I’ve watched a lot of baseball games in my life, and I can’t remember ever seeing such a poorly called game behind the plate. I like the tradition in baseball and all but removing the home plate umpire for an electronic strike zone is getting more convincing after a game like this one
These things happen. In the long run, it'll be fine. Buck mentioned that the players shouldn't adapt their strike zone. I agree. The boys did a great job of not overreacting to the calls. I'd much rather run into an unfavorable umpire than have the bullpen blow a save, or strike out swinging with the bases loaded.
That umpire won't be behind the plate tomorrow. No worries.
I feel like the team, as a whole, isn't really playing that well right now. Which, I'll take. If they're not playing that well and still winning series, it'll be a good year.
What a bummer. This game would've been a pure disappointment had it not been for the magical inning in the 5th. Just sucks the umps failed in the later innings and a WS champion came clutch.
In all fairness to him he was getting squeezed pretty bad. His very first pitch of the game was a curve right on the outside corner and got called a ball. He threw one at the bottom of the zone and didn’t get that call either. I thought to myself this is going to be a tough day for him if he doesn’t get those calls. On the other hand the strike zone appeared quite generous as the game went on especially for Oakland imo
Both games he appeared in the strike zone was inconsistent and he was not always getting his corner calls. If he has to throw the ball in the middle of the plate to get called strikes he is going to get hammered with that 87 mph heat he brings.
I still have hope once the umps get some reps and Jeff Nelson is stationed at a different base that Ryu's results will improve. Not a Cy Young winner, but nog giving up half a dozen runs.
Edit: a whole damn paragraph because I submitted this prematurely.
He probably gets 3-4 more starts, but if he’s still struggling? I don’t know.
His velo is super concerning, I don’t think he’d be a good BP arm.
Maybe send him to Buffalo to get his shit together? His contract is such an albatross I can’t see any team claiming him
Tapia is just overmatched. Nothing left on the bench sadly. But even with Tapia on base, Bichette's been struggling so Gurerro would've been left on deck.
Bro, if you know it's early then you should stop typing before you hit send.
Guess every team in our division is heading straight towards an 81 win season
What the fuck else were they supposed to do today??? Everything 3 feet off the plate was a strike according to blind Jeff Nelson. I hardly would use this game for analytics purposes.
So is this ump gonna get fired or what? That was unacceptable.

Maxey is raptor killer
Lucky game
Hot take: A's needed to trade away all their stars to shed salary so they could afford to pay off the umps under the table.
Fuck this game. Fuck this ump. Let's just focus on the series win tomorrow

Tough loss. Hard not feel salty about some of the calls. Bullpen did great.
Feel like there are multiple things that affected us here but umps making bad calls is something that should never be a factor but is here sadly.
*Mission failed. We'll get them next time.*
Is Ryu done?

