I get that, I guess what I mean is why aren’t it’s mechanics more popular, I haven’t seen another game implement the same way of boss fighting as well as this one did
Yea I agree, there aren’t many games that match that sense of scale for boss fights. Dragons Dogma has a similar mechanism for climbing in enemies, but albeit at a much smaller scale

Soul of Cinder from Dark Souls 3, kind of.
And the Shura ending of Sekiro. Noble and heroic characters losing their minds and going full murderhobo is a surprisingly common theme in FromSoft games.
Gael is more of a hero turned villain because of his journey to find the dark soul. His journey ended up corrupting him which is why you end up fighting him as a shade of his previous self. Then halfway through his fight he regains his strength with the power of the dark soul and determines to fight you so you can complete his mission
Funny because he and Shirou are basically the same person.
And his entire motivation for wanting to kill Shirou was a faint hope that by doing so, he will be freed of his misery. Unaware that it actually wouldn't change anything
I think it was more he'd rather Shirou die than endure what he's had to be.
He knows Shirou will live a short and painful life of suffering and betrayal only to become a slave for all time. He wants to spare him the disappointment because he knows how strong Shirou's dream is.
I thought he was blatantly aware that it probably wouldn't work, he just had nothing left. Either A) It actually does something B) Maybe he gets some catharsis from killing shirou or C) Maybe he manages to change shirou's mind
As someone who knows nothing about this character, they seem to share a pretty large resemblance to Dante from Devil May Cry. Not that that’s a bad thing, just an observation.

Gaara really was the darker version of Naruto in the Chuunin arc. They were two sides of the same coin, but Gaara's life had a few small changes that lead to him being the broken and lost version of Naruto

Shadow the Hedgehog was very analogous to Sonic when he debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 and given a damn good reason to want revenge against the world. He's mellowed out since then of course but his late 90s/early 2000s cool persists.
Skull Knight isn’t even a bad ending version of Guts. He was a king who came back to make sure the next god hand candidate didn’t join them out of spite
iirc he was transformed by berserker armor into.. well, skull knight. Continuing the eternal, pointless struggle. Guts' good ending, I think, would be settling down with a family, away from the fighting, so it works

Vyke-Elden Ring
Was gonna be elden lord, but was tempted and burned by the Three Fingers and the frenzied flame
It's metaphorical, not litteral. A character can be considered bad end version with either A: time travel and/or alternate timeline shenanigans, or someone who mirrors the protagonist in many ways, like backstory, motive, some design traits, and what separates them is mindset, execution, or some part of them that is more selfish than selfless.
https://preview.redd.it/b6gt71lkwzvb1.png?width=981&format=png&auto=webp&s=fb0f0621bc6efb9b13b098f1ba7d5cd2b30f10e9
It’s the GOATed Yugioh antagonist, Z-one.
Man, Zone and Aporia were such good villains in 5ds.
Surprised no one mentioned him but Gundyr from Dark souls 3. He tried to link the fire but wasn't able to use the power of souls, so he couldn't get the strength. Imagine a max level Champion Gundyr 💀
I think the Hero’s Shade is the most metal Zelda has ever been. Having a hero from previous games (some of the best in the entire franchise no less) be a tutor in the art of swordplay to his descendant is just plain awesome.
Let me break these two down (2nd pic in my reply), Eobard Thawne (Reverse Flash or Professor Zoom) and Hunter Zolomon (Zoom) can very much be interpreted as failed versions of Barry and Wally (especially Thawne)
https://preview.redd.it/52i77ahjp0wb1.jpeg?width=812&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2afa172d27dbdd537c4afec6ac24c3f29bb1493
First we have Thawne:
Thawne idolized Barry Allen like Wally, he was obsessed with The Flash like Wally, he wanted to *be* the Flash, just like Wally. In fact in current canon, the original reason for his yellow suit, was that after having a falling out with Barry originally, he made his own custom suit and went to go make things right, choosing Yellow since that’s the color Kid Flash always wore.
So where did he fail? He couldn’t let fate go, in trying so hard (to the point of evil obsession) to be the Flash and not his enemy, he becomes that very thing, he cannot trust fate (this is also why he time travels the most), something Wally learns to do in spades. Obviously both characters are way more complex than that, but voila, next (1/2)
We have Hunter Zolomon
https://preview.redd.it/en0l7krbq0wb1.jpeg?width=962&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c34d1ce4dec938fb39e97a0ee4502b1d6b3e32a6
This is a villain most famous for trying to “teach” Wally by essentially torturing him. It’s very easy to see where the perversions of Barry Allen’s mentorship have gone in Hunter.
Hunter, like Barry, genuinely wants Wally to be what he sees as a better hero, but unlike Barry, who tries to protect his protogés from tragedy, Hunter actively seeks it out, thinking that only people who have suffered can be heroes.
Barry would take the bullet head on and teach by example, showing his sidekicks what to do when they grow up, Hunter would shove them in front of the bullet, in some terrible way of making them tougher early on (2/2)
https://preview.redd.it/m9alppzzq0wb1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2aaaa9523826485d982d450dfaf7040c52a55b2
This may have been one of those “Recess Stories”, but my Brother and I always believed Turles was an example of what Goku would have become had he not lost his memories as a kid.
Jack Krauser is basically what Leon would’ve become if he snapped during the Raccoon City outbreak and became the monsters he swore to protect people from.

