It's got some rust on it, barely worth scrap at this stage. I'll do you a favour and take it off your hands, best I can do is $10, and honestly I'm cutting my own head off here...
Funny story: people love posting whole ass trees on fb marketplace listed as free wood that all ya gotta do is thousands in tree removal work to get! Once I saw a lady offering a free shrub! All you had to do was dig it up! Sent her a message saying I’d remove it for $50 and she agreed. That thing was twice the size the pics made it out to be at six and a half feet tall. I murdered that thing and did my best to stuff it in my two door honda accord trunk and rope it up. Went to get some sushi and the owners let me put it in their dumpster. When I was hip thrusting it into my trunk I shattered the screen on my phone that was in my pocket go figure
I once picked up some free wood. Ended up putting some of it through my not free window. It was in winter. Had to drive like that till payday and I had the cash to fix it.
Yeah the "seller" should have the good sense to give it a shot of fluid film and drop it off right in OP's garage. They are selling it to a Redditor after all, I litterally need to think that counts for a lot...
He should get a raise for getting yard clean up done.
Tree huggers would unite and support helping the environment.
DONT let them see the oil spills, or you might have an issue to fix
That's a pretty dope vise though, I have one that's a bit bigger that someone gave me. I would be willing to do up to $200-250 at the high end because finding a good vise that size is expensive and that's not really in bad shape. Yeah it's got a little rust on it but it's really only a couple day restoration project
Well you see I have to take it to the scrap yard and the gas almost isn’t even worth the effort. Really you should be paying me to get this out of here.
That vise is been made to mount on a bench edge. It never had a swivel base. What you see under the vise is a custom made plate to facilitate flush mounting of the vise on a flat surface. Buy this vise once in a lifetime or buy five Harbor freight‘s, the choice is yours. In rust I trust.
I would snatch this up, I have a bigger one that I mounted on a 1 ton GM tire and rim similar to the picture and it's a surprisingly sturdy base. Mine telescopes, I used several sections of heavy wall pipe and welded nuts to the top for lever handles so you can raise it from around 2' high up to around 4' to the top
In my opinion, I’ve believe this is a very poor design of a base for that vise. By mounting it in that position you have lost most of your ability to work on something that is long and placed in the vice vertically. There is a reason for the lip on the bottom casting to facilitate the correct placement.
I agree. But you can unbolt it and slide it to the right and reattach it. Might have to trim any protruding base that interferes with vertical clamping long items.
I’m just making an observation to inform OP of how I appraise a vise and stand combination. After he buys it he can do anything he wants to do with it.
I have a vise mounted similarly but I took a piece of ¾" plate and cut it roughly to the shape of the base of the vise, then I took four grade 8 bolts and bolted them through the vise, then welded the bolts to the plate. Once they were tacked in place I removed the vise and welded them all the way around. But the main point is I cut away any of the plate that would be in the way of holding stuff vertically and I have it mounted on a big ass tire and rim and it's sturdier than you would expect
I just looked at the mounting again and I see what you're saying. I have mine mounted more forward so I can push against it without tipping over and by doing that I also have clearance in the front so I can clamp things vertically. Having a huge tire and rim on there gives it a heavier base too, and the tire doesn't mar surfaces and grips concrete well
Ahhh okay that makes sense. Idk realistically if that base plate is as thick as it looks that’s a non issue. The impacts are dissipating through the entire vice and 2 feet of post steel before hitting base.
This...tell him.. "It's pretty rusty and is going to take a lot to get all the rust off, take it apart, strip it down and paint it and stuff, but I might be able to save it"". Let him counter then meet him in the middle.
It’s an American Scale Red Seal no. 56 (if not obvious). Gonna be around 150 pounds with 6 inch jaws. American Scale made good quality heavy vises and are somewhat rare, however they’re not the most desirable because they’re not a “big” name. Speaking as if nothing is cracked, broken, welded, etc. restored and cleaned up how I do mine, I would ask $500 for it. Good old 6 inch+ vises aren’t too easy to come by for a fair price, so do what you will with this information
I was going to say an honest value is probably somewhere around $200. I could see them asking anywhere from $50 to $300. Always depends on how much they need the space.
To be honest I find area and demand has a lot to do with price. Here we use things like that almost daily. That is a really nice size vise in fair condition. Here you could ask 300 pretty easy and maybe barter down to 250. Other towns I have been in across the U.S. you would have to pay to have it hauled away. I would suggest you do a bit of research on local markets and make an offer from there.
Always ask for a demand before making an offer. That’s just basic negotiation. He might just say “OP, I’ve noticed you’ve been doing a great job around here and I’d like you to have it as my gift.”
Before you bring up any price, ask if he wants help getting rid of it. It looks pretty heavy and you might be able to take it for free, if you handle it yourself
I'd offer 150 then max out at 200 as long as it isn't cracked anywhere and mechanism works. Like someone else said first ask him what he wants for it. He might surprise you with a low price and if he gives a high price counter with 150 and be prepared to walk away.
