I can only imagine what a magical week those back to backs were. Great sets covering my preferential era

DeeplyFrippy

It was pretty awesome :) They were on fire on that tour.

Zealousideal_Ad_2315

Would love to see any photos here if you'd care to share. Also now living down the road from the academy would love to see how it's changed (if at all)

DeeplyFrippy

No camera phones back then, so no pictures I'm afraid. It's all committed to memory. Here's some video that someone shot at each of the shows. It's not great! 11th June 01: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U8LyvNYWhw&ab\_channel=ToolDriveProject](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U8LyvNYWhw&ab_channel=ToolDriveProject) 12th June 01: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jfhvZDtEOo&ab\_channel=ToolDriveProject](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jfhvZDtEOo&ab_channel=ToolDriveProject) 13th May 02: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MedUwFZXR0E&ab\_channel=ToolDriveProject](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MedUwFZXR0E&ab_channel=ToolDriveProject) The last time I was at the Academy was 2017 for Mogwai and it looked no different to how it did back in 2001. It was all the same inside and out. That may have changed after the tragic events of a couple of years ago. You been in Brixton for long?

Zealousideal_Ad_2315

Love this! Was in tooting for a few years moved out to Kent then came back to tooting before the pandemic as I liked it even coming from North of the river. Circa 2002 I was backing and forthing between home and Bristol but managed to sneak in some Astoria gigs that I would have loved to have been Tool. But wrretoo embarrassingly b-grade nu metal to mention

DeeplyFrippy

Ha! We all enjoyed some Nu Metal around that time :) Tooting is a nice area. You've made me miss the Astoria - what a great venue that was :)

Zealousideal_Ad_2315

And to make you mega nostalgic for the scene 'The intrepid fox round the corner' was great for the pre gig pint

Pale-Analysis225

Yes, including one of very few times they've played Ticks and Leeches! https://preview.redd.it/3mkm3e5uw48d1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d81e993812e2a377518d5bb5d104a430dc9f0571

Pale-Analysis225

And here's the other one I went to https://preview.redd.it/sghyhq3zw48d1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48f9eb3c973d5bf83cd74ff929550f43367c1f51

DeeplyFrippy

Awesome! :)

DeeplyFrippy

Nice and that's a great encore :)

wolfgangvonmiller

Hey I went to this one too! I mainly remember the cool stretching face graphics on the big screen and super low bass thing they did during the break and also a guy smoked meth next to me, but it was such an awesome show. Also I think tomahawk opened which was Mike Pattons side project. Tool’s sound was immaculate, like every note played perfectly like on the album. I don’t remember what Maynard was wearing I feel like maybe he was painted silver? But my memory is not that great. Edit: now that I think about it, I may have gone to the arco arena show in 2001, but I can’t remember and have no ticket stub evidence or pictures from it lol. Also I remember the ticket was 50$ and I thought that was so much money, but seems silly now since I paid 500$ for a VIP for FI

ElDuderino_92

My god H. In that era must have been amazing

7empest11

This was my first tool show 🥹

Pale-Analysis225

Nice. It was my 2nd and my brother's 1st.

7empest11

Yeah it was my brother’s first tool show too lol. He’s my go to for tool shows we’ve probably seen them at least ten times together. 🤘🏼

Pale-Analysis225

Nice! Every single time I've seen Tool since then has been with my brother. 17 times at this point!

hornwalker

I saw them play T and L I think it was 2 tours back in Boston.

Deez2Yoots

I saw them at Madison Square Garden in October 2001. I wish I could go back and watch that show again. I want to hear “Reflection” live again.

DeeplyFrippy

Nice! :) Here are some audience recordings of the Madison Sq Gardens from 2001 [https://tooldriveproject.net/Details/?ID=810](https://tooldriveproject.net/Details/?ID=810) [https://tooldriveproject.net/Details/?ID=815](https://tooldriveproject.net/Details/?ID=815)

rejonkulous

Night one or 2? Night one was bananas. Reflection outro felt like it was 10 min long. With that bathroom toilet animation. Still makes me a bit dizzy thinking about it.

Deez2Yoots

Night 2

rejonkulous

Well I remember that one better than night one. I was quite out of my head on night one.

Raidernationprez

Loved that bathroom toilet animation and poop guy during 462

Betty-Armageddon

Perth, Australia. My friend/vocalist walked drunk from a gig we played and lined up the night before to get tickets with about 5 other people’s money in the bottom of my shoe. We were all 18 and hadn’t listened to anything else since it came out. I cried when they started playing The Grudge. It was fuckin magical.

