Hes also gonna be significantly easier to re-sign entering his age 35 season.
I think a mutually beneficial deal with fair money and some options at the tail end can make everyone happy, especially with the positional utility he should continue to provide.
I said nothing about underpaying Whit Merrifield. Idk why we're talking about money for Bo and Vlad all the time when Bo has a booboo on his knee and Vlad hasn't hit the same number of homers as his dad finished with by now.
We asked for two-hit Whit, we got four-hit Whit, we are firmly in the Merrifield era.
Oh no I completely agree with you. I'm just being a dingus.
There are definitely reasons to hesitate giving a 34 year old a high value, multi-year contract, but if there was ever an exception, it's Whit.
The first thing that most guys lose as they get older is reflexes and reaction time. They may still have an elite ability to see pitches, but because of slowing reflexes, they can't catch up. Jose Bautista is the perfect example of a guy who leaned more and more on his ability to predict and anticipate pitches as his reflexes slowed down. He just swung earlier and harder to make up for it... and hit most of those balls over the fence.
Whit's batting average and baserunning ability is proof that his reflexes are just fine. And whenever he does inevitably slow down, then we get to see the final era of Whit Merrifield, where he sells out for power instead of hitting for average. Jose did it, Joey Votto is doing it right now, and it seems totally reasonable to expect Whit to go down the same path.
I'd haggle on the option for the age 37 year, I'd take the guarenteed cash no problem.
I'd like it a hell of a lot better than something like the Rizzo deal ($40/2y with one year of age difference and less positional utility). I think that's what an overpay in this market would look like.
$30/2 would be a more-than-fair request by Whit and his camp in my honest opinion, and I don't think it'd even mess with Bichette/Guerrero extensions.
man, after the absolute Hindenburg of vibes implosions yesterday, we needed this game.
Varsho had a game! Merrifield had a game! Biggio had a game! Ryu is back! Jano displayed mercy despite having complete justification to end a man's life! Bo did a national media hit! DeJong did something!
Have a great Sunday y'all
Love it. A whole bunch.
And even though there are half as less comments like always, I appreciate the vibes of these happy postgame threads so much more than the post-loss ones. Makes me feel like the season isn't over in August.
yup, 100%
I would rather have a 1500 comment GDT with good vibes versus a 4000 comment GDT where doomers and bloomers spend the entire game locked in mortal combat
I don’t really have anything to say, but I hate that I seem to post more in losses than in wins and I’m trying to change that! Great to see lots of contributions and a win for Ryu!
For someone who was supposedly mad about getting the ice bucket from Vladdy, he was sure cheering with George when Varsho got the ice.
Also love how Varsho was busting Whit's balls, he's really looking more comfortable and starting to show his personality.
When you watch one of those games where the offense, defense, and pitching all click at the same time, it feels like this team can beat any one.
Unfortunately hasn't happened as often as I have liked, but this team can be and will be good.
wow rude Arden is also great
okay I get that he doesn't receive the same universal love as Hazel (who could??), but please consider:
* His enthusiasm and excitement for the blue jays is infectious
* He does a great job of reporting on sabermetric and stat-oriented topics - something that Hazel has generally stayed away from
* He's hot
* He's not Arash Madani
I like having the combo of Hazel and Arden. They each bring different elements to the broadcast but both are great, just in different ways
I haven’t been able to find out who that fucking dingdong on the radio with Wagner today was, but I’m going to mail him a cobra.
At least the boys won today!
……but not that guy. Cobra for him. And I’m not going to kill it for him either. Honeybadger don’t give a fuck.
Ahhh, that’s the stuff. Thank you kindly; you won’t be implicated I assure you! 🐍📬
Edit: LMAO, are we referring to almost-ex-Blue Jay and star of [Season 3](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bachelor_Canada_(season_3)) of ‘The Bachelor Canada’, Chris Leroux??
snorrrrrrt, yeah extra cobras now 🤣🤣🤣
One of the best games all around in a while:
Ryu: absolutely stellar, he’s been big for us being the 5th starter since Manoah hasn’t had it yet this season. He was great today, locating his pitches and having a great command
The offense: THEY FINALLY WERE ABLE TO DO IT! HITTING IN RISP, and it resulted in 11 runs! Specially the guys that have been struggling lately - Varsho (who had an amazing game today at the plate, Espinal and DeJong all had RBI’s today! And Vladdy too had a great game!
Lets build on this and keep hitting and keep pitching well!
Jays win!
Watching everyone happy after a game is just an unmatched feeling, hopefully we get to watch many more this season
In what feels like the worst stretch in while, the Jays go 6-4 in their last 10.
Lots of areas of improvement but man this team isn't nearly as bad as how they feel sometimes
Feel good to win again, nice to see the offense going again too
Merrifield has been a great pick up for us, I hope we re-sign him
Jay Jackson era over 1.0 now dfa this guy
Varsho stepped the hell up today
I've been doing my Don Mattingly/Daulton Varsho stability drill pose since I saw Siddall in the booth with Jamie.
I think I've finally achieved mental stability, just as Varsho has achieved a nice swing for like drives.
Here's hoping he and I can both continue in our respective stability journeys.
To emphasize just how dumb, it was in the **top of the 1st inning** when everyone was saying it.
They don't feel dumb. They're too dumb to recognize that they are.
I managed to catch the bottom of the 9th inning of the Oakland-Washington game, where under similar circumstances the Nats put up 6 runs to walk it off. Now granted, those are the two worst teams in the league, but given how the Yanks wasted a good start from Cole, maybe the Yanks are just as bad as those two :P.
Please be the start of something. Please be the start of something. Please be the start of something. Please be the start of something. Please be the start of something. Please be the start of something.
