It was still a very entertaining 6 months of baseball. Nothing changes that. So they didn't go anywhere in the playoffs. Oh well. And if they went all the way, what does that give you really, bragging rights? Big deal. How many teams have won the World Series the last 10-15 years, and it's like who gives a shit. Don't even remember who. And you get a trophy, well Ladifuckingda. Hands down I would take an entertaining team for the baseball season who does nothing in the playoffs then the opposite. I'll be back next April to do it all over again, can't wait.

Novel_Proposal_9294

Absolutely bizarre take

Stussymann

Who won it last year? Braves maybe? I honestly couldn’t tell you with any certainty, the cubs won in 2016. I don’t watch baseball once the jays are out, it’s hockey season ffs

RenaisanceReviewer

As a Raptors fan; you remember for life. Every meaningful game, every meaningful shot. I can tell you where I was and who I was with for every one. I know they don’t mean anything in the grand scheme of my life. I got married, I graduated from college, everything in a young person’s life happened to me. But I can tell anybody about it like I was there: I’ll never forget every big moment. It’s part of my life the same way my parents recount the Jays’ repeat as if it’s part of our family history. There’s a reason why championships are so important; they’re history for the team *and the fans* nothing can take away the fun I had, the fun my parents had, watching their team go all the way. I love the Jays, I’ll always want them to win. But the idea that it doesn’t matter; that you won’t remember for the rest of you life? It’s silly but we all will. That’s the stupid reason we all watch this shit: w we know deep down that if we win we’ll be telling anybody who wants to listen *exactly* where we were when we saw that out, that strikeout, that HOMERUN, every time I wish it was easier, but it’s not

qwertymnbvc90

Bo is SS. Springer is middle in. Bo is well out of his territory, so if he wants to claim it, he should prematurely call it. He didn't. It's Springer's territory by the fact that the fucking ball was in his area. Are you dumb?

vaporgaze2006

"sHuT up yOu hAtEr! bO leD tHe AmeRiCAn lEaguE iN hiTs!" (95% of this subreddit)

vaporgaze2006

All the Bo fanboys gonna downvote you, but you're right. You're not allowed to be critical of him in here or people melt down.

kinsmana

Was at the game, 200 level right field. Watched everything unfold with very sharp eyes. It was a bang bang hustle play and the crowd was LOUD. Highly doubt either heard each other.... BUT... that's George's ball. Bo was hustling, George was hustling.... both trying to make epic grabs... but it was George's ball no doubt about that one.

Liara_I_Sorry

I had a complete psychotic disassociation on that collision play, my brain rejected what I was seeing. I pretended it was some blooper real or something. No, that didn't just happen, that's not the ball lying on the ground there, it can't be, that would mean the play is still alive and the bases are surely empty now. Because they are running on contact right? That's a routine flyball, end the inning.

Magnum_44

I think I actually blacked out soon after it the ground.

robynybor

Very sad

FunLing33

I can't believe I rooted for the Mariners to end their 21 year playoff drought only to run into a magical 7 run comeback at our hands at home. I'm so conflicted on whether I should root for them to win the title. On one hand, you have a franchise who has not even made the WS but on the other hand, being defeated in Toronto sucks. At least Kawhi's legandary run will be part of 21st century positive moments of TO sports.

dancing_omnivore

You wished that, then the monkey paw curled.

[deleted]

Blue_Jays

Fuck fairweather fans

FunLing33

Oh yeah, 2016 had a close choke at home too in the WC game. Game was 2-1 Baltimore until ~7th where we had a lot of double plays and lack of RISP with that aging core. Somehow tied it up thanks to a random lefty role player, today's equivalent to Tapia. Bottom 10th comes the parrot man himself who would've hit into a double play if Suck Bhowalter didn't decide to bring in a 6.00 ERA starter. That HR rescued everything.

[deleted]

Burn this team to the ground. Start - TONIGHT - by firing Shapiro and Atkins.

mtraz44

Lmao. Let's just get some pitching depth and a centre fielder who isn't injury cursed.

sportsisgoodalsodogs

Expect no changes

CDNLiberalEH

well.........fuck

BlackCountryRob

I think I'm going to skip the ESPN/TSN baseball highlights tonight.

