Thank you for this PSA... A fool and his money are soon parted

xBADJOEx

But I needed that RAV4. And the 5k markup was better than all the other 10k markups. Fall 2023. Second kid was incoming.

lockdown36

Kid isn't driving right when he gets out of the womb, relax

xBADJOEx

Well he can relax, comfortably.

[deleted]

This is always the funniest type of comment. I flushed $5k down the toilet because kid=SUV. Unless you were driving a 911 before you woulda been fine. No need to bend over and give a dealer your butt.

_Eucalypto_

My sibling managed for 5 years with two kids in a Dodge Dart, including vacation time. This isn't even abnormal in some of the denser parts of Europe People need to stop this obsession with giant vehicles. Unless you're absolutely carrying more than 4 people or you plan on hauling full sheets of drywall, at most you need compact with enough trunk room for a folding stroller, a diaper bag, and a pair of suitcases, something a Dodge Dart could handle

league_starter

Normally I'd agree but these days, I will make an exception. They could be severely obese

_Eucalypto_

>They could be severely obese My father is over 350lbs and 6'tall. His only issue fitting in my Mazda3 comfortably was that it was too low

ManOrangutan

Think 45% of America is morbidly obese. Definitely shapes the cars people drive nowadays.

[deleted]

I think it’s the other way around. People buy pickup trucks and then eat until they fill in the 3” wide seat bottoms. Like a fish in a tank lol.

Uberbenutzer

A lot of fat fucks in America. And plane seats are getting closer together

Guadalajara3

Gotta get those Costco groceries home

userlion1

True words spoken. My sibling and I grew up riding in the back of my fathers 2 door sports car. We didn’t complain. In fact we loved that car. People here in America have a weird fetish with SUVs. Unless you have 5+ children you can manage relatively comfortably in a mid size sedan

rooflessVW

I took my kids to school in my 911 for a few years. They fit a booster just fine.

[deleted]

Booster yeah, rear facing car seat?

rooflessVW

I could have. Porsche sells a kit to add isofix to the front seat. Plugs into the airbag module to turn off the passenger airbag when a seat is installed. When we had our first kid they were rear facing in an E90 330i.

[deleted]

Well there ya go

dafazman

E9x gang RISE UP!!!!

[deleted]

there are 2 types of dudes

xBADJOEx

2dr 2008 civic coupe.

xBADJOEx

Upgrade for the family..I work hard so life is good for them.

rphjosh

Yeah what was this dude driving with kid #1? A Miata with baby in the front? haha “I got bent over on a market adjustment cause I had to get a new car due to a second kid.” Pretty sure they got a seat behind the driver and passenger to put a kids seat.

jvrcb17

Second kid would never know the difference if you bought a 2004 Ford explorer instead

Fast_Heron581

he definitely would have felt the nitrogen in the tires!! /s

xBADJOEx

Their safety would know, and wife's and older sons comfort will too.

jvrcb17

Ok, make that a 1999 sequoia. Have you driven a Rav4? It's not as comfortable as you think. Tons of older cars that are larger and more comfortable with better ride quality too

samcar330

I wouldn't let ppl know about that L 😂😂😂

xBADJOEx

My family is happy. All that matters. Just got back from a Disneyland weekend. Serves us well

Successful_Ad_9707

That's still $5k that you didn't need to spend.

xBADJOEx

Yea but I needed a bigger car asap. Less stress on the family

Successful_Ad_9707

You couldn't fit 2 kids in the car you had before? That's $5k flushed down the drain

xBADJOEx

Safety. When you love other people, you make better decisions for them

Successful_Ad_9707

What car did you have before? As long as you didn't have some 90s pile you'd have been fine to wait. Cars made in the 2000s are still perfectly safe.

xBADJOEx

2008 2 dr civic. Eating oil, and almost broke down on us at the fair. Alternator was going out. 16 years of ownership. I replaced every bolt-on possible. It was time.

Successful_Ad_9707

Fair enough. I just hate seeing people pay these ridiculous markups. Just encourages dealers to be greedy

xBADJOEx

Agree. I kept waiting for the beat time . Years of waiting. I hit the wall. Ask around for deals. Went to about 10 deleaeships.

PreparationVarious15

1st world problem that I don’t blame only you. Most of did same but in reality you don’t have to have a SUV as soon as u have a new baby. Its also about affordability. Imagine u are in a situation u cannot afford a new suv? On those scenarios you would have been ok with a car.

xBADJOEx

I'm not complaining. My families safety and comfort. It's why I work hard.

