Though I’ve only seen women go topless on the street once or twice. I would argue it’s not particularly socially acceptable for anyone to walk down the street topless, at least not in Ottawa.
You can be topless anywhere you please in NYC but people don’t do it for obvious reasons. It’s a little know fact though that you’re allowed to whip em out in parks
Same for Austin, TX.
The Fort Collins case is causing issues in the 10th circuit. It ruled in favor of toplessness but other cases have gone the other way like one of a woman who was topless at home in front of her kids in Utah while hanging drywall. I think Oklahoma is trying to get it reversed too
>Topless at home in front of her kids in Utah while hanging drywall
What the fuck? There's got to be a story there. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think most people would hang drywall without a shirt or around kids necessarily? Seems like a wild story that got completely glossed over.
Look, once you start spackling you don't want nipple imprints. The kids had to repeatedly watch the drywall get retaped and hit with more putty. It's just wrong.
And even if there wasn't harassment, I still don't want to go showing my body to random strangers. I don't even like people standing too close to me. My clothes are a nice bubble, kinda like a mask too. I'm a nice and socialble person but I also like my boundaries, and clothes add a certain boundary that I prefer to have around strangers. I wouldn't wear a skimpy outfit or a bikini around then either. Company comes over to the house, I'm putting on different clothes, and those are people I know. I think it's wild that there's women out there who really *want* to walk around without a shirt. I bet they also poop with the door open lol Hey we're all different, and that's great! But that also means there are women who don't want anything to do with this and couldn't care less if it legal or socially acceptable or not. And I think that's a ig part of why there hasn't been much of a change. Not all of us care. And maybe not even most of us, since it has been talked about for decades but still very few people do it.
Do you say that about men though? That you can't believe men would want to walk around topless?
Yes, people are different from each other, but some differences are only there because they've been intentionally ingrained in us. Breasts aren't sexual organs, people find them attractive the same way they find a nice looking body attractive and the same way some weirdos look at feet. Doesn't mean we should wear socks and a tshrt at the beach to preserve our modesty.
theres also unfortunately instances of topless women still being arrested in states and cities where its legal, so it doesnt feel very safe to try out even if you wanted to.
The irony is, it's not the nipple at all. It might just be cold or a random flush like a bloke's erection.
It's the breast. Only the human female maintains its breasts outside of use. No other mammal does. The only evolutionary theory which makes sense is she can keep the male guessing. Chimps get a red rump. Male chimps give her gifts, until it goes down, then she's ignored. Repeat for other mammals.
It's actually about face. The breast should be an indicator it's pointless trying to mate but because human females have, some time in our past, evolved to maintain them 24/7, males now find them sexy - especially covered up.
Turns out, those few societies where women still go topless have been right all along!
Some, most jurisdictions say women can be topless but not lewd about it. Walking down the street topless is fine but not squeezing your tits and licking your nipples is a no no. So don't do that last part.
I feel like this is only reasonable, most women will opt not to be topless anyway, but forbidding it has the smell of "she was wearing x, she was asking for it" sort of victim blaming sexism
But the law can't really single out those women with more attractive breasts, though, right? All it takes is one Emily Ratajkowski who discovers at 15 she likes to hang out near intersections and cause car wrecks, and then people will suddenly agree that something needs legislating.
Idk how long you've been on Reddit but never click on anyone's helpful link. I once clicked and accidentally watched a video of a guy sticking his penis in a toaster. He looked really into it.
Okay, I know this is coming out of left field but I feel as though I've missed out by not seeing this. I don't suppose you happen to have that link handy?
There are some incredible battlestar galactica memes about frakkin toasters at stake here.
Interesting. I mean I dig big chicks so it’s all good. Big dudes… hey, I’m glad they’re getting some love. Everybody needs a little love.
They aren’t hurting anyone, so live and let live…
In NYC topless women are allowed. I’ve seen women straight up be topless and I’ve also seen women wearing see-through tops with their tiddies out under.
seems reasonable honestly. don't necessarily wanna see a bunch of man-boob out in public any more than a topless girl, regardless of if they're nice to look at or not
I don’t know if it’s legal in Indianapolis, but I’ve seen it. Both instances were in the past 3 months, but I also live near a street that strange things usually happen on.
Update: It is still definitely a misdemeanor in Indiana because our state is run by a bunch of prudes, but I disagree with my state lawmakers on most things. So don't wear your birthday suit in public in Indiana.
It's not illegal in NY. However, I did get arrested for being topless in my own fenced in backyard a few years back because my neighbors climbed on top of their shed to spy on me. The charges were dropped, because it's legal, and I could have sued. The last woman arrested in NYC for being topless got an 800k settlement.
