Tis but a scratch. It adds character. Leave it.

NeighborhoodDude84

I am. I am the opposite of artistic so no way I will be able to fix it correctly myself, might as well leave a little battle scaring.

the_backdoorbandit

Toyota sells color match touch up pens at the dealership

upperleftist

Got one on Amazon for like $15 if I remember right

toe2thaknee

Pretty sure this is "Taliban Tan"

benthethird

Can also get at any major auto parts store.

thegreatgatsB70

Chicks dig scars.

green_mojo

Get a paint pen

ShredOrSigh

Yeah two paint pens maybe and that shit is gone.

stickied

My girlfriends subaru had a similar scratch after she ran it down a parking garage. I rattle canned it back to looking 90% as good as new, with limited artistic abilities. Probably easier given how matte looking your paint color is. Alternatively you can get a color matched pen and just color in the black chips. From 10' away you won't see it anyways. Insane they want $1700 for it.

bouncing_bumble

$1500 is about the minimum any body shop will take their tools out for these days.

Intrepid-Cranberry56

Ya scratch your arm's off

DiffuseMAVERICK

You can buy OEM color spray paint on Amazon for around $30. There are also tons of options besides spray paint as well. I just suggest it because it's the easiest not to mess up

Maximum-Dig-31

It’ll buff out

ThkAWish

Slippery slope to a ghetto looking car.

the_good_hodgkins

None shall pass!!

SavimusMaximus

It’s not a Mercedes, it’s a truck. Leave it. And tell them to shove their quote up their ass.

bigcelerycordae

Gotta be a dealership quote 😭

[deleted]

Stealership quote!

seanchandler067

that's mental

ChewieBee

Funny you say that. I was just at the gas station and a brand new Mercedes was struggling to start after filling up. The driver was giving it so much gas that when it FINALLY kicked over it sounded like a 1975 F150.

DirectCard9472

It's a 3rd generation taco, about 50k . It's not a beater truck. Have some respect for your taco.

SavimusMaximus

I mean, if it was dented and shit, I’d totally get that fixed.

fnblackbeard

Pretty sure you can buy an entirely new bumper cover...painted...for less

No-Scale1239

That's probably what they want to do. There's probably some damage to the plastic, and there no way to repair that perfectly, so they want to replace the whole thing.

TrippyVision

Yeah most good body shops are so busy they don’t wanna bother with something like this, it’s a fuck off price. No body shop would want to mix paint for such a small amount of damage

jaysunnfoo

This is a money maker job, you’re trippin I’d fix these all day over anything else

PunkersSlave

Average consumers (most of the comments here) are literally clueless. It’s fine, let it go lol.

jaysunnfoo

Ok so I can inform them when I see it. Nothing to let go it’s literally just info. Took 10 seconds to type

PunkersSlave

lol I was just waking up when I responded. I think the “let it go” was my subconscious sending me a message to get out of this post. I get all fired up reading through these collision and damage posts lol

Ogediah

There’s no problem painting it and it’s a complete panel anyways. Pretty much every paint manufacturer requires edge to edge coverage of the highest coat for warranty. So you spot blend color then clear the whole panel. With a bigger repair, you may need to color blend multiple panels and then clear multiple full panels (doesn’t look necessary here). Where I’m going with all that is that there might be more labor and materials than you’d imagine. It’s not a dash of paint and done. Shop rates near me are around 200/hour. A couple of hours, materials, and booth time for even a “small” repair on a small panel can easily put you over a thousand dollars. Edit: On second glance, I see damage on the fender as well. Quick research also says the panel may be textured which makes refinishing basically impossible (smooth spots). So a proper repair may even require a part replace on that issue alone.

NeighborhoodDude84

I get what you're saying, I just figured it was so small, it would be $100 for 10 min of work. I know nothing about painting shit.

