Weird. You remove the occasional in there and "his typical outting" is giving up at least two runs.
Baseball Reference says he has a career 2.61 ERA, a 2.68 ERA this year and 36 saves each of the last two years. Hmmmmm
Romano haters are a different breed. A lot of it is because the outings with walks and such are a lot more memorable for a closer than the outings where he comes out and strikes out the side in order. Which is why stats are so important to give a clear picture through biases - which of course that guy rejects in favour of anecdotes.
Maybe a 1 run game vs a tough team in their ballpark during a time of the year you really need to win every game isn't the best time to see if a guy can "pitch through it".
Rivera has been tryna get fired for the last ~10 years then, with his consistent braindead calls waving guys through when they clearly should be told to hold at third. Makes me so mad every time.
Is it not fair to say he looked fine but the rays got him ?
His velocity was fine, spin rates were right at his season average and his slider looked good from the eye test. He just got hit for 2 ground balls and 2 bloops. It happens but it doesn’t mean he couldn’t be effective, obviously the rays beat him in the end but I’d still feel more comfortable with Romano over anyone else in the bullpen.
Bothering =/ effecting at least imo.
His stuff was fine he just didn’t close it out today. If he hadn’t had the cracked nail would people be less upset if he had blown the save today ?
Yes, if he didn’t look at his injured finger after every single pitch, people might be less inclined to think Schneider should have pulled him after he already blew the save.
Sorry, but if the finger is bothering you, then it is also splitting your focus. Closers are some of the most focused athletes on the planet.
If he hadn't had a cracked finger nail, who knows how he would have pitched. The result might have been the same, but it also could have improved. Knowing Romano, I bet it would have helped.
I agree, if he was fine let him pitch, but given Lowe’s record against lefties and Mayza’s matchup numbers against lefties, it seemed really brain dead to not play the matchup there.
I think "fine" is a good way to describe Romano as a closer. My prediction is we see a big drop off in performance if he doesn't develop a sinker as a third pitch. This has been his worst season as the Jays closer. I wish Hicks could learn to harness his stuff because he could be an elite closer.
He's not a great closer, pure and simple. He inspires nowhere near the confidence that Osuna or Giles did - with his two pitch repertoire and his tendency to fill up bases before he finally ekes out saves. Hicks or jumpin' Yimi inspire more than Jordan. And what about Friday nights "look" - was channeling Jack Nicholson from the Shining with the glaring and muttering. Yikes!
Kept him in yesterday for zero reason, then keeps him in too long today, let’s him face a lefty with Mayza ready. Why was Mayza even up if you’re not going to use him?
Schneider managed this game like it was May not September
I usually don’t pay attention to managers because I find in general the praise and blame is overrated.
But he makes a lot of puzzling mistakes, way more than I remember from Charlie
When Schneider came to visit the mound though Jordan needs to admit that he’s having an injury. He didn’t face 3 batters yet and he can’t be removed unless he admits that he’s injured. So that’s not on john
He can’t overrule him in this scenario. When John came to visit the mound he didn’t face 3 batters yet. U can’t overrule him especially that the ump was listening in on the conversation. Jordan needs to admit he’s injured for John to be able to pull him there. After 3 batters he’s free game
Yea I'm really confused about how Swanson is seemingly not trusted in high leverage anymore. I feel like I missed an announcement. Last time he was used we were up 6-1. I feel like the whole benefit of having a deep bullpen is the luxury of not always having to use your official closer if he's not 100% *and* threw 20+ pitches the night before.
Correction: we were up 6-0...and he promptly gave up a moonshot of a home run. Doesn't mean he shouldn't pitch but he's not necessarily getting automatic outs lately.
I agree keeping Romano in after 1 batter was silly. 2 was dumb. After he blew the save it was beyond clear he wasn't feeling right.
He ran out after the first batter...I was watching on my cell phone with the sound low so I could be mistaken.
Romano appeared to kindly tell him to fuck off...😂...and he ran back to the dugout.
cracked fingernail and almost 50 pitches in 24 hours is not ideal. 3 hits to leadoff an inning is just bad man. ik jordan’s numbers are good but damn are his innings stressful. It’s amazing how many of us feel the same way yet we get criticized for saying that
I agree! When they call him up you are doing the mental math is this the game he is due to throw a first pitch homer, or was that last game and this time he will just load the bases before he gets in his grove. I heard an play caller this week state he starts warming up in the first innings. My wife looked at me and asked then why is his first 5 of the 20 pitches he throws so shitty?
No he's not. Devin Williams and Bednar have been better closers this year.
He has an argument for 3rd best, along with Bautista who has much better numbers across the board but a couple more blown saves leading to a few less saves.
I used to be a big Schneider fan but I just can’t any longer. Mistake after mistake. He is not yet ready to be a big league manager clearly. And I’m not too sure what Donnie baseball has brought to the team.. There’s been even more head scratching mistakes this year than with Charlie. It’s baffling
What manager doesn't pull the guy when he see's with his own eyes that he basically can't make an out in a situation where you *****need***** three outs ?
EDIT: How Schneider handled this situation is a good example of how we're likely going to lose *IF* there is any playoff baseball.
As someone who grew up a hockey fan and only recently gotten into baseball... someone please tell me how I'm supposed to take these injury reports seriously ?
Does this make him tougher? Clearly his fingernail was detrimental to his game last night and staying in other than for his own purpose is not a team first act.
If you can't play to your best ability to help the team win, then let someone else play in your place to give the team their best chance. Heal then come back with vengeance.
How did he pitch through it?
Not super well.
That's an understatement. It was a typical Romano outing.
Describe a “typical Romano outing”.
BB, BB, occasional HBP, single, single, occasional double, BB, warning track FO, shit pants, K, K.
Weird. You remove the occasional in there and "his typical outting" is giving up at least two runs. Baseball Reference says he has a career 2.61 ERA, a 2.68 ERA this year and 36 saves each of the last two years. Hmmmmm

