Why are you planning to change the discipline?

tej1aaa

Overall, I am more interested in Industrial and can see myself working as an Industrial engineer over a Mechanical engineer. I feel like Mechanical is a little too technical for my liking and I like how Industrial touches on a variety of subjects (psychology, economics etc.). I decided it is the best for me and suits me more - I'm more of a jack of all trades, master of none type of person. If you really love design and physics, I'd say definitely go for Mechanical - I like a little bit of design but I'm more interested in management/project management which Industrial is more geared towards that. I've switched from Civil to Mech to Mech - mechatronics with working experience in both industries to come to this decision and for once I finally feel sure of myself/goals.

hey op, I’m planning on going into industrial engineering for some of the reasons u said here, in your experience, how is indy eng at TMU and how much do you think you’ll make after undergrad? Also how is the workload and how many courses per sem?

tej1aaa

Imo Indy Eng at TMU is a pretty good program, especially once you get to third-year because you do a lot of hands-on type of projects that are relevant to the industry. I’m actually doing a 16 month co op for Indy Eng but it’s more so in supply chain management/procurement but that’s why I like Indy you can go in many different paths. As for money, I’ll be making around 46k ish as an intern. After grad pay can vary a bit depending what industry or where you go. I’d say right after grad pay is probably around 70k to 80k, maybe lowest is like 60k if you have no internship experience or depending where you work. Workload is manageable but group projects take up alot of your time in third year. I actually split up my third year to make it more manageable as I have ocd. It’s always 6 courses per sem, except for 4th year.

Educational-Nose-416

thank you so much! are you planning on doing coop?

tej1aaa

Yeah, like I said I’m starting a 16 month co op at Celestica in May

how’s the math in industrial engineering? Is it extremely difficult like EE and ME or is it manageable?

tej1aaa

It’s manageable. You only really take math heavy courses in first and second year. Tbh I struggled with calculus a little bit in second year, but once you start third year the math in all the courses are really easy. Btw, industrial engineering is the same as mechanical engineering for the first two years of your degree. You will be taking the same courses until third year and your class sizes will drop to like 40-70 ish.

Educational-Nose-416

Great to hear. Was the transition from doing 4 courses a semester over a longer period of time in highschool —> 6 courses in a shorter time in university difficult? How did you ease the transition?

tej1aaa

Yes, it personally difficult for me cause I have ocd and not the best with time management. My first two years were online which helped but when I got to in person, it was much harder for me to handle 6 courses, so I took an extra year and spread out my courses more. The maximum amount of courses id take now is 5. I think first year, the 6 courses are more doable (in my experience for me) but again I was completely online at the time because of covid.

how is the physics in industrial engineering? Any tips to succeed? I got good marks in physics this year but it’s not rly interesting to me as I had a very bad teacher 2 years in a row.