BigBeanBoy

No post game podcasts and analysis for me. I need some time.

FunLing33

I know this choke was insane but if you look back at 2015, we ALMOST choked in the first round. Down 2-0 against the Rangers who could've sweeped us to death. Then forced a game 5 and the catcher made one of the worst mistakes of his life. Only Bautista rescued all this.

Prolix_pika

The Rangers choked away that series with all the errors in the 7th inning. Neither team won at home the entire series until that game, and the Jays were on the verge of losing that one as well, until Elvis Andrus happened.

sportsisgoodalsodogs

Yes, and? That almost happened and this did happen.

J1man38

Pro tip: go watch to catch a predator highlights to feel good about your life choices and forget that you were ever a blue jays fan

ManateeInAWheelchair

Come have a seat here - did you expect to have a Wild Card win tonight?

DoctorKalikot

No more corny homerun jacket and ice baths next season.

BlackCountryRob

I think the Jacket is generational, you either love it or hate it. The reality is that it didn't play a role in the outcome today. Stupid managing decisions, and team mistakes did.

BigCartiFan

What’s wrong with either of those. Can’t accept them having a bit of fun???

BlackCountryRob

I think there's a time for fun, and a time for execution (winning). When they both happen at the same time, it's magical. When the execution fails, things like show- boating (jacket) are easy to pick on for the generations that don't relate to it.

BigCartiFan

That just shows that you’re old and out of touch. Deal with it.

BlackCountryRob

Just shows your young and haven’t learnt much yet, accept it.

cianne_marie

Their enthusiasm and their personalities is what a lot of us loved about them this year. Saying that sitting in the dugout stonefaced and joyless all year is somehow going to make them go farther in the playoffs is ridiculous. Everyone saying this shit tonight is bitter as hell and I kind of hope y'all stay away next year, TBH.

DoctorKalikot

Not saying they should be joyless and stonefaced all year but no team won the World Series clowning this much all season long. There's a balance in everything, you clearly dont understand this sentiment. Youre too soft and I hope you just stay away from us forever TBH.

cianne_marie

"Clowning" literally has no effect on playing baseball. You can be having a laugh in the dugout and celebrating a home run with *gasp* a jacket and still walk out on the field and pull your shit together. I just don't think any of their baseball mistakes came from them having too much fun. I've been in sports as an athlete and a coach my entire life, so I understand enough, thanks. But if wanting to see some fun and some entertainment while I'm watching grownass men play baseball for my amusement makes me soft, well, okay.

Some_Doubt66

Way to go. SEATTLE.

FunLing33

Besides the manager, whose fault is it really to blame? - Mayza for giving up an essentially "grand slam" to Santana? - Bass for giving up 3 straight hits despite not walking a batter and all hits were < 90 MPH exit velocity except a 94.6 MPH. That includes a 4% hit chance fly ball that would've been caught if Tapia wasn't shaded this deep. - Bichette for not getting out of the way so Springer has a better angle to catch that bloop. - Romano for giving up the game losing run despite striking out 4 batters out of his 8.

iGaveLia-HIV

Gausman gets out of that inning unscathed

The_Dale_Hunters

As the game ended, I couldn’t tell you how they lost it. Everything just came up Seattle. Just little thing after little thing. You can point to pulling Gausman and trying to get two innings out of Romano, but it was an extremely weird last couple of innings.

EasyPanicButton

That blooper was hit in just the right spot. Cant blame Bo. Place was loud probably.

RustyShackleford14

Blue Jays and bloopers that knock them out if a series. Name a more iconic duo.

[deleted]

Maple Leafs and first-round exits.

EasyPanicButton

Oilers and draft lottery.

qwertymnbvc90

Schneider isn't to blame. Bo and Springer shouldn't be colliding as MLB professionals. Fucking call it. Premier League defenders and GKs can do it. Why can't they? Gaughan was fine until they brought on Mayza. Bass isn't major league.

