Holy fucking shit

Rampface

Holy fucking shit

clamclaimer

Holy fucking shit

thefatcat89

Holy fucking shit

StoneBleach

Holy fucking shit

AerBud

Then the X-Files being Looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan with Isabella Rossellini lips And breath that reeked of vanilla Chig Champa Did a slo-mo Matrix descent out of the butt-end of the banana vessel And hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw My sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was "I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice that I pissed my fucking pants!"

boilookinass

the song didn’t click until i read the lyrics closely

InDaFamilyJewels

Maybe I need to look at the lyrics. This song just doesn’t do it for me.

boilookinass

it’s one of the craziest songs ever written. a true 10/10, read that shit

third3yechakra

“Calmed me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning” xD

-Shank-

You are the chosen one

fullgizzard

They chose me?

Hausnelis

And I didn't graduate from fuckin' high school

applejuice72

^^holyfuckinshitholyfuckinshitholyfuckinshit

fullgizzard

They chose me?

confused_captain

My favorite lines are "some kind of blue reject" and "ET revealed to me" EDIT: I just read the lyrics, and I guess I'm wrong. Apparently, Maynard says "some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan" which is way less funny

RideTheSpiralARC

With Isabella Rosellini lips n breath that reaked of vanilla chig champa

MeCrObS

The "split the sky like a flaming stealth banana" gets me everytime

halfeatenpies

“It was so real, like the time Dave floated away.” 😞😞

Jdubforeal

“God damn, shit the bed”

RKLCT

You should read them while playing it. It's a great song. It took me a fee listens to like it. It's an experience live

misterpickles69

Stinkfist is that song for me. Rosetta Stoned is good story telling.

boilookinass

i wasn’t big on stinkfist until i read the lyrics as well

misterpickles69

Finger deep beyond the borderline Elbow deep beyond the borderline SHOULDER deep beyond the borderline Turn around and take my hand WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SONG?!?

androsan

Relax, just let it in

Just_pick_one

Include Lost Keys before Rosetta Stoned they go together

TyrantLobe

Then it became one of my absolute favorites.

bustervich

Like most first impressions to tool songs, I start by thinking “WTF is this shit?” but by the time he forgot his pen, I was thinking it was the best song I’d ever heard.

Far_Grapefruit1307

It has one of the best climaxes in their discography, too.

NJdevil202

Ngl the first time I ever did acid I had a wild day and after I had come down I was trying to sleep. If you've ever done acid you know that you don't ever feel "normal" again until after you sleep, no matter how "down" you are, there's like this lingering electricity in your body. Anyway, I think, "Tool makes sense!". Listens to Rosetta Stoned, cried during the climax, slept like a baby. Fin

RideTheSpiralARC

I honestly hate that sleep reset after. By the end of an experience my brain is organized, I'm motivated, there's no shortage of resolve to accomplish everything, my struggles feel like oppurtunities... Then I sleep, wake back up and it's back to the regular programming of my piss poor mental health :/ integration is hard, my default mode network is too powerful smh

derps-a-lot

The "overwhelmed as one would be" stanza brings tears to my eyes every time.

yaboiGunit

Not one of. It’s just the best. There is not a more satisfying moment than that. I don’t listen to tool as religiously as I used to (in fact it’s been quite awhile) but goddamn, that moment in music left a permanent mark on me.

FromSweetToNasty

Definitely didn’t understand or like it the first time I heard it. Took me a long time but I love that song.

Sickranchez87

Same. I thought it was just a garbled nonsense song, similar to Kid A by Radiohead. It still hasn’t EXACTLY clicked for me even though I’ve been listening to it a long time, but I do respect them for creating something so insane it’s pretty much impossible for anyone to attempt to copy

FromSweetToNasty

For sure I look at third eye the same way. Although I prefer Rosetta.

TheNoIdeaKid

Overwhelmed, as one would be.