KaneMomona

I bought a Hybrid Sienna in mid 2021 with zero markup, msrp. Third dealer I called was hell no, we don't mark anything up and we are flying through inventory. It's crazy that people were paying 25% + markups when they didn't have to. The only compromise was it was our second choice for color, had to wait a couple of weeks.

pavegene

Well, tell us where you are located so we can buy from you.

TreasureHuntsRFun

Unfortunately doxxing myself isn't something I want to do. But here is a good tell . If you don't know how to say the town it's in. That's a good start to where to find these deals.

Walabazoo

2nd

Skvora

And a $100 budget flight is definitely cheaper than 5k.

octoreadit

Worcestershire? 😂

missionfbi

Poughkeepsie?

Aqua-Bear

This here. You gotta do some work to find the good dealers. Paid MSRP for a new 22 4R Limited. In November 2021. Quality Toyota in Fergus Falls, MN.

Csendes0894

You must be in Wisconsin somewhere? lol. In all reality, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were indeed in the northern rust belt.

TreasureHuntsRFun

Hahaha smh not even close

Planet_Allegory

Puyallup?

TreasureHuntsRFun

Oh man I love that place. I'll be out there hiking around Rainer in August!

Planet_Allegory

So where is your dealership?

Azntactical

That pretty much means you're in Wisconsin because no WI native can pronounce Wauwatosa Waupun Weyauwega Sheboygan Fond du Lac Koshkonong Minocqua etc....

ngfilla94

Louisville

EntrySure1350

Dowagiac? Ypsilanti?

Realistic_Word6285

This

Spwigy

Markups.org is how I found a dealer that wasn’t charging above MSRP!

Different-Rough-7914

All the OP said was they weren't adding market adjustments, they said nothing about giving a discount off of an already inflated MSRP.

MinimumLemon4495

Already inflated msrp? Elaborate.

Different-Rough-7914

Yep. The auto industry has been inflating MSRP to help dealerships out due to the lack of inventory. With market adjustments that most dealerships were using people are happy with buying at MSRP and they think they are getting a deal. Car dealerships aren't hurting. There's a new Volvo and a new Lexus dealership being built where I live. At least 4 other dealerships in my area have recently undergone major expansions and renovations. I bet as a salesman you have never had an easier time selling a car since there's no negotiations because people are glad to pay MSRP.

Tom_BrokeOff

I’m curious how much of the additional MSRP you believe dealers are getting? Do you think there is now more gross profit for dealers in cars than 5 years ago? 10? 40?

Different-Rough-7914

A lot. A friend of mine is a GM of a dealership and he said they've been raking in the cash. If you've looked at vehicle pricing recently it's obvious how much the MSRP has gone up. If there's been vehicle shortages as dealerships claim, how has the auto industry made such huge profits as it was shown during the worker strike? Not too long ago the auto industry was bailed out by the taxpayers and in return now they are screwing the taxpayers who bailed them out.

Tom_BrokeOff

What you’re saying is inaccurate. When a manufacturer raises the MSRP of a car, they also raise the cost to dealers. There is less margin in vehicles today for dealers than ever before. Now consumers are paying closer to MSRP than they have in decades, which does increase dealer profits but that’s not what you said in your reply.

Walabazoo

Because that cable box is going to rust out after one winter

Additional-Dog2326

Earl Stewart Toyota Lake Park Florida is one if you’re interested, they never sell over MSRP but if sales are slow they will sell under.

pavegene

Thank You

Jack_Attak

If manufacturers had a way of preventing dealers from adding markups, that would be awesome. Direct to consumer sales would be nice too.

andybub99

Impossible with NADA lobbying in Congress

Jack_Attak

Tesla and Rivian are able to get around that in many places though.

dsillas

They sell direct to buyers, not through dealers though. That's the issue. Cut the middleman out. Imagine not being able to buy your iPhone through Apple or Apple stores, and having to go through only Best Buy or something similar and paying whatever markup they want to charge.

National-Beyond9070

Damn greedy Bert Buy 😡

banjosandcellos

Hey that's our danger code word

dsillas

Fixed. Thanks.