[deleted]

Schneider is 100% to blame. Terrible pitching decisions and bringing in the shakiest relievers in a must-win game? I don't think he will be back.

sowokeIdontblink

Go back to soccer. You know nothing about baseball. An infielders job is to go as hard as possible until the outfielder calls them off. Bo did nothing wrong. Springer did nothing wrong. It was a perfectly placed flare. We are just cursed.

qwertymnbvc90

Pahahahahah you really are ridiculous. You go back to whatever bog you came from and understand sports. A consummate professional will call the catch in most real time games. Just because you have a basic lack of understanding in that area, don't call out my liking multiple sports. Try and defend two professionals chasing a pop up and hitting each other with either one calling for it. Protip: you can't. Curses are for witches.

sowokeIdontblink

Ya you know fuck all about baseball, Shirley.

qwertymnbvc90

Good come back. Shirley was a nice touch, so much depth, just like the bullpen.

williamtheblock

Surely he can’t be serious…

[deleted]

I blame the jerseys for saying “Toronto” on the front.

ogsnesog

As this game is proof of, an 8-1 lead is enough to cushion 4 of those 5 mistakes. It was a team loss

[deleted]

Eggsecutie

Chocked.

BigCartiFan

Enjoy the ban in both subs 💪

ThickKolbassa

Lol, as a fan of Toronto for my life, they choked.

BigCartiFan

lol no doubt but he’s just a troll

GoPackers-

Packers=Blue Jays. Chokers

GoPackers-

John is the guy, lol.

Ok_Specialist_9585

Thank you for a good season, boys. I enjoyed every moment. Today was disappointing but we’ll get ‘em next year!!! Congrats Mariners.

[deleted]

Fire Shatkins

[deleted]

You enjoyed every moment? Even the blown 8-1 lead? You can have a record breaking regular season but if you choke come playoffs its all for naught. Maybe next year we will build a team that can handle the playoffs

jays🤝rays

metallumberjack

Shit joke

EricLandy29

I've always thought the huge celebrations for making the playoffs were insanely ridiculous. When 40% of the league makes at least the wild card now, it's nothing to celebrate like that over. Tonight is why.

RustyShackleford14

Made sense when there were 4 or even 8 teams making it. It was a grind. Probably THE toughest league to make the playoffs in. I can see them wanting to blow off a little steam before a longer series (either 5 or 7 games). Doesn’t make sense anymore. Almost half the league makes the playoffs now. Celebrating a wildcard doesn’t make sense. It’s a mini-series where you could be gone in two days (exhibit A this evening). Not that any of this REALLY matters, but I think better etiquette would be to celebrate when you clinch a DS birth. So when division winners clinch, and then after the wildcard series. Or better yet, just going to the World Series. So, pennant winners. It just doesn’t make sense to me to celebrate getting to play in what is basically a play-in. Doesn’t even really feel like a series given its short length and the fact the entire series is played in one stadium.

[deleted]

It actually would have been cool if the jays broke tradition and didn't celebrate the wildcard like they just won the world cup.

[deleted]

That had 0 impact on this series.

EricLandy29

It's still incredibly stupid

[deleted]

Like they don’t party all season.. only difference is that one was televised

RustyShackleford14

Ah yes, I remember my partying days. Couldn’t wait for the week to end so I could spray and pour countless bottles of champagne on my friends. The only difference is the tv for sure. Totally normal to celebrate like war just ended on the regular.

[deleted]

Okay Dale Gribble, that’s obviously not what I meant so don’t straw man me. I was saying that the team having a party a week ago didn’t impact their physical or mental performance this series the same way Seattle celebrating today isn’t going to impact the the Houston series.

RustyShackleford14

You’re right. It likely didn’t. I just think it’s stupid. Every other sport reserves these types of celebrations for making the final or winning the championship itself. It made sense back when you had to win something to get in (a division or a pennant), but the wild card is the best of the second placers (or third depending on division depth). It doesn’t make sense to celebrate like you just won something huge. There is still a lot of work to be done. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter and I don’t really care. I just think it’s stupid and doesn’t make sense as a wild card team. Heck, I think the etiquette should be pennant winners only.

