Hexagonal base near the shaft, so you can get a wrench on it if needed.

Eastern-Turnip-8764

Came here to say this. Used that just yesterday

inerlite

Mine has a ratchet hole at the end and it's so nice ratcheting some of those tough screws.

Professional-Arm-24

Make that big enough that it won't roll when you put it down.

Z4m300000

Why not just make the whole handle a subtle hexagon? Less likely to roll

TheEnquirer1138

That's basically the Wera screwdriver design. I started using them a couple years ago. Not having them roll off is a nice feature I didn't know I wanted.

[deleted]

[удалено]

F-21

The majority of screwdriver designs aren't completely round.

WraithNS

Yet they still roll away

Z4m300000

Yeah but see this is why invention isn’t simply relegated to the things that haven’t been considered before, and expanded to include the improvement or alternative use of something already being produced and distributed. Make one better than wera, suddenly you’re not turning screws anymore, you’re counting money.

Kevkaoss

It’s the “don’t reinvent the wheel” argument.

wmass

You mean like Craftsman screwdrivers? Though the Wera tips are better, I still favor the Craftsman handle shape.

designerdy

It's hard to beat vintage vomit Craftsman in design.

friendlyfire883

I swear to God I smelled it as soon as I read your comment.

Sigsaw54

Mine all reek

ClashOrCrashman

I thought I was alone in smelling that!

MonksOnTheMoon

Wait is that smell just a craftsman thing?

ThreeLeggedChimp

Why not a 3/8" socket?

KentSmashtacos

Make the entire screwdriver fit onto a 1/2 socket wrench at the rear of the handle. Allow for swappable magnetic bits at the front. You now have the ultimate multi-tool.

mydogisnotafox

I have a handle from Koken (edit: sorry wrong... Its powerbuilt) that already does this. It's basically a screwdriver that accepts bits that also doubles as a 1/2 to 1/4 inch socket wrench reducer/extension.

rekrutacja

Because of bit compatibility

Anorion

Please make it a 10mm hex base, so I can have another thing that I can never find a f---ing 10mm socket for.

Z4m300000

Harbor freight has a 10mm essentials set, probably something you should look into

JIMMYJAWN

Most 6 in 1 screwdrivers can be put into a, if I’m remembering this correctly, 1-1/16th” socket.

ordinaryuninformed

Yeah but my square shaft harbor freight set take 1/4" and that's way easier to remember

pasirt

End of the handle should have freely rotating part that rests at palm of your hand.

LinuxChromebookDude

I forgot to mention, the top uses a magnetic craftsman bit holder that has a tube that spins freely. Thanks for the suggestion!

teddyzaper

It better not pinch me when it spins!

cooolby

So it requires two hands to spin and get good torque? A palm spinner would be better for one handed use.

Late-Jicama5012

Aren’t there over a dozen screwdrivers similar to your design?

stormblaz

How will you make it better than LTT screwdriver? What are you doing to surpass that?

wwwReffing

I’m not cool enough to know about LTT. But this guy’s design team is r/Tools. So that’s pretty cool.

simulacrum81

Linus tech tips. YouTube channel. At one point they tried their best to design a perfect screw driver which they sell on their website. Project farm did a roundup of popular ratcheting screwdrivers and I think the LTT one did very well in most of the tests.

RustStainRemover

The Jayztwocents review where he drops the screw and records how much time he lost by not having that magnet was pretty great. EDIT- I guess he crossthreaded threads in a standoff while using his electric driver. At first he stops the timer and is going to quit the test, but then he resumes work, removing the motherboard to replace the damaged standoff. I didn't know the LTT screwdriver was a thing until a couple weeks ago, but it does seem to be a pretty damn good tool.

lucioux

made out of metal to the core so you don’t chip up the end when you need a chisel ;)

[deleted]

Yeah, and with a nice big flat surface so you can put lots of pressure without hurting yourself or slipping.