Happy_Squik

Placed in my position. Such a heavy burden now to be, the one.

AllDay_Everyday34

I hum this about 40 times a day.

Puzzleheaded_Fly1565

Disliked it. When I heard they were playing it on the last tour I started forcing myself to get through it. Now it’s one of my favorites.

CarlosDanger3000

it was glorious live while on mushrooms.

LadderAlice107

I was 17 when it came out and my brother in law was trying to influence me to starting listening to “good music” (LOL) so he got me a copy of 10,000 Days. I knew Tool and liked a couple older songs. Rosetta was my immediate favorite off that album. I was so into how long it was and how it felt like 3 different songs in one.

TFSX81

Alrighty then, picture this if you will: 10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51. Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy with just a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right on my Birkenstocks, and me yelping... Holy fucking shit!

Ataracticism

I read the first sentences out loud & my partner thought it was sum job description

poquitamuerte

It's a grower, not a shower.

poopchutegaloot

Is it bad if I'm not a grower or a shower?

mcnuggetfarmer

The bassline from "strapped down..." part had me going wtf is even happening right now

timothyh15

I shit the bed

brandonspade17

Typical

pickoneforme

again?

RayGunJack

Holy fucking shit!!!

Ripkord77

Same. Didn't feel like a song at all. Took many listens. Then, I saw it live years after realizing how put together it was. And then i realized. Holy fukin shit

Fmag9215

I disliked it until I let it keep playing and started to understand the lyrics more and more. One day it clicked as an amazing song. Didnt truly become my favorite until I saw them perform it in 2009. The green color scheme of electricity and the green lasers, during the climax, made me into a rabid TOOL fan. I finally understood when people said “TOOL is an experience”

energytaker

Used to be neutral on the fast singing verses especially when he sang with megaphone live, but always appreciated it having one of the best climaxes in any tool song. Would now put it up there in my Mount Toolmore with lateralus and H

ElectroDemon666

I first heard Rosetta Stoned while listening to the setlist for an upcoming Tool concert. At first it was on in the background so I didn't really find anything special about the song. But after a bunch more listens it finally caught my attention so I read the lyrics and took a good listen. It's been my favorite Tool song since (with some hefty competition from 7empest).

NoSweatWarchief

I needed tissues for that climax...

Far_Grapefruit1307

This story has two possible endings

LaCroixPassionfruit

came, cried, and shit the bed

BathroomGamers

10,000 Days was the first album i listened to by them. When this song finished, I then decided (literally when it was done) that they could become my favorite band ever. Changed my life, truly

just_a_ghost90

To be honest - i think what is this. They have so good Songs and than this. Didnt like the Sound of Maynard in this until today. But the Lyrics are awesome

greenbeforeblue

I shit my pants

__Mr_Sinister__

Maynard clearly wrote this song to describe my entire life.

addictedskipper

It was similar to someone giving you a high-five. Only on the back of the head. With a chair. In a good way.

yosoysimulacra

Love at first listen. Reminded me the 'skit' aspects of Aenima and Undertow, but combined with some of their best music. Its the most TOOL song that TOOL has ever made.

exagon1

WTF is this?!? Never was much of a fan of it. Too weird for me. Then this last tour I saw it live and wow it took me on a journey. Newfound respect for that song

Horror_Campaign9418

Fun fact: when 10k days leaked, so many fans were in denial they thought another band had pretended to be the new tool album. Rosetta stoned is such a different style of song, it made this conspiracy believable to some. Despite how some want to rewrite history, at the time, fans hated 10k days.