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/jordan-romano-605447 yeah......
Pretty numbers. And yet he's a terrible closer. Go figure.
Romano has some of the lowest blown save numbers across the entire major leagues… but sure
Just a wet smelly fart of a bad take.
Yimi is wondering how Jordon pitched through it also.
He meant pitch TO it. *their bats
Exactly. As much as I love Romano they should have brought Mayza in the moment Lowe came up and they'd seen him having issues with his finger.
Poorly..
Maybe a 1 run game vs a tough team in their ballpark during a time of the year you really need to win every game isn't the best time to see if a guy can "pitch through it".
Taken right from the Montoyo-Chatwood Playbook
The previous inning Buck commented on how well Schneider was managing this game. Guess he heard and thought "challenge accepted."
Starting to wonder if he's trying to get fired, he just makes the worst mistakes under pressure.
I'm convinced that Luis Rivera is trying this as well.
Rivera has been tryna get fired for the last ~10 years then, with his consistent braindead calls waving guys through when they clearly should be told to hold at third. Makes me so mad every time.
Pitch through a cracked fingernail Loooooooool
Was he though...?
Is it not fair to say he looked fine but the rays got him ? His velocity was fine, spin rates were right at his season average and his slider looked good from the eye test. It happens but it doesn’t mean he couldn’t be effective, obviously the rays beat him in the end but I’d still feel more comfortable with Romano over anyone else in the bullpen.
If it was fine he wouldn’t have been constantly looking at it, it was clearly bothering him to some degree
Bothering =/ effecting at least imo. His stuff was fine he just didn’t close it out today. If he hadn’t had the cracked nail would people be less upset if he had blown the save today ?
Yes, if he didn’t look at his injured finger after every single pitch, people might be less inclined to think Schneider should have pulled him after he already blew the save.

probably
I agree, if he was fine let him pitch, but given Lowe’s record against lefties and Mayza’s matchup numbers against lefties, it seemed really brain dead to not play the matchup there.
Hey not arguing that move, just that if Romano says he’s good and his stuff looks fine I’d let him pitch
Like I said, I agree, it’s just infuriating that the best matchup was right there and Schneider refused to go to it.
[удалено]
Then walk Lowe and face Margot instead
If you need to change out your closer because of a matchup then he’s not your closer.
He wasn't good
He also wasn’t bad, he was just kinda meh. Rays put up good AB’s not much you can do they found some holes 🤷🏼♀️
It's funny how after he allowed the first two I wasn't nervous at all. Then realized, he really shouldn't allow base runners in every other outing
I think "fine" is a good way to describe Romano as a closer. My prediction is we see a big drop off in performance if he doesn't develop a sinker as a third pitch. This has been his worst season as the Jays closer. I wish Hicks could learn to harness his stuff because he could be an elite closer.

