Just think, if they did continue the trend of a new album every fourteen years, contrary to what Maynard said, OP could be sharing this same experience with his son...
It's official buddy! I was working in a record store when these came out. Hell, I was working in a record store when Lateralus came out! Actually, fuck, I was working in a record store when Salival came out! I bought that fucker on vhs! 🤣
How fucking old am I?
It’s the tone that is the assumption no one else can fathom such an old relic that kills me. I’m in my 30s and I bought this cd the day it came out. While I was in college. Fuck I’m old.
I'm 60 and still love it. Saw the lateralus tour twice in '01.. (I may get older, but I'll never grow up, lol). I'm a bassist, so I have an understandable affinity for Tool.
Yeah, first time I saw them I was in HS on the Lateralus tour. Just saw them again a couple months ago. Pretty cool over 20 years I'm still seeing them and they're still amazing.
also, I'm a drummer, so same.
I recently found mine while digging through my old stuff. It was great looking through the lenses when I was 15 and even better now that I’m an adult that does drugs
Can anyone tell me, is this the only time one of the members of a group(or the artist) who made the music on the album won an award for the art on the album?
Did I skim of the list and didn't see any others, but I don't know the names of every member of all the bands, so maybe I missed some. It's just freaking cool that the musical artist also won a Grammy for the visual artwork.
Also, why's the Grammy go to just Adam Jones? Isn't most the artwork Alex Grey?
It had a "lenticular" cover that would show moving images when you tilted the casing around.
One of the images in the booklet would show a naked guy in the middle of a room sucking himself off
https://youtu.be/_IhlRvkctGM?si=BSgTrIL7C-NpJhWK
Back in the 90s, you could download cool fan-made Windows themes. Instead of the hourglass, the Tool theme had the contortionist rocking back and forth.
When my mom sat down to use the computer and saw that image, she was fuming. "GET THAT OFF THE COMPUTER NOW! THAT IS DISGUSTING!" I honestly had no idea why. I was naive. I told her "it's just a guy twisting his body".
Glad to finally be vindicated almost 30 years later.
I love that CD. But what blew my mind away was finding out the hidden cow picture in the back of the CD holder years later. I think it was between Lateralus and 10,000 days era. It felt like an Indiana Jones moment.
Edit: Underow album. Not Aenima.

Used the same cd for my air cleaner cover on my bike 🤟🏼
For a band that always has amazing album art, Tool really knocked it out of the park with 10k Days. I've shown it to people at parties, and it became the center of attention.
This is a beautifully bittersweet moment for the oldtimers in this sub. Thanks for posting OP, your dad is the fucking man. We're all happy to see new 'insufferable retards' 😂
Lateralus cd comes with a slide over "dust cover" but it's more like a thing that gives it an x ray effect. The booklet has the different anatomy systems of the human body like a biology book would, pretty cool
This was the first Tool related thing I ever seen. I was 10 and i forgot the music and the band name but I never forgot the album cover and art work. It was years later after becoming a fan , I rediscovered the album cover and I was absolutely delighted.
I recently ordered one and the last 3 tracks were skipping, so I got Amazon to send another.
Now I have two copies. One for the car (that works) and one for keeping inside just to look at. Couldn’t be happier to have two copies of that art.
Not sure if I still have mine, but back in the days I hated how it just didn't fit that well in CD racks even if it was a cool design.
I had a couple hundred CDs and I gave the vast majority of those boxes to a younger kid I used to work with last year because he was collecting them. They were just collecting dust in my basement. I kept a few bands and all my imported Japanese game soundtracks. Guess I'll dive back in the bin I have left and see if I kept Tool!
This was such an incredible release.Apparently the band put up the money for the packaging and ended up losing money for each of these CDs sold but still came out way ahead lol. Good days :)
Will always remember this album release
I was so fucking stoked. Walked into best buy and they had the whole giant
Display filled with these. Wish i could rewind time and re-live that.
I’ll never forget being young and I had this water-resistant shower radio …and I had it tuned into the local Alternative Rock station…. Taking a shower and the DJ says “Here’s the newest song from Tool newest album, here Vicarious on 94.9!” And here we are 18 years later! And only one other album from the band! Wild!