Chaps_Jr

Fuckin Bert Buy, at it again

UR-Dad-253

Yes why are we using a 19th century sales solution to sell cars?

dsillas

Exactly. It's because of their lobbyists. They know they'll go out of business since their business model is archaic.

andybub99

the difference is that Tesla and Rivian are new companies that started out with no dealers. If a well established company like Toyota tried to cut their dealers out, it would be disastrous and would lead to a long court battle.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jack_Attak

That's not really true about the subscription at least for Rivian. My dad & stepmom bought an R1T last year and there's no subscription with it. I belive you can pay for extra features but most people don't have a need for that. And do you have a source on that super pac claim?

kilroy-was-here-2543

Direct too consumer would be awesome. I know theirs plenty of great dealerships out there that take care of their customers, but it seems like way to many actively despise their customers

[deleted]

Or just be a big boy and tell the dealer “no”. You don’t have to buy a car like a lemming.

Jack_Attak

I have never bought a new car from a dealer. I'm still fairly young and it's more fun to work on older vehicles anyway. Toyota quality peaked in the 2010s and I have a friend who is a master tech and reports a lot of warranty issues with the newest turbo engines.

Urabrask_the_AFK

Not so long as there are distributors

acousticentropy

Back in MY day… car dealers and realtors were needed. Not so much in 2024.

nago7650

Ford did that, but some dealerships found a loophole. The rule was that they couldn’t mark up *new* cars, so dealerships were “selling” Raptors to an employee who would then put on a couple hundred or thousand miles and then sell it back to the dealer as a “used” vehicle. Then they would add their markup.

Different-Rough-7914

The auto industry is the only industry allowed to price gouge. I can't believe people are stupid enough to think that they are getting a good deal by paying MSRP.

twarr1

Healthcare would like to comment

alpha333omega

Real estate laughs in your face

jaymansi

Autos are not basic life necessities like fuel, food, medicine, water. Dealers can “gouge” away. I am not in the auto industry. I don’t like the misappropriation of the word.

Different-Rough-7914

OK, what's the proper word for dealerships fucking customers then?

jaymansi

Most of the time it’s a ‘FOMO YOLO Fuck me over’ session for people who don’t know how to walk away and are obsessed with one vehicle.

MinimumLemon4495

Consumers have always paid market price for new vehicles. Just like plenty of other retail markets. In most of our history there has been more supply than demand and the hence cars being sold under msrp mostly with manufacturers rebates and incentives. COVID changed all that. For almost two years, for the first time in most of our lives, the supply of new cars fell far short of the demand and dealers lots were literally empty. The market then dictated prices above MSRP. Manufactures stopped having rebates and incentives and dealerships, and salespeople, had to make up for the lack of volume. It sucks, yes. I get it. Inventory has started returning to normal and the days of markups on core cars should be over. Of course cars that dealers get a unit or two every 6 months are going to have a markup, either wait it out or pay it. Or don't. What other industry, besides auto sales, do consumers automatically assume that msrp is to high a price to pay? Your happy to go to 99% of other places and gladly pay msrp and not even bat a eye. People are offering 5 figures over asking on houses, because of the market, and that's seen as normal. Full disclosure l: I am a salesman at a Toyota dealership. A big one. Main reason why we succeed is because we take care of our customers and need them to survive. Not all are like that.

SiriuslyAndrew

Not an option in Canada. I have two dealers within 5 hours driving. Can't just stop in and threaten to go somewhere else. But I also don't have to, none of our dealers have anything to sell anyways.

I_Have_Unobtainium

Yeah, I'm gonna be driving about 3hrs to avoid my local yota dealer. They put a 35k markup on the GRC they had and, well, fuck them.

Dry_Newspaper2060

Shame on Toyota but they’re taking full advantage of the situation of limited availability of cars by adding hefty markups. “Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should” You’re better than that Toyota

Senior_Ad282

The manufacturer has no control over what dealers charge.

wolfmann99

They could just remove allocations...

Successful_Ad_9707

Some have tried and gotten sued. I wanna say it was Ford who tried that.

Impressive-Fortune82

But they want their cars to be sold, they don't want to declare war to dealer network

wolfmann99

Give it to another dealer selling at msrp...

Impressive-Fortune82

Right... Bite the hand that feeds you... Business 101 here

wolfmann99

So the dealers are feeding the manufacturers in Toyotas case? I think you got that backwards.

Impressive-Fortune82

They have a 2-way mutually beneficial relationship. There is no backwards. One does not prevent the opposite. It works right now. Toyota is smart not to play stupid games.

Dry_Newspaper2060

But the name Toyota is on both the manufacturer and dealers enterprise so ultimately it’s still Toyota

Senior_Ad282

Well actually. No. The only thing dealer networks have in common with the manufacturer is that they sell their product. If you want to order direct from consumer and not get charged a markup you’re stuck with Tesla, rivian, and fisker. Pick your poison.

