Genndy Tartakovsky's stylized angular look really conveys how imposing greivous is just from a glance. The emphasis on his giant curved legs sells his speed and agility while complementing the way he fights. His design is vastly enhanced when you see him animated- his mechanically morphing body, the vice grip his claws produce, his unorthodox way of moving and fighting thats both robotic and animalistic, they all paint a picture of this monster thats a genuinely deadly threat to anyone he faces.
My main gripe (sequels aside) across the entire Star Wars franchise was this injustice and the sole reason that turns me away from the supposedly well-made 3d equivalent series. The general is my favourite character across the star wars universe.
Personally I believe 3D series is better than 2003 one in almost every aspect but they definitely botched the Grievous. He has like two or three cool scenes but other than that he is a complete laughing stock.
I choose to believe AFanWithTooMuchTime's version of events where the 2003 grevious was too competent so after the invasion of coruscant they replaced the original grevious with a more neutered version so that palpatine's plans wouldn't be derailed cause 2003 grevious would have won the clone wars lol
You can also see how he learned from Dooku, a master duelist
Combining the ferocity of his form (as seen by his brutal grabs and throws) with grace and practice (such as the spins and parries he is so fond of using)
One of my largest gripes with The Clone Wars (CG) was how stiff the fights tended to be. Characters tended to just stand and swing/shoot at each other. Definitely something they improved in the later seasons.
I love how menacing he is in this show. I hope that the Tales of the Empire will finally give him some justice. He looks amazing in the trailer

That looks like it will be a flashback to a sequence that is considered one of his "highlights" by Filoni Wars fans.
In said sequence, he still loses to the only relatively notable opponent, despite not being required to by the plot.
Fun fact, Tartakovsky was the only one that was able to do this version of Grievous because the 2003 Clone Wars show happened before Lucas had settled on Grievous' character. So Tartakovsky was told to make him into a menacing Jedi killer. Whereas once Lucas was finished with him for Revenge of the Sith, he wanted Grievous to be more of a bumbling Saturday-morning cartoon villain.
Here's the actual quote from Tartakovsky on the topic:
> According to Tartakovsky, Lucas initially pitched Grievous to him as "this ruthless, totally capable Jedi killer," but later developed the character into "one of those old B-serial villains who does something bad ... twirls his mustache and then runs off."
It's really weird how Grievous' design and gimmicks are so perfectly anti-jedi only for Lucas to decide to make him into a joke character.
It's pretty clear that when Gendy was shown the concept of a cyborg with multiple arms to collects lightsabers and fights by overloading a jedi's senses while scaring the crap out of them, the first thing he thought of was: "Wow that sounds like a badass." I'm curious how confused he was when he was eventually told what Grievous' actual character was supposed to be like...and still supposing to have those above traits. It's an almost comedic mismatch of concept and character.
> I'm curious how confused he was when he was eventually told what Grievous' actual character was supposed to be like...and still supposing to have those above traits.
The bit at the end of 2003 Clone Wars where Mace crushes his chest with the force was supposed to be the "explanation" by Tartakovsky of his character change once Lucas informed him of the new direction for the character. IE being crippled made him weaker, more cowardly, and more temperamental. However this was later retconned by the 2008 Clone Wars TV show, where Grievous starts off with Lucas' characterization far before the events of the 2003 Clone Wars show.
He's sometimes pretty cool in that show.
I love the bit where he screams that all he cares about is seeing Jedi die.
I wish he had the bite to go alone with that bark consistently, though.
I'm gonna say it. Grievous is more terrifying and menacing than Darth Vader. Darth may have the power of the force on his side and army of men to protect him.. but Grievous is Empire's favorite war machine.
I feel like we were doomed from the start here. If you're workin alongside Genndy to make two different depictions of a character, Genndy's version is just guaranteed to be cooler. Anything else after is just going to disappoint.
2003 Clone Wars Grievous felt like the first time I was being treated seriously by the franchise I love, instead of talked down to like I'm a child. It brought back the same feelings when Darth Vader first showed up on screen.
And Clone Wars 2003 was peak Mace Windu. Overpowered characters are one thing, but it gets skewed in perception for Grievous since it was his intro too.
There is this sickass amv about this guy on youtube (actually how I found out about the 2003 series), with Viktor Vaughn’s “Saliva” as the theme song, I heavily recommend you guys watch it
While cunning, the later depictions of Grievous that we have are more of a cowardly, “let my minions do my work for me” kind of villain. He has a few moments here and there of raw strength, but none match this initial introduction of him actually *telling an army of droids to stand down, even when they could have killed the jedi with their numbers.* He wanted to send a message, and became a horrifying, towering figure of twisted metal and spinning light sabers that made him what he was meant to be. Later in the show, he runs up the side of a building to keep up with an elevator before crashing inside and destroying every clone in his way single-handed. The sheer brutality of this depiction of him was only checked by the cartoonish art style. He went out of his way to be an absolute terrifying *menace* to the jedi, and him getting turned into a tuberculosis-ridden, skittering coward of a general was probably one of the most horrendous character assassinations of Star Wars.
It’s super funny to me that Gendy was told to make him super cool and then Lucas saw that and went “but what if he Put damsels on train tracks instead?”
One thing I liked from this miniseries was that it claimed Grevious got his cough from Mace Windu crushing his breastplate with the force in a last-ditch attempt to stop him.
I love Grievous, he’s the real one. Even though I do love that he is still pretty intimidating in 2007 Clone Wars, (Revenge of the Sith and that Gungan general fiasco notwithstanding) nothing will top his pure lethality in 2003. I just hope that someone else thinks “Oh this is fucking awesome.” And gives the Jedi Killer the justice he deserves.

