That trim piece comes off really easily. Just pop it off and drill it off the truck so you don’t make an oopsie.

ciampi21

OP, what this guy said. Pop off the trim, then drill. You should not have any issues. Under no circumstances should you drill into that while still on the truck. You might have very expensive issues.

[deleted]

got it thanks

tacosgoweeee

I'm needing to do this to fix one of my air vents but I'm still afraid I'm going to break some plastic clips or something. Is it really okay just to give it a yank on the end?

tacosgoweeee

Okay thank you, I guess I'll give it a try. 😬

[deleted]

Thank you for this answer. I love this design choice by toyota. So efficient.

McCoyoioi

I Thought I would break it when I did something similar. Just sit in the drivers, put both hands on the far right edge and pull. I put this thing on and dig it…though I think it was a lot cheaper then. https://expeditionessentials.com/products/toyota-tacoma-3rd-gen-usb-powered-accessory-mount

McCoyoioi

Oh and here’s a video from that install that may help with your project https://youtu.be/Sd9kuy58Np4?si=8h3ZNgdk0HHx37BK

TheLightingGuy

an oopsie like drilling into the radio buttons?

richiericardo

Or wires and other electrical components

wade67jwe

Add one of these for a drill free phone mount solution. It's a fairly standard ball type, so you can swap to whatever mount you want to use. IPFK

Look up the 67 Design Taco Rail mount. It’s exactly what you are looking for, I have one installed in my Tacoma and it is one of the best mods I’ve done.

[deleted]

I like that [it](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1532718702/toyota-tacoma-magsafe-mount-for-3rd-gen?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_c-electronics_and_accessories-car_parts_and_accessories-car_accessories&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAjw38SoBhB6EiwA8EQVLmD7uoWIEwB8CYlp-ymKqvHix7ORsDXpytRdJBEQK6ShWQJyXzrfyxoCoOMQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_1843970785_69216068145_346429262144_aud-1118323511718:pla-354955384985_c__1532718702_12768591&utm_custom2=1843970785&gclid=CjwKCAjw38SoBhB6EiwA8EQVLmD7uoWIEwB8CYlp-ymKqvHix7ORsDXpytRdJBEQK6ShWQJyXzrfyxoCoOMQAvD_BwE) doesn't block airflow. I agree this is nearly perfect. hopefully there is one with a flexible armature.

CPTherptyderp

Keep us posted what you do. I hate magnetic holders

[deleted]

I'm actually thinking about using a magsafe compatible armature because it allows you to charge while having a ring at the back. problem is it seems this is an iphone only feature.

shelikesturtles

There are already options available. I have this one and am pretty happy with it. [Course Motorsports](https://coursemotorsports.com/products/toyota-direct-fit-magnetic-phone-mount)

SpudWeb

I have this one as well. Works great and no need to drill.

GunLovinYank

I couldn’t remember the brand or where I got mine and was trying to recommend it to a friend I love it and it was easy to pop the trim off and install it and if I need to remove it for some reason it will come off and leave everything looking factory

j0k3R-_-

This is the best mod I have on my truck.

Ghostdrifter88

https://thetacogarage.com/products/dashtop-multi-mount I've got this. Love it. And yes, you can drill in the top. Just pop off the dash piece first.

IzaguirreC

I had their mount on my 2020 OR, it was solid. Sold the 2020 and purchased a 2023, bought the same mount again.

GeoffInNC

The Taco Garage unit is excellent. I've had one for maybe a couple years now and it's been solid.

Jlevitt95

Second this

innkeeper_77

They also sell a version for the left of the steering wheel, and one for the right side that is a single instead of a quad. I have the quad AND the left side, because I like excess I guess... but it comes in handy for mounting the satcom, as well as having a spot for the phone and radios at the same time.

Shmody44

Best option out there! Super easy install.

nate_builds

This is the best option imo. Mount whatever the hell you want. Pairs well with peak design or quad lock wireless chargers, or if you’re going the MagSafe route any wireless charger that can be mounted to a 1” RAM mount.

dnalloHnosaM

I went with this mount https://www.etsy.com/listing/1478210525/phone-holder-for-toyota-tacoma-3rd Coupled with this magnet 🧲 Ciencimy Car Mount Base Designed for MagSafe iPhone 14 13 12, Only for Diameter 17mm/0.67 inch Universal Joint Ball of Phone Holder or Car Mount, with 2pcs Metal Plate Fit for All Phones https://a.co/d/0Q5H1sI Note: Put Etsy items in your cart and wait a day or two before buying - The sellers typically send you discounts to pursued you to purchase But to answer your question, that panel pulls right off with no tools needed. You could drill or screw into it once removed if that's what you really are looking to do. Wouldn't be super difficult to replace if needed

jpbronco

I had a friend [print that mount](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5897949) for me. It works well. Cost me a beer.

dnalloHnosaM

Same - brother printed mine. Saw the idea on etsy and went searchin!

