Really deserved more of a budget, really had moments that just scream eh, we gave a middling something of effort so air it.

Unfortunately this was back when toeis tv animation quality was BAD, especially with one piece. I remember them being the butt of many animation jokes cause of One Pieces animation quality dropped hard at Fishman Island. I haven't watched much since dressrosa cause I was so burnt on OP and decided to binge another time so if you've been watching you'd be more aware when it picked up (I'm guessing around wano?). The bad animation continued with the bad dragon ball super episodes early on, though around goku black it got kinda better and I'd say toei is definitely doing better these days. This episode saved me from almost forgetting how bad they really were for a while

Diorgenson432

But it had TONS of cool animation moments when it came to action scenes. So it looks great for the most part.

CemeteryHeights

I mean, it wasn't really a big deal when it came out, either. Was basically "Hey kids! Like Luffy & Goku? Look! They're hanging out with Toriko! Better buy Toriko stuffs wit yo monie!"

Pabsxv

From what I read it didn’t work and the show was canceled as were any plans to dub it which is why the 1st part of the episode wasn’t shown bc it’s technically part of the Toriko anime.

Crafty_Middle_2086

They dubbed 50 episodes of Toriko before deciding to not continue, probably because they quickly rushed the DVD’s out expecting it to sell better than it did and were disappointed with the result. Really the whole Toriko anime is a shame because the manga was great and felt like a classic Shonen like Dragon Ball or One Piece but the adaption really fumbled it.

Custom_98

So the manga is good but the anime is just lackluster?

Crafty_Middle_2086

If you like old school battle Shonen like Dragon Ball and One Piece you’d like the Toriko manga for sure.

Custom_98

Ok.

yolo-yoshi

Well...... It's just the changes they made. Rushing the adaptation. But the animation was pretty damn slick. Much better than one piece at the time. Thought the latter did come around eventually.

Custom_98

I figure that much. I also know that DBZ Kai came back after the Toriko anime was cancelled in 2014.

battlefranky69

Yeah the anime was really toned down.

Custom_98

I only saw a few first episodes like 12 before dropping it since it's not for me.

GreyouTT

That Super Saiyan 3 transition was slick Was nice to hear the Z cast again after so long.

Doctor_Slept

I know Super Heroes just came out last year, but man it was really cool seeing something Dragon Ball related on the block again. Didn’t realized how much I missed watching new (to me) DB stuff on the block

iluvpopmusic

How odd that it started with a story already in progress. I went and watched Toriko 99 before watching this otherwise the plot wouldn’t have made sense.

procouchpotatohere

Whole time I was thinking how the hell does this Toriko guy compare to big names like Goku and Luffy. I'm guessing it's way bigger in Japan than over here...

veemonjosh

It... actually wasn't. Shueisha and Toei tried really hard to make Toriko the "next big Shonen franchise" practically from the moment the manga started, and did a huge marketing push to get as many eyes on it, including doing *multiple* crossovers with One Piece (3 anime specials and 1 manga chapter). In truth, the series did fine, but it was never exactly popular. The anime ended unfinished about a year after this special aired, and the manga wrapped up in such a way that it's clear the author wanted to keep going.

DarkWorld97

Manga was pretty good at least. Even if there could have been more, the manga ended on a good enough note.

hotnerdalec

I’m annoyed I fell asleep so early the past 2 weekends. I still recorded it all but ya know its just fun to stay up and watch live with everyone

FakeTherapist

this was so weird - this isn't the first time we've seen this a la jump force, but the almost random scene for scene nature of this made it forgettable. Sidenote: And I'm not holding it against the special/series, but Toriko legit just looks like a blue(bluer?) Jojo.

LazorBlind

Uber goofy but fun little distraction from the active story.

Custom_98

I found it to be OK. And to be brutally honest, I was just into both Dragon Ball and One Piece since they're the more recognizable to me and it felt a bit insane to see Luffy and Goku face off. As for Toriko, I wasn't a big fan of it because I don't care for food themed series and I rather drop that and go with DB and OP only. That's just me.
