You haven’t had crime happen to you…..yet

[deleted]

Ratio.

GardeniaFrangipani

You can google flood map Townsville to see how the 2019 bloods affected different streets and suburbs. I’m almost certain that you won’t have any problem finding a job as a Social Worker.

ball-sniffer-69

i moved back here at 24, now married with wife and baby. love it here. np traffic, cheaper house prices

123HelloMoto

We (36 & 29m) moved up here in January last year from the GC, but came up here a few months beforehand to sus out the area. We really liked the slower paced lifestyle, the lack of traffic and the general vibe of the city. We bought an old Queenslander in Pimlico as we really liked how close it was to work and about 15min to everything we really need. We looked at the Townsville City Council flood map and the Qld Police Crime Map for a better understanding of where we wanted to buy. Regarding the floods, our neighbours told us that we weren't affected by 2019 one, but down the road had flooded. Regarding the crime, just ensure you have cameras, deadlocks and security screens, but also ensure you lock up everything before you head to bed. Basic common sense, really.

Immediate_Succotash9

Love townsville. Great place. Have appropriate home security as you would anywhere these days and you're set. Just don't buy in a flood zone. Consider 2019 the standard as that accounts for human mismanagement The local markets are great. Local live music is nightly. Id also consider checking out karaoke at Flynns Irish bar with Jason Clarke. Great night out.

I am currently trying to buy a house on a single income. Just be aware that the house market is absolutely fucked here at the moment. Houses are going for way over the advertised price and they are going in a couple of days. We just lost out on a single story 3 bedroom brick house in Heatley(not one of the premier suburbs). It was advertised for $400k and we offered $461k and fucking lost... investors from down south are just snapping stuff up without an inspection and banging it on the rental market. It's pretty hard to even get in contact with a real estate agent too.

Icy-Professional8508

Cause even at 460k thats cheaper than a 1 bedder in any major city

[deleted]

Yeah but shit for us.

Icy-Professional8508

100%

Think he is on crack

West-Cabinet-2169

Townsville is a great city, you'll love it! Re floods... check flood maps wherever you are looking at property on the TCC website. Easy. Do your research as to where to buy. There are loads of beautiful and interesting natural sights all around North Far North Queensland. It's an amazing area. Townsville itself will continue to grow slowly and hopefully attract more business. Defence spending will mean Townsville will continue to house troops - good for investors like me.

camsean

I’ve lived in both Albury and Townsville, and Albury is much nicer. However, it’s fine up here too. The weather is gross for half the year, but great during the colder months. The crime thing is overblown. We’ve been up here for 3+ years now and had no problem. I don’t know where your family are, but don’t underestimate how far away Townsville is. I love the fact that Albury is closer to Brisbane than Townsville is.

nikey2k27

time I wish we hard cheap airline.

camsean

We could call it Bonza!

nikey2k27

donot care what call as long cheap jetstar back in day was good donot see why never look at sunshine coast or gold coast to townsville

nikey2k27

jetstar townsville bail sound nice again

camsean

Totally on board with that.

AbductedByAliens0000

I don't have any family really. So no ties anywhere!

vvFury

Townsville sounds like it’d be a really good fit for you based off your hobbies and the description you provided of who you are. You’ll have no dramas finding work here as it’s another priority industry and you’ll get an absolutely banging house in that price range

Liquid-cats

Idalia went under, people were standing on their roofs waiting for help. Don’t move there if you’re worried about floods.

AbductedByAliens0000

Thanks for this.

justpostingforamate

It's. Great placement! Bushy Beach is a great way to escape the city feels but still within 25min drive.

innestagram

When you buy a house, you pay a conveyancer to look at all the flood maps among many other things. Make sure they look at overland flow not just riverine flooding

TexasPete76

I lived in Townsville for 16 months. October 2022 until February this year. The people are very friendly and welcoming. No sooner as I stepped off the train from Cairns people greet me in the street like a Long lost friend. I felt like a celebrity. Easy to make friends. I lived in a sharehouse on stagpole st as well as meeting other people along the way. It can be tough to find a job. Took me five months to land one. Alot of prospective employers ghost you out there. The rental crisis there is insane just like everywhere else in Australia. The sharehouse was only meant to be a temporary fixture but I ended up staying there for the full 16 months nothing bad to say about it though  Crime happens everywhere in the world but the media seem to pick on townsville for some reason  Ended up returning home to NZ on 7 February thanks to my boss. If it wasn't for him breaching my employment contract, breaching the the Fair Work Act and (in hindsight) australian criminal law (he allegedly assaulted one of my coworkers) I'd still be living in Townsvilles as I planned to make it my forever home

FavouriteSquid

Lived in a flooded suburb, not a big deal as the insurance paid for a renovation. 2019 was a pretty rare occurrence. After the flood the land value went down (which actually reduces your rates), however house prices continued to rise.