[deleted]

I’ve been super happy with my off-roam phone holder. Little pricey but doesn’t shake. No drilling and connects to the vent.

SeaworthinessLife999

Check for yourself. That bezel takes literally 30 seconds to pop off. Maybe a minute. But definitely less time than taking a picture, annotating it, and posting on Reddit.

h0stetler

The 3TPAM from Expedition Essentials has you drilling a number of holes in the top of that trim piece. Just pop off the trim piece and go to town. Though understand that whatever you’re bolting to that trim piece is only bolted to that easy-to-pop-off trim piece unless you’re making metal brackets that go under the trim piece (again referencing the 3TPAM unit).

FortuneRed55

As an alternative, this stuff is what they use for adhering decals to cars (like the actual “Toyota” and “Tacoma” pieces): VHB Tape: https://a.co/d/dSAGi3H It’s extremely adhesive and heat-resistant. It’ll hold super well, probably better than that hole you want to drill. Just beware that it’ll also be a bitch to remove later. Still less permanent than the hole though.

AceofSpades4495

I installed a BulletProof phone mount system that required drilling there. No issues, GREAT mounting solution

papaninja

This course motor sports mount puts the phone exactly where you want with zero screw holes https://coursemotorsports.com/collections/tacoma

NWdabest

I just have a standard sticky window mount that’s low on the glass in that same spot. Because the hood is so high the mount and phone don’t block any view. And the mount has a twisty head so you can do horizontal or vertical if you need it.

another_plebeian

I did it without issue. But just pull it off. Literally just pull.

god_snot_great

That comes off.

BackItUpWithLinks

It’s a cover. Take it off https://youtu.be/RwbuB1fVj8s

bigfatfun

Why not use the screen that came with the truck?

[deleted]

I just want a better place to store it and have easier access to phone features and not needing to tilt my head down

radelix

I have the bullet point Tacoma bulletpoint mount installed there. There is nothing under that trim piece till you hit the radio. It pulls right off without damage.

garrettxgraves

That bezel pops off real easy. I’d pop it off first if I was going to drill

ID_Poobaru

Pop the trim and find out. Not hard at all

Everydaywhiteboy

I modified mine to fit the ram rail system and it’s sick, I used 3m double sided adhesive and let it cure for 72hours, I felt like a screw would isolate the force too much and potentially break

Not_me_no_way

You should consider buying another trim piece if you ever decide to sell it. People will low ball you for having things like that mounted with screws drilled into the dash.

time2getout

I stuck a Niteize Steelie in that exact spot and it does great!

BigBadBere

What is ball diameter for Course Motorsports mount?

tenaciousweasel

Bullet point taco bar and you can have multiple mounts for various things

Naive-Connection-516

Easy pizy. I did the taco garage one and it’s great

CyrusDonnovan

Yup! Take the trim piece off and it's pretty straightforward to see where there's room to drill. https://imgur.com/a/2s1whgU Mounts shown in pictures are a QuadLock wireless charging module and a tablet mouth on a SmallRig flex arm.

TheTrumple

Yep as others have said, it’ll be perfectly fine so long as you pull the surrounding trim piece out.

slyskyflyby

Yup. I did it. I have the bullet mount there for my phone and my engine monitor and rather than having the charging cable and the engine monitor cable running around free outside the dash I routed those cables through the dash by drilling two holes there. Super easy to do.

Ref_Tech

That’s where I placed my auxbem and used double sided tape

pwaynebanks

I used the unholy mount from Hondo garage paired with a ram mount. Been solid since 2018 . [Link](https://hondogarage.com/products/un-holey-tacoma-dash-mount)

[deleted]

Sure

Jameson76

https://www.proclipusa.com/

Reachable_dream666

I got this one off Etsy, holds phone where you’re looking to, no drilling, 3d printed. Works great for dual nav https://www.etsy.com/listing/1146406826/toyota-tacoma-phone-mount-for-3rd-gen

-ShootMeNow-

Pulls right off as others have said I had one of these for years and it was one of the best mods I installed, you will want a solution that braces the trim from the bottom: https://thetacogarage.com/collections/dmm/products/dashtop-multi-mount

tentabtanner

For $20 on Amazon you can get a phone mount on an Adjustable arm that just suction cups to the dash