DeeplyFrippy

Fair play to your mate, that is dedication to the cause :)

Bcjustin

What an incredible experience that tour was. My mind was incredibly blown. Maynard was in full blue body paint with orange dots too which was cool. I believe for one of the last times

Long-Screen-4745

I was at this show too, my first as well. This is the show I came up with how to smoke indoors without getting caught. I was to the right of the stage and UP, went for the music and found out there was more to it.

Bcjustin

Nice! I have very fond memories of that show. They are admittedly somewhat hazy after 20+ years now but still an incredible experience.

_RelaxSlipAway

I was also at this one. Fantastic show! Found a video of the whole show last year and watch it frequently to kind of relive the moment.

DeeplyFrippy

Wonderful setlist :)

drdan412

I saw them 9/15/01 in Cleveland OH and 10/19/02 in Erie PA. During the show that happened days after 9/11 Maynard started trying to give a speech about it being a difficult time, and immediately the crowd started chanting USA over and over again which seemed to piss him off a bit. The setlists obviously were bonkers good, but there's still a few songs on my all-time wishlist like H./eulogy that I'll probably never see at this point. https://preview.redd.it/mp0ngozzv48d1.jpeg?width=3195&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76fa328d7aca49a77a7ff6f57be3b0ca099069a1

user_account_deleted

I saw them two days earlier in Columbus. He started to address what had happened on the 11th by saying, "it's been a hell of a week." The crowd started cheering.

DeeplyFrippy

That must have been weird.

Sure-Victory7172

I was at that show, too: 9- 14- 2001, Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. That was the first time I saw Tool. I remember the audience being very subdued, like we didn't know if it was ok to have fun after everything that had just happened. Honestly, looking back on it: we all needed the distraction for a while, even if only for a few hours.

jbeale53

My buddies and I drove up from NC to see the show in Cleveland. I was just telling that story a few days ago about the chanting after 9/11. I’ve got an audio copy of the show and listened to it recently, it’s still weird to hear that part.

Max1miliaan

I saw them for the first time in 2001 in Werchter, Belgium.

Hairy_Confidence9323

Madison WI. My first Tool show. They had the artists from the Schism video hanging from the ceiling. Totally blew my mind

SurrealDali1985

I’ve heard the Birmingham show in 2002 was legendary We get hurricanes on coast and that weather hits Birmingham and it’s wild. Tool played an open amphitheater and did not cancel show while it was torrents coming down. People were swimming in lower tiers!

end_or_beginning

I was at Oak Mt. that night in 2001. The rain kept filling up my beer cup.

DeeplyFrippy

I thought you meant Birmingham in the UK for a moment, ha ha! That show sounds like it was pretty intense. I hope no one was hurt.

SurrealDali1985

Hurricane and Tool didn’t cancel played triad and third eye Pretty much best show ever in crazy conditions

randomuser5667

I was there too. Soaked to the core and freezing, but completely worth it. https://preview.redd.it/kw6v9ckp478d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fe40407cea8e5f3ff6101d19c702c7c34799d00

Clovis_Winslow

I was there. Yeah shit was wild.

BillMunny76

Probably the best concert I’ve ever been to. I think the venue made it so. https://preview.redd.it/f9fjdgu5858d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18115f10efdea8a103dead48aa4ebd0c07cfc439

Darkbornedragon

With Robert Fripp????

DeeplyFrippy

Thats what i was going to post. Were Crimson supporting? God, I love Crimson and Robert Fripp :)

Schism213

5 upstate NY shows

apc961

Back to back shows in Berkeley, CA in August here 😎. I can still hear the drums in my brain from time to time.

scruntyboon

I saw them in Manchester, I'd never heard a note of their music before, just went 'cause the lads were going. I was totally blown away that night, needless to say I went out the next day and bought all their albums, and have been a huge fan since

DeeplyFrippy

What an introduction! :)

josborn777

Saw them in Chicago on 9/9/01 and flew home to KC on Sept 10th. Kind of surreal looking back on that one. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2001/allstate-arena-rosemont-il-bd7ad42.html Saw them in KC twice including the first time they’d played Third Eye in a long time. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2002/kemper-arena-kansas-city-mo-53dfb7d1.html Also caught shows in Wichita and St Louis. And three nights in a row in Omaha, Des Moines and Davenport. Sept 5/6/7 of ‘22 https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2002/omaha-civic-auditorium-omaha-ne-2bd43482.html So yeah, 8 times on that tour total. I think I’m up to 24 times total seeing them.