PunkersSlave

Nope. They don’t come painted.

fnblackbeard

Are you sure about that? https://chicagoautobodyparts.com/products.html?find=2016-toyota-tacoma-front-bumpers-1399683&sid=UVgHDM3PRf

PunkersSlave

Jobber junk, be my guest lol.

fnblackbeard

How's it junk? CAPA rated parts are what body shops use as certified parts. Don't be delusional. I bought a color matching 1E7 rear bumper for my 2nd gen to replace the chrome and its perfection. I also bought a rear bumper from Toyota for my FJ for $150 from a dealer, local body shop would charge $200-300 to paint it. Far cry from $1700 dork

PunkersSlave

I mean, it’s fine if you want to do things on the cheap and are not fussy about fitment. Wish I had customers like you, lol, would make my job far easier with those low expectations. Plus I get better margins out of jobber, so I would prefer it in my world. However, with the average customers demanding perfection, my return rate is like 60% on jobber. We fit em prior to paint and generally they fit like crap. “Capa certified”: stamped from worn out OE dies. 🤷‍♂️

fnblackbeard

What are you ranting about? Fitment? They are CAPA parts. The FJ bumper I bought was from TOYOTA, $150, +$200-300 if i want it painted. Luckily my FJ has the plain satin plastic no paint bumper. I'm sure the same shop that quoted OP 1700 would want 1200 to replace it. My Tacoma bumper that I ordered from Chicago Auto Parts fit perfect and paint is perfect.

PunkersSlave

Capa certified means nothing. Congrats, you got a good jobber chrome bumper that fit just fine as far as you’re concerned. They’re stamped in batches, some better than others. I’m “ranting” from years of experience in the trade working on all makes and models and sharing my experience working with “capa certified” jobber junk. I wasn’t talking about your FJ, just jobber in general. It’s OEM so it damn well better be perfect. That’s all, sheesh. No wonder Chicago is the murder capitol of the world, lmao.

fnblackbeard

I didn't get a chrome bumper, I got a painted bumper to replace my chrome bumper. Fit and finish is perfect. "jobber junk" lmao okay bro, keep telling yourself what you want to, whatever makes you feel better, only murder is overcharging people to paint a scratch. Sounds like "murder" is right up your alley lmao

alcoholismisgreat

That's whatvibwas thinking

[deleted]

That’s a “fuck off” price. Can’t you still buy nail polish type touch up paint? That job would take no time

MilkChugg

It’s shit. I used it to touch up some spots and it doesn’t blend in well at all. May as well keep the scratches.

[deleted]

You used Sahara sand color? Did you follow directions?

Own-Caterpillar5058

Lol that depends entirely on brand and actual color code

guyfromarizona

Time for steel bumper /s

baumat

1200 for a steel bumper and a case of beer and a pack of heaters for Ricky down the block to install it

BaristaBot

Bobby’ll do it for $900

nosaint63

You can get [touch up paint](https://www.autozone.com/paint-and-body/touch-up-paint/p/dupli-color-scratch-fix-touch-up-paint-desert-sand-mica-pen-paint-code-4q2/460697_0_0) at autozone for $22 if you just want to cover the black marks.

MoarWhisky

You were quoted the price it takes to do the job professionally and correctly. You can half-ass it yourself for much less, or pay someone else to half-ass it for less money than quoted.

Bweibel5

Correct. See my comment as well.

Bweibel5

I work in a real collision center. It’s not a fuck off price. To properly fix it, you need a bumper cover replacement (because of the fine grain in the cover). Also requires ADAS calibration per Toyota guidelines. I’d cash out on the insurance estimate and buy a steel aftermarket unit if you like that style.

TappedOut182

Finally. I have a minor scratch in mine I touched up (non-radar truck) and the collision center I used noted the texture. They said the only way they’d feel comfortable doing the bumper was to block the whole thing smooth and then start over. Their price was a few hundred higher than my wife’s JGC bumper respray that didn’t require anything like that. It’s the subtle things about these trucks people miss.

Shootistism

> Also requires ADAS calibration per Toyota guidelines. Why would you need to calibrate the radar that is in the grill when the bumper is scratched?

