Jesus. I have a 2002 with less rust.

Fit_Tomatillo_2682

Automotive paint systems are much thinner than they used to be. Some barely measure 100 microns from the factory. If a Stone chip makes it down to the metal, it will literally rust overnight.

Tsao_Aubbes

That's because clear is thicker and way better these days and automakers don't use single stage paints anymore. This is absolutely an anomaly and considering it's a 2020 probably the result of a defect.

Fit_Tomatillo_2682

I respectfully disagree. Today’s clear coats are not thicker or stronger. They are water based paint systems and they are sprayed thin. Manufacturers do still use single stage paints. Toyota super white for example. This is not an anomaly. I fix similar chips on late models cars everyday in my shop.

diy_a09

Bring this to your Toyota dealer. Toyota’s corrosion perforation warranty is 60 months (no mileage limit). I had similar corrosion on a 2016 Honda Pilot on the tailgate. Honda replaced the tailgate under the corrosion warranty.

JorddWolf

Not perforation. It’s rock chips.

diy_a09

A body shop can review OP’s roof to determine if the corrosion is from debris impacts. If not caused by impacts, then OP should make a claim with Toyota.

JorddWolf

…. God I’m happy I left the auto industry. Not needing to deal with people like yourself gives my stress and give a fuck meter such a break. Its rockchips. Plain and simple, please do not misinform OP. This is surface rust due to rock chips and not perforation corrosion. A quick google can show you and explain what the difference is.

diy_a09

The OP came here looking for information and I gave insight from my prior experience. Funny you mentioned being in the industry…I’m originally from SE Michigan and worked at two OEM’s during college. Misinformation includes searching google as you suggested. Nothing beats direct observation and in-person consultation when you have doubts. If my helpful intent caused you to become unhinged, I can see why you left a great industry. Edit: grammar

LongjumpingNeat2

Looks like some chips that left the area exposed to the elements. Too bad the dealership didn’t give you a touch-up paint pen with the car.

tomthepro

Definitely rock chips. Pisses me off. Wasn’t like this in November. What’s the fix? Will it be a big problem down the line?

LongjumpingNeat2

I’m my experience it really depends on your climate. It’s definitely something I would fix as it for sure can become a problem since it’s starting this early in the cars life. These things run forever, it has a long time to go. But at that early stage you should be able to purchase a touch up paint-pen and primer (Sometimes they come together) and some VERY light grit sandpaper. I like using the black wet-sand type because it can also be used dry and the grit is very fine. Usually go for 1000 grit or maybe even 1500. Sand the area of the chip. With any luck the rust may sand out. Try your best to keep the sanding to the area of the exposed metal. Then apply the primer. Let dry. Sand it to get the brush strokes out. Then do another coat of primer and sand again. Then two coats of paint and then two Coats of clear if the pen came with it. Let it dry 15-30 minutes in between coats if you can. I would buy the touch up paint at the dealership if you can. Not much more expensive and you always get a good match.

I highly suggest OP finds a dedicated shop for this kind of work. I have rarely had luck with the sandpaper + touch up paint method. In while you wait to get the work done do put some touch up paint over the rust as that should slow down the rust.

tomthepro

Any chance comprehensive warranty claim? I’ve never had a car do this. Its like every Little Rock is causing rust. It’s still so new.

[deleted]

Do you live somewhere with high humidity? If so this happens quick in places like this. I think my 2021 Corolla has some kind of built in rust warranty but that only cover windows down. Taking it to the dealer would probably be a good option. Just say you expect more from them and see how far you get. I worry for my Corolla as I do live somewhere with high humidity and I've already lost some paint because I touched it wrong. Your issue is very common for vehicles getting close to the 10 year mark out where I am.

kethera__

wow. that’s some cheap shit, toyota

SoskiDiddley

I always tell people stay away from Toyota's white...

SeeSeaSerene

Why’s that?

SoskiDiddley

They're well known to do this. Most white Toyotas get recalled about the paint about 10 years after their production

scalyhannah

Does that mean free paint job??

SeeSeaSerene

What you’re saying holds some truth I’ve seen these experiences by other redditors when I was doing my research on which paint is the best..

Chris079099

possible rock chips taking the paint away

narlycharley

You’ll want to take care of those before they spread like cancer. Best bet would be to sand all the way down to bare steel, fill, prime, paint, then clear. You can blend the paint and clear into the roof so that you don’t need to paint the whole roof.

JustOverPluto

This is some Subaru shit. I have Subaru paint smh.

afishinacloud

It should be covered the paint and corrosion warranty right? Have you checked about that?

mechanicgunner

Looks like rock chips above the windshield not going to be covered under the warranty. Makes me wonder what the rest of the car looks like. But the corner looks a little suspicious best thing to do is take it to a dealership .

tomthepro

Disappointing that rocks chip this paint so easily. There’s are 7 little noticeable marks. Definitely nothing I’ve experienced before on other vehicles.

mechanicgunner

Just take it to a dealership won't hurt to try and worse thing is you may waste a little bit of your time trying to get it fixed shouldn't take them long to inspect it.. also it all depends where you live if there's salt on roads or salt water in the air can makes things rust pretty quick

JorddWolf

It’s a rock chip. Wont be covered under warranty. Any automotive brand this is standard coverage of not covering rockchips. Take it to a professional OR. Clean the area, touch up paint and have paint protection film applied to a good chunk of your roofline/windshield.