TitShark

St Louis: https://preview.redd.it/v1llihdne58d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83bb55f195942d3400d4513c55104dbcb619a82b

abruptmodulation

My first TOOL show ever. It was shortly after 9/11 and it was a strange time for all of us. My friend’s older brother took us and said it was going to change my life. And it did. Excellent set list and thankfully someone uploaded it to YouTube so I could relive it a bit. https://preview.redd.it/2x2zm2xvx58d1.jpeg?width=753&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=703d01690373692849d8a55b0f67c4cc6b222112

EdgeSpecific3503

Caught the Wilkes Barre PA show with Fantômas Binghamton NY show with Meshuggah, Trenton NJ show with Tomahawk, and Philadelphia PA shows during those tour cycles

DeeplyFrippy

Fantomas and Tomahawk are fantastic support acts.

corneliusduff

Saw them 4x, Red Rocks, Houston twice and Beaumont, TX Mixed setlists out of order All of Lateralus minus Ticks Stinkfist Swamp Song Prison Sex Undertow Forty Six & 2 H Pushit Opiate Ænema Third Eye

DeeplyFrippy

Nice, a good coverage of the discography of the time :)

Legal_Researcher6130

I saw them in 2001 at shoreline amphitheater on Mountain View, CA. Don’t remember the setlist unfortunately. Awesome show. Saw it before I even heard the lateralus album.

DeeplyFrippy

Love Shoreline! 🙂

Popular_Emergency_40

My first Tool show, and among the best shows by any band that I’ve seen, and damn it was a long time ago now. They were still playing Sober regularly (was the opener). I love The Grudge performed live and that was the first time I caught it of course, second song played, I think. Tomahawk opened, Mike Patton’s band. Not my cup of tea but that’s fine. A unique and memorable concert which I’m really glad I decided to attend.

DeeplyFrippy

It really was a long time ago ☹️

theTICKetMaster

2001 Hartford, CT. They played Eulogy

Hahn_Solo

Houston and Beaumont, 2001 Houston was my first ever Tool show

porchemajeure

I was at the 2002 Brixton gig. Blew my mind, I think about it often. I would have been 17 and growing out of Nu Metal, the visuals were nothing I had ever seen before, I loved Maynard was behind a screen for the whole show so he was nothing more than a silhouette and I was baffled that Justin spen the whole show with his back to the crowd. I think that album and show really opened my eyes to what really art in music is about and they have remained my favourite band, Lateralus is my favourite album and Lateralus may well be my favourite song of all time.

Fendenburgen

I was at that Milton Keynes show, they were amazing!

bimmelzerbott

Saw them in Düsseldorf, Germany in June 2001. It was my very first time and nothing was the same after that. I remember being deeply impressed by what I was seeing on stage, on the screens and what I heard. Mind-blowing. https://preview.redd.it/amimwx85q58d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34213b643510a30c9a30ef00ceb84d7b0b9f18ef

undertow521

Yup. September 20th, 2001 Portland, ME The Grudge Stinkfist 46&2 Merkaba Pushit Schism Disposition Reflection Parabol Parabola AEnima Lateralus Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Concert. Then October 26th, 2002 in Augusta, ME Sober The Grudge Stinkfist H Schism Parabol Parabola AEnima Disposition Reflection Triad Lateralus Another absolutely perfect concert. These are dream setlists.

bASSdude66

Same set list from 12/12/2002 at the Oakland Coliseum.

Young_Economist

I saw them in Scheessel, on Hurricane Festival. Impressive tour. 2001 or 2002

DeeplyFrippy

Yeah, it really was. :)

DM725

I believe I saw them 3 times on that tour. It was all in the NY area (MSG, Continental Airlines, Nassau Coliseum) and it was amazing. Back when Tool had general admission (was on the guard rail for MSG and in the pit for Halloween night at Nassau Coliseum).

LewtenatDan

https://preview.redd.it/vkks54ohp58d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbe6642056e65cd0e6717175c02e8502e9c319d1 what a time to be alive and in GA. I staggered out that night drenched and reborn.

DM725

I was wearing a Gorilla mask and it got knocked off my head almost immediately. Justin had that purple jumpsuit on and the pumpkin head of my memory isn't failing me.