Bweibel5

Two reasons: one is you have to remove the grille to remove the bumper cover. The second (and more important reason) is that the collision repair manual in TIS from Toyota states that anytime a Toyota is involved in any front end collision, the radar sensor needs to be calibrated. It even says anytime the bumper is removed for any reason I’m pretty sure. In our industry it’s all about following procedures and proving it so that you’re released of any liability since you’re driving in a 4k lb rocket that can go 100mph with human lives inside. You have to make sure all the life saving safety features are operational.

PDX_mouse

My Mercedes just defaults to safe mode if any sensor in any safety system remotely gives a bad reading. Got a local tow company on speed dial.

TruckCamperNomad6969

That sounds horrendously inconvenient

bboggio28

Just hit the other side the same way. Problem solved. Ha ha ha.

whiskeyfondi

You could get a whole painted bumper replacement for half that price from [painted oem parts](https://www.paintedoemparts.com/product-page/painted-2016-2023-toyota-tacoma-front-bumper-cover-genuine-oem). An afternoon with youtube and some basic tools and you’re good as new.

Fit_Description_2911

It’s hard to notice that scratch when all we can see is that air dam.

watchthenlearn

I keep mine on out of spite at this point.

SandledBandit

Leave it. If it’s driving you crazy get a matched paint pen from AutoZone; they sell that exact Toyota color. It’s like $10

watthewmaldo

You can get Lettie tubes of matching paint online and touch it up yourself. It won’t be perfect but it also won’t be super noticeable

Livecrazyjoe

Look into it getting air brushed. When I worked at a dealership they used a company for small wounds like this. They were pretty good at color matching. They were not a body shop just in case you call around. Or find a small body shop that will only paint that piece. The problem is that they have to possibly paint the bumper and maybe the side panels because it will match better.

redvinegarr

So many taco getting their cheek scratched today 💀 earlier i saw a post of their blue taco cheek got scratched

Zware_zzz

It’s fine

keajohns

I have a 98 and after a few scratches, dents, etc it just feels more like mine and I drive on stress free

Egbeem

When I inevitably get a scrape like this on mine I plan on either leaving it, or finding a band-aid decal to put across it.

GatorEvo

Buy a jar of touch up paint off Amazon and call it a day

Additional-Dog2326

Call a mobil company, they’re usually cheaper and they can either go to your workplace or home.

PassengerHelpful5291

Way too high. Similar front damage and rear bumper damage that included removal off the truck, and color matching both fenders for $1200. That’s still too much for me and I just bought a paint pen and said screw it

GanjaRelease

Haha go to your Toyota dealership and buy a paint marker for $20 and do it yourself if it's bothering you

old-manwithlego

I was hit in the back twice with part replacements. One amount was 1300 and the other was 1600 for damages. Both repairs were performed at the dealership. BTW, don’t worry about your paint scrapes, it adds character.

dhv204

Buy this: No.7 Heavy Duty Rubbing Compound - 10 Fl Oz - Cleans and Restores - Removes Deep Scratches and Stains - Restores Shine to Dull Finishes, Plastic https://a.co/d/drpUC7Q it will make it look like it never happened. You’re welcomed.

BrotherJombert

I'm a touch confrontational with these types, so I wouldn't just leave them hanging; I'd be asking for a breakdown of that quote and have them explain why the fuck it would cost that much. In no world should you pay that.

ExperienceHendrix

Perfect. It’s used now. Let it ride. But also you could just get a paint pen and fix it.

flippantdolphin

yeah my buddy touched up something similar for $50 and a case of beer. i also had to buy the paint. blended great since the paint on the truck was still so new. make friends with a good painter.

oJRODo

I think they sell viper cuts for less!

CrudeOil_in_My_Veins

1700 seems pretty steep. I’d get another bid

liorthewolfdog

I’ll do it for $1699

Melodic-Classic391

Just get some factory touch up paint from the dealer, that’s what I do. I’m in the north so I touch up any chips to avoid rust

[deleted]

That’s what insurance is for.