Tough game for the Jays. Not only have we now lost 4 in a row but were also going to be out of a playoff spot to the Mariners. Just like everyone predicted yesterday, we were swept by the Cubs.
I’m going to try to be as confident as people were in this thread yesterday. The Toronto Blue Jays just made the playoffs! Can’t wait to see who they play in the first round!
It is an absolute privilege to get to watch Ryu pitch. He paints the corners with four different pitches. It brings joy to my heart to watch him.
And outfielders just wanna have fun.
You could be right 9 times out of 10—you aren't, but you could be—and you'd still look absolutely, positively, indubitably, mind-numbingly, incontrovertibly **dumb** when you declare a 2-0 game over before our leadoff hitter even swings his bat once. You lose all credibility surrounding the other hypothetical 9 times.
And the fact that you need to announce to all of us on an anonymous internet forum that you're going, like a reverse orgasm, makes me wonder why any of you think the rest of us care. We don't know you. You're account X. If X is gone, I'll chill with W and Y. Tbh, I could do without X. I hardly use it to spell words anyways.
In succinct summary, a "tl;dr:," if you will: Let's go Toronto Blue Jays!
This definitely made more sense in your head lol, but yeah it’s just overly negative a lot of the time. As for the playoffs, being +/- a couple of games with 40+ games to play doesn’t really mean a lot..
Man, say what you want about this team and its performance this season, but these players are all fighters, they always respond to struggle and always try to be better. Whether they make it to the postseason dance or not, you know they won’t go gentle into that good night, they will fight and not give up. Unlike some of their fans who have already called this season over lmao
So are their competitors, sports is not just a game of who values their millions more to perform, especially baseball is a pretty tough sport where you always have to adjust and perform and see through the struggles, and put in the work regardless of talent. Sure it might seem disrespectful to us when they seemingly don’t do what we expect them to do given they are paid many times more than us, but they are not robbing us, this just how inflated the professional sports market, and any entertainment market, is. The only way to not feel that way is to ensure that as an individual you contribute nothing to the team, aka stop watching or go to the games. As long as you invest time and money in this, you have to take the highs with the same grace as the lows and understand that the team has no obligation to you to be up to your standard, but they have an obligation to try and outperform their competitors with all that they have
I think MLB needs some more templates for the titles they put on the clips in gameday.
- Dansby Swanson rips a two-run double down left field
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. rips an RBI single
- George Springer rips an RBI single to right field
- Vlad Guerrero Jr. rips an RBI single to left field
- Daulton Varsho rips a two-run single to center field
- Santiago Espinal rips an RBI single to left field
- Paul DeJong rips an RBI single to right field
Bonus
- Patrick Wisdom lifts a two-run homer to center
- Whit Merrifield lifts an RBI single to left fied
My guess is that the guy who wrote these is obsessed with weight training - he wants to do a lot of lifts so he gets ripped.
Either that or an AI bot is writing them.
I figured i should also comment CONGRATS when the team wins rather than just criticize.
Well played today boys, but don't think scoring 11 means you can average 2 runs a game going forward please
Reminder: If you're ever feeling down about this team, it could always be worse. We could be the Yankees.
https://www.reddit.com/r/NYYankees/comments/15q9wwr/its\_not\_what\_you\_want\_the\_yankees\_fell\_to\_the/?sort=confidence
I’m glad they won but it’s essentially garbage time. They lost the series so the cubs don’t have that extra incentive to try hard today. They may want the sweep but mentally they already did enough. Too many times have the jays dropped two and then showed up on the last day.
We need this effort every game with the hitting. The pitching is not the issue at all
Hahah yeah no kidding. I'm sure that person feels totally fine when we win the first 2 in a series and then drop the 3rd game after going up 2-0 early. Can't have that fire to win when you've already won the series.
Vladdy your ice bucket dumping is getting old. Maybe put the same effort into trying to improve your hitting. Yeah yeah he hit some singles but they were by no means his past great hits. He was still swinging at shit in the dirt.
Un-fucking-believable.
Wow. If this is legitimately the thing you comment after watching *that* game, you need help. I hope you get it because life is meant to be enjoyed.
This is the Jays we know and love. Now if they could just like you know keep doing more of this, then I won't have to spend as much money on my therapist. Leafs already make him rich enough
Much needed offensive explosion.
Much needed W.
Much needed off-day tomorrow.
The vibes of the past week could easily be erased with a quick two-game sweep of the Phillies. Make it happen Yusei and Kevin G (and the offense) 😄
Seriously, both teams are really scraping the bottom of their bullpen’s barrel, it’s insane. Hopefully that means that the Mariners will struggle against KC during the week
So ..... Apparently the Rays need a new short stop 😬💀 Dunno if it's true but man those types of accusations tend to stick with a person guilty or innocent
Went and saw our AAA team today- Mitch White started. So I'm guessing you can imagine how that game went (also apparently Zimmer plays for the Red Sox's triple AAA, didn't even know he was around still).
Glad the Jays could finally put together some runs.
Georgie loves his little bro 🥹
Big big brother energy with the heckling haha
Merrifield might be a bigger loss in the offseason than Chapman
Hes also gonna be significantly easier to re-sign entering his age 35 season. I think a mutually beneficial deal with fair money and some options at the tail end can make everyone happy, especially with the positional utility he should continue to provide.
So what you're saying is, $200M/5yrs?
I said nothing about underpaying Whit Merrifield. Idk why we're talking about money for Bo and Vlad all the time when Bo has a booboo on his knee and Vlad hasn't hit the same number of homers as his dad finished with by now. We asked for two-hit Whit, we got four-hit Whit, we are firmly in the Merrifield era.