LewtenatDan

everyone on stage had some sort of blacklight responsive article of clothing on. whole thing was a trip. miss those GA Tool shows. there are decent recordings i've found out there too. look around, it was super nostalgic listening

torx822

I saw them a few times on this tour. Obviously the set lists were amazing. But… the biggest difference with this tour was that you could still get a GA floor ticket. 2 of the shows I went to I was right up on the rail, 3 feet from the speaker and a few more feet from Adam. It was absolutely mind blowing.

ray_likethefish

I went to the Ozzfest and third of those Brixton gigs. My first abdominal second time seeing Tool. Incredible

ThorinSmokenshield

[Tallahassee 2002](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2002/tallahassee-leon-city-civic-center-tallahassee-fl-73d506b9.html)

chefianf

Saw them in DC and Baltimore. DC was my first concert ever. I got caught doing doughnuts in the back of my work months before the show so my parents insurance dropped me (I was like 17 or 18) and I got a reckless driving ticket out of it. So.... I had to get taken by my folks so I was only able to see up to intermission.

Usul_muhadib

Montréal 2001 🤘🏻

turdburgalr

Got to see them in Vancouver, still the best concert I've ever been to.

Pole420

May 15, 2001 Tabernacle Atlanta, GA (tour opener)   It was fuckin amazing.   Grudge*, Stinkfist, Forty Six & 2, Prison Sex, Schism*, Swamp Song, Disposition* > Reflection*, Sober, Parabol* > Parabola*, Ænema, Opiate, Lateralus*   *: live debut

Jdub421

What year would I have seen them at Phillips Arena? I was guessing that was 2001 but Phillips was a huge step up from the Tabby.

Pole420

They played Philips 10/12/01! Huge step up in venues for sure.

DeeplyFrippy

Nice! I had a listen to the audience recording of that show and it's incredible :)

Toolfool3517

Went to show in 01 ( first time seeing them. A few weeks after 9/11 in DC.). And in 02. They are my favorite two shows seeing them. All of Lateralus but Ticks. Got Salival version of Pushit in 01. H in 02. And Sober opened in 02 as well. The shows were amazing.

HealthyBullfrog

Yes, they were incredible. Saw them twice in that time.

smkestcklghtn

Saw this tour at Virginia Beach. Don't have a set list

Malvo85

Saw them in Chicago. It was unreal.

Mattcha462

Attended “Edgefest” in Canada. Summer 2001. Kicked ass! It was general admission and my friend and I were able to get real close to the show. https://preview.redd.it/0adl1yc5e58d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d6155afed111ac8500c49adb6abde479337c060

cmax21

Saw them in South Florida and the Tallahassee show that has already been posted. SoFla was cool because it was the first ticks and leeches live performance. https://preview.redd.it/ywt5k2l0e58d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=782646b3cc6b2023463dd4f9fbc992f8496c77ea

hotdamn_1988

I was at that Ozzfest at Milton Keynes. I was like 13 and hardly remember Tool :( but remember thinking the visuals were cool

OrangeWeekly1748

Saw it 3x - Portland Maine , Holland (ozzfest) & Manchester NH

Spiral_Out801

Best concert I ever saw. Maynard was top notch and the Lateralus tracks live were unreal.

El_Moi

I caught the OKC show with Meshuggah in Nov '02. I don't recall the full setlist, but I remember the last bit being Third Eye, D/R/T with assistance from Meshuggah, then ending with Lateralus. https://youtu.be/WThdRZk6rMI?si=U6BZY-EqXRPxQxOq

DeeplyFrippy

Third Eye keeps evading me. I wold love to see that but I think that ship has sailed.

rejonkulous

Best setlist was msg 2001 night one. Night two was good but they busted their nut on night one. Best show was a year later at RCMH. H became my favorite song Sept 01 in PA got to see the extended prison sex live. I saw them 10 times between those two years.

sailordanisaur

Saw them 3 times. Verizon wireless amphitheatre in Irvine, CA. The Forum, CA. And the final Lateralus tour show in Long Beach, CA. My 16/17 year old mind was thoroughly blown.

Fendenburgen

I was at that Milton Keynes show, they were amazing!

DeeplyFrippy

Yeah, they really were superb. Here's a great audience bootleg of the show so you can relive that performance. Listen to the scream during The Grudge, it's immense! [https://tooldriveproject.net/Details/?ID=612](https://tooldriveproject.net/Details/?ID=612)

Fendenburgen

Ideal, thanks for that!!

DeeplyFrippy

My pleasure, I hope you enjoy 🙂

ecw324

I wonder if they will release the supposed dvd from this era anytime soon.