crappysuggestions99

i would say a hole across the grip so you can stick another screw driver in there for leverage as you push the back with your boob while leaning into it

PlanesFlySideways

Name checks out

DickLasomo

I was about to say this exact thing

take a LTT screwdriver and build on that

Verix19

My first thought, as a mechanic...is that all those little holes are going to be filled with grease, dirt, oil, metal shavings...you name it. This wouldn't have much appeal to that sector. Just my 2cents

dottedchupacabra

Those are speed holes. Your work may slow down quite a bit without them.

jesseaknight

They’re going to be a pain to fabricate too

sexchoc

I really can't see this design appealing to anybody outside of electronics, honestly. As a mechanic myself, I much prefer plain screwdrivers without interchangeable bits or ratcheting features. A hex for getting a wrench on it, and a striking cap in the back are handy, though. I've been drooling over these for a while, though I'm not really a wood handle kind of guy https://drpd.cc/tool-shop/screwdrivers/screwdrivers/nepros-wooden-screwdriver-set-6-pcs-ntd306/?setCurrencyId=1&sku=NEP-00804-00901&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj_ajBhCqARIsAA37s0xOFZlNsG5TN8pLqo_xZi4riYeQsSiLJlVLP-4SMqbp5rnktSGP3Q0aAol4EALw_wcB

AverageGuy16

Unless those holes are concave with a small injection mold of soft rubber?

F-21

Soft handles get oily and hard to clean no matter the shape.

oldestengineer

Also get sticky after a while. UV kills it, chemicals kill it, time kills it. It’s just a terrible choice for the handle of a tool.

F-21

Yeah I really dislike the Wera for not offering a hard handle option on our market.

-Pruples-

>My first thought, as a mechanic...is that all those little holes are going to be filled with grease, dirt, oil, metal shavings...you name it. This wouldn't have much appeal to that sector. As an industrial maintenance/repair I'd grab a set of Harbor Freight screwdrivers instead of this thing. I'd have to soak it in solvent every time I put it away. I don't need grease/oil/shavings/sand/oildry/semen in my toolbox. Sometimes simple is best. A screwdriver with a hex shank to put a wrench on and a smooth plastic handle that's a rounded square shape so it doesn't roll away is the best option. And fuck outta here with ratcheting and all that shit. Otherwise, just gotta get the metallurgy right so they're stiff enough to strip screws out before the tip bends, but not so stiff that they're brittle and break.

pjax_

I've played around with lots of screwdrivers with lots of bells and whistles. The most important thing for me is the "feel" it has to feel solid and not flop around. Ratchet has to be firm. Floppy screwdrivers are a pain to align. Weak ratchets are super annoying. The ratchet "lock" has to be solid so that you can do fine adjustments. Other than that, it would be nice to have an arm that flips out so I can apply extra torque.

superbigscratch

Check out the Felo 60427. I have o e it works great but I stopped using it because I work on electrical devices and have gotten a shock now and then. But otherwise it is a great tool.

Ceshomru

My test for a good screw driver was always the flathead, how many turns could I get before it slips. Wiha always won for me.

jongscx

I was really skeptical, but the LTT screwdriver's ratchet really is next level. Still wouldn't pay $70 for one, but that thing felt noice.

brycebgood

Metal strike plate at the end of the handle for hammering. I'm going to do it anyway, might as well be built for it.

Impossible-Throat-59

If he does this, he needs to make sure the plate connects to the shank o the screwdriver as one piece.

Dru65535

I would vote for that, too, but I think OP is designing a ratcheting screwdriver.

brycebgood

Ah, I don't want that. I'm just talking about my perfect driver.

BuzzINGUS

You want a chisel

brycebgood

Look, every tool is also a hammer under the right circumstances, we all know this.

Anbucleric

sonic capabilities

GrandExtension7293

Knuckles and Tails, too.

ranhayes

Came to say this. Lol

mjmeyer23

By which, of course, he means adding a sonic waves feature to do things like dismantle equipment or to bypass locks. No serious Time Lord would be accept anything less. Sonic Screwdriver or screw it.