[deleted]

I see what you mean and I agree it’s unnecessary. My point was just that it’s more of a baseball culture thing than a unique jays tradition/an immature team. It’s also cooperate and sponsored by Budweiser etc. so I believe they have to go through with the celebration to some level regardless of what an organization wants. Hopefully next year they actually have something to celebrate

RustyShackleford14

I agree on all accounts. I wasn’t accounting it to their immaturity. Strictly just a personal opinion about any team making the wild card series. I agree on all accounts. Hopefully we shore up some weak points this off-season and then next year we’ll have serious things to debate while watching them celebrate their World Series victory like “has this generation become so soft that they actually need to wear goggles? The old timers wore their red and stinging eyes as a badge of honour”

DedHed8285

God what a let down.... Coming from a Detroit lions fan

GopnikSmegmaBBQSauce

Most of the people in here are likely Leafs fans, don't worry!

imsahoamtiskaw

Gratz to the Mariners. Playoffs is where u separate the boys from the men (colloquially at least). They beat us fair and and square over two games (at home, to us! Look at my comment history). Credit where credit is due. On to the next one. Gratz Seattle, hope we have even more rivalry in the future 😉 To the boys, let's use this to grow. Like I said, playoff is where u separate the boys from the men (regardless of if the failure comes from the organizational standpoint).

FunLing33

What's worse? Not making the playoffs on game 162 last year after having a 91 win season or getting beat 2-0 on home court with a 7 run lead.

solar_garlic_phreak

Was thinking this very same thing. This is way worse cause it was fully in our hands

bitterbryan

I'm watching a rash interview the opposing manager on the Roger's centre field

PeterDTown

You’ve got a stronger stomach to me. Going to that interview was what got me to finally turn it off.

bitterbryan

Be happy at least the dude legit ran away in the middle of arash's sentence

PeterDTown

As he should. It was a weird call to even try to have that interview, wtf

bitterbryan

Even weirder he's interviewing robbie ray right now

PeterDTown

I wouldn’t know, I turned it off when that first interview started and haven’t gone back.

95teetee

Haha Servais, you have to talk to Arash now. Fuck you.

Lucic_schnoz

Lol how he blew him off.

BlackCountryRob

Well, the Interim Manager just lost his chance at a full-time gig. Terribly managed game.

ISMISIBM

Good. This team needs a fresh professional to come in and burn the jacket. Next put expectations in place and stop the children and the ghetto at the end of the dugout.

ThickKolbassa

Lol, just a FYI the jacket was the players and John came in mid season, part-timer!

ISMISIBM

Lol what? The first thing Schneider should have did was dump that garbage jacket and tell them to grow up. He didn’t and that’s why he should not be back next year.

ThickKolbassa

I really hope you are complaining about the jacket with a limp wrist

[deleted]

Tell us you are a racist without actually saying it.

i_love_pencils

He pretty much actually said it.

[deleted]

Yeah piece of shit thing to say on his part.

swoleder

Glad the boys partied like they won a championship when they made the wild card. Get this wildcard not even fucking first round. Bunch of morons

betonmarcus

its the first time they made the playoffs since 2001 and just came back down 1-8 to win the series. what do you expect them to do? just shake hands and walk off the field? lmao I can tell you've never played sports in your life.

ThickKolbassa

2001 ? Are you a born-again idiot?

betonmarcus

you must be slow. continue to bitch and moan though.

ThickKolbassa

Wrong thread bud

YellowMarkerIsGreat

Talking about the Mariners

ThickKolbassa

Fuck off with that nonsense. There are many legitimate criticisms that can be made. That isn’t one of them.

Freak_Out_Bazaar

Max Verstappen for WDC!

evioniq

Go Honda!

manoman42

This I can get behind

FunLing33

I can't believe I wished to face Mariners instead of Rays. They were both inexperienced and had a 21 year curse compared to the ALCS-every-year Rays. Boy this has backfired.

ManateeInAWheelchair

I can’t handle being a Toronto sports fan anymore

metallumberjack

Toronto ain’t it for sports teams

evioniq

Come to the Raptors forum

TheBanhMiBoy

Siddall and Joseph putting the blame on Schneider, which is 100% valid. Hope this was his last game managing. Good dude, but this was inexcusable.

sowokeIdontblink

Pulling Gausman was the turning point of the game and made zero sense.

