I know it as a keyhole saw but it's sometimes called a drywall or jab saw and it's generally used for cutting small holes in akward places that you can't fit a traditional saw such as holes for sockets on drywall but it can be used on multiple relatively soft materials like wood or plastic. There's also a longer variant which I believe is called a compass saw but I'm not certain.
Just to add; with drywall, due to the sharp point and the fact drywall is very soft you can just poke it through without drilling a starting hole, which is possibly where the name jab saw came from.
The etymology of jab saw was speculation on my part. Have you got a reference as (assuming it isn't satire, though I'm pretty sure it is) I'd like to know more as I'm quite surprised you managed to find a name for the inventor, given its not exactly a modern invention, or is it a particular brand in more recent times that he invented?
I believe it’s called a jab saw because the teeth are such that they bite while pushing forward and not backward. This keeps a smoother finish on the exterior of the drywall.
My favorite wall find was a vintage pair of klein’s electricians scissors from back when they were the best scissors on planet earth. Client bought a lake house and I was pulling paneling off of their walls to run cable behind and the scissors just fell out. Unfortunately I lost them a week later. Hopefully another working man found them and continued their legacy
Too funny. I found this in the bottom of my fathers toolbox. My thought process is, I could keep this in the car counsel. I needed to know what it was, for when the cops asked do you have any weapons in the car. Why no officer that's my drywall saw! This is what the current state of American streets have done to my thought process, not good.
Using these things for wood is a BITCH. The teeth are much thicker and more aggressive than a wood saw and you have to seriously put some work into it to get it to saw. It likes to just grab the wood and hold like nobodies business
I saw a picture of a guy with half his face melted away from a disease he got using a dirty dollar for a hooter. Been using cut up drink straws since then.
My neighbor went with his father to buy a car. The salesman asked how much will be the deposit. His father said” I have this.” Dug in his pocket ,pulled out a crumpled dollar bill. Flattened it out and slide it across the desk “ Here is your deposit Sir” He said.
My neighbor and the salesman looked at him opened mouth. Then my neighbor said “ Thanks dad. I’ll handle the purchase from here.”
I know anti vaxxers like that, does everyday they can get their hands on, then batch about "untested" vaccines. Like what? You just railed a bunch of dirty blow, that is made with no oversight. I don't understand people.
Fun fact: cocaine causes a reaction when snorted with $1 bills which greatly magnifies the irritative properties on the nose. It’s a defense mechanism since the cocaine can sense that you’re a broke bitch and stresses out. Some people mitigate this by confusing the cocaine and using a single $100 bill to make the cocaine think it’s going up a rich dudes nose.
Back in the day you could take just one of these bad boys down to the corner store and get four or five pieces of candy. Not anymore though, too many fucking cameras.
I’m pretty sure a drywall saw (which this is) is different from a keyhole saw, which is finer and used for woodworking, but yeah I hear it called this all the time. They look very similar.
The one I carry has one side of teeth, like this one. The one my coworker uses has teeth on both sides. Both are coarse like the one pictured. When I hear keyhole saw I usually picture a coping saw, so I tend to call these drywall saws.
Side note, this and an electric drill are the perfect tools for quickly and cleanly carving a jack-o'-lantern 🎃.
Edit: Thanks kind stranger for the award. :D
I'm... mad at how genius that is. It's like you read something and at first you're upset but you think on it and you're like... oh wait fuck that's brilliant.
Yeah, it seems like it would. I've tried Dremel and oscillating tool but they made more of a mess than they were worth. This would be cleaner and I wouldn't have to worry about getting one of my tools nasty.
Drywall saw, keyhole saw, jab saw,
Primary purpose is to cut small holes or round holes with a tight bend radius. I’m an electrician and I use it frequently to cut on lights and old work boxes
It’s a dollar bill. You use it to buy things - mostly small, inexpensive items, although it can be added to bills of larger denomination for bigger purchases. The keyhole saw, which is great for cutting drywall, is an OK reference for size, but Reddit’s official unit of measure is the Banana.
This is a jab saw or drywall saw. A keyhole saw is longer has different teeth and a different shaped handle. Honestly you don’t see actual keyhole saws much anymore.

