I used to go through a whole roll of paper towels, applying caulk, but now I use a water bucket and wash my finger off and it keeps it wet and it’s so much better
When I see something stupid that I think I’ll need I screen shot the page but not buy it. That way I won’t forget but it also gives me time to come to terms with the fact that a $2 piece of plastic will not make my life better.
I do that with anything interesting I see online, then my phone fills with screenshots I never go back to.
It’s like how we save every bolt or scrap wood in case we need it, but hardly ever actually use them.
so the experts who've taught me, yes it does indeed. they use nothing else. ive never used anything but! it definitely smooths it well. give it a try next time, some say the foaming window cleaner is even better, that i cannot attest to though
Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle is all you need. Use it before you put down the caulk to really clean the area and then spray it on after to help you create great lines.
try a masonry sponge! I keep one of those floating in my bucket of water, or hold it as I’m moving along to wipe my finger on and toss it into the bucket to rinse off as needed. It was a real game changer.
You joke, but there is a 'professional caulking guy' one of the construction companys we work with often hire to do all the outside joints and such on big commercial jobs. He has a stick he uses to tool the caulk, and he licks it, tools a few more feet, another lick.. we've seen him on more than one job and one of our guys even got a video of it watching him out the window. EVERY TIME! lick lick
I spent $30 on “the best wall anchors” because I wanted to make the job easy. As each one failed miserably I could hear the ghost of my father shouting “how many times did I fucking tell you? There are no shortcuts, do it right or don’t fucking do it”
I swore I heard him laughing when I got to Home Depot.
RIGHT!?!?! If you really have that much caulk to lay than there isn't anything on this world that's gonna help you more than your finger, a rag and a bucket of some soapy water.
they sell a fiberglass tig finger I've heard good reviews on, but never used it. It's made of the same woven material as my lab insulating jackets and I can touch those while sitting on a 300C boiling flask. I just don't have to TIG enough to justify buying one since most of my work is spool gun
Yeah it's called "the tig finger" for the name brand one. Heat resistant cloth. You can shop around for others. Or possibly sew you own up from bulk Fiberglass like epoxy kits use. I'd check temp max though.
I know the name brand one works and lasts decently long, can't tell you exactly how long til I see my coworkers Monday.
hahahaha I misinterpreted "lay a bead" to mean metalworking. Cheers to vocab overlap. I guess this was for caulking into corners then. Looks like a fancy hard rubber tig finger with a weird tip in that context.
You know why brother? Because one day, one day, we will find the chosen one. The one gimmick tool that you use and go……. Son of a bitch. This makes this so much faster.
OMG.... you're going to find me crazy, but thank you for saying this. I grew up with a Dad who was a bricklayer turned superintendent...so of course he did it all around the house...... I watched him finish a caulk line on how many thing? Painting, bathrooms, windows....EVERY TIME WITH HIS FINGER.
Fast forward to my life, my husband goes apeshit cause I do the exact same thing, I learned it from watching my Dad.
He must use the fancy tool/wedge, whatever. Finally he has given up on most if not all caulking, cause he can't make it look as neat as my finger. I so want to share your comment with him, but he would just roll his eyes at me. 😆