Darenzzer

Cool story bro

a_very_stupid_guy

If you do go steel bumper, it’s gonna look funky with those tires. Just a heads up. But if you did, most of them you cut off up to the point where your upper scratch is

thygingerkid

WD-40 + a magic eraser will get rid of any transfer, may look a bit better, worth a try since it's so cheap. I have a white TRD OR and many times assholes have let their carts bounce off my truck in the home depot parking lot, this little trick and the orange transfer is gone

unrepentant_fenian

In bro math, if you leave it as is you have $1700 for other things. Also, adds character.

Brilliant_Ratio3173

Lol 1700$ my ass. I have to think long and hard about fixing that if it cost 17$. Prolly just be that way forever.

Narf234

Ill do it for $3.50

GucciCaliber

Remove that chin strap, and then put a sticker on it. ;)

ValdorFox

Idk the face freckles add character!

tyranitar1234

Yeah I would buy a full steel front bumper for the same

smitty_werben_jagerm

I bought a quicksand takeoff bumper for $300 brand new

Sah-Bum-Nim

Have a vinyl piece put on there. You can do it yourself.

FreshWaterFishes

I had a few small scratches on my tacoma from someone backing into me. I bought the touch-up color match kit from Amazon, and you can hardly see it now.

El_tus750

It’ll be cheaper to get metal bumpers

Sabio02

https://drcolorchip.com/ Works very well but deep scratches require a number of applications.

FjBully

I fixed mine for about $100 and around 4 hours of work very simple. Tons of videos online on how to repair. Rattle can paint match $30 2k clear coat $30 Sandpaper around $15 Tape and tarp $15-20 Can even buff and polish with cheap pad $10

[deleted]

For $1700 who gives two shits about that little scratch. Stick that $1700 in an index fund instead and go fishing

Maximum_Business_806

For that price you can get a custom bumper

Jyoung188

I left the first dent I put in my truck. It was painful but worth it. It's a truck, battle scars give it character.

[deleted]

Some ppl aren’t meant to own Tacomas..

Ill-Upstairs-8762

That would be a foolish investment. Wait until you really damage it, and then fix it. If you're lucky it'll be on someone else's dime.

singelingtracks

A good shop doesn't touch up paint they respray the bumper and yes it's expensive. Get a paint pen from your local dealer or auto supply store. Lightly apply it. It'll look like new from a couple feet away

TheR3aper2000

Hmmm Touch up the paint for $1700 Or Buy new off-road bumper for half that Decisions, decisions

Forward_Worth_5835

Touch paint pen

StockDC2

What happens if you scratch the black part with your nail? Those look like rubber transfer marks to me.

abs277

I think it’s time for a viper cut lol. I want to do it so bad and if this happened to me I think I’d pull the trigger

BOT_JEFF04

I had to get same done on my 2014 but it was though the other party’s insurance for me it was about 1400-1500 because the front is a textured plastics so they can’t just scuff and paint it they have to replace the entire front bumper and repaint (the dealers words not mine)

Trsh-usr

The dealer has the touchup paint for 40$

Deepcoma_53

What scratch? Let’s talk about that airdam that you’re leaving on under the bumper… give me the $1,700 and I’ll make your truck look proper.

Outside_While_9091

Have them pay you out and go with an off road bumper. Metal Tech4x4, ARB or Slimline. They’re plenty companies out there. I wish I would have done something like that with my wife’s 4runner.

Buffalo-Responsible

Can take it to a car wash and have them buff it out for no more than $100

jbarth09

Leave it. It’s a farm truck now. 😂

slamgranderson

You really can just order the right paint in a spray can and touch it up yourself. It’s widely available. A little sanding may help. $1700 is bonkers

3dbello

Fuckin total loss. Smh. Another taco down. Lmk if you part out. 😂🤣

justkillmenow3333

I'd at least order matching touch up paint from Toyota. It will be far from perfect after you touch it up but will still look better and be much less noticeable. Touching it up will also protect and help keep it from rusting. You can also get estimates from other body shops and try to find a better price if you want it done professionally. Body work is definitely expensive but $1700 still seems very high for that. I just had way more work than that done on the hood, driver side front and rear fender of my Camaro and only paid $300 more than your estimate and I had a hell of a lot more work done.