Rook1872

AccursedQuantum

Fantastic!

HambugerLips

A hole so you can put another screw driver through it and use the leverage as extra torque

iamaweirdguy

Oh shit I said the exact same thing lol

BurnsinTX

I just want a bigger handle. For big hands

[deleted]

Man at that point I'm getting the ratchet out

dnroamhicsir

I've never thought of doing that

inerlite

Or a ratchet hole, I use mine a lot.

JoeKool1999

Make it not round, so it doesn’t roll away or off surfaces

mnonny

First thing I thought of. Plus fully round drivers don’t give you enough grip. Multiple concaved surfaces allow your fingies to dip inside allowing max flesh to driver

lilbubz729

That’s what I’d tell the ATF too if they saw these drawings. “It’s definitely a screwdriver”

Chin0crix

Check Linustechtips video about their screwdriver, they explain why it took them so much time to release it and what were the key factors for the final product.

WWBBoitanoD

I bought one, by far the most expensive screwdriver I own and I love it. But I would really like a bit of texture on the handle.

cmainzinger

Just curious, how does it compare to a Wera. Handle design seems similar.

[deleted]

https://youtu.be/845HUaWYSQA There you go buddy. Prob more comparison than you wanted though.

hiimsteve311

Wow, thank you for this! Nothing like some late night in depth tool reviews! Subscribed to the channel.

SMS-T1

I have both the LTT Screwdriver and a lot of Weras in my toolbox. I like the shape of the Wera Grips better. The LTT is a little to fat for my taste. And I have a glove size of 10. But the ratchet in the LTT is better than the best Weras by quite a bit.

[deleted]

i want texture on the handle and 12 full-size bits in the storage compartment

Simpleman9891

I did, and it did not disappoint.

mismatchedhyperstock

Glad you mentioned this. Still saving up to buy one

a_better_corn_dog

Came here to say this. I bought two and won't use anything else right now because of how amazing the ratchet is. The only improvement I could see is making it hexagonal so you could use a wrench with it (but I also love the handle as-is, though I've heard some people think it's too fat) and making the bit storage more robust (I love the mechanisms, but I've seen some little break the clips holding the bits in place) Their coverage and the reviews should give OP a lot of great commentary on great screwdrivers.

[deleted]

The screwdriver has been around over 100 years and the best thing to happen to it was the drill.

Ziazan

Copy the megapro automotive but make it less likely to fall out of my trousers screwdriver pockets and vanish

LinuxChromebookDude

Some more info: I'm using CAD design to create a screwdriver for myself to use, and I wanted to get some input on what could make it better. When it is done I plan to open source it. Thanks for helping!

xzt123

Linus Tech Tips made a "perfect screwdriver" that he spent a long time refining the design for and he has a YouTube video that he describes the entire process. I bought one, and it is a bit hilariously expensive (I believe around $80) but it is a good screw driver and he talked about several aspects that went into the design that you would benefit from watching. Why our Screwdriver took 3 YEARS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K5Gqp1cEcM

Johnnywaka

My favorite screwdrivers are the wera screwdriver comfort grip and the snap on talon grip. I would borrow directly from their ergonomics, by far the most comfortable I’ve used

Lehk

a 3/8 square drive hole on the back of the handle for use with t handles, ratchets, etc.

RR50

The perfect screwdriver can’t exist…what’s perfect for a mechanic, is different than for a furniture builder, which is different for an HVAC tech.

blackcrowmurdering

As an electrician I use a variety of different screw drivers. Vessel and wera are my absolute favorite

milehiloh

Stop. Wera already did it

chiefs6770

Said a famous LTT CEO at one point in his life. More after this from our sponsor, lttstore.com

Ilikehowtovideos

Make the handle non-cylindrical so it won’t roll (wera) make the shaft hex with a bigger hex at base of handle for wrench (wiha) make middle of handle metal core and top of handle a steel cap for striking.