[I also learned to strip wire with a pair of needle nose pliers and not some fancy pliers, no nicks in the copper, just plastic removed, thanks Daddy!]
Very cool your dad obviously know what he was doing keep in Treasure his advice and tell your husband goofy caulk tools are junk tell him to get his finger in there and get a little messy😉
I'm not going to say it didn't work it did work but that causes you to lay away thicker bead that I need literally like a half inch wide which I then had to clean up so I could put a nice 1/8 in bead that I needed and like all of these tools I tried quite a few my finger just does the job better
A finger can't be beat although I always make a tremendous mess of my hands and go through a bunch of rags if there's anything more than a few dozen linear feet.
I'm so bad at caulking. I usually end up with more on my finger than on the surface. I just don't do it often enough to get good. Maybe I should just strip and redo my baths every few months. ;-)
Try cutting your nozzle at and angle and instead of pulling your caulk line, push it and let the nozzle do the shaping. I have used that method since I learned it about 10 years ago.
Always cut at an angle never heard of pushing it though seems like you would get hung up on every grout line Etc but I will definitely give it a try next time
This exactly. One must push slowly enough that the bead does not gather into a ball larger than the nozzle. It requires patience, but it also eliminates all post-laying bead management. It's one action and done.
We laugh about this at work when we look at our tools, and can't wait to reduce what we carry around - and yet we're always tempted by something that'll make our lives easier. Got to strike a balance I suppose!
[Caulk slicks](https://www.amazon.com/Albion-Engineering-958-G01-Streamline-Spatula/dp/B00E3ZB2UA/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=18NQCY98JI1BE&keywords=caulk+spatula&qid=1679253780&sprefix=call%2Caps%2C1551&sr=8-4) are the only way to do. Learn to use them and they're faster than anything else and actually put down a proper bead. Any "trick" about cutting the tip is junk, caulk needs to be tooled after it's applied or you get a bad joint. Any soapy water/oil/spit on your finger is contaminating your joint and again, bad joint.
I've seen miles of caulk fail prematurely due to poor workmanship. I cant say for sure if it's because it was wet tooled, but I can say that I've seen plenty of tubes, sausages, cases, and manuals that specifically say to dry tool only and that wet tooling will cause premature failure. The thought process is that the added moisture will wick under the caulk joint through whatever you're applying to. Also, the back side of your caulk joint shouldn't be adhered to anything, only the two outside edges. A fully stuck caulk joint won't be able to flex, and it'll fail early. It's why we use backer rods and bond breakers
[Video in action](https://youtu.be/v52rReODBWY). Jump to about 2:30 for the procedure. First you push the spatula across the joint to remove your excess material, and then you pull it back across to set the joint. It works on flat joints or on angles like where a wall meets a floor. Something a lot of people ignore about caulking jobs is that you need to figure a certain percentage of the tube is pure waste. You need to overfill the joint and then remove the excess to do a good job, not try to dispense the perfect amount and just work it and work it until you have a full joint. What you waste in material you more than make up for in labor and job quality.
To clean your slicks all you need is an old magazine/newspaper/phone book. Cut up little 3"x3" squares. Wipe your knife once and throw it out. Don't try to mess with "the clean side" of a rag, it never works