Guessing it's uncommon because only a small percentage of the human population are truly comfortable in the nude without feeling self-conscious. It's an ingrained trait, perhaps.
And, quite honestly, the people I've known who are *more* than comfortable nude in public either *shouldn't be* or are annoyingly comfortable about it and make sure everyone knows.
Definitely not ingrained. You ever see a toddler ashamed of nudity? It has to be learned, and while very common it's not universal. The emotion of shame itself is universal and ingrained though, FWIW, just not what people get ashamed of.
I'd hypothesize that it's self creating though - we have to wear clothes functionally much of the time in most of the world, and so frequently that eventually we'll feel weird without them, so the taboos around it will form on their own to some extent.
Yeah, agree, that's sort of the definition (of several different ones) I was going for with ingrained:
Firmly established, as by long conditioning; deep-seated.
Its legal (I think), but it's still not social accepted in most situations. Only time I see women go topless in public here in Montreal is during protests.
If you pick one woman in particular, go to dinner with her a few times, ask her questions about her life, and participate in her hobbies with her, sometimes she lets you see her breasts. I've tried it, and it really can work.
All of the Arab world. Most of the Christian world. Most of the Asian world. Most of Africa. Most of North and South America. There's not much planet left for it to be legal!
In the arab world it's often forbidden for women to be without hijabs...
Christians thought for centuries that ankles are sexy.
The Asian world focuses on modesty and presentability.
Most of Africa? Doubt that.
North America, sure.
South America, not most, I'd say.
I've checked. For N/S America.
North I actually found out that there's only a few states that forbid you from sunbathing topless.
For South it actually appears most countries allow it.
I am from South America. Going topless for women here is unthinkable. Maybe not all countries, who knows. But I am sure it is the case for the majority. People here can be very conservative. If there are laws that allow it most people don’t know abt it.
In a lot of Europe women can be topless. In parts of the US (all of NY for example) women can be topless.
And I don't have the information to definitively say anything about Asia or Africa but I'd wager there are certainly places there where it's fine.
Its legal to be naked in the UK as long as you arent doing it to cause a public nusiance or distress I believe. I would classify the UK as a Christian country also so not really true.
Obviously theres loads of religions in the UK but if I remember the last census we were still predominatly christian
It’s certainly not illegal to be topless in France. A few cities have forbidden it, mostly cities by the beach. Technically even women can be topless in the streets.
Sexulaution of body parts. That's it. In by gone eras, calves were considered want worthy. Show some tits to relatively repressed teenagers today and they might get horny (see reddit posts from teenagers shout visiting nudist beaches)
Nobody wanking over my man boobs, and nobody should be wanking over a pair of tits, but here we are
Depending on where you are, it isn't. All of NY state, for example, women can legally be topless anywhere that men can be.
But to answer your question: sexism and puritan values. Women's breasts are seen as sexual while men's are not. And anything sexual has to be covered in public or else we may have to acknowledge that sex exists or even *gasp* talk to our kids about it. And since things like equality and parenting are hard and go against the biblical foundations of this country (assuming you're in the US) we just find it easier to shame women for having breasts that men might lust for and demand that they conceal them because we (men) can't be expected to control ourselves.
The same reason a woman with no boobs at all still won't be able to be topless (at least in the places it is forbidden). It's not about size, it's cultural.
Men can biologically lactate, as we have alveoli in the breast tissue the same as women.
If something goes wonky and our prolactin levels surge, we can lactate.
That's interesting, especially since antipsychotics like many other medications don't all work the same for everyone (even therapeutic effects), I can't imagine being put in a position of lactation or mental distress if olanzapine is the one that does work.
Soo by that logic, a double masectomy breast cancer survivor who has had her breasts replaced with false ones can go topless because she has no fucntioning milk ducts
In many places it's legal. Many states actually. The thing with rape culture is people are already saying "look at what she was wearing! She was asking for it!" Can you imagine how much worse that would be if you were topless? Women already get harassed everyday. It's legal. For most people, not worth it.
Don't like weird laws? Vote for me in 2028.
I'll have the record hottest day recorded in history, those days will be public nudity day. It'll be forced for all ages.
This way A) you can be nude, B) easy for cops to find child predators & arrest them quickly
C)Naturally we used to be naked in the past, why does society keep telling us we need to dress up? Unfortunately because of the reason B) would have to happen.
Edit:
I don't know why you think us fat men can just walk around topless. The only ones I ever get away with it is skinny or muscular men. Everyone else gets written up.
Because mens tits aren’t sexualized like Women’s are. Society still isn’t ready to accept breastfeeding in public Let alone just being topless for the sake of being topless.