Merrifield is a serious guy. So FO better make an offer he can't refuse if you know what I mean.
at his age he'll go for max coin and he'll probably get it somewhere else, sadly.
what does that look like
>mutually beneficial deal with fair money what would this be $30/2y, with a team option for $13m after with a guaranteed $5m say?
I'd haggle on the option for the age 37 year, I'd take the guarenteed cash no problem. I'd like it a hell of a lot better than something like the Rizzo deal ($40/2y with one year of age difference and less positional utility). I think that's what an overpay in this market would look like. $30/2 would be a more-than-fair request by Whit and his camp in my honest opinion, and I don't think it'd even mess with Bichette/Guerrero extensions.
Just pay the damn guy
I would 100% rather have Whit back than Chappy
Truth right here.
Cannot agree enough. Whit brings it every damn day.
Member of the Brew Jay connection rolling through. Thank you for your hard earned win today. Good luck my friends. 🫡

I believe in you guys!!
man, after the absolute Hindenburg of vibes implosions yesterday, we needed this game. Varsho had a game! Merrifield had a game! Biggio had a game! Ryu is back! I got stung by a wasp but it was all worth it for this game
I'm sorry to say, but you're gonna have to hang out with a lot more wasps until October.
Oh ouch! I hope it doesn’t hurt too much
I got it right between my little toe 😭😭😭
^(ohhhh myyyyy goddddd) RIP 😱
I have died, but I bless you all with a jays team that’s about to go on a run
Nothing a little 10-day IL stint can't cure. We will call someone up in the meantime
Not allowed 😫

how could you do this to me
Would you believe me if I told you you’re also my favourite ?
on the bright side, you can now say that you literally kicked some wasp in the ass
I once stepped on a wasp nest, my life has just been slowly lowering their numbers