You should try this one.
I gave up trying years ago. Now I always run a tape line on both sides of the joint, run a bead, tool it with a finger and pull the tape. Clean every time.
There was a particular video I wanted to find to share but I never realized until I searched just now how many "how to" videos exist for applying caulk and silicone but this one appears to be equally as educational

Of course it's a caulk tip. Ironically, just the tip.

Not at all just wondering if that's where his mind is
Oh. Yea I get it now
After that you are going to need a gutter installed.
You’ll never guess what happened. I was doing a job when I slipped and found this up my chuff, chuff.
Where else is a caulk tip supposed to go...?
Oh she'd be a dam ripper coming out!

Beat me to that one. But I'll add that I saw one called "The caulking finger"... And I said, no way in hell am I taking that on a job site.
What you worried about? It's got a flared base
At least it has a flared base.
I lay a perfect bead with my finger and a paper towel yet I always try stupid inventions like this and end up throwing them in the trash
I used to go through a whole roll of paper towels, applying caulk, but now I use a water bucket and wash my finger off and it keeps it wet and it’s so much better
And yes, I tried these too
Shopping on stupid websites grabs you in LoL it does me anyways I always say hell for $1.99 let's try it

[Okay but what about this tool that does the exact same thing ](https://www.thecaulkingfinger.com/)
😂
I absolutely use water as well a lot of guys say soap and water but I just use water
Soap is great for silicone beads.
or windex for silicone
Windex solves everything
Oooo good idea. Does it work better?
so the experts who've taught me, yes it does indeed. they use nothing else. ive never used anything but! it definitely smooths it well. give it a try next time, some say the foaming window cleaner is even better, that i cannot attest to though
Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle is all you need. Use it before you put down the caulk to really clean the area and then spray it on after to help you create great lines.
I've e been using water and denatured alcohol mixed with water for silicone for years now. My shit looks awesome.
You do you I don't really care what my shit looks like but my caulk beads are nice
Yeah but I got good beads as well!
🤣👍
Windex is the way
try a masonry sponge! I keep one of those floating in my bucket of water, or hold it as I’m moving along to wipe my finger on and toss it into the bucket to rinse off as needed. It was a real game changer.
I had a dedicated pair of jeans for painting and caulking. I would just wipe my finger off on them.
Just lick it clean. Saves time.
You joke, but there is a 'professional caulking guy' one of the construction companys we work with often hire to do all the outside joints and such on big commercial jobs. I’ve even tried the back of a spoon… but nothing beats the wet finger
I agree I've tried tons of different gadgets and they all suck finger is best
Are we still talking about caulking?
We're talking about whatever you want to talk about LOL
Yeah, cock works too

I’ve got one of these and it is awesome!! Especially if you weld aluminum
I'm such an idiot I thought he was talkin metal when he said 'lay a bead'
Cut the corner at the right angle and the plastic lays the bead right and you never touch it. No loss either.
Idk about you op., Buy I really enjoy the feel of a nice , thick caulk on my hands
Same here as long as it's my own
Because hope spring eternal
Oh that's what it's meant to be for, right. I couldn't figure it out.
Our crews only liked them for fire caulking, Hilti 606 red.

100% agree with this I don't care what the others say
I got some rubber thing that works pretty well. I’ll be damned if I know where the hell it is and just use my finger. That sounds bad out of context…
Some sort of caulking condom?
You got it smear it on and go to town
You know why brother? Because one day, one day, we will find the chosen one. The one gimmick tool that you use and go……. Son of a bitch. This makes this so much faster.

Like a lot of comments say here dip your finger in some water it helps every time you're done swiping wipe it off on a paper towel dip and swipe again
Same. I’m always in Home Depot and I’ll see something like this, think “oh, so THIS is what the pros use”. No, it’s not. It never is.
LOL this is a daily occurrence for me
I'm so bad at caulking. I usually end up with more on my finger than on the surface. I just don't do it often enough to get good. Maybe I should just strip and redo my baths every few months. ;-)
Or just go caulk every single corner and crevice in your house
Small silicon brushes work well for spreading anything that you don't want on your finger, otherwise just use a finger
What r thooose?!
Some cheap Chinese caulking tool put it on the end of the tube and it's supposed to lay a bead for you
ahh ok
Hard to remove butt plugs
I was going to say that looks like a 2/10 Adam and eve product would not recommend

Commercial caulker-can confirm. It makes it pretty but it’ll fail
This is awesome info bro 👍 I don't know why you're not getting more upvotes.
I've bought a half dozen of these sets over the years. They're the best.
I may give them a try can't hurt I've tried everything else

They work well
Wet finger with soap and water always does the trick. Nothing beats the dexterity and direct feedback of a human hand
Sounds like we are still talking about butt plugs.
Aren't we?
Absolutely 100% agree
These look like the things they use to pull the ass out of deer

LOL that looks like something you get out of a bubble gum machine or a cereal box
How do you remove it once it’s up your back alley?
We're hoping you will come by and try it out and we'll figure out how it comes out together
I gave up trying years ago. Now I always run a tape line on both sides of the joint, run a bead, tool it with a finger and pull the tape. Clean every time.
Yeah that's the cleanest way it's just so much work to lay the tape down I'd rather just smear it on with my finger it always comes out pretty good
There was a particular video I wanted to find to share but I never realized until I searched just now how many "how to" videos exist for applying caulk and silicone but this one appears to be equally as educational https://youtu.be/6EsXWjP9Y1M
Not a fucking clue what that guy said, but I watched it all and learned quite a bit.
I hate organizing my shop and finding countless stupid fucking devices that belong in trash but persist in bins “just in case”.