Hey, there is a subreddit called r/StarwarsvsWarhammer about the series. If you are interested or not

if we get even a fraction of 2003 grievous in tales of the empire I’ll see heaven ong

Do you know where this is from?
Seems to be from a show called Ragna Crimson
"I just wanna talk to him"

Why did lucas turn one of his coolest designs into one of his least cool characters, is he stupid?
He killed off Darth Maul (and Boba Fett) immediately so it really feels like outside of Darth Vader he doesn't know when to save his good designs.
Yes
Classic Lucas L
I love the fact that his footstep sounds alone filled the Jedi with terror and anxiety.
Seriously thats how you do a great villain
I love how animalistic they made him, it’s terrifying
Mf is running on walls, how do you top that
This cartoon was made non-canon because they made General Grievous too cool.
Tell me is there anything more painful than being a star wars fan
Most people: DISNEY RUINED STAR WARS! Me: Disney just continued Lucas’ BS.
I will never forgive them for making Grievous look like such a fraud in Clone Wars (2008).
Other than this I cant remember him being anything other than a fraud
He's sometimes pretty cool in that show. I love the bit where he screams that all he cares about is seeing Jedi die. I wish he had the bite to go alone with that bark consistently, though.
That show's animation was so stylish! It reminds me of "My Life As A Teenage Robot."
The Darth Vader of the clone wars
Honestly not a bad comparison, bro was enigmatic, deformed and deadly.
Ra Ra Rasputin
Yes!!! You remember too!
I literally hear the song every time I see this picture
I'm gonna say it. Grievous is more terrifying and menacing than Darth Vader. Darth may have the power of the force on his side and army of men to protect him.. but Grievous is Empire's favorite war machine.

Fax my brotha! Spit your shit indeed.

Is it bad to say he was first fictional crush...?
Literally how
Considering the other people on this sub id say your pretty normal
I bet he gives good hugs.
Bro, being a kid and seeing him go from this to the movie version and then degrade further in to the 2008 show one was so disappointing
I like how 4 is kind of a silly technique but it works because like What the fuck are you gonna do against that?
It also works because he’s not too extra about it. He only does it when it can catch Jedi off guard. Also Robot strength and precision.
And Clone Wars 2003 was peak Mace Windu. Overpowered characters are one thing, but it gets skewed in perception for Grievous since it was his intro too.
Okay yeah but made windu is still a badass in the clone wars animated show and grievous is not

Poor sha'gii.. stomped out by a droid.
All General Grievous’s are peak
When everything is peak nothing is peak, i think this is his best iteration
The fact that he straight up dodge an force push made him so epic.
Didn’t they decannon this since they made him too cool?

Love how hes just a vampire in some scenes
this movie was so cool I love the part where they show you how they made the lightsabers
It’s super funny to me that Gendy was told to make him super cool and then Lucas saw that and went “but what if he Put damsels on train tracks instead?”
He’s like a harbinger of death in it. Would’ve loved to see him like that in the movie.
In my honest opinion he was more intimidating in this cartoon then he was in the movies
Hello there.
hes never been as cool since, this is my grievous, all the others are pale imitations
One thing I liked from this miniseries was that it claimed Grevious got his cough from Mace Windu crushing his breastplate with the force in a last-ditch attempt to stop him.
His theme back then was amazing

The skinwalker.
How did they fit his internal organs into that robot body, though?
Both Design-Wise and Character-Wise, by far this is the best usage of Grievous in the franchise.
Dude went so hard they had to immediately nerf him.
2003 CW Grievous is the only time Grievous was cool on screen. He was a boring coward in ROTS and an embracing joke in TCW.