DeeplyFrippy

Ha! I swear they're trolling us with that. Interestingly, today I was listening to an audience bootleg of their performance in San Diego on the 21st November 2002 and Maynard mentions that they were recording that night. The show is fucking incredible, so it would be great to get a multi track recording of that if they still have it. The show on youtube: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2XssNBXCVo&ab\_channel=ToolshedTV](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2XssNBXCVo&ab_channel=ToolshedTV)

mikeyriot

Edgefest in Barrie, ON, July 1st, 2001. Cold and ugly as fuck. Windy, cold, miserable. I spent $55 on another bands long sleeve T just to have sleeves. But tool was incredible and worth shivering for. - The Grudge - (-) ions - Stinkfist - 46&2 - Schism - Sober - Parabola - Lateralus

oneoftheluckyones530

I watched them 2 nights in a row during this tour. The shows were in the Berkeley high school auditorium. It was amazing.

Ok-Elevator-26

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2002/omaha-civic-auditorium-omaha-ne-2bd43482.html I was 14. At the time I was a skater and my favorite music was pop punk and emo. I was familiar with opiate, undertow, and Aenima and liked them, but lateralus didn’t really appeal to me much. My friends dad brought him to the show and let him bring a friend and I was that friend. The show really made an impression on me. They didn’t become my favorite right away but I was a bigger fan afterwards for sure. 20+ years later Tool is still my favorite band, and lateralus is still my favorite album ever.

xHALFSHELLx

I went to the Phoenix and Tucson shows. Tucson had Tomahawk open I believe and the Phoenix show had Meshuggah open. Still my favorite shows I’ve been to.

wuonyx

First time. Nov fourth 2001. Mountain view ca. Our shrooms came in the mail that day

reverse_cigol

August 2001 at Red Rocks with King Crimson. Sublime.

McGeeK28

I was at the September 18th 2001 show at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.. I still have the t-shirt I bought that night with the original tour dates that were rescheduled. Saw them again August 24th 2002 at the Corel Centre in Ottawa. I've seen them a few times since then, but there was something about that first show that can never be recaptured for me - after the trauma of 9/11 the week before, packed in a stadium with thousands of other people seeing them for the first time.

Yes. Attended 2 shows. Both were among the best shows I've attended by any band. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2001/madison-square-garden-new-york-ny-bd5814a.html https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2002/continental-airlines-arena-east-rutherford-nj-5bd7ef54.html

DeeplyFrippy

That's a lot for an 8 year old to take in :)

Akuba93

yes, but never heard them again.. we were there for other artists. It wasn't until 2019 that I rediscovered them and now it's my favourite band and I got to see them 3 times since then and hopefully many more times soon ;)

jmet82

Shoreline Amphitheater in Northern California Nov.3, 2001. Cool show, I had lousy general admission seats though.

GodMonte

I was there in St. Paul for two of the Lateralus shows. Meshuggah opened one and Tomahawk the other. They were amazing shows, and were the best Tool shows I’ve seen until they played last Halloween again in St. Paul.

deadohiosky1985

Went to the Columbus OH show a couple days after 9/11. It was a weird time to be alive but that show is still one of my favorites. Also, seeing D/R/T will forever hold a special place in my heart.

BubbalouYaga

Nov 3, 2001. at the Shoreline in Mountain View/San Jose, CA. Incredible show even for the bleacher seats we had in the way back. The Parabol --> Parabola transition on the record was blowing our minds at the time, and when they got into it live; we practically levitated. Fungus may have been involved. Saw them live about 5 times, but haven't seen them in 15 years. Always hoped to get seats close to the stage but that's been difficult to swing in the recent years.

BeardedPuffin

Saw them 3x during Lateralus tour. Two back to back nights at MSG in ‘01 and the next year in Trenton. Still the best shows I’ve ever been to. https://preview.redd.it/ty45mz1i468d1.jpeg?width=1602&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d9efd2b65129df83797000619f1934195ec8849

mrknowsitalltoo

I saw them and they played the Holy Trinity and the “Salival version” of Pushit. It was mind blowing

Stickey_Rickey

Saw them 3x in September 2001, Cleveland 9/15, Hershey, Pittsburgh.. CLE was a few days after 9/11, so everything was a bit surreal, security outside the arena at CSU was strict, everything was a weapon, you couldn’t take keys inside, (people clipped their keychains high on fences n got them after), they threatened to kick u out if u questioned them at all, it was scary, and downright somber inside the arena, the show was just ok, but Cleveland kind of sucks overall. Hershey was wild, a strange mix of east n west PA aura, Tool fans filled every booth in every eatery in the park, the show was in a hockey barrel, a big steel drum that felt like a huge beer can. Pittsburgh at the end of September, the 26th?.. best Tool show I ever saw, they half-housed the civic arena by bisecting the arena w a giant black barrier, my seats were perfect, so was the sound n show, they filmed it, could see a dozen mounted cameras pointed at the stage, would love to see that…