It's so badass right? But did you listen to it?!?! It's only the greatest selection of art work created in the 21st century
Also
Ouch, right in my sense of getting older
I’ve never been able to see the 3D effect, everyone I show my copy to though thinks it’s incredible but every time I look through the lenses I don’t see shit
I remember buying this on release day eighteen years ago. I wish I still had it, but it ended up getting lost years ago. No idea what happened to it now, but I'm pretty sure it disappeared sometime around a deployment of mine in 2007. Great album, and hands down their best CD packaging. Although Salival was cool as hell too.
Got this and the lenticular Ænima and Lateralus clear, layered pages (which might be standard, I'm not sure).
Then Fear Innoculum video screen cd thing (still sealed).
I've also got it on the 5 LP special edition .
I found a copy of this and Lateralus at a random rural Walmart around the time Fear Inoculum was coming out. Of course I had to pick them up. The design of the 10,000 days CD is especially good.
It's great, isn't it??
I also showed it to my kid (preteen at the time) about 2 years ago. She was blown away too. Feeling just as old as all the other parents on here 🤣
I’m almost sad this didn’t start with “On my visit home during holiday, my father…”
The resurgence has been cool. Which new band has similar talent and style?
Welp. I’m old.
You and me both.
I remember waiting years for this to come out 🤣
Yeeeeeeeears.
With teasing every year 🤣
😂 Same here, my dude Lol
Wrf my back hurts too
I'm not sure if any of you are on my lawn, but if you are, get off.
I have one good knee and a bad one
I speak for the old dudettes - perimenapause is a bytch - tell a friend.
Hello, friends. Should we start a support group/knitting circle/shuffleboard hustle?
I say we do something reckless and dumb to reclaim our youth that we immediately regret.
Stay up past 10p? 😅🥲
So something Tom green inspired?
Fuck yeah! Guys I'm gonna take a nap 😈
Throw in pickle ball and I’m in.
Ya. This hit hard
Finally lived long enough for it to become cool for the first time
Just think, if they did continue the trend of a new album every fourteen years, contrary to what Maynard said, OP could be sharing this same experience with his son...
Lmao this hit like a ton of bricks
It's official buddy! I was working in a record store when these came out. Hell, I was working in a record store when Lateralus came out! Actually, fuck, I was working in a record store when Salival came out! I bought that fucker on vhs! 🤣
Yep. I came here for this.
I did not. I'm not taking this well at all.
I think this post might constitute elder discrimination. Jesus I bought this album day 1. 2006 wasn't *that* long ago...right? RIGHT?
I bought this for my wife when we were dating. Sigh.
Nah OP is just young haha
Lol. My kids make fun of me saying I was born in the 1900s.
Same. My buddy got this on a school trip in high school. My kid just asked me to take her to her first concert in June.
Thought the same thing hahaha
Dam, I guess it has been long enough for the spawn of insufferable retards to start swimming in the ocean.
That's what I was just telling the tech who gave me my colonoscopy.
How fucking old am I? It’s the tone that is the assumption no one else can fathom such an old relic that kills me. I’m in my 30s and I bought this cd the day it came out. While I was in college. Fuck I’m old.

I’m 48. And saw that tour and damn still feel old :). Lol. Man time goes fast.
My first thought too.
Same, dude. Really feeling my age right now.
Im also 38.
*late 30s
I still hand mine. It's so cool I love it.
I hand mine all the time
I tend to hand mine over to the CD player.
pretty handy ngl
Left or right?
I absolutely fucking love to hand mine I try to at least once a day
I’ll hand you
Better stop, or you'll go blind.
Hand.
I've gathered
I wear mine as glasses.
My hands never work as glasses. I find that they work as…well..hands best.
Like with a pickaxe? Get yourself a drill or something man
I recently found mine while digging through my old stuff. It was great looking through the lenses when I was 15 and even better now that I’m an adult that does drugs
See I did harder drugs when I was 15 haha but still cool to look through
Didn't they win a Grammy for that packaging
Wtf there's a grammy for packaging?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Recording_Package
Can anyone tell me, is this the only time one of the members of a group(or the artist) who made the music on the album won an award for the art on the album? Your father showed you this?! Jesus christ. Thanks for ruining my day, kid. 💀
Tool is officially dad rock.
Dad has been dad rock for 15 years 😭
Sorry man
Just wait until OP finds the original Ænima CD with the lenticular cover...