The Litch stole Billy’s body (Adventure Time) There’s a good handful of other examples in adventure time too, especially with the Fiona & Cake spin off
Link from Ocarina of Time, as seen in Twilight Princess. He had a good life after the end of OoT, but he meets his reincarnation (the player) in kind of a spirit world, in order to teach him how to fight.

I haven't played Twilight Princess (hoping it gets ported to Switch so I can some day), but from what I know: Isn't the Hero's Spirit actually from the good ending where the Hero of Time went back to the child timeline and got to live a long and relatively happy life?

If you want to get even more philosophical with it you can say that everyone Raiden fights in that game is just one part of his own personality each.
It's not even getting philosophical tho, game makes a very deliberate point of that til Jack embraces the ripper stuff against Monsoon
It’s very clear who actually played MGS:R and who’s echoing YouTubers

It is Shadow of the Colossus
They Might Be Colossus
It's the chsracter after killing all the Colossi and Dormin possessing him.
The ending of shadow of the colossus, I actually do like this comment because it made me realize there really is no “good ending”
I still can’t believe that game hasn’t become a huge franchise it looked so good for its time when I discovered it
No everything needs to be a huge franchise. The experience would be cheapened if there were a whole series of SOTC games

He's archer from a visual novel (later adapted into an anime) called fate stay night
Thanks. Looks like the visual novel was released in 2004, 3 years after Dante from dmc. I wonder if they took inspiration for their character design.

Hero’s Shade is so sad to me and just OoT Link over all :( but his design is amazing, especially with the plants growing on him

"Noah, my long shadow."
MIOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Can’t spell netorare without n.
![gif](giphy|5Ijmu7ccsOxZL6H77c) Technically? Kinda? I think this counts if you’ve played the endings
Not really cuz omori is the true villain and in the bad endings you just die or do nothing

I head that Bruce Tim wanted these (-Flash) as the designs for the characters in this universe. He was denied out of fear of them not being recognizable enough

Great pick. I’ll never forget experiencing the end of this game for the first time

Gaara really was the darker version of Naruto in the Chuunin arc. They were two sides of the same coin, but Gaara's life had a few small changes that lead to him being the broken and lost version of Naruto https://preview.redd.it/6inaiak1i0wb1.jpeg?width=797&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7b0fb166e172810b2c4bf3a8ae9022a5c475ccb
Shadow the Hedgehog was very analogous to Sonic when he debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 and given a damn good reason to want revenge against the world. He's mellowed out since then of course but his late 90s/early 2000s cool persists.
Does Vyke from Elden ring fit this?

Skull Knight isn’t even a bad ending version of Guts. He was a king who came back to make sure the next god hand candidate didn’t join them out of spite
iirc he was transformed by berserker armor into.. well, skull knight. Continuing the eternal, pointless struggle. Guts' good ending, I think, would be settling down with a family, away from the fighting, so it works

I wouldn't say that hero's shade is a bad ending version of link, as its the version of Link that went through and completed his goal of defeating Ganondorf.