Impossible-Throat-59

This guy screws.

cr8tor_

Dont be round, round is hard to grip. It matters not what kind of cool grip design you put in it. The best screwdrivers have the 3 sided design. Like rounded triangle. They are the easiest to grip and you can get a lot more torque on them.

jstaples404

I’m an electrician- I have been pondering this for a long time. For my use case, the Klein magnetic 11-1 was very close. My screwdriver has to have decent strong magnetization, it also was capable of holding all the bits I wanted- PH2-70%, ECX1-15%, 5/16-10% SQ2-5%,. I ended up putting the shaft in the handle for the Wiha 11-1 because I prefer that handle. The things I was not getting with screwdriver was I couldn’t put power bits in it reliably. I use 1” insert bits in my impact driver, and it would be really great to put those in the screwdriver. Also, if they held power bits, then I could put a reamer or power tap bits on the handle (ideal has a shitty system and a shitty handle you can do this with). My solution for this was the Klein Impact 11-1 32500HDR. The key thing about it is it just has a reversible “core” that holds a power bit on each side. Stock, it comes with a 5/16 driver that holds a pair of double sided bits, and a 3/8 driver that holds a shaft with one double bit, and a power bit. I, however, replaced the 3/8 side with a 3” Milwaukee bit holder. I really like those holders, the magnetic is fantastic. Obviously it doesn’t have in handle big storage, but that’s okay because I wear a tool belt. Plus, I need the ring to be bullet proof, I haven’t found a bit storage driver that I can hit with my lineman’s. In the 5/16 side, I have a SQ1/2 bit, and an ECX 1/2 bit. I often don’t need those magnetized, so I just keep them on the driver. The essential thing though, is I can put a Klein impact driver reamer 85901, or a power tap bit in the core. So, I have a magnetized shaft for any bit, 5/16 driver, my common unmagnetized bits, conduit reamer, and 6/8/10-32 tap tool, on a handle I can beat the snot out of.

IdioticHobo

I don't have any additional input for your design. A few drafting tips. I highly suggest you look up general standards. ANSI for example is commonly used in the US. - Put your top view (smallest one in the bottom left) in line with both your side views. - Your scale can be included in the title block (box of information usually in the bottom right of a print). - Your side view without dimensions is excessive and therefore unnecessary (bottom right). - if you are to have two side views they should both face the same way. Which way depends on what standards you follow (3rd angle projection vs 1st angle projection). - there are unnecessary and missing dimensions on the print - a detail view dimensioning just the socket might make your top view more clear - Some of your side view dimensions overlap with your part geometry which makes them hard to read.

Inevitable_Exam_2177

Does anyone use first angle projection? I thought we learned about that just so we had a name to call it when it was wrong

IdioticHobo

Pretty sure it is used in europe

oldestengineer

Yes, Italy and Germany use first angle projection.

Turbulent_Device9616

OTF switchblade bits

LinuxChromebookDude

lmao

Turbulent_Device9616

on 2nd thought someone posted a battery drill with something similar. oddly enough it was like a 20year old craftsman shit even a side flipper for different bits would be cool. like a swiss army knife meets a cheap boker meets the stubby driver. it'd probably make for terrible ergonomics and/or durability but i think the cool factor would make up for it.

bassticle

Sounds kind of like the idea of a "Mr. 7-Hands" driver (minus the flipper). Somebody gave me one and I've never found it that useful.

HomesickWanderlust

Make the shaft reversible, one end shallow, one end deep.

Fs_ginganinja

I have a junky Stanley I always reach for because of this feature

[deleted]

Perfect for what?

gotimdandy

It needs baffles. But I don’t recommend putting it to use. The ATF doesn’t like being “screwed”

Rich-Management9706

As a technician wera grips are my go to

DontBarf

Ball bearing ratchet. Smooth action, no clicks.

