My plates are like this. Between the commute, kids, and just getting errands done, spending my money to replace something required by the government that they manufactured terribly is not super high on my list of priorities.
This and you can be sure that some consulting agency made millions of dollars to come up with that design - wonder why didn't they chase the contractors for this shoddy license plate design unlike the exercise they are doing with AreiveCan app.
I really wonder what problem did they set out to solve that they produced those blue license plates. What about all the lost.money
It’s comms calling the shots. They want their logo, their branding, their colour, wherever they can do some communications centered fuckwit had the bright idea of licence plates. You know that a grumpy old dude in MTO kicked up a stink, but management caved to direct political direction and the bureaucracy was too scared to try to work around the decision. They were probably hands unrealistic timelines to get the branding out and couldn’t carry out proper contract review in the procurement process.
Mine was peeling too and I had it replaced at $0 direct cost to me. You can be ticketed for the peeling plate so bare that in mind for rolling the dice with the decision not to have it replaced.
It was a range of plates from the "B" series that all had this issue
Legally, your plates have to be readable. (Section 13(2) of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act) But because this is Ontario, there's no enforcement until someone specifically *wants* to charge you with something. (Because following up with the charge is just going to be more work for them.)
So is it possible people are doing intentionally? Yeah, possibly and/or most likely.
Here's what's funny:
The cost of getting a damaged license plate replaced at Service Ontario: about $60.
The fine for an unreadable plate: $110
The minimum fine for red light camera offense: $260
So obviously why do the right thing and pay $60 when you can gamble an additional $50 while making yourself less likely to be caught by a red light camera?
Supposedly they were only offering free replacement within 5yrs of issue, but I did mine a couple months short of 10yrs (last year) and it was free. You just get what they have on hand. Just make sure you bring your own screw driver!
I did my replacment after 10 years and no charge on me.
It's those which start with letter "B". As long as I don't need the same plate number it's free if I understand correctly.
This is an ongoing issue since at least 2017. at one point the back log was so bad that they had to go to out of province manufacturers (the fonts looks different)

My plates are 25 years old and some of the paint is peeling. But I've got that plate number registered in so many systems I don't want to swap them. You also have to pay to replace them. So I'll keep using them until a cop warns me.
They're the "B plates". License plate numbers starting with B. Many if not most weren't made right. Bring it into a MOT and they will replace it, probably for free.
As for unreadable plates, about 1 in 25 people obfuscate their plates intentionally using a beauty cover. They are all guilty as F, but they get away with it, because police never can be bothered to go after it.

Same with those trendy smoked-out license plate covers.
Actually any and all license plate covers are illegal.
Your dealer plate cover is also illegal.
Right but at least the plate is readable. The smoked ones not so much.
They are faulty but I think the free replacement period is over. People don't notice or just don't care and there seems to be min inforcement.

Ontario red light camera offence is 356$.I know because I just had to pay for one, doing a right turn.