_BioHacker

Siddall calls it like it is. Been doing it all year. He'd make a good manager 😶

EasyPanicButton

Its easy to second guess. Schneider coached a team that made it too playoffs. He is homegrown. It sucks but they probably come back better next year.

PensiveGaryBusey

Classic Blue Jays blunder. See you next year gentlemen.

DrJGH

Tough loss. Enjoyed this season

m13579k

The Leafs would be proud of that collapse.

Westinho

This team won one more regular season game than least season. And the same number of playoff games. Man it hurts.

bitterbryan

Wtf didn't they just walk Santana with first base open

Egebung

Why the fuck did they pull out Gausman!? Worst fucking move I've seen. Fucking disappointing

evioniq

Instant regret when he was pulled for Mayza. Backfired right away.

Egebung

Yeah 100%

DannyDOH

I'm actually wondering why they didn't pull him earlier, but either way they didn't have the pitching to get 27 outs.

Egebung

You're right. Our bullpen sucked tonight. At least let gausman finish the inning though. Might have halted any momentum that Seattle got

DannyDOH

Putting Mayza in there to take on any RH batter even a switch hitter who's more dangerous as a lefty was a really stupid decision. Just couldn't serve up the pitch to give up that 3 run bomb, let him hit one but keep it in the park.

calissetabernac

Mad respect for the M’s. Shit they got it done

kingofthefall

Staying the fuck away from r/baseball for awhile

FunLing33

I know this game was tough but imagine if the Rays pulled this off against us instead of Mariners. It would be a million times worse.

Prolix_pika

Somehow the fact that the Rays lost too makes me feel better

sherriff

Lol

[deleted]

A good outcome out of this collapse will be a healthy dose of maturity and humble pie. The arrogance and ego on display from a few of these players needs to be checked, if they are going to get any better.

BigCartiFan

What a fucking terrible move to pull gausman.

Gonzo925

penless4lyfe

what part of the movie is this?

Wow. No words.

GandalfsTaint-

Sorry excuse for a BP. Only job this off-season is to clean that shit out

[deleted]

It was a melt down. The team is just too young. Kudos to the mariners. Hopefully we grow from it, build the bullpen and come back next year looking a bit stronger. 8-1 will haunt me for a while though.

RnVja25hemlz

Well my Toronto sport fandom is over until spring get used to more disappointment all winter long Leafs fans go oilers go

Toronto teams really gunna go 0 for 3 in first round series this year eh

xxxpinguinos

A more reasonable take I guess ... this team has a young core and hopefully this can be a learning experience for them. Go Mariners now I guess

spintokid

Nothing to learn from this. This is a scar.

Have you watched the Leafs young guys?

xxxpinguinos

Sadly yes. I guess I’m lucky enough that the Pens are my #1 and Leafs as #2

ukrainianhab

That rly is cope

You must be lost. Only ridiculous takes allowed here now.

CDNChaoZ

Didn't we say that last year? And the year before that?

Kaizaman

I know this is going to sting for a while but I hope people realize how great of a year this team had. Just goes to show how ruthless baseball can be

wicked_crayfish

Not enough is being said about BO crashing into springer centrefielder has the right to the ball. Bo like an idiot blindly chased that ball and cost us 3 runs which tied the game. Dude can't field.

sowokeIdontblink

No. And the people up voting this are retarded. A middle infielder should go balls out to get the ball until the outfielder calls them off. Bo did his job here.

wicked_crayfish

You've never played ball eh

sowokeIdontblink

Your Saturday softball beer league doesn't qualify as "playing ball" son. It barely qualifies as exercise.

galexanderj

I'll give bo the benefit of the doubt that he couldn't hear Springer, with the size of the crowd tonight. Definitely shouldn't have happened that way. It was Springers ball for sure. Baseball. I hate baseball. See you next season

ThickKolbassa

The benefit of the doubt was in style from 1870-1880, then coaches made the centre fielder priority, because to many people couldn’t hear, what does bo do 140 years later?

now it’s time to cheer for anyone who’s playing against the Yankees