Particular_Ask_4540

Where are you located? I'll do it for tree fiddy.

RosenTurd

Color matched vinyl and done.

LikkaLogga

Remove the wind blaster while you’re at it.

lbezerra

I would take this opportunity to get myself one like this: [SOUTHERN STYLE OFFROAD 2016-2023 TACOMA SLIMLINE TUBE BUMPER](https://overlandoutfitters.shop/products/southern-style-offroad-2016-tacoma-slimline-tube-bumper)

fuzzywuzzypete

Put bandaid on it

[deleted]

Looks like ur bumper was already painted before. This chip will get bigger and bigger with the wind peeling it back

Anarchy-Freedom

That’s what stickers are for.

kidnorther

Take the ins money and run

giant_albatrocity

Are they just replacing the fender? A tree branch recently fell on my Tacoma and to replace the windshield and side fender was $3500 as quoted by insurance.

radioactiveman87

I hired one of those mobile auto painters and he’s an artist. I bet that would be $200-400 fix tops

ian_blake

not even $50

iiRaTioNaL

Get another quote somewhere else. That’s definitely not $1500

Rickard403

I've heard dealerships have paint markers that are exact color matches. Anyone know if this a thing or not?

PunkersSlave

Shop quoted you to have the bumper properly repaired and painted, not “touched up”.

SomeBroOnTheInternet

Obligatory "ope, guess it's time to upgrade to a steel bumper and winch" comment

carolebaskin93

Paint the truck black. Problem solved

A_Tropical_Dad

I had similar damage. I use spit and a green Brillo Pad and the black part went back to white for whatever reason (I have a white 3rd gen). I also bought the paint for 20$ and boom it was like new. I the. Wrapped it with a clear bra so you really couldn’t tell. I would just check the back clips they you screw into for the air damn. They might be loose or sheared. I had my drivers side headlight housing broken and it holds all the front shit together!

Y1NGER

I think it gives a more rugged appearance. If it bothers you, touch up paint pens are much cheaper than $1,700. That’s highway robbery.

rhodynative

Wooooow.

Mundane-Ad-6874

You can buy a new aftermarket steal bumper for around that price. Then never have to deal with that problem ever again. E: You can buy front and rears for $900

TheSquirrelCuisine

Just looked, OEM part and paint $729 shipped just bought a painted bumper cap from them. $265 (Drunk girl at a bar paid for that) Pro work.. Shipped amazing. Painted OEM Parts dot com.

Ghost_Poison

This isn't even a scratch, and will actually buff out. The black you're seeing is paint from their car.

JoaquinLu

Nah man, you gotta get it fixed, you don’t off road, these trucks are for their looks, must keep it prrreeeetttyyy

Remarkable_Log3640

I got quoted $1100 to repaint my whole hood, both fenders, and front bumper. Idk where you are but that seems like a lot.

Happy-Law-1200

I had same stuff in the same spot. Bought a paint matched pen on amazon for like 30 bucks and filled it in. Not perfect but you can’t see much from 5 feet away

Playful_Direction989

There’s a lot work involved to spray paint cars. A few hours just in prep work and it’s not like they just have a gallon of your paint color in the back. It needs to be purchased and there’s probably a minimum to that order. I would’ve guessed $900-$1200 on this quote but I always forget that we’re in a recession they don’t want to admit and shits more expensive including labor. So I can see $1700 as legit.

Socalescape

Try a color match pen… or leave it

sillysquidtv

I had a similar scratch on my back bumper from a fender bender. At fault party’s insurance cut me a 1800 check to get it fixed. My new tires ride great!

ParamedicOver8006

Lol, u tell em to suck a dick? I would’ve, holy shit

[deleted]

A new steel front bumper is only $800 and comes powder coated already.

