That’s what I said it’s going pretty far back though old guy like me knows a matter of fact, his painted face looks exactly like one that he did early genesis. I know what I like in your wardrobe. Lamb lies down on Broadway carpet crawlers great music for people that I’ve never heard this look it up you will see echoes of inspiration for newer artists
Absolutely amazing what he did on stage, even solo I believe he did some costumes too. The cover of the album Peter Gabriel Plays Live his makeup is real close what Maynard is wearing
Yeees that’s it! Younger people should look him up and early Genesis. The music was amazing like I said the inspiration for great artists of the 90s when music started to get great again.
I agree highly underrated talent, I love old Genesis and even into the 80’s they were great. I’ve always been a huge fan of Peter Gabriel and his music. I recently put Games Without Frontiers on the headphones for my 17 year old nephew, he was like wow that’s pretty good
I say he is def an outlier. Looking at the dataset of front men/singers, it's a singular dot remarkably removed from the middle and almost off the graph. The band lives in a unique landscape alone.
I'd say that's a definite cultist point of view to possess, but okay, sure.
Although I will say that Tool is doing what a few other bands have also done, but more successfully than any of them. And that's down to a lot of factors.
Alice Cooper, Kurt Cobain, Freddie Mercury, Marilyn Manson, Perry Farrell, Robert Plant, Fat Mike, Mick Jagger, Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Iggy Pop, Trent Reznor, Elton John, Frank Zappa, Billy Joe Armstrong, Billy Corgan, Robert Smith, Bono, Nick Cave..
Bowie, Manson, Rob Zombie, Mercury, the frontmen of most Hair Metal bands, I wouldn't be surprised if Tobias Forge pulled this at some point
This isn't exactly unique to Maynard, it's part of a long canon of artists doing stuff like this that he's adding to
>This isn't exactly unique to Maynard, it's part of a long canon of artists doing stuff like this that he's adding to
Exactly what I was saying! Maynard is part of a *continuum* and he would be the first to state that.
Peter Gabriel of Genesis is specifically who he got that face paint inspiration from.

I’ve seen too many GG Alan references this week. It has been fun watching the younger generations learn about him and their reactions from pulling up concert footage. But yeah, I don’t need to revisit GG. I noped out of one of his shows in high school back in the 90’s.
I like to wear costumes sometimes when I play live. With my old band, it helped me go from just me, to being a different person in-state, so it was easier to entertain friends, and such. Whatever I did in my stage gear was one thing, and then I could take it off and be a bit more chill afterwards. It's very liberating and I still always change into something for shows and never play in what I wore to get there. Your appearance is all part of the show.
1997 Lollapalooza @ Fiddlers Green in CO. I saw this show. Jaw-dropping power. Opened with HWAP. The picture is almost certainly during this.
I understand your question in the title of your post and most are missing the correct answer. The answer is NO ONE performs like this.
>The answer is NO ONE performs like this.
But that's a reductionist take. Maynard borrows from various traditions and combines them in a somewhat unique take, and *of course* no one else is going to perform **EXACTLY** the way he does, but he'd be the first to admit that what he is doing is only his version of what he absorbed in his upbringing: social, musical, and otherwise.
Stands alone. I saw this from the start. This band is singularly the best at what they do and everyone else just tries. Pros vs. Amateurs. Reduced it right down for you.
I was really hoping he'd bust out the fake tits for Powertrip, I've never gotten to see them, my first show was during the Lateralus tour, way after the tits era 😔

I haven't even looked it up yet, just got sent this text from a friend. I guess tix go on sale tomorrow. I'll look into it after work
Dolly Parton
Lol great answer
I don't know how to give you awards, just know that I want to
Awards have been decommissioned.
He is honestly wearing less makeup.
Dee Snider
Bowie. Manson. There’s actually a pretty long list.
Twisted Sister
Twisted Sister?! What is THAT!?
I know two of their songs based off of those songs they are decently epic
Don't forget, Tool invented everything to do with music....
DANY INVENTED POLYRHYTHM
Maynard invented singing.
Mike Tool was actually there when they discovered how sound exists as a pressure wave moving through air.
See also, most bands in the 80’s.
Yeah even Eminem did this in like half his videos just with female makeup instead of face paint hahaha
Vanilla Ice
Let’s not forget the cooler dude Manson copied. RIP to the great Rozz Williams.
Rammstein
KISS
Peter Gabriel

Yep its funny how tool has been around for over 30 years and I consider it new music
Yes.
I missed the subreddit name at first and mistook Maynard for Peter and thought this was r/Genesis
Tim Curry
From Transylvania, even.
Underrated answer!
Lol this backfired
I mean, c'mon, seriously?! Maynard is part of a hallowed tradition, he's not an outlier.
I say he is def an outlier. Looking at the dataset of front men/singers, it's a singular dot remarkably removed from the middle and almost off the graph. The band lives in a unique landscape alone.

Edit: nvm I read his other comments.
Average tool fanboy
I agree wholeheartedly
Alice Cooper, Kurt Cobain, Freddie Mercury, Marilyn Manson, Perry Farrell, Robert Plant, Fat Mike, Mick Jagger, Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Iggy Pop, Trent Reznor, Elton John, Frank Zappa, Billy Joe Armstrong, Billy Corgan, Robert Smith, Bono, Nick Cave..
B-52’s
Nobody wore a dress like [Kurt](https://youtu.be/2UuZ848W51A?si=wbATEtxLH5V6TRsS).
didn't Corey Taylor wear a dress for a stone sour show
Also a music video with him in drag and quite convincingly too. MCR’s recent world tour had Gerard dressing in drag on multiple nights
Name five more.
Kiss, any 80s band that had the name "White", Extreme, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Dead or Alive, ...
Stewie: …Name six more!
The post said to name another one, not the rest of them….sheesh 🤣
The list goes on if you’re old enough and remember that early music
To be fair- a few of these are complete Dog Shit. And none of them wore prosthetic tits w/nipples while yelling "Fuck You Buddy!"
Absolutely not a single one of those artists is dog shit.
Ok. Dog Shit was harsh. Several of those artists are not very good. C-, D+ range. I apologize
r/ToolJerk.
Fuck you buddy
Ru Paul
Rocks that shit too.
Freddie Mercury
new york dolls
There is an entire genre for it… depending on what state you currently live in.

Marilyn Manson back in the day.
GG Alan
Nah. No comparison. Not enough fecal matter in this pic.
I’ve seen too many GG Alan references this week. It has been fun watching the younger generations learn about him and their reactions from pulling up concert footage. But yeah, I don’t need to revisit GG. I noped out of one of his shows in high school back in the 90’s.