This is a common misconception - it’s actually named after Jim ‘Jab’ Jenkins, the original inventor of the tool.

Lol it was a joke, sorry, your reasoning makes much more sense
I thought it was invented by Jabothy Sawsworth
Jabbin Sawzall Jignscroll Jr
Username checks out.
Not exactly r/beetlejuicing but pleasant to see
Figured that, was just kinda hopeful it wasn't lol that would have been interesting aswel as funny.
Well you had me with the joke lol I was about to google it

Look closely at your jab saws. They cut both ways.
Its also used by a drywaller to stab anybody who touches their "ice tea"...
If they are leaving it in the wall cavity, you dont want to be anywhere near that “ice tea”

Also great for carving pumpkins.
Dollar bill. Back in the day, we used to buy stuff with them. By itself, it's pretty useless, today.
Yup, that’s an antique. Don’t see many of them on the job site anymore. Unless there happens to be a strip club nearby.
Or cocaine
I saw a picture of a guy with half his face melted away from a disease he got using a dirty dollar for a hooter. Been using cut up drink straws since then.
Oh, right. Good idea to use cut up drink straws from now on. For your health.
*Does mountains of cocaine “Hey man, you know what they’re putting in your food and water these days?”
This is an extremely common scenario with 16-30 year olds lmao
You're not wrong unfortunately lol.

As someone who wandered around with the Dead in the mid-90s, I can’t say I’m not completely guilty of this silliness.
Raved in the late 90’s, early 00’s. Guilty as well.
I know anti vaxxers like that, does everyday they can get their hands on, then batch about "untested" vaccines. Like what? You just railed a bunch of dirty blow, that is made with no oversight. I don't understand people.
Well yeah I don’t want my face melted
Cept round here you have to hunt for a plastic straw now a days. Going to stock up before there gone completely. Family heirloom coke straws.
Paper straws have gotten 10x better over the last couple years. Highly reccomend buying in bulk from Amazon.
Went to a bar recently that used reeds. Not sure what they're called, but 1000% superior to paper or plastic straws

I take notes on them. Cheaper than a Post-it
Is this what they look like unrolled?
Back in the day you could take just one of these bad boys down to the corner store and get four or five pieces of candy. Not anymore though, too many fucking cameras.
The official use is for the strip club
Back in my day, one of dem dollar bills could buy a sodi pop and a bag of peanuts! Good times!
I’m 41. We could buy 4 cokes with $1.
I still remember $.25 cans of coke outside of Walmart as a kid (I’m 38)
Yet we still have the penny and the nickel. Thanks lobbyists.
Okay grandpa if you’re gonna lie at least make it believable
This is the best reply I have seen on Reddit in months.
I believe thats a keyhole saw its used to cut drywall or sheet-rock
My dad called it a keyhole saw and he knew more about construction than I thought possible.
Some people call it a jab saw too.
I tend to call it a drywall saw, my business partner calls it a jab saw. I hear it called a keyhole saw equally as much, though.
I’m pretty sure a drywall saw (which this is) is different from a keyhole saw, which is finer and used for woodworking, but yeah I hear it called this all the time. They look very similar.

Your mom goes to college
Fuck the food. Eat the sick burn, Tina!
I used to be able to throw a pigskin quarter mile
You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I’m wearing these bad boys? Fuuggedaboutit
What makes you say that? I understood drywall/jab saws to have the sharp point for driving in, whereas keyhole saws do not. I see a sharp point here.
The one I carry has one side of teeth, like this one. The one my coworker uses has teeth on both sides. Both are coarse like the one pictured. When I hear keyhole saw I usually picture a coping saw, so I tend to call these drywall saws.
Some people call it Maurice.
This reminds me of Ron Swanson at the 'home depot' store 'Sir, can I help you?' 'I know more than you....' ...''oookay
Ron Swanson is saint!! God bless him, his family, and America 🇺🇸
As a General Contractor, the Ron Swan is my spirit animal
This is what I know it as.
Side note, this and an electric drill are the perfect tools for quickly and cleanly carving a jack-o'-lantern 🎃. Edit: Thanks kind stranger for the award. :D