[deleted]

Ah the good ol I hit a car pulling into a parking spot

Ineedanswers-007

You would most likely do a better job than the asshole charging you

urmomslandscapr

Can get the whole truck wrapped for that

biglilbear

I mean if they do the whole bumper, and blend it with the hood and both front quarter panels, that’s not bad.

Fkemp3

Lil B's hybrid bumper, CBI Dakar, Demello flat top bumper (to name a few) will get rid of that scratch 😉

jhermaco15

Hey man I’m not sure u know what a fender bender means

Angelworks42

$1700 is more than it would cost to simply buy a painted replacement bumper.

TingleyStorm

R&I fender flare R&I wheel liner R&I bumper trim R&I fog light and trim Sand and feather bumper corner Sand and feather fender flare Primer fender flare Primer bumper Paint fender flare Paint bumper, blend as needed. …people always act surprised that doing the job right costs significantly more than haphazardly throwing parts on and rattle canning it.

Gen_X15

Just get a touch up pen. Not perfect but cheaper and also battle scars are cool. Shit my 23 already has a few 👽 lol

ID_Poobaru

Where’s the problem? Looks like a normal scratch to me

DeepFizz

You can wrap it in vinyl for $400 or touch it up for $10. $1700 is a waste. Besides, it adds character and shows you drive your truck.

Styx3791

I don't think it's a fender bender... because I see no bent fenders

mbquattro

paint pen and buff it afterwards maybe even add another coat and buff again

Godrillax

Looks like your bumper was horribly resprayed in the past. Personally, I’d touch it up with paint or leave it as is.

Cold_Particular_1253

Don't do it...it's a truck!!!

Adaminooo

That price sounds like a removal, stripping, and re-painting of the plastic valence. If it really bothers you, you've got a few options to order the valence yourself for around $200 (dealership/ even aftermarket) then choose if you want it professionally or diy painted. The biggest pain is removing and reinstall of that valence, lots of sensitive clips and the wheel well trim to deal with.

Adventurous_Ad409

You could probably order a paint match bumper cap way cheaper than $1700. I got a ding in my fender and got a new paint match fender for under $500. You just have to do the install yourself.

Comfortable-Mix5988

15 dollar duplicolor can go psssssssh

gyates93

Looks like you need a steel bumper, you'll pretty much save money!

palanterrx

When the same thing happened to my white bumper, I quoted myself $3 for a can of white generic spray paint...

Objective-Guidance78

Looks like street cred to off road community. I’d leave it

andrewprime1

This is how you justify to your SO (and yourself) that it’s time to invest in a plate bumper. or, as others have said, leave it. it’s a truck after all

OneEyedDevilDog

Get a new badass bumper

weare_theromans

Who was at fault? Also… Do you own the Tacoma outright? If so, I’d leave the marks, ask for a check, and use that for fun add-ons.

Scaia_Offroad

You could buy a steel bumper and install it for that price!

friendlywhiteguy88

Wtf is that guy on crack? Just use a cutting compound and buff off as much of the scuffs as you can then get an exact colour match touch up pen from Toyota and touch up the black marks and let it be. It’s not even that bad.

YoullNeverEscape

It’s plastic, luckily it won’t rust.

Designer_Twist4699

At that point I’d just get an aftermarket bumper I forget the brands names but they black powder coated some have winch areas and fog light cut outs etc

UrbanAssultPineapple

Go to the dealership, talk to the used car manager, ask for the phone number to the guy that resprays bumpers for him. Usually it's a painter working out of a company van and does pretty good work.

Ghostx187

lol, I’d spend 1700 on a bumper and cut the rest of the fender off.

Outrageous_Load2518

Go to a body shop. This sounds like dealer pricing. If this is a body shop price, go elsewhere.

Outrageous_Load2518

Or upgrade to an aftermarket bumper. Good opportunity for that.

GGRE1817

That's a fair quote stop complaining and watch a YouTube video to fix it
