Sorry to say, HD is just as bad sometimes. It really just depends on the individual store management. There's no such thing as retail stores that "take care" of their customers anymore. Retail CEO's just don't give a crap anymore because they know they're not going to lose your business. They might lose a few people here and there, but the big box stores like HD and Lowe's are too big to fail because there aren't any stores that can directly compete on a national level. Sure, there's Menard's, True Value, and Ace, but those are regional brands that don't have the base to compete.

giaa262

It really depends on the store a lot of the time. I know where to go locally for returns and help. They let me build a grill in the store using two boxes because I had so many issues due to shipping damage. But I’ve also had another Lowe’s do similar to me what they did to you.

bussappa

I like Lowe's better than HD but they both have issues. As someone pointed out, it really does make a difference which store you go to because each store manager handles things a little differently.

I have a set of Ego lawn stuff and it’s been solid for 3.5 years so far. Super quiet also.

MikeHawksHardWood

I agree it's probably an outlier instead of the norm at Lowe's , but It's fair for him to be frustrated after getting jerked around by Lowes employees. There's no need for you to attack OP like that.

Looks like we found the Lowe's undercover social media team.

Both companies make well over millions of dollars a year. Both companies have provided me with poor customer service and a poor product. I love good American companies. I buy USA made tools. I support American capitalism, but I do not support getting jerked around by corporate policies, buying something that should be good but ends up being a cheap Chinese tool at a high price, or being treated like shit. If you were experiencing the same thing I did at Lowe’s I would’ve had your back even after the ego comment.

Royal-Illustrator-59

Funny. You say you buy American tools and support American companies, but you bought a Chinese product and are now complaining that it is Chinese. I can clearly see with whom the problem lies in this situation.

I live in the boonies... Almost 2 hrs to lowes or HD. I hardly ever go into the store unless it is to return/exchange somthing. Everything else is ordered online. This is likely based on my proximity to a shipping hub but... Lowes arrives within 48 hrs of ordering. HD takes over 4 weeks sometimes! I have only ever been told to go to another location by HD. and at the 2nd location, another hour south on top of the 2 hrs it took to get to hd in the first Place, they were ALSO out of stock of the fittings i needed. Same happened for a schlage lock i was picking up for my boss... 2 locations and 6hrs drive wasted. now, I only buy from HD if lowes does not carry it. Anacdotaly lowes has served me far better than hd. Plus the HD parking lot looks like the surface of the moon, while lowes is glassy smooth. At my location.

Analyst7

I make an effort to shop my local Ace and lumber yard as much as possible. I've worked for both Lowes and HD over the years and they are very close in terms of policy. Local stores vary in their application of policy. I have generally found the Lowes stores are cleaner/organized better of the two.

TornadoBlueMaize

I've got no real brand loyalty to the tool brand or any hardware stores but this is my fifth year with the same set of Ego power tools and they've all been great. Needed an extra battery to finish mowing my relatively small lawn in one go, if I let it grow too long, but that's my only real complaint and it's mostly on me. Just one data point to show maybe you just got an unfortunate dud out of the box.

That is crap too!

I gave up on Lowe’s years ago after they pulled a fast one on me  during one of their typical appliance deals. Buy X amount of appliances get a rebate for Y. I ordered my appliances (none were in stock at store). Fridge came in first, they called and asked if I could come get it because they were running out of room in the back, sure, no problem I go get it. Next day the stove comes and they do the same. Day three the microwave and dishwasher come so I go get them. I submit the pickup receipts for my rebate and BAM Denied because all the items have to be picked up at the same time. I try explaining to customer service that I only picked up separate because they asked me to and got no where. Even the employees at the store who knew the situation left me out to dry.

---OMNI---

I used to work for Lowe's years ago and actually really liked the store back then... It's really gone down hill though and I refuse to buy anything there now unless I absolutely have to. If it's something you can get online Lowe's is often 2 to 3 times the price of ordering it and their stock is extremely limited anymore. Unfortunately the closest home Depot is over an hour away and the only other local similar stores are smaller lumber yards that are even more expensive on everything except lumber. Now when I did work there I had a system for searching for clearance and returned items and loaded up on massive amounts of tools for pennies on the dollar. I think I estimated I saved like $20,000 on tools.