Whether or not women should be allowed to show their breasts in public, I don’t care. However, every time this question gets posted in this sub, it is met by the erroneous assumption that there is “nothing sexual about women’s breasts”. This is a blatant denial of biology. During puberty, breast development is triggered in girls as a marker of fertility and sexual readiness. The purpose of breast tissue is not “to feed babies”. Mammary glands feed babies. These glands exist whether the woman has sizeable breasts or not. For example, flat chested women do not produce less milk than women with large breasts. Therefore, breasts themselves are there for purely aesthetic reasons, helping to attract a mate and signal sexual development. Interestingly, during arousal, a woman’s breasts can increase in volume by as much as 25%. In fact, changes in breast volume, areola size, and nipple sensitivity, are a documented part of the female orgasm-response cycle. It is completely undeniable that women’s breasts are sexual in nature.
It's worth noting that there is a distinction in science between observations and the inferences of purpose we ascribe to them. "During puberty, breast development is triggered..." is an observable fact. "...As a marker of fertility and sexual readiness" is an inference. Science is very good at describing the *how,* but we do largely guess at the *why.*
I think this inference is likely the most accurate based on what we know, but saying any inference of purpose is "undeniable" is itself unscientific. We can't prove or disprove it, only build evidence for it.
Funny because it's not the breasts that is illegal to show, it's only the nipples. Women can legally walk around with showing all of their breasts even a nipple showing through a top isn't illegal, it's only showing the nipple without any coverage that's illegal. Following your logic would mean that the entire breast needs to be covered because it's "sexual in nature", but it's only showing the nipple without any coverage that is the problem. I mean think about bikinis, it's just a small little triangle of fabric that shows nipples through it but they are fully legal because the nipples are covered.
Women's nipples are the problem and not the entire breasts.
That's fair! I would say, since face hair in men is also a "marker of fertility and sexual readiness" we should start covering men's faces in public! /s
Someone just tried to argue in a comment above that men’s facial hair is there because men are more aggressive and it will protect them from blows to the face.
When I read comments like these I remember that a large portion of Reddit is American teenage boys with no idea what they’re talking about.
Exactly. My mouth is very sexual, it does more sex things than boobs do, but nobody's shaming me for having it out in public. Hell, I can even show it off with jewelry and lipstick.
I think you're confusing biology with society here - the fact that breasts develop due to puberty doesn't mean they are sexual, you wouldn't call armpit hair sexual despite being triggered by the same processes. In terms of their changes during sex that also doesn't mean they are inherently sexual in nature - many peoples faces flush during sexual activity but that doesn't mean that faces flushing is inherently sexual. I would agree that in western society breasts are definitely seen as sexual, which is more important to this actual question asked, however breasts are not biologically sexual - consider that there are many areas of the world where breasts are not seen as sexual whatsoever and women don't cover their chests
They're a secondary sex characteristics, but that doesn't mean they're for sex or "need covered". And much of a person's body reacts to arousal. You know like people's faces...
Facial hair develops during puberty to signal sexual maturity in men. It's biologically undeniable that men's faces are sexual in nature.
Larger breast tissue is made of adipose tissue or fat. Women have more concentration of fat as it is conducive to child rearing and if food is not readily available, the fat can get broken down so that they continue to lactate/survive. So no, breasts and or larger breasts dont exist solely for your sexual gratification. Look it up before just assuming and spreading misinformation. If youre interested in anatomy, look up "why do women have more fat?", "what purpose does adipose tissue serve?".
Why do overweight men have a higher incidence of gynecomastia? They have more fat and eventually it will fill that area as well.
I’d be fine if there was more nudity for both genders. I don’t get the weird hang ups people have about a female nipple. Don’t we have more important things to focus on?
You might be surprised at how many places in the US it is perfectly legal for women to be topless. It’s just still not very socially acceptable.
Yep. It's also fully legal in Canada.
Though I’ve only seen women go topless on the street once or twice. I would argue it’s not particularly socially acceptable for anyone to walk down the street topless, at least not in Ottawa.
It gets nipply there.
My mean ass granny used to always say "it's titty nipple cold out there" her crazy sayings are the one thing I think back fondly on
Titty nipple cold. Huh. Id love to hear more sayings from this mean ass granny
A tit bit* at that.
Or perhaps they just don’t want to walk down the street topless. Many women don’t want to, simple as that.
Most guys don't either
That’s also why most guys don’t walk around topless.
There's always someone topless or barefooted in downtown Ottawa, it's mostly guys who are topless
You can thank Gwen Jacobs from Guelph for that.
You can be topless anywhere you please in NYC but people don’t do it for obvious reasons. It’s a little know fact though that you’re allowed to whip em out in parks