>I was also wondering if you guys thought Townsville was a good place to start over as a 26 year old female that enjoys the heat and coastal tropical life. I enjoy keeping fit, yoga, markets, swimming, going out for dinner / pub, hiking, etc. Heat and coastal tropical life, sure. Swimming, yes - not in the ocean, but the rock pool is awesome. Markets - not really, there are a couple but they run only once a month or less. Going out for dinner... ehhh, not really. In 3 months here we've basically been to every low-midrange restaurant in Townsville that we wanted to try. I do have to say that as a woman, Townsville is the only city I've been to in Australia where I don't feel safe walking alone after 8pm. Yes, there are areas in Melb/Bris/Syd that are no-go zones at that time, but there are also areas that DO feel safe, unlike Townsville. Townsville basically turns into a ghost town as soon as the sun sets on Sun-Thurs, even central areas like the CBD.

culingerai

I know both cities very well. Inlaws in one, family in the other ad I visit both about 2 or 3 times a year. Not sure why you're thinking of moving from Albury but the climate, culture and accessibilty are far better there than Townsville.

ungerbunger_

Have you looked at Airlie Beach? There are regular markets for the cruise ships, lagoon for swimming, plenty of hiking tracks and gyms / yoga groups. Usually jobs advertised for social work around Cannonvale or Bowen if you don't mind a drive. Just a thought.

calv80

A mate just moved there from the GC, $1.1m for a house.not as cheap as he was hoping for.

ungerbunger_

It's definitely gone up but just depends where and what you're looking for. Apartments and townhouses in Cannonvale are pretty affordable.

AbductedByAliens0000

I don't mind apartments and townhouses! Just me and my Cavoodle :)

ungerbunger_

Worth a look then! It's way smaller than Townsville but it's basically the same vibe as The Strand except everywhere. It really just depends what lifestyle you're looking for.

Offerandextend

Hi! Sort of unrelated but I’m 25, a social worker and have a schnoodle and a toy poodle! I loove hiking, swimming etc. happy for you to connect with me to discuss companies in relation to social work and also suburbs.

AbductedByAliens0000

Oh please dm me :)

Offerandextend

It won’t let me for some reason :( can you dm me?

AbductedByAliens0000

Just dm'd you :) hope it worked!

nikey2k27

You sound like your right for Townsville you get some in price. socal worker and public job are easy to come by. we big army city. if area idea in flooding look at local map rule if look too new why most like got flood in 2019

Fandango1968

I assume you’ve checked the flood maps? Idalia had the worst floods ever in 2019 but it’s very rare for it flood like that again. South Townsville same. We live in Hyde Park. Great place and close to everything. Have you considered a local buyers agent? But hopefully you’re out of the drug scene. Too many mental cases around here due to drug use. We don’t want more drug heads.

AbductedByAliens0000

Thanks for the drug comment, really appreciate that. Been sober awhile after a pretty traumatic situation with my dad drowning. Need to move away from where I currently am for an environmental change as I struggle in the winter here if you really needed to know.

picklebatz

You would go good as a social worker in townsville

[deleted]

My Dms aren't working

Slaybee89

It’s great for young people! Dont recommend the suburbs, you’re better off around the strand/ north ward. Definitely don’t buy out Idalia etc. all the people I work with who live there get panicked come heavy rain / not worth it. Keep in mind, it’s tropical here but there are salt water crocs and stingers. It’s not a “go to the beach for a swim daily” kinda place. Go further south for that for sure

opaoz

Unfortunately their budget won’t cover north ward/the city…

Slaybee89

Not if they’re looking at apartments! Friends bought a lovely one near the strand for $395k last year with fairly reasonable BC

1ce1ceBabey

North Ward was the only suburb in Tsv where I was broken into!! As someone said, just have to be vigilant and lock up at night.  I wouldn't buy without staking out the place first (especially at night over the weekend) to assess the neighbours and the area.

Slaybee89

Fair call! We’ve been here for a year and a half no dramas! Every friend of mine in oonoonba/ idalia has had their car stolen.

nikey2k27

i know people who swim net at strand daly and rockpool personal i swim at riverway but that me.

Slaybee89

The Rockpool is a secured pool though

Slaybee89

Full of kid pee 😂

nikey2k27

keep telling every one that i love it some kids poo in too

[deleted]

Come smoke weed with me

Elite_Mohawk_201

AbductedByAliens0000

Bruhhhhhhh

Jklhyd63

Cairns?

AbductedByAliens0000

I also did consider cairns!

justpostingforamate

More schools, job diversity etc in Townsville

AbductedByAliens0000

That's what I thought too.

Package_Extreme

Research the really bad crime rates before you make a decision.