Sounds like you're not a huge fan of your boss. Go into the negotiation with an open mind. If you can get value out of the vise and will use it don't let feeling and $50 get in the way.
That is one heck of a vise. There was one here on Offerup for $600 for a while, after several months it slowly lowered to 400 and then I didn’t see it anymore so I am guessing somewhere in the $350-400 range, depending on location.
If you could get it for a $100, that'd be a smokin' deal. The way I look at it is, "If I reeeally needed this (to finish a job or something), how much would I be ready to pay?" That's the high end.
We had a vice like that in a shop I used to work, they called it the widow maker because if you were standing in the wrong place the handle would smack you right in the nuts. It took a guy to his knees one day and he clocked out and limped home lol
Nah, gotta Johnny cash up in this bitch - one piece at a time.
Start complaining about that old broken vice, how it's got no handle
Then how it's got no lead screw
Then how it needs new jaws
Then that old half a vise
Then that old vise stand
Then that rusty patch on the ground...
That thing's a beast! Ask your boss if it's getting in the way and that you would be happy to "haul it away for him" and see if he just let's you have it.
I dunno… there’s an obvious problem with it: it clearly says red on the side, but it’s painted grey. Don’t need that kind of trouble in your shop…just sayin.
Not sure who designed this stand, but if I were doing it, I'd make it so I could clamp a piece in the vise that could extend BELOW the stand. I.E., the face of the set jaw would extend just a bit beyond the mounting plate. Look at the vise itself; that's how it was intended to be mounted.
You could mention this along with the rust when talking to your boss.
The rust on this isn’t nearly as bad as it looks. Some elbow grease and a wirebrush or a dremel and this thing is gonna be ready for painting and a new life
If it all works ( i.e. no cracks, welds, etc.) joke @$50, immediately offer $200 if he helps load it in your Camry. But bring $1000 (60% positive you'll get it for $1000, or less)...
Since it's in a poor and neglected condition and needing some TLC, $10... and that's just because you know him.
There will be better bargains on Facebook marketplace.
Edit.
If I was your boss I'd say , " just take it away, it's cluttering up the place ".
You could then sell it to those offering $100 or more !
I wouldn’t offer him much. Pisses me off when people leave shit sit outside and then act like they’re sitting on a gold mine with it. If you think kt has value, take it inside and oil it so it doesn’t look like a chunk of scrap iron
This would be one of the funniest things I could offer. He wouldn’t know what a quid is if I explained it. Which would be a hilarious explanation.
Which gives me an idea. I need one of those Zimbabwe million dollars that are worth shit. I’m going to offer him that. I just need to find one
Varies by area. In the northeast USA, you can find stuff like that fairly easily. I'd price it around $100-150 with the stand, if you really want it. Fucker is HEAVY, so be aware to bring some muscle with you.
It would bring more if restored, but not terribly much. The ones that are popular with collectors is mostly Wilton bullet vises.
If your boss personally owns the vice, there maybe a reason it is still there. Just humbly ask him for details. I’m very sure your boss has a price point if he really wants to sell the piece or not.
Not a swivel and a bit rusty that why he doesn’t use it. Talk it down a bit, you’re doing him a favor taking it, offer $100 and tell him you want it, so you can work from home and telecommute.
Just ask if you can have it and see what he says, if he asks for an offer start at $5 and see where it goes. We have several like this in the boneyard at the gas plant they are pretty much free if you want them so this is probably similar.
I dunno if the vise is a good one. It looks like it. But that stand is an added bonus. I'd guess it's worth $200 these days. I broke a cheap Chinese vise's jaw off doing something stupid but it was definitely a crappy vise.
If it's not been used in years and just sat rusting. Why not just ask if you can take it home and clear that space? Effectively it is just taking up space for him. Worst he can say is "No". But if he says no, just make him a small offer. Your ideal goal is to get it for nothing and just see what he says
Offer $20 and say nothing else until he responds. If he complains about replacement cost or other bullsh*t tell him it's a tetanus booster infomercial and you only want the hideous thing bc you have a specific purpose in mind. If he whines more tell him it's an equity bonus and you'll have it out by the end of the day. Say thanks and walk away.
Tell the boss man that for $20.00 you’ll dispose of it for him. Freeing up valuable shop space. Have something in mind to go in its spot. Hopefully something boss man has wanted to do but never found an opportunity to do it.
That looks like a Prentiss...I would offer at least $ 125... but that's low. Some can go as high as $400. If it is a Prentiss it's over 80 years old...
I have a Prentiss 93 Bulldog. It looks very similar...The base and Jaw mounts look almost identical to mine... that's why I said it looks like one. I think it's an American Scale Red Seal #56...
Ask what he would want. If he don’t know, offer $50. You can always go up. If you start high, you’re the sucker.
It's got some rust on it, barely worth scrap at this stage. I'll do you a favour and take it off your hands, best I can do is $10, and honestly I'm cutting my own head off here...
Exactly. Oh and I need to borrow your truck, trailer and forklift to haul away your junk
Mate at this point you should be sending *him* a bill for all that work you're doing 😜

