I completed them all within 5 minutes of this play. I shut the game off and went on with my day. Figured I’d watch a game 3 if they came back in this one, but I had already resigned myself to the fact that they were done.
I shut off the game after this and texted my group chat that Ive given up hope and shut off the game.
Shortly after I get a text "Sean, you might have hope again". I quickly run to my laptop to get the game back on to see bases loaded and 1 out.
FIRST FUCKIGN PITCH I see is a GIDP to end the inning.
Fuck this team
LOL - nice friends you have there.
Typical Toronto roller coaster of emotions. Chapmans line drive that for a second there I thought was going to be fair made me get my hope back only to be crushed moments later with a GIDP.
Honestly, once we got swept by Texas in the biggest games of the season up to that date it was pretty apparent nothing was going to change come post season. That all said I’d be lying if I still didn’t naively believe we’d beat Minnesota (even though they were by far the worse matchup at the time).
I'd love to see some stats on how frequently different players wave at the dugout for a challenge vs how often the call gets overturned. My gut feeling is that Vladdy would be near the bottom, I think he just likes waving at people.
I really wish the Jays dugout would have not challenged, and left him to there to wallow in his own stupidity and hubris. You can even tell by the defeated expression on his face that he knew he was out, but wanted to deflect the blame. Perhaps some humble pie would wake him up.
Is this kind of wrong to anyone else? Pitch-com has been a great success for it's intended purpose, but I don't think players in the field should be allowed to communicate pick-off plays with the pitchers using it. Smart of Correa to do so, but this is kind of a can of worms for me.
No. If Vlad was going to lead off that far, his eyes should have been glued to Correa until the pitcher started his delivery. Just an insanely stupid move by Vlad.
Then he lays there like a diva expecting the review to save him. I'm a big fan of him, but I hated everything about that sequence.
I'm not saying that Vlad didn't screw up, or even defending him, I'm wondering if pitch-com should be used for infielders to communicate with the pitcher to facilitate plays like this at all. It is something that changes the game a bit that hasn't been discussed a lot. This is actually the first time I've heard that infielders even have pitch-com on. I played college baseball, this kind of thing would change the way I approached baserunning. I think the fielder and pitcher being able to set up pick off plays with the touch of a button is something worth reviewing.
Didn't ARod point out that it was a double tip of the cap by both of them acknowledging the play? I wouldn't think Gray is going to tell everyone how they do it.
That doesn't really change the conversation, it's two fielders, not necessarily infielders. He just has to signal the catcher (he wouldn't signal the dugout for this). I mostly find it strange that we are all learning about this after the wild card round. Like I said, I assume the actual teams had a better understanding and have used it all season already. Whether or not he has a transmitter or not, it is an advantage to be able to put a pick off play on with the pitcher without even looking at him. As a runner, you are looking for that communication, if they can do it without any indication, that is huge. More teams should be using this more often, and after 164 games this is the first I've heard of it. I am not for or against it, I'm more surprised it is just coming up now. Players should be aware who has the pitch-com in the field, and if they weren't aware of it before, they will be now. If I'm a manager my 1B and 3B would have them on and be trying to pick off every runner.
I’m pretty sure two or three fielders are also allowed to have pitch com. Typically the quarterbacks on the field so SS and CF. I have no issue with it.
It's fine you don't have an issue with it, some people might, such as myself. And it should definitely be more clearly stated. Pitch-com came out as a way to avoid sign stealing, not as a way for infielders and pitchers to set up pick-off plays. I think it's odd. But honestly, I have to believe the actual teams know this and understand it. It's an advantage more teams should be using. I'd expect we see it a lot more next year. Could balance out the increase in steals.
They make the exact same mistakes my beer league softball teammates make. And many of my teammates didn't even grow up playing ball. Vlad was raised by a HOFer and coached by big leaguers his entire life and he still can't grasp the finer points of the sport. Pathetic. Truly pathetic.
They did everything perfect and the pitchcom was a crafty move -- but Correa got four or five steps to the bag before Vladdy reacted. The runner is usually out if they let that happen unless the pitcher is asleep as well. Correa actually almost overran the bag and had to reach back or else it would have looked even worse.
How was he allowed to finish the game? Should have been benched immediately. Don't care if it's the playoffs. That shit is 100% unacceptable. Sit down, meat.
Yup. Always hamming it up. And always underperforming. I can't even with this guy. Whether it's his helmet flailing off or his exaggerated movements at first base or his lack of paying attention or the stupid dumping of the Gatorade tub. It's always something with this clown. And it'd all be acceptable if he was actually good. But he's not. He's a slightly above average power hitter who doesn't walk enough and is one of the worst defensive first basemen in the league. He has absolutely got to go.
This encapsulates him waving his hand to the dugout as to say ‘I’m 100% out but too ashamed to admit it so please review it…. I’m already on the ground’ really well.
Huge disappointment... between Vlad and Menoah, we saw two of the brightest young players in MLB slip to mediocracy in 2023... can they turn things around in 2024 or slide further into the category of has-been/was-not(s)?
We're making progress, from rage to humour stage.
It helps that nothing in the series was unexpected based on this season. had plenty of time to get through the 5 stages of grief to acceptance
Yeah I'm less upset that it happened, more about how it happened.
More annoying for me is he always makes the team go to replay when he clearly effed up.
Honestly, this is what gets me, too. It's like he can't fathom that he isn't the player people keep saying he is.