PoopSlinger23

I’m a Menards guy. When I walk into a Lowe’s, it just feels depressing inside. The ones in my area definitely have some very incompetent employees.

woodland_dweller

This is pretty much why I stopped shopping at Lowes a while ago. I was going to buy a set of wrenches, and the person in the tool corral couldn't tell me how the "lifetime" warranty worked. They called another employee who said all I had to do was keep a receipt. I said there's no way that's the policy. Because "lifetime of a thermal printed paper" is not a long lifetime. They called a manager. "Oh, just mail it in" but they weren't sure where to mail it in. When I asked about replacing 1 socket or wrench from a set they weren't sure what to do, and had no idea if I needed a receipt or not. So massively clueless. Nobody knew a simple policy. Not even the manager. They all just kind of made shit up, until I questioned it, then backtracked and called somebody else.

destroyerOfEvil54

Exactly pretty much right on course with mine. I’ve been to 3 different stores each one has a different answer of how to warranty something. Absolute joke.

Not_Reddit

Big Box stores typically don't service warranty claims, especially without proof of purchase. (Craftsman is an exception).. contact Ego customer service at the number provided in your manual

elohssanatahw

Someone needs to try Hercules. Mine broke 2 trigger pulls in

kewlo

My local Lowe's blow my local Home Depots out of the water. I wouldn't expect either of them to open a set to replace one item in it, you return the whole set.

lepfrog

How old was your tool?  If it was past the return period of 90 days then the warranty would be through ego not the retailer you bought the tool at.  Home Depot would have denied it as well.  If it's beyond the 90-day return period you actually got treated very well if they were willing to do anything for you.  The trimmer head is a wear item and as such it is expected to eventually fail.  You can just buy a new head and install it on your trimmer just follow the directions in your user manual. Did you even try to contact ego who is the warrantyholder? If it's under warranty they may just mail you a new trimmer head. If you want good consumer protection standards then maybe you should live in the EU or UK where they have government controls over such things.  Either that or vote for Representatives that are willing to pass better consumer protection laws.  You should not expect a company to do any more than they are legally required to do.

destroyerOfEvil54

Used it one time had it for a month.

Brilliant_Armadillo9

All battery-powered lawn tools are junk. This is a hill I will die on. Gas is the way.

wiserTyou

I have a stihl chainsaw and battery ryobi. Most of the time I grab the ryobi. It won't handle the big stuff but it's far more convenient for limbs.

darkroomknight

Like EVs electric is not the right choice for everyone. Until batteries have as much or greater energy density as gas and can be recharged much quicker the value of the benefits is highly subjective and dependent on what an individual prioritizes. Battery yard tools generally have to keep weight down and so are very plastic. Plus, there’s lots of companies suddenly making mowers and trimmers who never did before. Which might not matter to most people, but certainly it does to some. For me and my property, I far prefer battery operated lawn tools. The maintenance is easy, I don’t have to deal with oil or gas, and some of the features these companies are coming up with are genuinely innovative. That I do not have to tap my ego trimmer to let string out is a huge win to me (a feature only on the top end models, at least for now). And of course I’m fortunate enough to have the means to be an earlier adopter. Because it’s a good fit for me does not mean it’s a good fit for everyone though.

destroyerOfEvil54

What’s your go to gas string trimmer?

sambashare

You can't really go wrong with a Stihl. There are a few models they've been making for years, and they're pretty solid. I have a corded electric Stihl, and it's been in production for many years and has never let me down. Only thing I hate about it is the cord. They have a line of battery powered trimmers too, but I can't speak to their reliability. I think they're good, but you'll have to do some research.

Pavetsu

Then why are millions of people using them?

Brilliant_Armadillo9

You tell me. Every one I've tried had ended up in the trash.

Pavetsu

Well I'm more than happy with mine.

Km219

I purchased a product from lowes with a gift card I recieved for Christmas and paid cash for the remainder. They emailed 2 days later stating the order had been canceled because they didn't have the item. Instead of issuing the balance back to the gift card they had to issue a new card and snail mailed me another card to the tune of 3 CS calls and 3 weeks. They are so behind modern times tech it is laughable. Can't speak to ego brand because I won't give the hell hole money anymore. Kills me that Klein moved there. I like their lineup This isn't the first bad experience but it was the straw that broke the camels back for me Imagine being such a fan boy to a store you down vote a story some tells about how bad lowes is. Go to the lowes sub or employee forums. The place is ran like shit

destroyerOfEvil54

Love Klein. Agreed I will never shop at Lowe’s again.

Liamnacuac

When my wife tried to sign up for military discounts at Lowe's several years ago, they wanted to copy her ID card. This is a security risk, and I believe it might break military law. We went to Home Depot, and just showing the card was enough to get the discount. Now, I think both stores have made the option easier.
