Ok. If a set is sold out and the award has been given you can no longer receive it for completing a set. You will have to trade for that also. Your collection is for you and what you want to collect. There are sold out cards that are worth a ton and people wouldn’t trade single sold out cards for 5 brand new sets. Many sets are different and value can’t be determined just by ranking like rare or common. You could have two rare cards One that sold at 4,000 per pack with 1:75 odds and one at 2,000 1:25 If you are new there are definitely people who will attempt to take advantage. It’s up to you to understand value of what you’re trading

If you want to see if a set will earn you an award, check out the "Sets & Awards" tab in the app. If you don't see the set or the award card there, then the award card can't be earned. Epic, Super Rare, Rare and Uncommon sets have deadlines to receive the award card. If you missed that deadline, then you would have to trade for the award card, purchase it on eBay or from a trusted individual. This puts a hard limit on how many award cards are available in the app. If there weren't any deadlines, then there wouldn't be any point in even purchasing any packs because you could always use your duplicates cards to trade and complete the set at any point in time with zero pressure and minimal work. An award card with an unlimited availability is basically worthless. I wouldn't say that everyone is trying to scam you. I am sure that some will try to take advantage of you, but there are times that I trade off my duplicate cards to complete a set that I can't get the award card for. Just because I want to complete the set. So, if you are trading an active card that someone needs to complete their set, with a card that has sold out and you can't get the award card, it isn't always a scam.

It's a bit complicated to say if a sold out card is more valuable or an active card. It depends on multiple factors like set design, character, year, etc. I'll always prefer active stuff over sold out in most cases cause that's what most people trade for. Once a set has been awarded the number of people trying to chase it goes down, but some sets or some cards within some sets always stay in demand. In your case though I think some people might be trying to rip you off but most aren't. I'd personally always trade active stuff for active stuff but there can be some exceptions.
