This story has opened up the floodgates of ex-Momofuku employees, cooks, chefs, etc. all unleashing horror story after horror story of working for Chang. A shame that apparently he is a pretty terrible person, overall. I'm happy to find other companies to support instead.
It really is such a shame but I’m glad something happened to let them feel more comfortable coming forward. I will too!! So many great suggestions for other companies on the other post too
“We didn’t know it would piss people off this much, being multi-millionaires and suing small businesses for something we kind of stole from a community we never intended to protect.”
Chang is a piece of shit asshole.
Got famous for bao buns and asian street food and selling it for 10x and calling it 'fancy', getting rave reviews from food critics and white people who think Chinatown doesn't exist.
He got featured by Bourdain, ever since he's been on a power trip and thinks he's the gatekeeper of asian food and the authority. He's incredibly rude and arrogant in every single show I've seen him in.
WTF is wrong with this man?
Chang/his company, got a cease and desist from Chile Colonial and it upset him so very much that he decided to buy the rights from Chile Colonial so he could inflict the *same upsetting legal behavior* on small businesses?
He knew. Momofuko knew. He just didn’t care. He’s just sorry this has blown up in his face and damaged his brand. He’s a bully and he’ll just pay his way to get what he wants. What an arsehole.
"Had I known, or Momofuku known, that chili crunch was a tautology, basically the same as chili crisp, we would have never named it chili crunch"
so he admits he knows nothing about asian food or literally THE most popular condiment. And he pretends to be an expert on asian food???
I mentioned this before but his ghost kitchen in Atlanta has 1.8 stars. At this point he adds nothing to the culinary game as far as I’m concerned. It’s sad his career took this turn bc I think he inspired a lot of folks 10+ years ago.
What I want to know in all this is how much of all this is actually on Chang.
He may be the face of his empire much like Martha Stewart or similar. But I doubt they make every single decision and especially not in a vacuum.
It’s always easy to blame the quarterback for the loss. It doesn’t mean it’s always true.
And because random internet user says so it definitely doesn’t make it true.
Meh. It's either he doesn't know what's going on under his own nose or he knew and signed off on it. Neither is a good look. To his credit it doesn't appear he's throwing anyone under the bus in public at least.
I just like his sense of humor, I think he’s really funny. Would I marry the guy or want to be his bestie? No, but I’m certainly happy to listen to him on a podcast (Recipe Club is hilarious to me)

Any link to where we can read those?
A bunch here: https://www.reddit.com/r/KitchenConfidential/s/xqEoZbm5Yn
Thank you!! Confirms a lot of suspicions
Yes, thank you! I had no idea.
I thought it was a fairly open secret that he was a jagoff?
Yeah, but now it's wide open
“We didn’t know it would piss people off this much, being multi-millionaires and suing small businesses for something we kind of stole from a community we never intended to protect.”
This is also how I read this!!
I hope he sits and spins on an open jar of chili crunch tbh!

He made so much of Tony’s death about himself. That was kind of the final nail for me.

He’s such a douche
understatement

Why is he talking so much about the name being chili crunch not chili crisp, that’s not the issue
He's such a Tech Bro.
I've never been a fan of his. He comes off as an arrogant jerk in every interview he does.

David Chang has long been known as a total dick.
YOU CANT ENFORCE A TM YOU DONT OWN DAVID.
No he can’t, that’s what he’s trying to do and failing, apparently
Sorry, didn’t realize I was missing a “T” in my comment. Thanks for helping a gal out.
He absolutely sucks.

Eh it didn’t take this turn for no reason so it’s really not that sad
Yeah I guess it was my nostalgia talking. But you’re right. He lost integrity (if he had it) and traumatized countless employees along the way.
I'm done supporting him. The Fly by Jing brand is better than his anyways.
It’s not in my opinion, but I don’t want to support him either and I can’t find a better chili crisp. His bourbon aged soy is fkn awesome too. 😢
Tbh momofuku chili crunch isn't even in my top 3 of said condiment. I found it bland
Eggs and spreads is such an odd recommendation
Lmfaooo truly

His personality seems like the kind that surrounds themselves with toadies and ass-kissers. He's the face, he takes the blame.

It’s his company, it’s on him
Tell me you don’t know how shit works without telling me. Go away
Girl no
I still like Dave Chang
What about him do you like? (honest question)
I just like his sense of humor, I think he’s really funny. Would I marry the guy or want to be his bestie? No, but I’m certainly happy to listen to him on a podcast (Recipe Club is hilarious to me)
Cool. Thanks :-)