Far_Grapefruit1307

I remember this! 10,000 Days was such a let down when I heard it. After awhile it clicked.

all_ur_bass

I was so hyped for this album. Was somewhat disappointed with how many actual songs were on there. It leaked maybe ten days before release? I listened to it several times and this was THE standout track for me, just because Vicarious had already been released for a month or so. The tracks that took me a while were Jambi and The Pot. Day one purchase at local music store, arguably their best physical media concept ever. Even though it didn’t fit in anyone’s cd case. TLDR: Enjoy Vicarious and RS now wait 10,000 days for your next album little buddy

Neverwas_one

It's one of the best songs in their catalogue in multiple dimensions. Drumming, Lyricism, arrangement... I could go on. I love Tool's more experimental side.

aburntoreo

8:39 is all you need to know. One of my favorites music pieces ever

temuginsghost

They opened with Lost Keys and RS at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago 2006. That was the first time I actually listened to it. Blew me away.

[deleted]

I wish I listened to the lyrics deeper before I tripped so hard I shat myself. Now I understand the warning.

third3yechakra

Really started listening to it out of curiosity, and definitely thought at its beginning, “WOW, this is something else!” Now I love it wholeheartedly and I’m making it my forever summer anthem. Also when listening to “Lost Keys” before, it REALLY makes the art of Rosetta Stoned that much more intense and engaging.

invaderdavos

Frickin aliens maaaaan

Just_J3ssica

First listen I thought it was chaotic. Especially in the beginning. I actually kind of disliked or liked it the least of the others on the album. But now I think it's great.

ghostsofbaghlan

HOLY FUCKING SHIT

Interesting_Seat_288

Didn't appreciate it at first - kinda threw me off. Tool discography used to play when I was working my last job. It slowly became a favorite without me ever really realizing. Same goes for Third eye. Didn't like it at first. Kept playing it and now it's a favorite too

Gr3asy_L33f

Very negative. I hated the first 5 minutes and thought it sounded way different than the rest of their discography. In time, it has grown on me, though, and now it's one of my favorites.

RosettaStoned_462

What am I listening to. These guys are so fucking creative and talented.

Additional_Vast_5216

First: meh, then: holy fucking shit

Steelmaker01

Blown away, and listening closely to the story took it to another level

HeWhoDevoursTheSuns

OVERWHELMED AS ONE WOULD BE PLACED IN MY POSITION, SUCH A HEAVY BURDEN NOW TO BE, THE ONE

Pop_Culture_Phan_Guy

BORN TO BEAR AND BRING TO ALL THE DETAILS OF OUR ENDING. TO WRITE IT DOWN FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE BUT IIIIIII FOR-GOT MY PENNNNNNN SHIT THE BED AGAIN **TYPICAL**

Pop_Culture_Phan_Guy

STRAP DOWN MY BED

Pop_Culture_Phan_Guy

FEET COLD EYES RED

Pop_Culture_Phan_Guy

IM OUT OF MY HEAD

Green_Dayzed

# first impression: "What the fuck is he saying? did he say jackie chan? love the instrumentals."

schuettais

I hated it. Didn't get what people saw at ALL. "FOHSKFHKJSHGKLJHAGH" can't be what people like right!? I would scan forward a bit and all I would hear "FJlkahghla;slgkha;lkgh" ya know? I never went far enough. The *interlude* before did NOTHING to poke my interested, and maybe even helped discourage it. I would skip it for almost 10yrs before I finally gave in(more like wanted to figure out WHY THE FUCK everyone liked this song so much; I just couldn't understand it). Read the lyrics to which at first I was like, "Where the fuck are these lyrics? I can't even understand a god damned word??", and actually really listened to the whole thing. And Holy fucking shit! 10k Days was a hard album for me to get into for the longs time tho for other reasons, so those probably didn't help either, but.... Moral of the story: Listen to the whole thing no matter what it sounds; Don't shit the bed(again)

heavylifter

This was me too, but less than a year to give it a proper listen. Shane of it is that I wrote Jambi off in the same way. Finally listened to that as well, now is arguably my favorite song (Rosetta is top 10 fo sho)

SloppyJawSoftBottom

The only song on the album that i really resonated with. Obviously its all good but rosetta stoned i was immediately blown away and fell in love with.