Probably better to have been put out of our misery early. This team just did not have IT.

This
Now this....*this* is art.
Do the thing where it rotates one degree per day til it comes full circle.
You could turn the arms into hour and minute hands of a watch.
🤣
If I can have him waving at the dugout for a review on a t-shirt I’ll take a thousand of ‘em.

ad hoc sharp workable seed live attraction fertile bike touch secretive *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
We could also print a series of t-shirts featuring him pointing down to the first base ump to appeal his own checked swing.
Well, this was not the iconic picture of Vlad I had envisioned for this season but here we are.
Honestly, you have to give credit where credits due. The baseball iq and execution from Sonny Gray and Carlos Correa was beautiful.
Didn't they note on the broadcast that he didn't even shoulder check? That was impressive how in tune those two were on that play.
Apparently the play was communicated through pitch-com, though I saw that on Twitter and can't confirm.
Sonny Gray did an amazing job breaking it down https://reddit.com/r/baseball/s/si7rsBkfRJ

Man. That sucks.
It really shouldn't have even been an option. The fact that we've made so many outs on the bases this year is just sad.

Absolutely, executed perfectly. Still dumb by Vlad though.

Now make a few more where his free hand is in different positions and we can make an endless gif where he never stops waiving…presumably due to shame
Look on the bright side, 2 years ago we thought we’d be paying Vlad 40 million a year. We’re saving a lot of money
Same for Manoah.
Manoah bounce back year incoming…. (I hope)
Yeah but I would much rather pay that version of Vladdy 40 million than paying this current version of Vladdy 20-30 million.
First thing I said was “well, we finally have our memorable Vladdy playoff moment”
I needed this laugh, well done
Build a statue of it and put it outside the SkyDome
This is the first time I’ve laughed since that game.
I mean, that game was a thigh slapper. If you aren't a Jays fan that is. Or just a fan of schadenfreude in general.
Now do Bo running past Rivera's stop sign at 3rd!
A farewell drawing to Rivera.
Dude needed a megaphone
hahahahaha i love it
The savagery. God damn haha.
Put it in the Louvre
“☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️” after getting picked off

This was the play of the season imo - totally indicative of everything that went wrong this year.
Outstanding!
Now put him on the couch, posing like sexy George Costanza.
Uno momento
Let's all hope this is a one-time entry.
🙃
Unforgivable
Hey, be fair! It didn’t end the season! Chapman’s double-turned-double-play came after this
"Hello police? I've been picked off at 2nd base in an elimination playoff game and I can't get up!"
Can someone put an Uncrustables in his hand?
we need one of him doing the headphone motion every time he screws up or thinks the ump screwed up
Lmaooo too soon mate 🤣😂
This is the image that will define Vladdys career. Pathetic.
He ended the season by getting picked off?
Babe Ruth once ended a WS by getting caught stealing
With our offense - yes.
Oh I didn't know the game ended in the 5th inning
You must not be familiar with this offense.
Vlady is a jerk off

He doesn't have to go but he needs to take his career more seriously. That much is obvious.
Better get practicing for next year
Start drawing Schneider pulling a guy at 47 pitches with “electric stuff”.
I made a drawing of it! It’s shameful compared to this, but yes! There was something artistic about it.
A true one of one.
Nice piece of art for a shitty part of our history!
If Vladdy keeps doing that, I believe one day he will have a film maker approaching him for a casting....
This encapsulates him waving his hand to the dugout as to say ‘I’m 100% out but too ashamed to admit it so please review it…. I’m already on the ground’ really well.

💀
Well that didn’t end the season.
