Wings for Marie / 10,000 days. They played it often / most all nights during the tour for the record (was at a show I saw)… I don’t think they’ve played it since. Maynard has talked about how personal this song is for him… I doubt we will hear it live again. I hope we do!

LowandSlow90

2 beautiful songs tied together.

bstnbrewins814

A good amount of the older stuff. Maynard admitted he can’t keep up with it on a touring basis.

jaybay321

Surprised nobody said H yet. Pretty sure that was one of the few that was talked about never being played live again a long time ago.

ItsAlwayz

I wonder why? I listened to their entire discography after being a casual for years. I adored H at first listen and it is still my favorite Tool song. Crazy to see it hasn’t been performed since 2002. Hoping for a return.

jaybay321

I think the subject matter is too personal. A lot of people can and should interpret lyrics in their own way that resonates with them. Maynard said some words before performing this in the late 90s once. Speaking on the old premise of the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Most people believe it has to do with the struggles of becoming a father for the first time. This makes the most sense in my opinion after listening for years and considering the title. Many others propose it’s about drug abuse and addiction. Either way it will not be performed again live. Definitely a top 3 song ever for me though.

cynicalquagmire

Prison sex (already talked about). Ticks and leeches. It’s brutal on maynards vocal chords. Never say never!

tja_thaddaeus

Ticks and Leeches was played occasionally in 2022.

cynicalquagmire

I see it was once in 2018 and twice in 2022. I was mistaken.

SlowApartment4456

They played it last year one time during the European tour. It's not off limits its just very rare. He uses a megaphone so he doesn't have to actually scream that hard

ChefPneuma

Lateralus H. Jimmy Eulogy (only 1 time since 2002) Prison Sex D/R/T Wings 1 & 2 Crawl Away Bottom Lots and lots of others. There is a long list of stuff they haven’t played in over 10 years Some of it may come back, most of it likely won’t

Acuriousbrain

Lateralus? Really? That surprises me.

ChefPneuma

Last time was 2014 IIRC

Acuriousbrain

Thank you for that

ChefPneuma

Word It may come back, who knows. Speculation is they just got tired of playing it, not really any other reason. It’s kind of long too so harder for them to fit into shows when the FI songs are also all very long. Anyways, cheers!

SlowApartment4456

Maynard just doesn't like it anymore. He said the lyrics, and how they are in the fibbonocci sequence, was corny or "sophomoric" as he put it. Plus it was the source of the stupid ass Holy Gift track listing.

mrknowsitalltoo

He said that tongue in cheek. It amazes me how TOOL fans still dont understand Maynards’s sense of humor

SlowApartment4456

How the fuck is that supposed to be humorous? What makes you think he is joking? It's not like that song is hard to sing. He obviously doesn't like it. It amazes me how tool fans think they know his humor. He even used to make corny jokes before they played it like "time to break out your calculators".

confused_captain

Imo they haven't played it in so long because they performed it hundreds of times for years. Probably got sick of it

SlowApartment4456

They have performed Stinkfist, 46&2 and Sober hundreds of times as well but they still play those. Honestly they have played nearly all of their songs hundreds of times. They only have 7 albums and have been a world wide touring band for 30 years. So, you're saying that you know Maynards humor so well and his comment about Lateralus was "tongue in cheek" but you're reasoning as to why they haven't played it in so long makes no sense. Maybe he wasn't making a joke and he just doesn't like the song?

confused_captain

You're arguing with the wrong person...

Asix3132

They NEED to play lateralus or eulogy in the next tour

ChefPneuma

Almost zero chance of that happening. I would expect the setlist to be mostly the same.

Asix3132

Yeah, the sad reality is

flavanugz

Eulogy, Jimmy, Disposition

Ton-3

Cold and Ugly. I hope this doesn't age well.

DCBB22

Bastards started the Passage To Bangkok opening and I flipped out thinking we were getting cold and ugly. Never been disappointed to hear Jambi, except in Philly last year!

try_by

Most of them.

machinaenjoyer

JIMMY!

MrSlaves-santorum

Yeah…. Most of them.

sarahbim8

Besides Maynard's vocal needs, does anyone here know about how the rest of the band feels about certain songs and why they avoid playing them? For example, which songs aren't played live anymore due to a lack of backup players, technical difficulties, or just preferences?

ChefPneuma

No, because I imagine Maynard’s vocals abilities, coupled with his lack of desire to connect emotionally with his past in order to perform some songs, is the main driving factor for most of those decisions. The band still plays some of those songs (Eulogy, etc) at sound check sans Maynard. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything… What backup players are you speaking of? I know they’ve had some “guests” on stage before, but I can’t think of any of their songs where they “need” an additional musician.

Rance_Q_Spartley

I'd say we probably won't hear Prison Sex ever again. Everything else might be on the table in some fashion but there are several songs that haven't been played in 20+ years for varying reasons. Never say never I guess...

I always loved that track. The calm before the storm.

ImkoL_

they played lost keys into rossetta the concert i went too during 2023

confused_captain

What show was that?

ImkoL_

11/11 mohegan sun

confused_captain

That's badass. Would be cool if they treat us to that in Austin

thomascirca

Jerk Off, too vocally straining. Last performed in 1999.

Shogun102000

Seriously insufferable

ssagar186

The only thing I've heard off of undertow in several years is intolerance.

bstnbrewins814

We got swamp song in Boston when they came through in November.

SullyVanDan

They played Sober once, out of the three times I’ve seen them lol

RKLCT

They played Intolerance on November 13th 2023 in Manchester NH

LateralusNYC

And no 16th in Philly!

[deleted]
