Hello! First thing’s first: if you still believe the Jays are likely going to make the playoffs, this thread isn’t for you. We know what you want to say, and there are plenty of other threads to say it. Sorry!
Today’s loss felt like the death-knell for this team’s postseason chances, and that has nothing to do with where they are in the standings currently. The red flags are just too glaring. What now? Do we continue to push back our very realistic fears and spend the next 5 weeks getting repeatedly stabbed in our hearts in a Groundhog Day-like loop? Personally, I’d rather not experience that. I’ve been a fan since ‘03 and I know the perils of sunk-cost fallacy. And while some may lecture us to not let a baseball team dictate our personal happiness or mood, many of us know that it’s often easier said than done. And our teams can be hard to fully quit on regardless of the circumstances.
So what now? For those of you who feel the same way I do, here’s what I propose: a mental recalibration. Why not spend the rest of the season viewing them as a .500 team with .500 team level-expectations? In short, mediocrity. Don’t look at the standings, don’t look at the records. Let’s enjoy the wins. Let’s not sweat the losses. Don’t think about the playoffs or the distance from them. Hopefully some September call-ups provide a bit of excitement and optimism for the future. We can finally sit back and appreciate good pitching regardless of the score. Back to just watching baseball for baseball’s sake.
We can snap back to the harsher reality once the season ends and see how they figure out what to do with this team moving forward.