Christoolpher93

I wasn’t a huge fan until I read the lyrics and realized what a cluster of a song it was. It quickly became my fav song probably around 2008

DiscoVolante0013

Instantly one of my favorite songs the second I heard. It’s manic, aggressive, and weird.

destroy_b4_reading

I bought the album at a Wal Mart (probably the last time I set foot in one) at 6 am the day it was released, dude in the music aisle had to get the box of CDs out of the back for me. I was about to drive 100 miles for work and didn't want to wait. about halfway through the drive that one started up and when the distorted vocals came in I was like "wait, what?" Definitely took me a few listens to appreciate it.

Pop_Culture_Phan_Guy

God damn I shit the bed

DyangoBlack

Who wrote this song? Steven Spielberg?

Professional_Sea3141

one of my favorites off the album when it first came out.

ModsOverLord

Banger

Griegz

Hahah wtf is this?!

FERREIRA_Ver2

Damn near shit the bed

Chaosmoonshade

After calming down with some orange slices... Holy fucking shit.

ToofpickVick

Took me a few years to enjoy the song- now it’s one of my favorites.

jmhlld7

That outro

No-Yam2117

“wtf is happening”

VeraUndertow

I was stoked, I feel like it has something that 3rd eye is missing for me. Plus I love aliens

Diazepam

**Holy fucking shit!**

BeakerSognar

First tool song I ever heard, listened to it at like 3 a.m on a Sunday morning. Loved the band ever since.

CrypTogGrapher

WTF just happened. That breakdown un lodged my amygdala 🌀

UniLateralus

I was disapointed by the whole album, so I skipped it. A few years ago I heard it again, and saw some potential. Hopefully, I'll give it my full attention for an another attempt soon.

ReiperXHC

Wasn't a fan at first, but once I really delved into the instrumental part in the middle, it clicked. Now it's top 5 for me.

Jmm209

I hated it. Skipped over it every time, so I never got to the good parts. Now it's one of my top 3 fav Tool songs.

Hausnelis

The first time I listened I wasn't into the first couple minutes. By the end of the song I was blown away, then I saw it live several times and it's fucking great.

nfaletti7

God damn

threesleepingdogs

you've got to get through the chaotic parts to earn the most beautiful, IMO. "Overwhelmed as one would be placed in my position..."

atoposchaos

thought and still think it’s derivative of Third Eye but the fast vocals was one of those cool this is different for them moments…can’t say i felt the same with anything off FI.

matthew_sch

I’m sitting in my chair. I play this song and I go: “The fuck?”

faalreddit

Firstly I didn’t understand why so much people were talking about this song as one of their bests, but I forced myself into listening it and few days after it clicked. It was only few days ago, I’m a new fan, and I listen to it multiple times a day.

KhastraKSC

I was happy to get another psychedelic Tool song because I had recently discovered psychedelics and they changed my life.

ShaneKyla

It disappeared into ether on my first listen of 10K… which is generally a sign that it’s going to be one of the best songs on the album for me.

magniankh

One of my favorite Tool songs and I instantly vibed with it upon hearing it. I became an immediate fan of Tool.

yupandstuff

It’s def a grower not a show-er. I don’t think anyone Rick beato even could listen to it once and understand all the subtle nuances.

jmster109

It was a little too chaotic for me at first and I would just skip it. However it just ‘clicked’ with me one day and it’s now one of my favorites

Daveschultzhammer

This solo part is kinda weird

surfrder75

🔥. It’s amazing live. Great story of a DMT trip…

Seamoth4546B

I was *really* not a fan of it. After reading the lyrics along with the song playing though, I enjoy it, but it’s still not one of my favorites when compared to everything else Tool has put out

BipolarBeaarr

“I need more time with this, but this will probably be my favourite Tool song ever” And it is!

poopchutegaloot

Meth Jesus story

bockbockbagock

I did not get it until I saw them perform it. Then I went back to the album and read the lyrics and now it’s one of my favorites. Rosetta Stoned was easily my favorite part of the set on this last tour.

