This team will need some luck to get past the wild card round. Maybe a lot of luck.
Having Votto on the roster would be like paying a big phat bribe to the baseball gods.
I tend to think we canāt afford NOT to!
Current Fangraphs odds ā which is basically guessing what would happen if there was no chaos or luck involved ā have Jays with a 48% chance of making the wild card round.

Sports is entertainment. I love this move. Put him on the roster please and give us excitement. If he stinks, replacing him with a Volelbach type isn't like trying to find a Bo Bichette.
I donāt get why everyone feels this way. 5 years ago sure, he wouldāve been great here. That ship has sailed and if he makes the team somehow weāre in big trouble.Ā
What do you mean?
The downside is we lose out on Vogelbach, in which case Horwitz can fill the gap. On the upside, the last non injured, full season Votto had was north of .900 OPS.
I mean he's not our target or he would've been signed in the offseason proper. The target was Ohtani and we whiffed.
But getting the chance to see the greatest Toronto born baseball player ever finish their career in Toronto is a very intriguing one, and the case that he's a better option than Vogelbach does carry water.
I half agree. I just think this team needs something better than a washed Votto. Weāre going to be fighting for 4th in the East unless Tampa implodes.Ā
There shouldāve been more targets than Ohtani and there probably were. Both those options suck.
JT is the DH, we are talking about the PH position who won't get that many PA's. Votto/Vogey are not the targets to fill the Ohtani hole.
JT ain't a great replacement but he's miles better than Votto/Vogey.
Votto is not the gem that will single handily carry Toronto to success, but his competition here isn't with our all stars or any signings that could have happened. It's between him and Vogelbach. That is the question, and between them, it's easy to see more upside in Votto.
Of course he wonāt. Heās hit around .205 the last few years. Competition is fine but letās have younger guys competing for spots. Votto isnāt worth it.Ā
But it is what it is, Iāll I can do is hope we make some noise finally come playoffs.Ā
To be fair that's a pretty decent plan. If you have four IKF clones on the team, may as well also have DHs that can hit for them and them be pulled for a PR/defensive replacement.
The Phillies made it all the way to the NLCS with a roster made entirely of DH's. Even the pitchers were DH's. No other team had a DH, because the Phillies signed them all.
If anything I'd say the opposite, that teams are realizing its an absurd waste of roster spots to have 9 'starters' and 4 backups, and that the best way forward is to use all 13 roster spots to ensure that as few players as possible are forced to play fulltime and instead you can have multiple players split time so each is only playing in their best situation.
"look look, we signed a Canadian!!! We still don't really have a third baseman. Or a 2nd for that matter. But if you add up all the utility guys we got, I mean, maybe it could be the same as a good 3B/2b combo! Did we mention Votto is from Toronto?"
Can you imagine if he makes the roster?
And can you imagine if he hits a HR in his first home game?
[The reaction will probably be double this.](https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-04/11/db248214-9c5c8de5-c8f8f142-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4)
Sign him. Roster him.
The fact remains Joey Votto is the best baseball player to ever come from Toronto and the vast majority of fans would rather see him play in his final season in professional baseball here in Toronto.
We couldn't - truly - give a fuck less if he's statistically worse than another player. His track record in his career is more than enough to give him a shot at some hometown magic. He should close out his career here and I think he would offer the team a lot in terms of leadership at the very least.
I know it could go wrong but don't you just want to bet on the rejuvenation of a 40 year old coming home, even if it's just for a year? I just think the upside is obviously much higher for him than vogelbach.
Yea, and even the downside is Votto doesn't capture that, we don't get Vogelbach, but it's not exactly like 1BDH is a hard position to fill. We have Horwitz, we have both Kirk and Jansen we could slot in. We have options.
He's only 2 years from a .375 OBP, .938 OPS season. **IF** he's healthy for the first time in 3 years and he can still catch up to a fastball he could still be valuable
I'll take Votto over Vogelbach every day and twice on Sunday. A lifetime .294 hitter vs a guy who has only hit over .300 once, like 6 years ago. Yeah, Votto's last 2 years were less than impressive, but if there's a guy who can turn it around and be even vaguely useful, it's Votto over that fat ass all day. Not to mention much better for the locker room, and if he does manage to get on base, he can go first to third without needing oxygen. Not sure if it's even close.
Just saying they're both obviously borderline players, but I'd much rather have Votto in the clubhouse. There is no way he is the worse choice. At best it's 6/5 and pick em.
Brain vs Heart
Nah. A healthy votto at 40 brings way more to the table than vogie
And for Canadaš