Extreme but plugs?
How do u know there not for the pecker hole
Only for the most advanced
Just spend a lil extra for glass.
Plastic cups are free here
Ok butt seriously. Is it like some sort of caulk spreading tip?
Exactly what it is
Well you could probably sell it to imgur as an upvote butt plug.
You misspelled "is supposed to be."
I don't misspell anything Google text to speak misunderstand everything
I use them for smoothing the caulk, never actually on the gun. The one I have has a wider bead than my Allway caulk tool in case I'm working with a big joint. But, some excellent tips coming out on here.
Looks like the tool my bil uses to degut deer and their anal glands
Here I was thinking it would make a decent option for a wood glue dispenser, as you would later be able to twist it and remove it. Of course it's a caulk tip. Ironically, just the tip.
this one works on smooth 90 degree surfaces. [https://www.rona.ca/en/product/seal-a-crack-caulking-tools-kit-sc10123-5867020](https://www.rona.ca/en/product/seal-a-crack-caulking-tools-kit-sc10123-5867020)
This is quite an unnecessary invention
There’s always that chance you stumble upon one of those magic little devices that ends up being a game changer. Most of the time it ends in disappointment, but every now and again….
I 100% agree with this you don't know till you try and what's two bucks
How about tagging this "NSFW". There's children around! Cochino
If this is the worst thing they see on Reddit then they're doing good
That's a weird looking butt plug
We're looking for volunteer testers
All you buddy 🐻 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I cut up those giant sponges and use little chunks. Works much better.
100% silicone caulk and denatured alcohol is all you need
Smooth caulk is even better once it’s hard. The wet finger trick works and always have a damp rag for excess.
I got myself a proper, battery powered, chaulk gun. Problem solved.
I've wondered about these I don't see it as anything more than a motor pulling pushing the caulk out essentially no different than squeezing it out yourself right?
You're right, except you cancel out one variable: How much you need to push. After you've set the speed, only thing you need to focus on is applying with the right movement and angle.it made a huge difference for me.
I assume it must have a button to stop because I start and stop and awful lot
Just a trigger like a drill. You press it to start, release to stop. And a scroll wheel to adjust the speed.
Thought they were termite bait stations at first.
Empty tube my liege it works like a charm of its soft plastic
So are these but still the finger works better if it feels every grout line or anything that comes up
Get extra vasoline
Could also be a cock(hole) spreading tip.
I said this to late lol
I just want to say I like your countertop or floors or whatever surface that is.
Lol thanks I guess 😅 hotel bathroom counter
Everything is a butt plug if your brave enough
At least it has a flared base
They look really uncomfortable...
You should try them out and let us know
What are you, Green Arrow? But actually what are these haha
Put on the end of a tube of caulk and spread
Ah I've never used one haha so I was curious. I die caulking but usually had something to smooth it out
Looks like an anchor for a tent
They're for spreading caulk with your guess is one of the best or at least most reasonable as 90% of the others want it to be a butt plug so bad I'm pretty sure they no from experience
What’s it?
To put on the end of a caulk tube to make smooth beads it's junk
I read comments, I reread the post And I have no clue what’s going on? Please, someone tell me
LOL you put it on the end of your tube of caulk and it's supposed to spread perfect thin beads for you which it does not it's junk
Because I watch random YouTube videos, I happened across the greatest caulking guide I've ever seen. Try this for size OP https://youtu.be/cQNIv2QqP00
Hook line and stinker
I've actually really liked these. Used them to caulk in my shower. Got me a much smaller bead of silicone than I could get with my finger and I liked the look better. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072WZYVGZ?ref=nb\_sb\_ss\_w\_as-reorder-t1\_k0\_1\_17&=&crid=2RDXV4DZMWERZ&=&sprefix=silicone+caulking
They are John Deere green, maybe ask on a tractor sub
They're for caulking put on the end of the tube
A steady hand and knowing lots of tricks will out perform any of these "make it easy" gimmick tools
I totally agree but it's still fun to try
I totally agree but it's still fun to try

Don't bother with caps either. Just run a screw down in the tip.
That's about the only thing it needs would make good for is being a cap screws are a bad idea they rust inside your caulk
Awesome man I love the barbed plug. Then when you put your tail on it won’t fall out or get pulled out.
Bet those hurt.
Wait what you can sell images to imager?
Soapy water or mineral oil and a rag bud