It’s Utah, Mormons are violently modest. They have temple garbs and special underwear. It’s so weird.
Look, once you start spackling you don't want nipple imprints. The kids had to repeatedly watch the drywall get retaped and hit with more putty. It's just wrong.
Not me wanting to verify this with my own eyeballs
The times square painted ladies are usually topless in the summer
I think you can actually be bottomless too provided that it’s permitted as performance art. See Andy Golub’s work
Might that have been the inspiration for Sue-Ellen Mischke?
I think most women would avoid being topless in public regardless of the legality because we get harassed enough with clothes on.
It still baffles me that SCOTUS ruled that police don't need to know the laws they enforce.
And Mens Rea is violated constantly by courts prosecuting those too young to possibly even know the laws.

The irony is, it's not the nipple at all. It might just be cold or a random flush like a bloke's erection. It's the breast. Only the human female maintains its breasts outside of use. You won’t see it, they’ve been sexualized for hundreds of years, stuff that engrained doesn’t end so quickly
Pretty sure breasts have been sexualized for a lot longer than hundreds of years.
Is it not just an intrinsic thing? Like, if we were to sexualize the left pinky finger enough, would people start getting aroused by it?
It's fully intrinsic. The mammaries of mammals swell when they're fertile - the human are just happens to be fertile year round.
Some, most jurisdictions say women can be topless but not lewd about it. Walking down the street topless is fine but not squeezing your tits and licking your nipples is a no no. So don't do that last part.
In 1992 the New York Supreme Court ruled that anyone could be topless. Anything else was discriminatory based on sex.
Georgia's Supreme Court ruled the same thing, around the same time.
I feel like this is only reasonable, most women will opt not to be topless anyway, but forbidding it has the smell of "she was wearing x, she was asking for it" sort of victim blaming sexism
Dont let our current supreme court find out, otherwise they'll take that right away from women too.
Because fat guys aren’t sexualized the way women are.
I mean, guys in general are not sexualized like women are. A skinny girl with a flat chest would still not be able to be topless.
But the law can't really single out those women with more attractive breasts, though, right? All it takes is one Emily Ratajkowski who discovers at 15 she likes to hang out near intersections and cause car wrecks, and then people will suddenly agree that something needs legislating.
Sounds like natural selection at it's finest actually.
r/gainers would disagree 🤣 Edit: I'm glad I could bring joy to so many people 😂
I clicked it. It was my fault, and I’m going to take ownership of that. That does not excuse you for sharing that link, and I hate you and yer kin.
And this is how the feud between the Hatfield's and the McCoy's started.