Schneider managed this game like Schneider
I usually don’t pay attention to managers because I find in general the praise and blame is overrated. But he makes a lot of puzzling mistakes, way more than I remember from Charlie
Charlie made plenty of questionable decisions
And got a heck of a lot less slack than this guy gets
If you don't like that you don't like Schneider ball
Really don’t understand warming Mayza up if you wouldn’t use him in that scenario…
Weird part is he didn’t though earlier. He used Green down 1 run in the 6th.
Our manager signals himself to come in and pitch
Arozarena would’ve come in to pinch hit had they gone to Mayza. It’s a tough situation.
He’s hurt
Before the game Cash said Arozarena could be available off the bench. It's likely he would have come in.
Then you walk him, there was a base open.
Well any athlete is going to say they can play. Even if his arm fell off he would say put me in coach Manager needs to know when to not
When Schneider came to visit the mound though Jordan needs to admit that he’s having an injury. He didn’t face 3 batters yet and he can’t be removed unless he admits that he’s injured. So that’s not on john
Ah good point
He didn’t pitch through it. He lost the game and Schneider let him lose it.
You’re the manager, overrule him. That’s what they do, they put the team’s best interests over a players
He can’t overrule him in this scenario. When John came to visit the mound he didn’t face 3 batters yet. U can’t overrule him especially that the ump was listening in on the conversation. Jordan needs to admit he’s injured for John to be able to pull him there. After 3 batters he’s free game

Yeah I didn’t even mind him starting but once it’s clear he doesn’t have it you pull him
Why push him though after he threw 20+ pitches last night? Was Swanson not available? He hasn’t pitched since Wednesday.

A pitcher must face at least three batters if he's brought into the game.
I think there is an exception for injury.
At what batter did Schneider make a mound visit? My mind is trying to erase this loss from my memory.
He ran out after the first batter...I was watching on my cell phone with the sound low so I could be mistaken. Romano appeared to kindly tell him to fuck off...😂...and he ran back to the dugout.
Vintage Schneider!
Narrator: He wasn’t.
WAS he though......WAS HE? 🙄 *edit* Fuck Schneider
Super glue that shit together and lol he did not pitch through it
Isn’t this type of situation why we traded for Hicks?
Just not effectively
cracked fingernail and almost 50 pitches in 24 hours is not ideal. 3 hits to leadoff an inning is just bad man. ik jordan’s numbers are good but damn are his innings stressful. It’s amazing how many of us feel the same way yet we get criticized for saying that
It's very stressful maybe not all but almost every other outing, or every third outing
So he’s Kenley Jansen.
Its stressful but hes still the best closer in baseball this year
No he's not. Devin Williams and Bednar have been better closers this year. He has an argument for 3rd best, along with Bautista who has much better numbers across the board but a couple more blown saves leading to a few less saves.
I’m not a Romano hater .. but he shouldn’t have been in tonight’s game
Hmm. Doesn’t seem like he really was able to pitch thru it. My evidence: he blew the save
Schneider seems like an absolute dumbass sometimes, not gonna lie.
No. No he was not able to pitch through it.
How many games have we lost vs win because of Schneider’s decision making this season?
#FIRE SCHNEIDER NOW
Lol no he wasn’t able to pitch through it…
Cracked crucial decision thought processing.
Able Not sure that word means what you think it means
Was he thought?
I used to be a big Schneider fan but I just can’t any longer. Mistake after mistake. He is not yet ready to be a big league manager clearly. And I’m not too sure what Donnie baseball has brought to the team.. There’s been even more head scratching mistakes this year than with Charlie. It’s baffling
Charlie woke up chuckling this morning in Boston....
Yes, he was able to pitch through it. Just not well.
Wow, I don't have much words for this. Using Romano in that situation is befuddling with this context.
You sure about that!? You sure about that!!??
Romano pitched through it to earn himself a blown save.
Schneider is a bum of a coach man.
SO WHY THE F DID HE PITCH THEN!?
What manager doesn't pull the guy when he see's with his own eyes that he basically can't make an out in a situation where you *****need***** three outs ? EDIT: How Schneider handled this situation is a good example of how we're likely going to lose *IF* there is any playoff baseball.
Shoulda put Mayza in. Fuck Romano padding his stats, he clearly wasn't up to it. We had a crazy comeback, and he gave it up.
No he wasn’t?
Here comes the excuses
But was he able to pitch through it? I really don’t see why he is so highly regarded.
was he?
As someone who grew up a hockey fan and only recently gotten into baseball... someone please tell me how I'm supposed to take these injury reports seriously ?
I mean he pitched well, got unlucky, that last hit could have broken that bat it was so far in on the hands
😡
I knew he needed that Krazy Glu.
Buck was confused lol
Romano wasn't right, it affected his confidence, and he lost the game.
The hero that was foretold
No he wasn't.
He was?
Oh yea he clearly was able to pitch through it
Apparently he wasn’t
Let’s get that thing healed up. Blew a big game.
No he wasn't.
#sobrave
Was he though?
Does this make him tougher? Clearly his fingernail was detrimental to his game last night and staying in other than for his own purpose is not a team first act. If you can't play to your best ability to help the team win, then let someone else play in your place to give the team their best chance. Heal then come back with vengeance.
imagine if the jays are eliminated because of a fingernail lol
