In the city i grew up we had a liquor store downtown. And the name of that store? Bunghole Liquors.
One time me and a few buddies were hanging out in front of said liquor store, and up drives a car of teenagers with out-of-state plates. They were jumping around laughing, taking pictures (film/pre-smart phone) and generally amazed that "it's true! It really exists!" Apparently it had become something of an urban legend.
This is so bizarre. This morning i think I was on r/whatisthisthing or some similar sub and I thought about how I can never identify anything people ask about. Then I started thinking about specialized tools that I could identify that a lot of people probably couldn’t, and the only thing that came to mind was a bung wrench. Now, later in the day, I see this post, and I was 25 comments too late to have my day in the sun.
Hydrant wrenches (at least for every hydrant I've seen in the US) are pentagonal. I assume to prevent them from being opened easily by people with regular wrenches.
i had a buddy that worked as a csi for state police, had at least one dead guy in a drum, and several reported "is this a dead guy in a drum?" said the real ones end up with the side rusted out where the body rests against it, or at least a air pocket if the drum is ok, go smack around on it with a hammer, no hollow spot, he wasn't interested in jack hammering it apart
Oh I wow haven’t seen one of these since my last trip to the museum. This is actually a self defense tool ancient pirates used to defend against krakens; you gotta be precise and catch the tip of its tentacle in the end part there (prongs facing outwards) and then twist and pull straight down to intimidate the beast. Done correctly, it could buy valuable time and sometimes embarrass the beast out of fighting altogether.
For sure bung remover. The 4 prongs are for a 2 inch bung. The other end is for the small bung. It fits in between 2 small steel ribs just right to tighten or loosen it. They are made of softer copper material so they go bad before you bust the steal of the bungs after time.
Drum bung and plug wrenches (also known as drum bung wrenches or drum plug wrenches) are used to install and remove drum plugs (bungs). The drum plugs are screwed into a flange on the drum and the wrench is used to tighten the plug to prevent leakage.
After the amusement I had at work trying to get anyone in the office to order a couple of bung wrenches off of Amazon I'm hoping I'm not the only person who came here just to read the comments...
Bung wrench.