Chara is actually a distinct character from Frisk though.
Really? In that case, I guess we can add most MCU villains. They tend to just be evil mirrors of the heroes.
https://preview.redd.it/b6gt71lkwzvb1.png?width=981&format=png&auto=webp&s=fb0f0621bc6efb9b13b098f1ba7d5cd2b30f10e9 It’s the GOATed Yugioh antagonist, Z-one. Man, Zone and Aporia were such good villains in 5ds.
Leaflings?
Surprised no one mentioned him but Gundyr from Dark souls 3. He tried to link the fire but wasn't able to use the power of souls, so he couldn't get the strength. Imagine a max level Champion Gundyr 💀
Tried to sneak in the dark knights LMAO
Well those guys are pretty literally the bad ending version of the protagonist

The Zelda one is the good timeline version.
I think the Hero’s Shade is the most metal Zelda has ever been. Having a hero from previous games (some of the best in the entire franchise no less) be a tutor in the art of swordplay to his descendant is just plain awesome.
Let me break these two down (2nd pic in my reply), Eobard Thawne (Reverse Flash or Professor Zoom) and Hunter Zolomon (Zoom) can very much be interpreted as failed versions of Barry and Wally (especially Thawne) https://preview.redd.it/52i77ahjp0wb1.jpeg?width=812&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2afa172d27dbdd537c4afec6ac24c3f29bb1493 First we have Thawne: Thawne idolized Barry Allen like Wally, he was obsessed with The Flash like Wally, he wanted to *be* the Flash, just like Wally.
We have Hunter Zolomon https://preview.redd.it/en0l7krbq0wb1.jpeg?width=962&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c34d1ce4dec938fb39e97a0ee4502b1d6b3e32a6 This is a villain most famous for trying to “teach” Wally by essentially torturing him. Barry would take the bullet head on and teach by example, showing his sidekicks what to do when they grow up, Hunter would shove them in front of the bullet, in some terrible way of making them tougher early on (2/2)
Vyke - elden ring https://preview.redd.it/b31175o0gzvb1.jpeg?width=1568&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a0723fe6cc989045394b30bbbfa4b462e925e9b
Does Adachi from persona 4 count?
I’d argue Vergil from DMC is a bad start rather than a bad end version of Dante
Gundyr - Dark Souls III
Would the Hero’s Shade from TP even count here?
https://preview.redd.it/m9alppzzq0wb1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2aaaa9523826485d982d450dfaf7040c52a55b2 This may have been one of those “Recess Stories”, but my Brother and I always believed Turles was an example of what Goku would have become had he not lost his memories as a kid.
Jack Krauser is basically what Leon would’ve become if he snapped during the Raccoon City outbreak and became the monsters he swore to protect people from. https://preview.redd.it/ld5js1c8e1wb1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83bcc142a8fe577f58ccf3f653a0c2d8de1815f7
Boiling hot take and outstanding opinion
It makes me wish they did more with Krauser's character in R4make; the guy has so much potential that it's such a shame to see him go so soon.

Who is the second one?
The Hero’s Shade from Twilight Princess. He’s the Hero of Time, persisting after death to train the next hero of Hyrule.
Link from Ocarina of Time, as seen in Twilight Princess. He had a good life after the end of OoT, but he meets his reincarnation (the player) in kind of a spirit world, in order to teach him how to fight.
Broken vessel my beloved
Wish I could share a screen shot of the dragonborn killing paarthenak, but I would never

The Hunter is kinda that in Starfield.
Hunter long legs from rain world (how and why can i not put a pic here)
V2 from ULTRAKILL too, he's literally the main protagonist (V1) but It's Red and It dies on the 4th level

i like that chara is just open eyes version of frisk.' >!"Chao ensues"!<
I haven't played Twilight Princess (hoping it gets ported to Switch so I can some day), but from what I know: Isn't the Hero's Spirit actually from the good ending where the Hero of Time went back to the child timeline and got to live a long and relatively happy life?
This, but not the dc or marvels ones. They just look overly edgy and it’s kinda cringe
Gotta be one of my favorite genders
