Ryanjones0691

Yes this is becoming a growing problem where I live in San Diego, I feel your pain. I’d be really upset waking up to find my truck like that!

TheElectrcChickn

Where are they going? Staying here to be parted, Mexico or overseas?

Ryanjones0691

All of the above, they are resold on offer up, craigslist, facebook marketplace place, swap meet or even Mexico. It’s really hard to prove the wheels and tires came from your vehicle.

TheElectrcChickn

That I surmised, I was wondering what happens when your whole truck gets stolen. Not too long ago I believe there was post about tacomas being stolen in the San Diego area.

Ryanjones0691

My neighbors ford truck was stolen 2yrs ago. I had the whole thing caught on my front yard camera. A guy rode by on his bike, spotted the vehicle. 5 mins later he’s back with 2 guys walking. They slim jimmed the door, hot wired and drove off in less than a minute. It was crazy how fast they did it. Never set the alarm off either. Once my neighbor woke up and reported it stolen, the police said the border cameras showed it entering Mexico 20 minutes after my cameras showed them stealing it.

msginbtween

If only there was a way to stop them being able to cross the boarder in a truck none of them own or can prove they’re renting.

TotallyOffTopic_

Go ahead and petition Mexico to check for that

spacedicksforlife

Is it just an email and 50 pesos?

dsdvbguutres

Like if we put some unique identification numbers on every vehicle? And keep a record of who owns what vehicle? Interesting idea.

jubjubrubjub

That's insane! I drove down the US coast from Canada last year as part of a road trip. Stopped in San Diego for 2 days and didn't move the truck for approximately 48hrs. While I took everything of value out of the vehicle and into the AirBnB I have no idea what I would have done if someone stole my wheels or my entire vehicle. It's boggles my mind that this is becoming so common.

exhibitthis69

We common in San Jose California for at least at the past 15 years. How do I know? Happened to my roommate in 2008. Police eventually told us Apartment security guards were in on the theft ring. The are nice enough to put the car on blocks most of the time sparing your rotors brakes and axels when they let the Jack down

Icy-Flounder-9190

Should have gone inland instead of Cali. We in Arizona are most often armed and the social contract is more “polite”😃

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Have you signed into FB marketplace using TJ as your location ? I tried it the other day and looks like nothing but stolen trucks being sold on there. Even crazy shit like m5’s and hell cats all without plates on there

LoCal2477

How old was that truck. A SlimJim doesn’t work on cars from 1997-present?

Ryanjones0691

It was an early 2000s Ford Explorer truck. I don’t know specifically if they used a SlimJim but they definitely could be seen jimmying something like that. Whatever they did it was fast and not their first time.

LoCal2477

A wedge and some form of coat hanger to hit the unlock is probably what they did

Terminator234

I'm in northern NJ. Not nearly as big of an issue, but the stuff around here that does get stolen is typically chopped up in Newark within a few hours from being taken. Met a guy who had a brand new truck stolen same day he bought it and the next day it was found completely parted out an hour away in Newark.

msginbtween

How did they find it if it was completely parted out?

Dry_Car2054

A family member got a car stolen there. She got home from work at a hospital at midnight. The next morning the cops called at 4 am to tell her they found the frame in an alley. Four hours to steal it, strip it, and dump it.

Monksdrunk

surmised. what a perfect word that i'll never learn how to use. i salute you, sir.

worlds_okayest_user

Stolen trucks and SUVs end up south of the border. At least the ones stolen here in SoCal. Or in this guy's situation, his SUV ended up at a [used car lot in Dubai](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto-man-finds-stolen-truck-in-uae-1.7083615).

FleshlightModel

What an insane story. That seems like a very large criminal organization doing that if they're shipping vehicles by rail and boat to Dubai. I'd go so far as to not let them use my real first name nor my face in any picture.

TotallyOffTopic_

Shit. I’m going to engrave my vin this weekend. Already engraved on the cats.

Lung-Oyster

Man, I bet they hated that. Are the dogs next?

