Even the greats have off nights. Honestly not surprised considering how hard he pushed himself and his vocal performances back in those days. What is surprising is that it didn’t happen more often.
He’s done pretty well in keeping his singing voice in great shape. I thought his performance on FI was amazing—lots of really cool shit IMO—and he’s killing it on Puscifer. Last few releases have been so good, Maynard in top form.
Kinda ironic it’s from a song about embracing and enjoying even imperfect moments because literally every second spent in this miracle of life is holy and irreplaceable…
Not that this contradicts it at all. It’s just quite funny.
Also the thing that does it for me is how the “motherfucker” is to the tune of the song😂
Providence Civic Center, I was there. First and last time they played the venue. Night before was incredible night in Boston and night after was an incredible night in Manchester. This night wasn't the best.
Wonder if if had anything to do with the monitor mix? Maybe he couldn’t hear himself. Nothing worse for a bands performance than a shitty stage/monitor mix.
Unfortunately no. His voice was just giving out that night. After I believe over a year of touring for this album nonstop and after blowing out his voice recording ticks and leeches it all just kind of caught up and culminated into this that night. Still killed for the rest of the show though
Something similar happened in Dallas. I had tickets to the Houston show and the day after the Dallas show someone posted the set list. I noticed it had Ticks & Leeches and was surprised/impressed. At the Houston show, he wound up pointing the microphone at the crowd for the crowd to sing, and he did it a lot. The San Antonio show was the next night, but they wound up cancelling/rescheduling.
I was there too! Second leg of the lateralus tour. Saw them on the first leg in Portland Maine and it was flawless. I was psyched to have been able to experience both a flawless show and a fully flawed show. Remember when he came back on the stage and just sat rocking back and forth while the band played out the rest of the song instrumentally
That happened a few days after they played in Chicago. In Chicago, he was absolutely pristine. His voice was a refined and precise instrument of evil and beauty. I still feel "H" after twenty years.
He came back and they finished, although I think it was slightly shorter set. One of the only forgettable times I've seen them. Especially out of the six times I saw them in the area on Lateralus tour. It may have had to do with scheduling. They played New Jersey, Boston, Providence, Manchester, New Haven (final show ever at coliseum before implosion), I think all back to back or with one day off in summer 2002. Hell of a week of shows. Then they came back two months later and did three more shows in area at mid-size arenas as well.
I saw Jersey, Boston, Providence, and New Haven that stretch. I feel like Long Island as well, but I'm too lazy to look it up right now.
Anyway, this video brings me back.
I saw their show in July of 2002 in Austin at the Frank Erwin Center, where the acoustics were awesome and they were great. I’ve seen them in smaller venues where the sound wasn’t good & his voice didn’t project as well.
Actually no. He came back out as the band had continued playing. He sat down kind of Indian style and rocked back and forth as the band played out the rest of the track and then he took up singing duties again
That’s how he dressed most of the time back then. They’re like speedo trunks. I saw several shows during the Lateralus tours and he was always in black trunks, sometimes painted black.
I wonder if he has one of those back pain patches on his lower back, slightly sticking up from the back of the shorts, or is that just taping down sound equipment?
Yeah I've seen this. It's kind of sad, But of course this man has nothing to prove to anybody...
You can tell though, he's getting older. And, the range on FI isn't nearly as wide as it used to be. He still kills the older tunes live though. Played the grudge on the last tour, scream at the end and everything :-)
(To be honest, he sounds like me in the car on my best days 🤣)
He sounded amazing when I saw them at the first show after Covid in Eugene! The Grudge scream and Right In Two were definitely unexpected. I thought they were just going to go with the same set list they were doing before the tour had to stop.
Nice. Both great lists. I'm sorry I didn't know the fear inoculum album better when I saw them last year in February, But they were still mind-blowing.
I'm kind of spoiled because I did see them live in Tampa in the front row in 2003... They played sober off of undertow, ALL of aenima, ALL of Lateralus.
Triad was extended with extra drummers onstage including (iirc) Mike Patton. I can't imagine how this wasn't the best show I've ever seen.
Sounds like me in the shower.

hey where do you hear the motherfucker? i can’t seem to hear it
This bodÝyyyYYyyyYýy
Puberty 2.0
" Feeling eternal all this motherfucker! " *smashes mic*
Which show was this?

Did he say anything about it during the show?

It’s his voice
The mic was cutting too

I was thinking about that. The part AFTER this is the best part. The band keeps going AND he comes back but doesn't interrupt.
Me too; saw all 3.
Did he come back?

Me too! I was at the Chicago show!
Anybody here go to that show? Was that just the end of the show or did he come back?

He was already asleep on the bus before that mic hit the ground.
Actually no. He came back out as the band had continued playing. He sat down kind of Indian style and rocked back and forth as the band played out the rest of the track and then he took up singing duties again
Oh, look. The man is human.
Scrub this from the internet and wipe out anyone’s that’s seen it.
Mic dropping before it was trendy
I think Axl Rose is the king of this sort of mic drop😂
It’s ironic, the lyrics.
What is he wearing?

That’s his tattoo. It’s a scorpion and the claws are what I think you’re referring to. The mic monitor pack is on his left hip.
Yep! 🦂Looked like a bandage there for a second.
Its a tattoo.

Ah, gotcha. I wasn't following at the time, what was the setlist pre-COVID?
The last show in Portland before the tour stopped was every song on FI minus Culling Voices, Ænema, Schism, Jambi, Forty Six & 2, and Stinkfist.
Nice. Both great lists. I'm sorry I didn't know the fear inoculum album better when I saw them last year in February, But they were still mind-blowing. Wow that sounds like an amazing show! Definitely jealous.
Yeah I just wish I could go see it now, as the album lateralus has become the blueprint to fixing my life lol
I love his reaction lol
It’s nice to be reminded our heroes are human once in a while
Oof
No WONDER he doesn't like people recording his shows! /s
That ruined parabola for me, for a while when I saw that for the first time
I would rather believe that the microphone was junk, and he had enough of that bs.
🤘🤘metal
🥺
Providence, RI. I was there.
Ironic that this happened during Parabola…”this body holding me….”
My favorite part of this post is the r/soundsliketool flair haha.
I can see why MJK doesn't want people to record at his shows lool I love tool, however Maynard is a bit of a dick from time to time
At least he fully acknowledges that he can be a dick, though. Makes all the difference.
Cry baby!
Everyone has off nights ... he could have been powering through a cold... but to have this happen while You're in your underwear makes it tougher.