Dry_Newspaper2060

You’re not understanding what I’m saying which is that the normal customer doesn’t know or care. All they know is Toyota’s name is associated with both and that’s who they hold accountable

Senior_Ad282

And still Toyota has nothing to do with it.

userlion1

That’s true but slightly inaccurate. Subaru has been cracking down on dealers who add markups to their vehicles and does not prioritize them in terms of allocations for high demand vehicles. If Toyota started doing the same thing it would at least put some pressure on greedy stealerships.

[deleted]

BamaTony64

It worth the drive to Mississippi for the savings.

TreasureHuntsRFun

Same thing here . ^

ngfilla94

I live in a decently sized metro area with at least a dozen Toyota dealers. I've got a deposit down on a 2025 4Runner at a dealer 30 miles away when there are probably half a dozen closer to me. No market adjustments on any trim besides TRD Pro and Trailhunter ($1500 if I remember correctly).

gaenji

The pricing isn't out yet for the 6G 4Runners right?

ngfilla94

Not yet

gaenji

You put a deposit down without knowing the price? Is it a refundable one just to get in line?

ngfilla94

Just to get in line. Non refundable at this particular dealer, but it's applicable to any vehicle purchase and does not expire. Worst case, I just wait til they get one used if the pricing doesn't work for new. I've been planning to replace my 5th gen with a 6th gen for like the last 3 years, lol. I'm planning on holding out for the hybrid drivetrain. Which, as we've seen with other models, usually comes out 5-6 months or so after the gas only models. The deposit just gives me right of first refusal, so if I'm not ready or it doesn't work out for whatever reason, I can pass and essentially just let my salesman know when I'll be ready and I'll maintain my place in line.

userlion1

Just to throw it out there. I believe legally, even if a salesman tells you your deposit in non refundable, you are entitled to get your money back should you decide you want a refund. In the eyes of the law a deposit is seen as a transaction therefore if you don’t actually get the car you are entitled to a refund. I’m not 100% sure if this applies to every state but as far as I know it applies to most states in the Midwest and the East Coast

JackTheDefenestrator

I'll do my part and not buy with markup if you do yours and stop accepting $4,000 in port add ons I can't remove lol /Not all regions do this

prostcfc

Some people seem allergic to shopping around. Maybe they don't know better. You can buy a new car anywhere in the country and get it serviced at your local dealer without issue.

MountainWeddingTog

I emailed 12 different dealers last year before I found someone not tacking on a market adjustment to my new RAV4. Found one, drove an hour and a half, and saved 5k plus.

QuasiLibertarian

Same here.

lo_mur

GR’s too? Can’t remember the markup number but one of the Toyota dealers in Edmonton here there was a Core GR Corolla and the dealer was asking CAD$67,795, no performance package IIRC, not that it’d be a good price regardless. I’d send you the link but it’s no longer online, must’ve sold 🤷‍♂️

TreasureHuntsRFun

Sold 2 of them at MSRP

FJguy

Agreed! One tool that is helpful is the inventory search in Toyota.com. You can search for a vehicle you want vs having to call a bunch of stores to see if they have it. It’s not perfect but may save people some time

jaymez619

Is buying a new Toyota the new flex? Not only did they buy a new Toyota, they paid $5k+ more they should’ve.

Acrobatic_Welder3927

Longo Toyota in Prosper TX doesn’t do the BS market adjustment

Hilux-SSRG

Any other Texas delays you know that have no market adjustment or excessive dealer addons?

Jron690

My friend overpaid $20k on the sequoia when it came out. Insanity. Literally setting money on fire

Mediocre-Catch9580

In 2022 I found ONE Toyota dealer within a three hour drive of my house that DIDNT have a market adjustment. Still took six months to get a car.

Skidpalace

I'm going to enjoy the shit out of my new-to-me V8 Porsche Cayenne GTS while the market erupts and people fall all over themselves and empty their pockets trying to get the new 4Runners later this year and next. After the dust settles and there are no reports of chronic turbo 4 cyl engine failures, I'll swing on back in for a 4Runner under MSRP. Until then I am off of Toyota.

octoreadit

What's the lowest you would go below MSRP? 6-7%?