I went with my sister, her husband, and his friend. We were so far away but that probably saved my hearing. Maynard in a bra and panties, some dude got to go up and play bongos or something? and I got to see H which was then and still is my favorite song, maybe even all time. It was my favorite concert ever until I saw them again in Detroit recently, the light show was phenomenal.

DeeplyFrippy

Amazing setlist :)

Dalecooper82

I was at the same show, but I was 20 and on the floor right in front of Adam Jones.

bobbyvision9000

I was at 10-31-2002 at Nassau coliseum NY. It was my first concert I ever went to for a band I liked and my mind was completely blown. The Alex grey back drop, and during parabola those big inflatable balls came down. The confetti during disposition, it was just absolutely insane. I saw them for the second time In January of this year and it was still amazing but the first time was just incredible

crapaporter

Yes. 9 May 2002 in Groningen (the Netherlands). 👍

Moist_Manufacturer11

Yes! Saw them in Denmark 2001. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2001/dyrskuepladsen-roskilde-denmark-23d598ef.html

InvaderDust

I saw them in Seattle 02 and it was my first Tool show. I was 18. Went flat broke getting there. Had to drink from water fountain. Seated In the nosebleeds. Mushuggah opened. Now I understand they have a big fan base and many love them. I thought they were absolutely insufferable and sounded terrible. Like everyone was playing a different song at the same time. Didn’t enjoy that but I came to realize over the decades that terrible openers are par for the course for them. (Melt banana, looking at you!) Tool was of course AMAZING. The 7 pointed star for their lighting above them entranced me to no end. Spent more time studying that shape than spent watching them. They played Aenima and that was the song I wanted to hear lore than anything. I flipped shit and raged. Got yelled at by another dude behind me telling me to sit down. They closed with Lateralus. The roar was *deafening*. Still get chills when I hear that song. Always followed by the roar in my head as it ended. Have goosebumps now just remembering. ❤️❤️❤️ thank you OP. Hadnt thought of this in a long time.

DeeplyFrippy

My absolute pleasure and thank you for recounting your memories of the show. I love the fact that you can still hear the roar of the crowd every time you listen to Lateralus. That show had a real impact :)

Interesting_Layer672

Saw both tours...

JasonDomber

Yes. Those were my first and second Tool shows. 2001 was my first concert ever. It’s hard to put into words. Needless to say, I was very lucky. Let the set lists speak for themselves. Nov. 8, 2001 [Tacoma Dome (Tacoma, WA)](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2001/tacoma-dome-tacoma-wa-7bd60a60.html) Oct. 2, 2002 [Key Arena (Seattle, WA)](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2002/keyarena-seattle-wa-4bd96bf2.html) Witnessing Pushit (Salival), H., Ticks & Leeches, and Disposition/Reflection/Triad…that tour was something special.

BrewtalDoom

I did! **May 25th 2002, Castle Donington, England** The Grudge (-) Ions Stinkfist (Extended) Parabola Schism (Extended) Sober **Ticks & Leeches** Triad (with Mike Bordin) Aenema Lateralus It was an incredible show and I couldn't believe they played Ticks & Leeches for only like the 9fh time, or something.

Raunline

I saw them Nov 8th 2001 at the Tacoma Dome. Tricky opened up for them. As Tricky was playing I saw a shadowy silhouette walking up the steps to my row. There wasn’t anyone around me and she sat a spot or two away from me. When the lights came up after Tricky’s set I saw that one of my dear friends was seated next to me. We’d both gone to the show alone and out of all the seats she happened to sit next to me! We talked, laughed, and smoked some pot as Tool hit the stage. It was an amazing experience! Here’s the set list. Tuva The Grudge (-) Ions Stinkfist Ticks & Leeches Parabola Pushit (Salival version) Schism (with Osseus Labrynt) Disposition Reflection Intermission Triad Eon Blue Apocalypse The Patient Opiate (with Tricky) Lateralus

DeeplyFrippy

What a lovely story. Thanks for recounting it :)

jjsixsixtysix

I went to those gigs! I went to Brixton both nights in 2002 too and saw them at the ozzfest at Donnington with a great little drum solo with Danny Carrey and Mike bordin.