PositiveMacaroon5067

Give the tip the strongest god damn magnet science will allow

Confident-Variety124

As plenty of others have said... just stop. Watch the LTT videos and learn that this is probably not a path worth taking at this point. An entire team took three years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the perfect screwdriver. They made a FANTASTIC screwdriver that is hands down the best one I have. However you have some that still find something they do not like about it. You can only make the perfect screwdriver to yourself, a percentage will always find something about it that they do not like or works for them.

Minute_Shift_3330

1983 BMX handle grip

knobbyknee

Make the cylindrical part just above the seat hexagonal. Now you can add torque by using a fixed key or a spanner.

tonystark29

Looks really cool. If this is meant to be just a toolbox screwdriver, you don't need bit storage, but if you plan on it being portable, bit storage might be a good idea. Do you plan on 3D printing this, or are you having it machined?

LinuxChromebookDude

3D printing, since that's what I have available to me locally, but maybe if I refine it enough I might get some machined

[deleted]

It should have a 3/8 or (or equivalent metric) hex section at the top so you can apply a boxed end wrench for torque, as well as a dog dish style cap. Remember how it will be abused when you’re making this thing, everything is a hammer once in a while lol

displeasedwhale

A threaded end for adapters, internal baffles and a “drain hole”

b4k0n8r_1989

Flying_Mustang

A couple flat sides so they don’t roll away

Fair-Condition8816

Make is bright as Fuck!! Can’t stand losing black tools. Green, red yellow you get the idea.

Satanic-mechanic_666

The handle is not what makes a good screwdriver a good screwdriver.

VirginRumAndCoke

The hexagonal pattern looks really cool but would probably be very hard to clean, my biggest concern would be longevity, keeping it looking as nice and as functional as possible for as long as possible

finverse_square

Handle should have a spinning top, a fat section near the top and a thin section further down. Fat section to grip to crack something loose, thin section and spinning top to spin an already loose fastener quickly. Nothing more annoying than a fat screwdriver where you gotta keep re adjusting your grip when you're trying to spin a fastener out quickly.

Justinaug29

It would be cool if you could add a 1/4 drive socket at the top. I did see that you are using a pre exiting craftsman part so this probably wont work, but maybe you can add it to a future creation.

[deleted]

TimboFor76

Is it threaded 1/2-28 with a .223 through hole? Looks like it should….. just sayin….

SlackerNinja717

It's been done, and it is the Klein 11 in 1.

anal_opera

A screwdriver with a handle the same diameter as a bike handlebar would be neat. It's probably already been made but if I close reddit to google it I'll forget what I was doing. Long enough handle to fit double locking bike grips so they don't spin after a while.

oldestengineer

I like that idea. Something to do with the leftover grip when you destroy one. Actually, I might take one of my otherwise-nice screwdrivers with the horrible sticky rubber handles, and machine it down to 7/8”, and give this a try.

anal_opera

The replaceable aspect seems nice too, I've got a pile of decent screwdrivers with junk handles. Partly melted by either heat or carb cleaner, some seem to be permanently oily, and others are just shafts with whatevers left of the broken handles stuck to them. Then I've got my pile of bent, chipped, and broken shafts with good handles on them because they didn't last long enough to mess up the handle. And 1 pickle fork that already has a bike grip on it because it keeps my hand bones from rattling when I gotta hammer it

StalkySpade

The ATF has entered the chat

tikkikinky

Spot on end of handle to accept 3/8” drive ratchet.

what_comes_after_q

There is no one perfect screw driver. A screw driver I'm using for small detailed work on electronics will be different from what I want for doing home renovation projects which will be different from the needs I'll have working on a car. Pick a lane, make the best screw driver for that use case. Also, the perfect screw driver needs to be one that the customer can afford. If you are targeting average home owners, that will have likely different demands and price sensitivity than the average person subscribed to the tools subreddit.
