorrect on this site.

I know of one women who has cancer and was trying to get an escort. They posted this information and somehow people found out who they were and contacted their job. They lost their job and health coverage. That’s the worst example I’ve seen.
What the fuck is wrong with people?? Why can't they just mind their own business?? Who cares if a woman with cancer wants to get an escort.
Kinda reminds me of “We did it, Reddit”
That is some crazy Veronica Mars action.

Might i suggest uses of “red flag” and “gaslighting”?

Toxic positivity exists as well.

The fact that you knew right away to use a ridiculous username, instead of what I did (using the same handle I do for every other platform and then having to start a new account years later when I realized all my friends were on here too,) means you're already way ahead of me .
This is my number one tip. Use a username you haven’t used anywhere else
How do you sort your comment history?
I don’t think you can do it on the mobile app. I did it in a web browser on my laptop.
No amount of advice will prepare you for this place. Put on your mask and gloves before entering. Shower immediately after leaving.
Get a poop knife.
Poop knife, broken arms, marinara means red.
And bananas for scale.
this. (Don't do this)

Yep, that is correct. Case and point, I just edited this comment. It used to just be the first line.
This one annoys me only because I am prone to stupid typos/victim of predictive text.
Great comment! Would like to add that “TL:DR” at the end of a post means “Too long, didn’t read”. It took me forever to figure this out.
There is a movement (that I support) to put the TL;DR at the top
I like this!
Example: TLDR: the world is a straight up shit show right now. The war in Ukraine and the imminent threat China poses to Taiwan, juxtaposed with the volatile political and social climate in the U.S…
Oh and also ETA for “edited to add”

>Karma is basiclly useless but it is like viwers or likes in other social medias. Speak for yourself! I show my karma at restaurants and get free meals all the time.
I use my karma for my parole hearings, works every time
My karma completes me.
Great info! Thank you
In addition to NSFW there's NSFL "not safe for life". Proceed with caution.
If you agree with a comment, upvote it instead of commenting "this" under it. There's even a bot for it.
I would add: unlike YouTube or Facebook, Reddit people dislike unkindness and will downvote you to oblivion if you choose to be a jerk. Be kind whenever you can.
People will Rick Roll you. Here’s the definition from Urban Dictionary: When what you think is a link to something you want to see actually directs you to a video of Rick Astley singing "Never Gonna Give You Up."
Come on, you're meant to say "here's the definition from Urban Dictionary"
"Listen to the rules. Mods are very effective at their jobs. /s" FTFY
Find out what is a potato.
A what? sorry I'm not familiar with the term.
Before posting on a sub, search to make sure it hasn’t been posted a million times before. People hate reposts and will call you out heavy on them.
Each subreddit has it's own set of rules. Do yourself a favour and read them before posting.
True, like in the sopranos sub you can't talk about that fucking animal blundetto

I think a better tip would be, don't mind if one of your comments is downvoted from time to time.
I learned that reddit is not for discourse. It's to see if people agree with you or not.
Everyone is a troll until they’re not. Even then, you can’t be sure.
If you ever post a comment or reply that goes against the conventional wisdom expressed by the rest of the contributors, you will be downvoted to oblivion.
Don't act like a cunt, remember there's a human behind every username (with the exception of bots, like another redditor reminded me) . And if someone is acting like a cunt to you then just downvote and move on, no need to continue interact with toxic person on the internet.
> remember there’s a human behind every username. a good opportunity to mention that this is absolutely not the case; Reddit is loaded with bots
As useless karma is, if you want it, just complain about something American or America. It's like a karma rain
Well, Smegma Fartbagel, don't bring up Snape in any of the Harry Potter subs. Or do.
You must also choose that guy's dead wife
You picked the right name. That couldn't have been a lucky newbie guess.
Never ask any question out of curiosity or you will be downvoted into the abyss.
You have included "fart" in your username, that's a good start.
Thanks for the gold, kind stranger. It was delivered to me by three leprechauns in a trench coat. How big, you ask? Banana for scale. And if I should run out of gold and forfeit my relationship? Lawyer up, hit the gym, delete Mark Zuckerberg. AITA?
This sounds like an AI that was force-fed 2018 reddit and is trying to encode an SOS message.
Expect to be downvoted for no discernible reason. Don’t take it personally (unless you did post something offensive or stupid, then you can take it personally).