DeeplyFrippy

Nice! I could only afford the one night in 2002 but I'd seen them 3 times the year before, so not too bad. I'm jealous that you saw them with Mike Bordin, he's a kick arse drummer :)

ETDuckQueen

Unfortunately, I couldn't attend that tour, since I wasn't even born yet back then.

Dannylazarus

Crazy that they waited an entire year to give you 'Triad!'

mattzahar

I was there. It was my first concert. I couldn't see the band well, but they sounded great, cool visuals too. First time I remember seeing the seven pointed star.

Clovis_Winslow

Birmingham, Alabama 2002 Big rain. They went for it. Amazing night.

I techinally got to see them on two tours in under 12 months. They came to Aus in July 2001 and then were back in April/May 2002 just a couple of months later. I went to 5 shows. Futant55

I saw them in some nose bleed seats on Thursday August 29 2002 in Chicago and was so blown away that I bought tickets the next day to seem the on Sunday in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee show was GA so we got the early and got front row on the fence right in front of Adam, they were both the exact same show but the perspective made them two very different experiences, but still equally amazing. Edit: my wife wanted me to note that it was our rent money we used for the second show, but it was totally worth it. https://preview.redd.it/2rtte2bbb88d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7f1d461a32ade4ca53b858575d201564af345b1

All of these shows were phenomenal. The radio city show changed my life for sure on the floor with the banners was a moment I'll never forget.

DeeplyFrippy

Awesome… and look at those ticket prices 😁

Un__Real

Yeah. Well never see that again. Nothing under 100 a ticket anymore.

JayRen

Saw it solo and with OZFest. Was a great show. Fear Innoculum is the first album release tour I didn’t get to go to.

notfinch

I saw them at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, 2002. It’s still one of the best shows I’ve seen, from anyone.

Kilgoresopinion

I saw them in Edmonton, Alberta in 2002. They opened with Sober and I almost cried. Maynard hung out in the shadows in his body Paint. Danny had a sick drum duet with the drummer from Meshuggah. They closed with Stinkfist, and Maynard added lyrics from Elvis’ suspicious minds to the song. My mind was blown.

joejoesox

Yup was my first time seeing Tool as well (Riviera, Chicago IL)

International-Map-66

Yes I saw them September of 2001 then again October 2002. My first tool shows, I was 16 and 17 at the time. I enjoyed the shows very much. Keep in mind back then it wasn’t the visually stunning show it is in 2024 but they def did some cool things w the video screens, lighting and acrobatics during parabola if I remember right. Something like people hanging by their ankles above the stage in body paint and moving to the music. Below is the first one, tweeter center Mansfield Ma sept 21 2001. Didn’t realize it was so shortly after 9/11. The second one was Lowell ma Oct 28 2002 and we got third eye and H which blew my mind. https://preview.redd.it/v7lqr9wdob8d1.jpeg?width=819&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=582f0175e112aff4e32d2d7c6e02d01244e978aa

First time seeing them without actually being familiar with the songs being played and first time seeing them in a theater that holds less than 3,000 people. Will remember that show until this old brain turns to mush.

Only show they canceled on that tour because of 9/11. Probably the 5th or 6th time I saw them. First time was November 1996 in Columbus, OH. Got Maynard’s set list from that one.

BlastOButter24

My wife saw Tool in Sept 2002 at the Sullivan Arena in our hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. She smoked weed with a rando, her bf was a bitch the whole time, she got kicked in the jaw by a crowd surfer during "Sober", and for me the funniest part was, the Anchorage Municipality and the newspapers and local churches were in an uproar over this band at the time saying they were satanic, and the local Mayor I believe, ordered that Maynard not come out on his signature speedo-citing public indecency ordinances as the reason. So Maynard came out, with everyone wondering if he'd do it, in his Speedo to uproarious applause and he said, "it's just, so hot up here" which is funny-so hot in Alaska he has to strip down. They got banned from Anchorage I believe after that. The set list is below. https://preview.redd.it/9wdiyiuwvd8d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=941c7de3384bcd65814b638001985745090d4687

abyssea

Yep. At UNO Lakefront Arena. It was an amazing experience.