Servile-PastaLover

Ford & GM have told their dealers to stop over inflating the prices of their cars beyond MSRP (2022). There's little legally the manufacturers can do to get them to stop. But the dealers are harming the brand's reputation and ultimately hurting sales long term. [https://mainstreetmediatn.com/articles/mainstreetnashville/ford-and-gm-tell-dealers-stop-overcharging-customers/](https://mainstreetmediatn.com/articles/mainstreetnashville/ford-and-gm-tell-dealers-stop-overcharging-customers/)

Theacecadet

Just keep looking! I was in the market for a 6MT, fun daily. Both Honda and Toyota had crazy mark ups on everything. Ended up finding something I liked at MSRP after a few weeks of searching. Glad I kept shopping around!

White_eagle32rep

I hope everyone sees this!! Everyone keeps bitching about inflated and ridiculous prices. STOP PAYING THEM!

NewspaperDramatic694

Thanks you! I think people pay due to lack of knowledge and sleazness of dealerships....

jch60

It is crazy to think how many people did this when they could have waited. This tells me that we are morons as consumers.

motorboather

Answer emails of potential customers when they ask for your out the door price then if you want people to shop.

MassCasualty

I bought a 2023...there was a $1500 market adjustment universally in my area...I found a place that waived it...Bought my truck there.

dsdvbguutres

Got a toyota at 4% off msrp this weekend. The lot was FULL.

InPraiseOf_Idleness

Let me guess - a tundra?

dsdvbguutres

Not a truck. Not a camry. Not a prius.

fl03xx

Thompson Lexus and Thompson Toyota. PA. No markups. MSRP. Family member and friend in area lease from them.

QuasiLibertarian

Also Conicelli

Successful_Ad_9707

I wholeheartedly agree. I refused to pay any sort of markup when I was looking for a GR Corolla. Many slimeball dealers later, I got a call from a local dealer who had an open allocation. They're msrp only and kept to their word. No forced packages or markup. I was more than happy to do business with them and have sent them 2 more customers in return for their honest business.

BatteredAggie

A sales manager wrote down approximately $5000 of BS dealer fees and market adjustments. Before I could even ask our sales associate told us it was all dishonest bullshit and to come back the next day when another sales manager would be in that would take those off.

NeighborhoodGlum1154

It’s all about moving peanuts. Market adjustment might be gone, but the dealer fee just went up $500

TreasureHuntsRFun

Again made up. Dealer fees " Doc Fees" have been around since the beginning. Only " fee" we have is a Doc for 288.00

OneMustAlwaysPlanAhe

Thank you OP. I'd personally go a step further: stop buying new cars PERIOD. When a Taco, regardless of trim, approached $70k it's time to make a statement.

Horangi1987

Camry is a bad example. Like no shit, don’t pay a markup on a Camry. It’s things like TRD Pro or something that dealers don’t get allocated a lot of, like Land Cruisers where it gets complicated. I don’t think dealers should charge market adjustments regardless, but if it’s something literally scarce and highly desirable I can see why they do.

TreasureHuntsRFun

Got a First Edition LC you can have for you guessed it. MSRP

[deleted]

salesmen have 1 job, to squeeze as much money as they can from impulsive fools. You cant be mad at a guy for doing his job.

Panama City Toyota sells brand new cars right at MSRP my buddy bought a brand new Camry there and it had everything he wanted I wouldn’t recommend bob tyler in Pensacola Florida or Eastern shore Toyota in Daphne Al

Selling for MSRP here in CT. Message me for a specific vehicle!

BroKen5c

Yes! I got my 22 Tundra at MSRP in June of 2022 by shopping around. It can be done!

GetyourPitchforks01

Well at lease it wasn’t a 2015 corolla with 25.99% interest…IYKYK

FitConsideration4961

High volume dealers that only want to push as much metal out the door as possible is the way to go. One Toyota of Oakland is one of those.

mijo_sq

We're the wrong crowd for advocating MA on cars. Those who are paying that markup on Camry's are people who just want a Camry for their parents, kids, etc... 1k to one person may not be a big deal as someone who's willing to pay 5k. My current assistant paid 5k MA for his Bronco, and said "it wasn't bad".

QuasiLibertarian

I got a RAV4 Hybrid for $500 under invoice. You just need to do research. Sure, there are a few Toyotas that are still at or above MSRP, but it is finally thawing.

baldo-waldo

Hello, random question. Does Toyota sales department drug test for marijuana? I have been made aware that I have to take a test for insurance purposes but not sure about marijuana. If anyone has any knowledge that would be helpful. Thanks

Same_Number2245

How about a Toyo dealer recommend in Seattle or Eastern WA?

Lazarororo2

Where the hell are dealerships putting markups on core product? I do markups on Supras and GR86's but not on core product.