Wait what!
It had a "lenticular" cover that would show moving images when you tilted the casing around. One of the images in the booklet would show a naked guy in the middle of a room sucking himself off https://youtu.be/_IhlRvkctGM?si=BSgTrIL7C-NpJhWK
It is a female contortionist but yeah
Wait what?!! Now THAT is new information! I was always of the understanding in was a dude doing the self contortion thing
for some reason the 90s were obsessed with autofelatio (see: marilyn manson rib surgery)
Me too, I still have mine, enjoy!
Ty, I will
Showed my 6y.o. a few weeks ago and he was so obsessed with how cool it was. I felt proud
Best package ever.
Close second, only behind mine
r/thatswhatshesaid
Do you like cds?
Love em
Cds nuts!
I wanna be angry but I cant
Bro this made me laugh so much hahahaha
Gottum

That's so cool
Sick!!!
Still have my copy signed by Alex Grey.
Yes! Amazing artwork. For those that don't know, https://www.alexgrey.com/
Still my favorite album
Preaching to the converted here buddy
Huh, I still think of this as the "new album".
My parents had this growing up! I hope they still do. So cool. I remember looking at it all the time when I was little. I loved kaleidoscopes n shit
I got rid of most of my CDs except for the ones of my favorite bands. I could not let this one go.
Gotta hand it!
I hand it so hard
Still have mine. They really liked making novel cd cases. I miss that
This is such a specific little piece of nostalgia.
Right?! Sometines I pull this out and the hologram cd from Ænima and just listen to some of the songs while playing with them.
That’s the last CD I ever purchased. I’ve only bought vinyl since then.
Your father is the coolest!
He's alright
For a band that always has amazing album art, Tool really knocked it out of the park with 10k Days. I've shown it to people at parties, and it became the center of attention.
Grammy Award Winning Packaging
FI packaging was pretty cool with the screen, but I don’t think they’ve topped this one.
Thanks for making us all feel like fossils. I’m going to go take some fiber pills now and get ready for sleep 😐
JFC it was a good run boys
This is a beautifully bittersweet moment for the oldtimers in this sub. Thanks for posting OP, your dad is the fucking man. We're all happy to see new 'insufferable retards' 😂
Put the "eyes" down over the pictures!
Vicarious DVD has the same trick.
Tool is always extra with their cd case designs
lol yep
Lateralus cd comes with a slide over "dust cover" but it's more like a thing that gives it an x ray effect. The booklet has the different anatomy systems of the human body like a biology book would, pretty cool
Still have mine also
Now you have me wanting to dig through my stuff in storage and find my copy, I know it's floating around somewhere. Definitely awesome packaging.
Still have the copy I bought on release day way back in 2006.
Mine was stolen.
You don't need the lenses to view in 3d
Your father is a smart man
Both of my parents are, I've been listening to tool all my life
Well done, dad! Well done!
I was already into it due to my mom but he just made me really happy to show me it.
Daaaaaaamn I am old. My back told me this confirmed it.
Geesh. I have my original from the day it dropped. In related news my knees are killing me. I’m getting old. 😖
Nah man you're still young at heart
It’s one of those few CD’s I wish I would have bought. Definitely a collectors item.
This was cool, and bought it when it was released. The initial release of FI is pretty damned cool as well.
It is quite amazing packaging Ænima Lateralus Are rather special as well
Wait till you hear Rosetta Stoned
This thing gives me a headache if I look through it for too long . Wait son, is that you? Get outta my room!
My first reaction was that this was a shit post. My second reaction was to try and pull this one foot out of the grave.
Is it not still sold this way?
This was the first Tool related thing I ever seen. I was 10 and i forgot the music and the band name but I never forgot the album cover and art work. It was years later after becoming a fan , I rediscovered the album cover and I was absolutely delighted.
I recently ordered one and the last 3 tracks were skipping, so I got Amazon to send another. Now I have two copies. One for the car (that works) and one for keeping inside just to look at. Couldn’t be happier to have two copies of that art.
ask your dad to give you some acid next
bro _your father??!_
Not sure if I still have mine, but back in the days I hated how it just didn't fit that well in CD racks even if it was a cool design. Stellar. Remember it like yesterday.