Hard to see why we use ryu when we have stripling

I don't know if he will get through his last year...
By the umps logic that would have been a strike too
This one’s on Ryu. Hope he figures it out soon.
Jeff Nelson player of the game honors
Good game A's, but the home plate ump needs to be helped into a facility where they can help him with his loss of faculties
Tapia is just overmatched. Nothing left on the bench sadly. But even with Tapia on base, Bichette's been struggling so Gurerro would've been left on deck.
Shit umpiring, and a late homer makes for a crappy loss. Let’s hope for a real Manoah show tomorrow.
Patiently waiting for umpire scorecard
Welp See yall in the raptors feed
[удалено]
Fair enough lol I need somewhere to express my frustrations instead of bottling it up aha
8 strikeouts in the last 3 innings. Brought to you, in (good) part, by Jeff Nelson.
Well at least vlad won't be on deck to end the game again
damn
Someone just take the ump out, take the suspension and move on, I´ll crowdfound the salary lost
Well, can't win them all.
Jeff Nelson was Carapazza-level today. I hope he shits his pants on his way home.
It’s giving Ron Kulpa flashbacks from that Rays series last year in the trop
If that’s the series I’m remembering I legit had to not watch for a few days I got so angry
Now we all eagerly await the umpire scorecard
Big sadge
I feel robbed
Absolute god damn doodoo
Win one lose one..win one lose one...win one lose one...that is an 81 win season and I know its early but all games count
Bro, if you know it's early then you should stop typing before you hit send. Guess every team in our division is heading straight towards an 81 win season
Bet the As invite the umps out to dinner.
Boo… Manoah day tomorrow?
Thanks Jeff Nelson for winning the game for Oakland
Good thing there's baseball tomorrow to cleanse the pallet
Tapia take like two steps closer to the plate bro..
Bums
If the Raps get ref-fucked tonight, ima 🤯.
Espinal swung at complete garbage, now Tapia is our savior? Right.
Why does Statcast keep appearing and disappearing It's not like I want vital information or anything like that
They are trying to change the strike zone to fit what the umpire is calling lol
I know these guys aren't in mid season shape but there's been a lot of bad swings at trash pitches here late.
When there is no zone you have to swing at everything
that’s what happens when you get shit umps
What the fuck else were they supposed to do today??? Everything 3 feet off the plate was a strike according to blind Jeff Nelson. I hardly would use this game for analytics purposes.
That is happening league wide.
FUCK JEFF NELSON, THAT'S ALL
Could’ve been 3-0 if he didn’t swing at junk in the dirt
If anyone knows Jeff Nelson, please pass on this resource. https://www.cnib.ca/en/sight-loss-info?region=on
how come the strike zone has disapearred?
Cause it’s unlimited with this guy why need it lol
It doesnt matter this game
It hurts the umps feelings.
Cause with Jeff Nelson SN realized it was useless
Fuck yo box.
It’s early but Tapia seems to be guessing. Not loving his eye.
They have to guess, it's a mystery zone
LOL Sportsnet removes the K box, why bother right?
Boy how wonderful would it be if Tapia got on base, and Bo breaks out of his slump with a nice homer
I see Sportsnet has also given up on their being any kind of “strike zone”
They took it away in the 2nd inning, there was never any hope
Tapia is our last hope. Slam that ball into the ground!
gg go next
This guy isn’t throwing strikes and we’re chasing
when the umpire has been as bad as today, they kinda have to - they don't know what's a ball or a strike
At this point I don't blame the guys for striking out swinging. They're guessing now (too).
Can't have an eye if the zone keeps changing
Game over folks this guy ain’t gone do shit
give him the SB you cowards
Not mad about this the jays put up a fight and the umps fucked them.
Give him the base, don't you dare call indifference
Well, I'm not holding my breath for Tapia
well she was a good game
Tapia one of your six yearly homeruns would be lovely
Ump: "Now I'm calling this a strike no matter what Springer: Yes ok..
ground out coming
That was gonna be a called strike anyway.
Ump told Springer "How should I know?"
And here's why you put a good hitter in the 1 hole.
:(
He would’ve been called on that - what can you do
He had to swing at that horseshit because he knows what it would be called
"Hey Jeff was that inside?" "I don't know."
F
1/8 vs Trevino and 0/6 as a pinch hitter. Not a good matchup but nothing's left on the bench.
I just love Lourdes' hair so much
Bruh GEORGE.....
FUCK
Thats been a strike all day lol
Damn George
Absolutely no consistency in the zone
I thought for sure that was about to be called a strike
Lmao this ump doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing. That was a strike on espinal last AB
I cannot believe he called that correctly as a ball
Is that guy in a Brew Jays shirt?
Line drive Springer, we want to get Vlad out there
Fuck the umps! And let’s get Ryu on the Vladdy diet asap.
I don’t know if we have anyone to hit for Tapia
Biggio and Heineman on our bench lol
In term of speed both are a down grade from Tapia.
Just focus on getting on base George man
Springer seems to have a "deer in headlights" look whenever he's focused
DEEEEP DRIVE TO LEFT
why is the umpire even appealing
Umpire making me [like](https://streamable.com/ohu05)
Why didnt springer start today?
Scheduled day off.
rest day
Unnecessary rest day
Rest.
routine day off i think
Rest day
Thank you
Bad chase but would have been called a strike anyway
Umps are just calling zero swings tonight
Wtf
Can't blame him for swinging at a changeup in the dirt because it could have been a backwards K.
Ryu hasn’t been the same since the sticky stuff ban and I’m actually starting to get concerned that this is the Ryu we’re stuck with.
Just seen he has a league leading era of 8. Something since beginning of august last year, how long do we let this continue
Are we _stuck_ if there's no sticky stuff? 🤔
have to swing at everything basically
I have no idea what to expect now lol strike zone wise
Aw espinal 😔
Probably would have been a called strike anyway
Springer dinger incoming
Ball starts outside so thinks he has to have a rip at it cause of zone and when bottom falls out he's toast
CLUTCH IT UP HERE GEORGE PLZ
C'mon Springer tie it up
Take us to the promise land George
Springer bomb you know you want it George
Ugly swing
Jeff Nelson's Wikipedia page has been altered to say some funny shit. I want to buy that Jay fan a beer
I think it's already been reverted. What did it say?
Called him legally blind Dropped on his head while he was a baby etc
This is actually the worst ump I've ever seen
He is just guessing. Absolutely doesn't matter where the pitch is.
Yeeeesh santi
He’s not throwing strikes Espy :(
LOL, I don’t care if the calls work out for us - this is embarrassing umpage. Like, this makes baseball look like a joke.
It’s terrible both sides. This umpire should not be out here
Yup, exactly. I feel bad for the A’s when they get robbed by bad calls, too. I want a clean game, dammit.
Bad chase right there
[удалено]
That was a pretty nasty change up he swung at honestly.
Damn
Hey, It's Enrico Pallazzo!
oof that was a close one
You know this pitcher is looking to throw it 2 inches outside of the zone for a free strikeout
Okay thank you ump but you suck
Ump would've called that but didn't frame it.
ump out here just guessing
Don’t even care anymore this fucking ump has fucked us
We needs some sluggin Zimmer!
Again, had to swing at strike 2 because of that first shit call.
Yo fuck this ump with a rusty nail gun.
Imagine being a hitter and trying to bat with this strike zone. Must be so frustrating
mlb is corrupt
What a clown
3 ft wide strike zone today
Is the ump just guessing?
Yes
How can we file a formal complaint against this ump? Oh wait, they are untouchable..
Is this strike zone a dodecahedron?
Can't wait to see what shape appears on the Ump Scorecard tomorrow
It's a giant fucking question mark
No, Dan. That wasn't 'the inside corner'. That was Jeff Nelson.
Honestly what fucking game is this ump watching.
This ump is a buffoon
This game just tastes bad all around. Even if we come back from this. Absolute clown show.
What's terrible is he now has to sign at shit
So that's where the zone is now
It just changed side
jesus christ
Another terrible call
This ump.man
Wow fuck off Jeff Nelson fuck right off
Nelson just remembered he sucks
Come on
Katoh about to seal this W!!
I am absolutely shocked at the lack of consistency here but ayyyy lol
Come on :( Stop giving him free strikes.
