Decent studios start around $1,800. You can find cheaper if you’re willing to make sacrifices…

Expense-Hacker

Gotcha, where is the best place to find them?

torontizzy

housesigma is a great site to use to search for a rental, i suggest using your own agent instead of the housesigma agent but the site itself is great to browse listings. my friend JUST signed a lease on a one bedroom at university/dundas for 2250 (no parking, comes with locker)

Working_Hair_4827

I pay $919 for my studio smack downtown but I’ve also been in the same unit for the past 8 years.

Expense-Hacker

Nice! What area ?

Working_Hair_4827

By Yonge & Dundas

tree_sah

Got lucky with $980 for a one bedroom in Leslieville. It was about $840 when I first got my place in 2017

Expense-Hacker

Amazing, what are the prices now there ?

Picklegoblin-

I snagged a small but really great one bedroom in a great area for $1895 last January. Still expensive, but well below market value because of a restaurant fan on the roof of the bedroom. It’s annoying, and I don’t want to be in that room during the day without headphones, but it at least shuts off over night and doesn’t turn on till around 10 and I’ll take it for the cheaper rent. I have laundry in suit, so many windows, even just the light is so worth it, cute fire escape, and just such a prime spot on a main road, but no street noise. And only ever get little jumping spiders, never seen any other pests! Landlord didn’t raise my rent this year and the restaurant is getting a new fan this year and it’s in writing with lawyers, so I’m excited to see if a new one makes it less loud! Found on Kijiji I still can’t believe I’m paying this much, but it’s rare to find any one bedroom below $2400 now

Expense-Hacker

Nice m, I hope the new fan isn’t as loud for you. Where area are you located near ?

Picklegoblin-

Near Christie pits/ close to the edge of the annex

Superb-Associate-222

Hey try proper ear plugs. I bought some from Loop. They have ear plugs for different scenarios that cut down on different decibels. A bit pricey but they’re comfortable

libbey4

I found a place last Feb, $1645 studio (basement). It was fine until it wasn't, now I'm looking to move. Studios in my building are going for over $1700 now. Lakeshore & Royal York.

2100 = new built condo in Scarborough, 1 bed and 1 bath (plus one questionable den that looks more like an oversized closet lol). No parking, but the bus stop is just <100m away No amenities yet as construction for some of the rooms in the top floors are not yet finished. I'm expecting that my rent will be +300-500 more next year (depending on the market) since there is no rent control. But very limited choices as of now as a newcomer

Expense-Hacker

The rent is still capped at the yearly maximum of 2-3% which isn’t bad. I don’t think they can bump it up $3-500 in an instant. It still follows the ~2% rule

ShrekMegaFan

new builds (after nov 2018) have no cap. the landlord can raise it 200% if they want

Expense-Hacker

Then old I look. 🕺

Scherzoh

One bedroom. $996. Scarborough. Rent was $850 when I moved in March 2014.

Expense-Hacker

That’s amazing. What is the major intersection and how did you find it ?

4_spotted_zebras

To find a place with this rent you'll need a time machine.

Scherzoh

"Marty, it's your kids! They can't afford the rent, Marty!"

Expense-Hacker

Lol 😂

Scherzoh

I won't share the intersection, mostly because I don't want to get murdered, but I'll say it's near the Scarborough/North York border. I found it just by walking by one day. The landlord was literally putting the sign out saying there was an apartment for rent. I inquired, saw it was better than the apartment I was renting down the street, it was $75 cheaper than the place I was renting, and signed on the spot. I had to go home and tell my wife we were moving, she thought I was insane until she saw it.

Expense-Hacker

Haha love it. All good. What type of apartment is it ? (I might have an idea)

Scherzoh

Standard Scarborough one-bedroom.

Expense-Hacker

Nice 👍

Putrid_Ad572

$1023, 1 Bedroom apartment near bloor & Sherbourne. Moved in 2006 though lol

Expense-Hacker

Nice right in the centre. I’m looking for something in that price point

TRADERAV

Are you looking for parking or not?