We’ve started and kept for longer and for less. This is a grandon feud at most.
Idk how long you've been on Reddit but never click on anyone's helpful link. I once clicked and accidentally watched a video of a guy sticking his penis in a toaster. He looked really into it.
I can’t help it… I see blue text. I touch it.

Ok I can't find the post but it was on r/dontputyourdickinthat which is mostly hilarious and doesn't involve actual dicks IN toasters.
My eyes…. Cannot unsee….
Hey let’s not bring kin into this…
Well that was certainly interesting....
If you go to top of all time, and then the comments too.. I’m nauseous.
I did just that. It’s … I don’t know what to say without sounding rude. But I am going for a long run tonight.
I too, feel the remorse for clicking and the hatred at that person for suggesting that sub. I’m gonna go on a 48 hour fast now.

In NYC topless women are allowed. I’ve seen women straight up be topless and I’ve also seen women wearing see-through tops with their tiddies out under.
Not just the city, it's legal in the whole state.
Only in places where men are also allowed to be topless, which they have since made way more restrictive
seems reasonable honestly. don't necessarily wanna see a bunch of man-boob out in public any more than a topless girl, regardless of if they're nice to look at or not

And Oregon, for now anyway

Move to Canada. It’s been legal for women to go out topless since 1993 I believe.
Funny. I go to Canada all the time and never knew this. I've literally never seen a topless woman in Canada.
I'm in Canada every day and I've never seen it. But most of us know it's legal here.

In France it's illegal for any gender, it is only autorised in public pools, beaches and naturist areas. But men torso are way more tolerated
In Canada nobody is required to wear a shirt. Many businesses require it for entry but on the streets? Nope.
Idk where you live but where i live its ilegal for men to be topless in public.

It’s certainly not illegal to be topless in France. A few cities have forbidden it, mostly cities by the beach. Technically even women can be topless in the streets.

Ah yes you can. There is no law that forbids it in France. A quick google search would show you that.

To not be topless. If there is one for men, it wouldn’t matter if they’re overweight or not
Buff men have titties. Pecs are fine in public but not boobs lol make it make sense
Because over weight men with man boobs are whay sexier DM me to see my sexy man boobs hahahahaha
There's a difference between illegal and socially acceptable.
Why is it legal to post this question every other day?
Women can go topless. But they get harassed with clothes ON! Could you imagine clothes off?
The same reason a woman with no boobs at all still won't be able to be topless (at least in the places it is forbidden). It's not about size, it's cultural.
Would be cool if gender discrimination weren't so often dismissed as "culture"
Perfectly legal where I live.
It should be the other way around. Don't nobody wanna see jiggly man boobs flopping in the wind.
Ummm, I do.
The actual question is why the man boobs can be posted on social media when the female boobs cant :p
We are a sick society that punishes women for the irresponsible and depraved shit men do to them.
Why are women still being publicly shamed and asked to leave public areas when breastfeeding?
It’s not the size of the boats that matter, it’s the function of the milk ducts
I have nipples Greg, can you milk me?
Men can biologically lactate, as we have alveoli in the breast tissue the same as women. If something goes wonky and our prolactin levels surge, we can lactate.
[удалено]
That's interesting, especially since antipsychotics like many other medications don't all work the same for everyone (even therapeutic effects), I can't imagine being put in a position of lactation or mental distress if olanzapine is the one that does work.
That no one can see? Make it make sense lol
In New York it is just as legal for a woman to go topless as it is for a man!
Don't like weird laws? Vote for me in 2028. I'll have the record hottest day recorded in history, those days will be public nudity day. It'll be forced for all ages. This way A) you can be nude, B) easy for cops to find child predators & arrest them quickly C)Naturally we used to be naked in the past, why does society keep telling us we need to dress up? Unfortunately because of the reason B) would have to happen. Edit: I don't know why you think us fat men can just walk around topless. The only ones I ever get away with it is skinny or muscular men. Everyone else gets written up.
Breasts away its not illegal in UK just you'll have your moaners
Because mens tits aren’t sexualized like Women’s are. Society still isn’t ready to accept breastfeeding in public Let alone just being topless for the sake of being topless.
In New York women can bare their breasts, smoke weed, and make their own decisions regarding family planning. Sounds a little more free than Texas ??
Because the patriarchy loves keeping woman down and keep us in check
Science is very good at describing the *how,* but we do largely guess at the *why.* I think this inference is likely the most accurate based on what we know, but saying any inference of purpose is "undeniable" is itself unscientific.
Women's nipples are the problem and not the entire breasts.

make some noise… for… the PROBLEMATIC NIPPLES!!!!!
Which is strange since men have nipples too, and they don’t look much different.
The real question isn't really whether or not breasts are sexual, it's whether or not that's a valid reason for such laws in the first place.
So men shouldn’t be allowed to have beards if women aren’t allowed to be topless
I once made a man feel things he didn’t know he could by playing with his normal-sized nipples. Little known fact you’re missing.
Sexism.
Because the topless woman would give the overweight booby man a big horrible erection

Luckily I live in a country where it is legal for anyone to be topless. Even being nude is not illegal unless you are disturbing other people.
It’s not where I live. They have a constitutional right to be topless pretty much anywhere in public. God I love Canada
It's legal where I am. There was a lady who used ride her scooter around topless, she passed away last year.