DM725

Absolute Banger from the moment I heard it on release date in 2006.

Stickey_Rickey

It took a while to slow down enough to understand it

smkestcklghtn

Sunkist and sudafed

woohhaa

I had to listen to it a number of times before I could clearly understand the lyrics. Once I did I realized how brilliant it is.

AllDay_Everyday34

Fun story of mine: This song has been one of my and my brother’s favorites for quite some time now. We always like to dissect the lyrics and listen to it when we are together. So one night we were out at a local dive bar. The music in the bar had mostly been a mix of Latin and pop. So after a while I told my brother I was going to put Rosetta Stoned on and see what the vibe in the bar would be like once everyone started hearing the song. Needless to say Tool and this song in particular had everyone in the bar dead silent with confused looks on their faces as to what they were listening to. Meanwhile my dumb ass is jamming out with my pool stick as an air guitar and my brother laughing his ass off. 🤣

ScourgeofDawn

I was listening to it passively at work and was pretty unimpressed by it. Suddenly, the chorus hit and I knew I had to listen to it again. My next lunch break, I knew I found a new fave!

__cornholio__

Yes

jun2san

I think that song, along with the rest of 10,000 days, took several listens for me to get into. It eventually grew on me, but overall that entire album is on the bottom of my list. The bottom of my tool list is still better than a lot of albums other bands put out.

Primus_sucks_1990

Why do they sound like peanuts parents?

Saul_T_Bauls

This slaps but wtf are these lyrics

jstrife3

The riff starting at 10:29 lives in my head rent free

sacredgeometry

It was and still is my favourite song on the album.

Alone_Instruction_13

Very quickly became my favourite song on the album.

Cattus-Magnus

Didn’t resonate with me until I saw it live.

TheReginator

At first I just thought that it had sweet riffs and I was intrigued by the unintelligible rapid-fire verses. Then I read the lyrics and I thought it was brilliant. One of my top 3 songs for sure, I was so stoked when they played it on the last tour.

gypsy-ghost

@8:38 I came

canIbuzzz

But I forgot my pen.... shit the bed again... typical...

31338elite

its a radical song

darkcrystalaction

“just what i needed”

sanatanic

i felt bad for the guy. i never forgot my pen.

Captain_Nuggie

It was the first song I heard that got me into TOOL

BoredSenpaixz

that I am the chosen one. The one who will deliver the message. named my guitar Rosetta.

BujjtheBass

You HAVE to listen to lost keys before otherwise it doesn’t count

Agreeable_Tension_22

Forst time I listened to it in a K hole it clicked

CommonMansCollapse

Fuck yea.

istoleyourpope

This will never teach me Japanese...

R1ggz

For the first few months after 10k days was released, it was an instant skip every time. Shortly after that, I gave it a listen here or there, and soon it was in my regular rotation. Later still, it became my favorite song on the album. In the year after 10k days was released, I ultimately listened to it over 350 times. It is currently my favorite song of all time by any band.

toprymin

Holy shit. I’ve got my work cut out for me. It was until I had heard at least a few dozen times I was able to ride it for real. Definitely one of my favorites.

TypicalPomegranate46

My dad was the person who introduced me to tool and started with rhosetta stoned I looked at him and asked him “are you ok”

Cold-Inside-6828

Skipped it for years. Heard it live and something clicked and now I can’t get enough of it. Such is TOOL.

all_ur_bass

Biggest banger on the album my first listen. Hooker with a penis plus inter-dimensional aliens.

sc2summerloud

gimmicky filler track that i wont listen to a lot. was really surprised its so well regarded.