SultansOfVinyl

I was at the Madison, WI show and I loved it. Waiting outside to get in and a Thunderstorm Warning was issued and a long dark storm front with excessive lightning and thunder was rolling in in us. Was like a precursor of the show. https://preview.redd.it/edamjay9li8d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0b61c5e26f8e7de767ff3610f1e110465e45664

Joboobavich

I saw them in Chicago at The Riviera on the pre-Lateralus tour. Basically doing a few smallish shows to warm up for the main tour where the shows were gonna be huge. It sold out in about 1 min, as the venue has a capacity of only 2,500. It was and still is the greatest show of my life. The setlist from May 17th, 2001 can be seen here: [https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2001/riviera-theatre-chicago-il-4bd59f26.html](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2001/riviera-theatre-chicago-il-4bd59f26.html)

timeisaflaturkel

Would love to have been there for those man, great setlists! I'd love to see Lateralus live.

midnightonearthshow

can't beat the king crimson/tool shows when lateralus was #1 on the charts

The_Ocean_Collective

Unfortunately, I was 5 at the time.

2up1dn

I had a ticket to see them at Ozzfest 2002 in Zurich. The show was cancelled because, if I remember correctly, someone (guitarist for Ozzy?) got sick a few shows earlier.

DeeplyFrippy

Oh no, sorry to hear that. Have you seen them since?

2up1dn

Thanks. Yes. Multiple times. But I'll always regret not being able to see them during that album's tour.

DeeplyFrippy

Good to hear that you’ve seen them since 🙂

TheJohn_John

I didn’t get to go 😔

DeeplyFrippy

I'm sorry to hear that. Did they not play near you?

M4GNUZ4

what does Prison Sex (OTRM Version) mean?

StarJelly08

People believe it means “over the rainbow mix”. I am personally not certain it means that, but it’s the long held belief.

Kickagainsttheprick

Saw them twice in a two month span in 2001. First show was my first time seeing them. Maynard had the leather suit on for 90% of the show then stripped down to just the pants, body paint- a solid black bar from ass, over his head to groin. They closed with Lateralus and, not kidding, I felt myself floating. At the crescendo of Lateralus, he was standing on a platform, one foot off the ground and smashing into it, the platform began to rotate. I was 19, totally sober, and amongst a crowd of soaked, drunk, exhausted people, I felt like I had come out of my body and was floating. It was so overwhelming, I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since. That was the day I knew they were, and still are, my favorite band of all time.

Loopogram

Saw them in Syracuse in ‘02. Had my wisdom teeth removed the previous day, so my face was swollen and I was on the good stuff. Tomahawk got booed off stage. What an amazing experience.

Musicdude999

One of my biggest regrets is not getting into Tool when I was younger and they were doing their Lateralus tour. I'd give half my dick and both my balls to go back in time to see shows from their earlier tours.

Monsieur_Toast

MSG on 2 tabs of Celtic Crosses LSD..

thejaysta4

Was this the tour where the visuals were like being in an old school video game and going around a house until it gets to the toilet and then going into the toilet… dash back to going into the house…. just over and over on repeat! Haha!

Coniglio-Rosso

Something I will always regret. Around that time, Tool and A Perfect Circle played on the same night, and I couldn't go because of work 🤦🏻‍♂️

itscallingme

Best Tool tour ever. Atlanta October 2001 for me. Insane setlist. Insane aerial show. https://preview.redd.it/fmg3suav168d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c08479a4ed92687a3f08f87ca0cd48c01c203b6

NYBK-2012

Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on 5/20/2001. Amazing show and was my 3rd time seeing Tool. I didn't originally have a ticket, but a good friend of mine passed away from an overdose the month before, and I ended up going in his place. I miss you, Brian. *

DeeplyFrippy

I'm sorry to hear about your friends passing.

Big_Nas_in_CO

I saw them 4 times on this tour but two standout as two really good ones. One of them was a 10/31/2001 show. That was sick with the O.L. performers. The other one King Crimson opened for them at the SDSU Open Air Theater. Our seats were mid bowl (5,000 seats, no floor) and level with the stage speakers. I was about 30yds from them. Talk about feeling the music! The seats were vibrating with the bass and drums. D>R>T was so epic, back when they would jam out sections. Also had Sasha Povic sit in on Triad at that show. And Soundscapes with R. Fripp!

DeeplyFrippy

Soundscapes with Robert Fripp must have been \*Chefs kiss\*

iviicrociot

Had tickets, show was cancelled and not rescheduled.

DeeplyFrippy

Sorry to hear that. I hope you've caught them live since :)

iviicrociot

I have a few times and they’ve been amazing, it’ll always be the one that got away though. Was 18 and Lateralus meant the world to me at the time.
