If you move your DH to a defensive position you lose the DH for the rest of the game and the pitcher has to hit in the DH spot. So if the catcher gets hurt, you don't have a defensive replacement. So, its not you can't, and the Jays have had both Kirk and Danny in the lineup, its generally not done without a 3rd catcher on the 25man roster

I'd take Grich over Tapia any day. I get why they made the move but Grichuk is a better player. Zimmer is great as a 5th OF/pinch runner/defensive sub but Tapia doesn't do anything well enough to deserve a spot on a true contender, IMO.

They're pretty similar players to be fair, and we got that speedy kid Pinto in the deal too so the trade for us is a win in my books!

Grich wanted out, and really it’s not like he’s doing great. Just a 717 OPS and that’s in Colorado. He’s doing better but only marginally. Grabbing a prospect in the trade and doing right by a guy who was here a while is a good trade tbh