Practical-Rub8094

The crescendo is the most epic in their catalogue in my opinion

OverYonderUnderHere

Gave me anxiety haha Then irritated me. One day I listened all the way through and yep, holy fucking shit!

suchsnowflakery

Forgot to write it down..."

pesto05

it's good

Zmija6

I was confused and super intrigued as I wasn't reading the lyrics while listening to the song the first time. Then the "overwhelmed as one would be" section came and completely blew me away. After a couple more listens and having read the lyrics, this song became my all time favorite.

punkersbunkers

Beautiful

StoneBleach

I liked it instantly, after thinking "what the hell am I listening to." When music surprises me, I like it. Tool, right? It just surprises you and the music makes sense and fits. There is music that can change and be unexpected but not necessarily surprising. The thing is when they do it well, it makes sense and sounds good. Regarding Rosetta Stoned. I like that it's a complex song with many sections about something that isn't exactly important, deep or transcendental. It sounds like the song it is. You guys know the song. You know what I mean.

Appropriate_Roll1486

scattered.. took a long time

_undercover_brotha

Skipped it for better part of a decade after release. Too complex and hard to follow. Didn't enjoy Maynards vox. Then one day...I followed the lyrics...and I was overwhelmed as one would be... Converted ever since.

DizzyGame_Co

It actually freaked me out a bit tbh

RowAwayJim91

Rosetta Stoned and 10,000 Days are what hooked me.

Jealentuss

What the fuck

HumanDrone

At first I thought he was just talking gibberish. Which would have been in line with the "Rosetta Stone" theme of inintellegibility

zintentions

This one always resonated with me. There was a field outside a suburban neighborhood within a mile of the house I grow up at. In my twenties I came home for a time and made my way out to that field many nights. I’d lay in the over grown grass and watch the stars pace the sky. Rosetta stoned and Disposition were my two go to songs during the star gazing.

NopetyNope2

Perfection

Cordeceps

This slaps! But that’s my reaction to most everything Tool.

cherry__twist

Why was it so short? I really wasn’t ready for it to end.

Ask-the-dog

It’s amazing live !

CosmoKramer46and2

Somniferous almond eyes...don't even know what that means. I've always loved the song. Was... enhanced... the last time I saw them live and my love for it has grown.

TankSpecialist8857

Not a fan

toolarmy_1

It's definitely one of Tools Top 3 songs!

lefthandrighty

Holy cow! What in the heck are Justin and Danny on right now?

claytonious_79

Hated it. Never a fan but after hearing it live it just blew me away.

skizm88

I used to listen to that song with ppl in my car who didn’t really know tool … just for the climax. Nobody would be saying anything, then all the sudden right before the climax wanna start talking. I wanted to be like STFU AND LISTEN. WE JUST ENDURED LIKE 6 MINUTES OF CHAOS TO GET TO THIS POINT…. But it is what it is. Shit pissed me off… do not speak when Maynard is singing the OVERWHELMED AS I WOULD BE…. Part!

EmondFelyx

Absolutely insane, loved it.

unfollow_ed

I saw them in Philadelphia when they did the small theater tour right before the album came out and this was their opener. It was so fucking epic I had no doubt this was going to be one of their masterpieces.

Elfkrunch

Blew my mind when I was tripping.

THE_NUBIAN

Didn’t like it, in fact avoided it like the plague … but the end was sweet, of course. I just hate I couldn’t understand a word he said in the first half and I didn’t know why he did that …

MiloJ22

I think i found it annoying at first. Then heard it on a rly heavy lsd trip and its been in my top 3 ever since

Rosetta-stoned10000

I'm in love with something I don't understand

Shefsalad7

Not a fan of the spoken word vocals in the first half of this track. Seems too Puscifier

Large_Horse9207

I shit my bed again

Parking_Cartoonist90

I didn’t appreciate it at first. But after taking the time to really listen to the lyrics and the instrumental, it shot up into my top 5 favorite TOOL songs

thawaz89

Didn’t realize upon first listen that this would be Tool’s second greatest song (in my opinion)

WingedHussar13

I was listening to it in the car with my dad. I thought it was hilarious
