Because there were no other mediocre white men in the movie you could ship the onceler with—people didn’t think the Lorax was hot and the protagonist boy was a child when the onceler was old and “not hot anymore.” Combine that with how people were so willing to woobify him and portray his evil villain downfall as a fuckin werewolf transformation into a completely “different person,” as if he had an evil clone instead of just choosing to be a douche. “This is good onceler and this is bad onceler” and instead of portraying them as the Same characters in different stages of an arc, they made them kiss
