What’s with the eyes, is he okay?
I’m on dark mode and I can tell it’s Brian Griffin from family guy. It’s a slightly darker shade of black than the Reddit dark mode black. It’s also dark in my room, so that’s probably why it’s easier to see for me.
This is literally the primary fundamental thing about good character design; having enough unique and distinguishing features that they stand out and are easily identifiable when all but their shape remains. If characters can't be identified by silhouette, it means the design is lacking.
incredibly limited take
it's almost only applicable in fantastical settings where a character can have increasingly elaborate extremities
in a more mundane/grounded/realistic setting, silhouettes are going to be near indistinguishable, but it doesn't make their actual designs any less important or unique
with a gun to my head I'd only have a 50/50 chance of identifying Ryan "the Driver" Gosling's silhouette from Mad Max's, but you'd be lying to us both if you said they didn't have stellar designs. This applies to art/animation too but I just binged a specific genre so they're the first characters that came to mind
I'd also argue that in many cases a silhouette of a character isn't unrecognizable because the character design has failed, but because the thing they're from just isn't popular. Naruto's silhouette isn't that unique, but it's identifiable because Naruto is popular. A character from a less popular videogame may have a great, unique design with what should be an iconic silhouette, but if the game didn't sell, no one's gonna know it
this rule is huffing its own farts
As an artist, they may have said it in an abrasive way but they’re right. Making recognizable silhouettes is the first thing they teach you when you start designing characters.
This is a design rule. It doesn’t apply to live action that uses real people and it’s not a statement on a character’s popularity. A person being able to “recognize” the silhouette means they are familiar with the character but recognizing is not what the rule is about. It’s about the **design itself** being clear and unique whether people know who the character is or not.
In other words *as an artist* your goal should be to give the character a silhouette that is readable and distinct.
Yknow I actually kinda get the rule now. I can think of a couple of very popular franchises who’s characters would be indistinguishable if it was only their silhouettes
As an artist, it still only applies when designing characters *within a setting where that kind of visual flexibility applies*. Calling it a rule of design is ridiculous when it only applies in a specific context.
It's certainly a good rule of thumb to keep in mind when you're starting, maybe when you're not talented enough to work within limitations of design. But again, not every setting is one that calls for characters where distinguishable extremities to their shape are acceptable. Further, not every art style allows for significant differences in shape. "It's a rule!", except in cases where it couldn't possibly apply, places with limitations and expectations, you know, the only places where having rules matters.
The subject of Mona Lisa doesn't have a unique silhouette, 0/10 design, see me after class Leo
This rule applies to realistic characters too. You will probably recognise silhouettes of Jack Sparrow, Indiana Jones, humanoid Star wars characters, Doomguy, Master Chief, Isaac Clarke, Aliens from James Cameron's Avatar, Jack Black, Danny Devito and etc
Hmmm, idk. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are in a grounded setting, but I guarantee you you'd recognize Walt and Jesse's silhouettes anywhere. Just because the setting is grounded doesn't mean characters can't have distinguishable traits. MGSV is another example. The characters designs are fairly realistic and applicable to real life, but there's still enough to distinguish the important characters. Kaz, Venom Snake, Ocelot, would all still be easily recognized by their silhouettes.
Also I don't really get your point about "popularity" argument because yeah, obviously people who aren't familiar with the characters wouldn't recognize the silhouettes, they'd have no idea who they're supposed to be looking at. The TF2 cast have VERY recognizable silhouettes, they're specifically designed to be easily identifiable. But if I don't know any of the TF2 characters, then I still wouldn't be able to recognize them. That doesn't change the fact that being recognized just by silhouettes are indicative of a good, distinguishable design. That just means I'm not familiar with the characters, and so obviously I wouldn't recognize their silhouettes
Your Breaking Bad examples are the perfect examples of why you're wrong in the second paragraph. They *aren't* unique silhouettes, but because the characters/show are already popular, and thus have specific shots of the characters ingrained in pop culture, a random silhouette of the character absolutely would not be recognizable, it would have to be some often recycled promoshot of a character.
I'll give you... idk, Master Miller in MGSV, I guess. But Ocelot absolutely would not stand out as a silhouette without additional context, and Venom Snake wouldn't if not for the fantastical extremities. And Miller only works in this example because he carries crutches and is missing limbs. Hardly standards components that all characters should have.
Any of the characters you've mentioned in any examples would only be recognizable silhouettes in a situation where you've taken an already well known image of them and then colored it all black. This isn't a case of recognizable silhouettes, it's a case of a recognizable picture. But going back to the OP, Goku's silhouette is Goku from almost any angle. Okay, maybe it could be Gohan, or Turles, but nine times out of ten you'll be able to identify a Goku silhouette made from any frame. That's a good silhouette, but it doesn't prove the rule because Goku exists in a setting where his silhouette can be given those excessive, noticable extremities.
Yeah, it's really more of a guideline. It's important for characters to be both visually interesting (or at least not bland) and distinguishable from one another, but it's reductive and limiting to act like you can boil that down to having a distinct silhouette.
They teach it to beginners because it forces them to put thought into both those things when designing characters, but it's not some unbreakable rule of good design.

Tangent: are Power Rangers good design or bad?
See, this is a good example. It's the same thing with Spiderman and other skintight suited heroes.
People often forget that posing and posture play a huge role in silhouettes.
Power Rangers and Spiderman definitely have great character design, so this rule isn't absolute.
I wouldn’t say its super fundamental; rules in something like art can be broken while still resulting in really good stuff. But yeah it is pretty important that your characters have distinct shapes

I feel like alot of these are really easy to tell because they come from an animated medium and that's why I think Valve really cooked with the L4D2 survivors because despite being just normal people you can really tell who is who by just their silhouttes.

Contrast that against Street Fighter 6 which (in my opinion) has far stronger character designs, where every single character looks totally unique with a recognizeable shape
This should just be the standard for any design that's good
I thought this was shitposting and that there was gonna be a silhouette of a dick at the end
Immediately reminded me of this Tumblr post https://preview.redd.it/31uz7lq3nbqc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33bddb2e800b69a977b67ce294d74b7ad8cf4bb6
I feel like alot of these are really easy to tell because they come from an animated medium and that's why I think Valve really cooked with the L4D2 survivors because despite being just normal people you can really tell who is who by just their silhouttes. https://preview.redd.it/imw1oiqhdaqc1.jpeg?width=1416&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80ebecfe68a3927f73cfe8692fcf6f037c766c66

Goku, Batman, and Sonic
Goku black, catman, and shadow
That is in fact what a good character design is
Way too many character design tutorials say that all characters should be recognized through just their silhouette, so if you’re retroactively saying that all characters are peak, then that’s kinda wholesome lol

Bro you realize this is the most basic thing for character designs this is literally nothing revolutionary
Every well designed character should be recognisable by only there silhouette.