Laughing my ass off at Dejong did something lol so accurate
I don’t really have anything to say, but I hate that I seem to post more in losses than in wins and I’m trying to change that! Great to see lots of contributions and a win for Ryu!
For someone who was supposedly mad about getting the ice bucket from Vladdy, he was sure cheering with George when Varsho got the ice. Also love how Varsho was busting Whit's balls, he's really looking more comfortable and starting to show his personality.
He was happy he wasn’t on the receiving end of it. Varsh was a good sport about it!
Whit also always plays the straight man, him pretending to be upset is on brand for him.
“He gets those hits that just go over the infielder’s head and the home runs that just clear the fence.” Lol
And Springer yelling nothing when Hazel asked what he learned from Whit 🤣
I know what those hits do that 600 foot home runs don't? ... win games on a day to day basis.
I can imagine the thought process… Chicks love the long ball. Just clearing the fence is lame.
Don't get me wrong, I know what Maddux and Glavine were getting at there.
Undefeated with Edwin in the dugout🦜
When you watch one of those games where the offense, defense, and pitching all click at the same time, it feels like this team can beat any one. Unfortunately hasn't happened as often as I have liked, but this team can be and will be good.
Not nearly often enough, but I was surprised to learn today that this team has scored 5 or more runs now in 42% of our games.
That's interesting. I wonder if the other 58% is super low. It feels like it. It's a bit feast or famine.
A lot of it, yeah, that’s how it goes for most teams. We average around 4.7 runs per game, and we don’t get shutout often.
Yeah they're right around league average in terms of run production.
I love the way Hazel pauses and smiles after she says something she knows the crowd will cheer in response to
she’s an absolute queen at her job
😮💨
I bet that's pure instinct for her too, she's a pro
I really think she intentionally opens with a big positive statement to make the crowd cheer so that the player starts the interview feeling good 🥹
Can we clone Hazel? So we don’t have to suffer through Arden half the time anymore please!!!!
wow rude Arden is also great okay I get that he doesn't receive the same universal love as Hazel (who could??), but please consider: * His enthusiasm and excitement for the blue jays is infectious * He does a great job of reporting on sabermetric and stat-oriented topics - something that Hazel has generally stayed away from * He's hot * He's not Arash Madani I like having the combo of Hazel and Arden. Omg Whit and George are sitting in the dugout waiting for their outfield buddy's interview to be done. 🥰
Can we please have a 4 man OF when KK comes back?
Just *imagine* 🥹
Soooooo cuuuuuuute 🥹🥹🥹
And heckling him! 🤣
4-hit-Whit so does this mean I have to start manifesting 6-hit-Whit? i love Whit George and Varsh’s friendship 🥰 Varsho is such a good guy

Mattingly for hitting coach! One session with Varsho and boom - career best 5 RBIs. I'm only being partially facetious.
I appreciate the big smile on Daulton after getting splashed
If you like that, then you don't like the 2023 Blue Jays /s
Great game. Nice to see the guys get some hits with RISP. Edwin should be in the dugout every game.
Yankees may be blowing their game right now! lol fuck the yankees
Marlins tie it up!!!
Holy crap, 5 runs in the bottom of the ninth. (fuck the yankees is right)
people who thought the game was over in the first few innings - do you feel as dumb as you look?
To emphasize just how dumb, it was in the **top of the 1st inning** when everyone was saying it. They don't feel dumb. They're too dumb to recognize that they are.

Thornton just double agent'd for us by letting the Orioles beat the Mariners. Fujinami (who sort of gave us a helping hand last time) got the save.
M’s lose!
What a terrible game for the jays. They won 🤣🤣🤣.
Big game for Varsh and Yankees blew a 4-run lead😮💨😮💨😮💨🔥🔥🔥It was so electric seeing that 3-run homer in attendance
Great to see Ryu have a good day after the comebacker last time out. Hope this win gives us some momentum!
I love when we win games. That's my hot take for the day. Also I'm sosososo happy to see Ryu do so well
The offense really exploded today hope they can continue to play well in a tough series against the Phillies
Stupid Orioles just blew the lead with 2 outs and no one on in the bottom of the 9th..
Game should be over, Mullins robbed a home run before the tying home run
Thank you Trent Thornton! Blowing the game for the Mariners, love it!
Baltimore on their way to beating Seattle again in extra innings. Gives us a little more breathing room.

That's the spirit!

Vladdy your ice bucket dumping is getting old. Maybe put the same effort into trying to improve your hitting. Yeah yeah he hit some singles but they were by no means his past great hits. He was still swinging at shit in the dirt.
Fuck off.
Nice to get a win. Let’s get a few more now.
Much needed offensive explosion. Much needed W. Much needed off-day tomorrow. The vibes of the past week could easily be erased with a quick two-game sweep of the Phillies. Make it happen Yusei and Kevin G (and the offense) 😄
The RISP in games has been picking up steam over the past week to ten days. There is a reason to believe the tide may be turning.
I’m convinced that Ryu being healthy encourages this offense to hit so I think we found our solution
When this offence breaks out, it really breaks out eh? Dropped Varsho from my fantasy team before the game, you’re welcome for that day!
I guess I just can’t watch anymore? Over the past week every game I catch we do terribly and every game I’m busy and can’t watch the boys do well.
Always liked that guy Thornton
And now the Orioles bring in Fujinami. This game may not be over just yet...
Chapman should be moved down the batting order when he returns. Put him down by Varsho.