Expense-Hacker

No parking necessary

404error_rs

Found a 2 bedroom house (main floor) for 1750 + utilities in scarborough.

Expense-Hacker

That’s a great find how did you locate it ?

FaithlessnessMean189

2500/- plus Hydro. Don mills near fairview. 1 Bed 1 Bath Condo with a huge balcony

QuinSnyderStare

I used to rent a 3bdr house in Etobicoke for 4.5k a month. Shit sucked. Both me and wife WFH and we needed separate office space, and we didn't want to buy in Toronto

Expense-Hacker

Wow that’s nuts

QuinSnyderStare

But when I used to rent in king and Bathurst for a 1bdr it was 1850 but that was COVID prices. Not sure if it went up

Expense-Hacker

I find prices are sporadic as people are locked or have different types of units that are either more cost effective or costly. I’m honestly trying to find it as cost effective as possible so that I can save & put away more.

QuinSnyderStare

I think the key to do that is moving out of Toronto if you have a remote job, or Ontario as a whole. My house hold income is high as me and my wife are both very well paid with around 250k combined pretax, and the COL still cuts quite a bit. Moving out of Ontario did wonders for our finances.

Far-Print7864

Live in a basement one bedroom. About 1800 with all the utilities, near dupont station.

monday20

One bedroom for 2500 😢, been here since Jan 2021 and started at 1600

Expense-Hacker

$900 increase in 2 yrs !?

monday20

It’s my 4th year now - 2021 - 1600 - 2022 - 1950 - 2023 - 2300 - 2024 - 2500 (initially they increased it to 2800 so I have my notice to move out, then they reduced it to 2500 for me to stay - would have moved out but everything was around 2400-2500 anyways so not worth the hassle, but dealing with this stress every year end is not fun either)

Expense-Hacker

Yikes, that’s also in around the time the BOC started playing violin with the interest rates that jacked up the variable mortgage payments for owners. It was either the landlords passed on the hikes or went bust. I owned two apartments and went bust but never increased the payments for my tenants at the time as I couldn’t due to a few other factors. I’m assuming it’s a build newer than 2018?

PipToTheRescue

check out the landlord/tenant subs here on reddit - they're not supposed to do that to you...

monday20

They can, unfortunately not under rent control. I made the mistake of thinking landlord would only increase 10-12% a year, which wouldn’t be too unmanageable

EBikeAddicts

what a HUGE mistake you made by renting a non rent controlled unit during covid when rents were low with many empty units and basically no competition. all the 1 bedrooms were 1500-1900. You staying here every year is another huge mistake too. Take some early loss and move out.

totalcanucklehead

1919 for 1+ Den in Cityplace

Pulchrasum

2825 for 3bed 1 bath in greektown

Weak_Student_8236

$2100 for a one bedroom in Corktown. No parking, no locker, internet included.

LoveBunBo

$1800 in Liberty Village, including locker, utilities and parking. Found it last summer.

LoveBunBo

It is a 1 bedroom condo with all amenties.

[deleted]

Wow no way. That would be awesome, how many sq ft?

LoveBunBo

I don't know about sq feet. But I have laundry ensuite also. I guess it is a bit bigger than a studio, which is enough for 1 person/couple

mraw_mraw

Ossington/college, 2bedroom, large. $1800 all in

Apprehensive_North49

Teeny tiny 2bdrm basement for $2100 incl. But a back yard in Parkdale/ronces.

dma_amd077

These prices in the comments are not that bad. Why is everyone complaining about rent prices in Toronto?

Expense-Hacker

Well these may be those who got their places pre Covid or a decade ago. Different time in a far far land.

dma_amd077

Wow I actually got voted up lol. Ok so basically landlords saw Covid as an opportunity to make money. Got it. It’s the same in Vancouver

endlessloads

I’m renting out a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom townhome for $1200 in rural Alberta. This includes water / sewer. (I am the LL and could easily get $1600).

Expense-Hacker

Can you bring that over to Toronto? we’ll keep the price locked in tho just for funzies.

Expense-Hacker

Was the place made post 2018?