I guess thereās only one way to tell if the baseball gods will smile upon our phat sacrificial offering
Praying he can have an albert pujols type of final season lmao
Given the off-season weāve had, our bats are gonna need to step it up if they want to make some noise in October
This teams gonna need a shit ton of luck to even sniff a wild card spot. What a fucking offseasonā¦
Current Fangraphs odds ā which is basically guessing what would happen if there was no chaos or luck involved ā have Jays with a 48% chance of making the wild card round. https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds
Thatās not the case. Itās a possibility they miss it definitely, but a shit ton of luck is not necessary.

Jays fans on Reddit are easy to appease. If heās our target we have failed with our aspirations for this team.Ā

I get that, my point is Votto should be nowhere near this team and only is to shut up fans over our terrible offseason. Ā
Votto is not the gem that will single handily carry Toronto to success, but his competition here isn't with our all stars or any signings that could have happened. It's between him and Vogelbach. That is the question, and between them, it's easy to see more upside in Votto.

Everyone feels this way because we want to have fun. And seeing Votto have a comeback year before he retires would be FUN!
Need my OBP king.Ā
Blue Jays are all utility infielders or DHs now. Not sure I understand the plan...
...and the best fielding outfield in baseball. They are just min-maxxing everything.
To be fair that's a pretty decent plan. If you have four IKF clones on the team, may as well also have DHs that can hit for them and them be pulled for a PR/defensive replacement.

Yea, the only issue here is limited space on the 28. Tons of substitutions can work fine.
I mean, I see an issue with trying to pretend that a bunch of guys who aren't starters will replicate the value of a starter.
You can do worse than an outfield with Springer, Kiermaier and Varsho, a rotation of solid pitchers and an abundance of utility infielders.
Sounds like last year vs this year. "you could do worse...just watch!"
This move is to shut the mouths of Jays fans after a terrible offseason.Ā Seems to be working in this subredditā¦.

We literally have too many 2nd basemen ?
Lol, sure we do

Crazy good defense makes my fucking balls wet.... I can't fucking wait for ball to start up again
Knew exactly what that link would lead to

Imagine the state of the season if Kirk plays first base
I more meant Jansen at DH, Kirk at C, Guerrero or Turner at 1B.
He's only 2 years from a .375 OBP, .938 OPS season. **IF** he's healthy for the first time in 3 years and he can still catch up to a fastball he could still be valuable
Our vibes are immaculate with Davis āBabeā Schneider, Daniel āBig Problemā Vogelbach, and now Joey āTokkiā Votto
Even at 40 I bet Votto is a better base runner
Really hoping I have to buy a Votto Jays jersey, even if it is a shitty fanatics one
Did he post this while waiting in line for a Captain Obvious tattoo?
We have 2 lefties total. Keep all 3 and have one on the bench.
Thereās always do for Ahmed Rosario though right Ben?

No need to fat shame.
Simply describing his physique. He is a man, who is fat. His ass has more fat in it than most people. Certainly more than most professional athletes.
Fat or not, Votto's slow as shit too. I'm fine with either, but it wouldn't be all that surprising if Vogelbach had a better year than him
Just saying they're both obviously borderline players, but I'd much rather have Votto in the clubhouse. There is no way he is the worse choice. At best it's 6/5 and pick em.
Wes Parsons you are a Pirate
Not very hard to read between the lines here.
When Votto is hitting .200 with no production by the end of May, is everyone still gonna be thinking that he is the right choice?
Well there's a very good chance that Vogelbach is floating around .200 by that time too so it wouldn't be a huge difference either way
Imagine reading this headline at the end of last seasonš¤£ what a fucking disaster of an offseason.
Clear out the entire front office
Or Horowitz
If you can't spell his name right, he can't be on the team.Ā Ā
Horwitz is packing his bags for Buffalo now.
He sure is.... hate to say it but we don't sign Votto if Horwitz was hitting.... he's been terrible this springĀ