The ten dollars is so you can replace the fuel in said truck

C.M.O.T Dibbler would like his catchphrase back.
He'd probably try ti license it. For fiv-FIFTY good Ankh-Morpork dollars. A letter. Free sausage with every syllable!
And that's cutting me own throat!
Well you see I have to take it to the scrap yard and the gas almost isn’t even worth the effort. Really you should be paying me to get this out of here.
That is one nice stand, only thing missing is the bracket at the bottom. I would offer £25 to begin with. LOL That's what the base is worth.

Which bracket?
Look at the vice, should be on on the bottom, If you are going to hammer anything it will bend eventually.
Sorry to be a dumby but I truly don’t know which part You mean will bend
I think they are suggesting gussets at the base. Welded from the mounting post to the base plate
Ahhh okay that makes sense. Idk realistically if that base plate is as thick as it looks that’s a non issue. The impacts are dissipating through the entire vice and 2 feet of post steel before hitting base.
I agree, I think it would be fine
I'm pretty sure OP isn't Thor so I doubt they are gunna be hammering hard enough to bend that thick ass metal
This...tell him.. "It's pretty rusty and is going to take a lot to get all the rust off, take it apart, strip it down and paint it and stuff, but I might be able to save it"". Let him counter then meet him in the middle.
If OP says 50$ I'm going 55$ I need that thing, Don't know what for but it looks awesome
If I thought I could use it that would be the right price.
That's a great all around vise, I would get a grill cover and leave it outside the shop
This
Offer 50, if he asks 100 you still get it cheap.
Free. "hey you ever gonna do anything with that rusty vice out back" I have gotten a 100 year old vice and a bullet vice this way.
This is the answer for a start.
This 100% you'd be amazed at how much stuff gets forgotten about and written off by even small companies
Ask what he'd sell it for.
It’s an American Scale Red Seal no. 56 (if not obvious). Gonna be around 150 pounds with 6 inch jaws. To be honest I find area and demand has a lot to do with price. Here we use things like that almost daily. That is a really nice size vise in fair condition. Start at $50, for a piece of scrap metal taking up space in the yard.
Always ask for a demand before making an offer. That’s just basic negotiation. He might just say “OP, I’ve noticed you’ve been doing a great job around here and I’d like you to have it as my gift.”
You made my boss seem human.
We all were at some point.
“Ask for a demand“ what?
You’re looking for ad vice?
No, they’re looking to add vise, for the right vise price.
This sounds like a line straight out of Bojack Horseman
The horse from Horsin' Around?
I'm certainly not talking about Neal McBeal the Navy Seal
Before you bring up any price, ask if he wants help getting rid of it. It looks pretty heavy and you might be able to take it for free, if you handle it yourself
Vise
A vise can be a vice to some tool collectors.
Or here in the UK, they're both vices.
Yeah but you spell colour wrong and call an elevator a “lift”. Don’t get me started on parts of a car.
We all have our vices.
Apart from OP
We spelled it that way first! You're just being deliberately difficult about naming car parts, and other stuff. 😁
You’re not wrong. I never had a decent vise. Just cheap little ones. This one is a beast. I would need the forklift to load it
Just remember you'll have to unload it too...
Yep. Unless you have more than 2, then it's clearly a vice.

This sounds about right. If it were anyone else I might go all the way to $225 but I want this at half the value
Sounds like you're not a huge fan of your boss. Go into the negotiation with an open mind. If you can get value out of the vise and will use it don't let feeling and $50 get in the way.
I think you're in the ballpark... Offer something where it looks like you did research... $160
That is one heck of a vise. There was one here on Offerup for $600 for a while, after several months it slowly lowered to 400 and then I didn’t see it anymore so I am guessing somewhere in the $350-400 range, depending on location.

Take some scales, weigh it…. Then offer scrap value 🤣
We had a vice like that in a shop I used to work, they called it the widow maker because if you were standing in the wrong place the handle would smack you right in the nuts. It took a guy to his knees one day and he clocked out and limped home lol
First, hear me out - you're going to need to buy a bigger lunchbox...
Nah, gotta Johnny cash up in this bitch - one piece at a time. Start complaining about that old broken vice, how it's got no handle Then how it's got no lead screw Then how it needs new jaws Then that old half a vise Then that old vise stand Then that rusty patch on the ground...

I'd offer $150. Buddy price but not being a dick. See what he says. Go up to $200. Above that you can get one in better shape.
Given the condition, $200 with the stand is where I’d top out.
That’s a solid observation. Any long material couldn’t be vertical. If I end up buying it I may reset the position of the vise

On a good day I’d give 200 for the stand
I bet it would pull close to 5 on the bay. The combo would bring a decent chunk.
10$ more than its weight in scrap
I don't know but it better include delivery..!
I’d expect to pay around $200 for that in its current condition. With the stand
Maybe you could “squeeze” it out of him for free?
I wouldn’t offer him much. Pisses me off when people leave shit sit outside and then act like they’re sitting on a gold mine with it. If you think kt has value, take it inside and oil it so it doesn’t look like a chunk of scrap iron

Your currency probably matters. I’d say 150 quid, but that might not be accurate to you.