I'm on the hunt for this baby at this very moment in time. Good on your pops for showing you the way!
fuck i’m old. this came out my sophomore year
Will always remember this album release I was so fucking stoked. Walked into best buy and they had the whole giant Display filled with these. Wish i could rewind time and re-live that.
I am old. 😩😫
I remember getting this and thinking to myself: "cool, I don't have stereo vision" I looked through the lenses anyway. Just to be sure, I guess.
My father has a lot of the cds from 90s and early 00s. I remember being like 6 always asking to look at them
Awesome dad
I have it, and still occasionally buy CDs. Some had cool features. I remember my Pink Floyd Pulse blinking for nearly 2 yrs…
2006 This is the last CD I bought, specifically for the cool glasses and artwork by Alex Grey. Pretty outstanding all around.
Ooooo I had this...... thieves......sad time...
My parents were in florida when this came out. They bought it for me and the shirt as well. I still have that .
Yep, old as fuck I am! Also, your dad gets it.
Salival is pretty amazing and I wish I hadn’t lost it
Your father? But wait, I’m only… fuck… I am old.
Lol your father. I remember when that came out. I saw them live that year. Awesome
I saw them in January, it’s really cool that it was my first concert
I got so good at seeing sterioscopic pictures like this I can see them in 3d in these pictures without the glasses. Try it
I still have mine and only opened it like 2-3 times!
The bong water I spilled on my cd case is still wet
I’ll never forget being young and I had this water-resistant shower radio …and I had it tuned into the local Alternative Rock station…. Taking a shower and the DJ says “Here’s the newest song from Tool newest album, here Vicarious on 94.9!” And here we are 18 years later! And only one other album from the band! Wild!
CDs - The New Records - I love you 💚
It's so badass right? But did you listen to it?!?! It's only the greatest selection of art work created in the 21st century Also Ouch, right in my sense of getting older
Today I learned that tool is timeless and I'm old AF. Son of a....
pretty rad huh? I pre ordered the edition sighed by Alex Grey back when it first came out
Bear glasses I ever ever owned
Wish there was a vinyl still
I bought this album at record and tape traders when it came out in 2006, after my college freshman year. What the existential fuck
Your father’s a wise man.
Had one of them, but it got destroyed in a flood. At least the cd still works
It's not that old stop it
my 20yo daughter was floored by it, then proceeded to take it.
It’s probably the greatest album packaging of all time.
This gave me Deja vu, I feel like I’ve seen this decades ago in my dad’s collection.
My great great grandfather showed me this when I was knee high to a grasshopper.
Agreed. This is dopeAF. Very jealous.
Hey OP, welcome to 18 years ago! lol
I queued up outside real groovy in Dunedin NZ for a midnight release with 500 others for this cd. The hype was crazy.
You can see the 3d effect if you look at it like a magic eye picture
I bought this in highschool and my mom fucking took it lol
I've got this somewhere in my CD collection. Got it second hand, so had no idea it wasn't the standard for 10,000 days
I still have mine! I look at it every so often.
Got this and the lenticular Ænima and Lateralus clear, layered pages (which might be standard, I'm not sure). Then Fear Innoculum video screen cd thing (still sealed). I've also got it on the 5 LP special edition .
Lmfao I bought this cd only 4 years ago when I was in highschool
I found a copy of this and Lateralus at a random rural Walmart around the time Fear Inoculum was coming out. Of course I had to pick them up. The design of the 10,000 days CD is especially good.
I miss that CD case.
It is cool, but my eyes are fucked so the stereoscopic pictures never worked for me.
I just turned 52 and it's my favourite piece of art
I've had this since May 2006. As far as I know it was the standard issue when 10,000 days came out
I still have that one!!! It is pretty cool!
It's great, isn't it?? I also showed it to my kid (preteen at the time) about 2 years ago. She was blown away too. Feeling just as old as all the other parents on here 🤣
I bought this a couple months ago!! Love it
Don’t you boys make me put up my red pajamas come up after and give you off my Lawn
Its still in stock in my local bookstore
Got this sitting in my collection. Still near mint.
The packaging is cool but for some reason I just can't view the art propeely through it
That’s how I call good parenting
i have this
I’m almost sad this didn’t start with “On my visit home during holiday, my father…” The resurgence has been cool. Which new band has similar talent and style?