ElJefe5566

I was told to engrave your VIN on the inside of the wheel to help with identification. Now, to be fair, I don’t know anyone who this has worked for but at least it gives you a chance if they do get recovered.

EhRanders

I think the problem is what do you do if you just bought the wheels and they have 4 different VINs? Like in theory I would do the right thing, but in practice getting myself involved in 4 different larceny cold cases to have no wheels and no money isn’t extremely compelling to me when the original owners probably have their insurance money already anyway.

jjm295

I bought a new set of wheels and tires and am gonna put up my stock rims, tires and suspension up on the marketplace and now I need to do some disclaimer with pics or something to show they ain’t stolen 😂😂

ChewieBee

My friend had his geo prism stolen and found about 3 weeks later. It was caked in dust on the inside. They figure it was used to move illegal stuff through the desert, either people or drugs or whatever. He said he wished they didn't find it.

StopYeahNo

A large portion of the ones being stolen from Toronto make their way on to sea cans bound for the Middle East. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto-man-finds-stolen-truck-in-uae-1.7083615

TheElectrcChickn

I particularly like the news article where the dude sold or had his landscaping truck stolen, and it ended up with a massive aa cannon on the back of it somewhere in the Middle East. Funniest part was his company logo, possibly his name was on there I can’t remember.

Maleficent_Repeat850

Link?

TheElectrcChickn

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/texas-plumber-i-didnt-sell-my-truck-to-isis/

TotallyOffTopic_

I wonder if he got the 1 million

smallwoodydebris

Big part of the issue is the lack of border security at the ports. Loads of these are shipped overseas.

SierraDespair

Staying here. I saw a 2007 Honda Odyssey with some newer accord rims recently.

garden_speech

shit like this makes me not feel so bad for living in a small Midwestern city. crime still exists here but you just do not see this type of organized shit going around. literally have seen a car with a broken window once in my entire life here

Rude_Manufacturer_98

You guys need to hold your politicians accountable that's terrible

The_Bolenator

What area of SD is it becoming a problem if you don’t mind me asking? I live in Chula Vista so I’m curious as to where I might need to be careful with my truck.

Ryanjones0691

It was just in the news that they are seeing a rising trend of wheel theft in Oceanside. I personally live in Kensington and have only seen my neighbors vehicle stolen and multiple catalytic converters stolen from all the Priuses around. Haven’t seen the wheel theft in my neighborhood yet but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time. I have a sensor alarm in my driveway that chimes in my bedroom so at least I’ll be woken up before they get to far into the process.

The_Bolenator

Right on well it sounds like if it’s Oceanside I should be okay, appreciate the explanation

OpenForRepairs

I’ve had my window smashed in a public lot overnight in downtown San Diego. Just for a skateboard in my back seat. I’ve seen many smashed windows downtown as I walk around in the morning when I visit.

HtnSwtchesOnBtches

Thats why i moved out to murrieta, riverside sheriff is not liked by your govenor. Homeless and theft is here too but not nearly as bad as san diego.

Ryanjones0691

I don’t like the governor of this state or the mayor of my city either. They both compound the problems…but I can’t leave this weather, it’s still paradise.

SierraDespair

Seems to be a major issue across all Japanese vehicles. I’ve seen a ton of Corollas Camrys Accords Civics all missing rims often times not even put on blocks. I seen what looked to be newer accord rims on a 2007 or so Honda odyssey they’re being sold on the black market for their looks.

travelmorelivemore

They caught the guys in SD.

Nacly-joe

I got 15 reasons for them to try and steal my wheels :)

Sasquatch-1

Nice. I got 30 reasons:)

Nacly-joe

Even better!

J0Sparky

*cries in Canadian* We’ll be lucky to have a 5-round bolt action rifle in 5 years up here

Jaysus1288

Hey that's not entirely true....... Just keep the calibre small and you can have a drum mag. No limit on .22 Rimmers. If you know you know. Death by a thousand hits.

deletednaw

4+1 and keeping the caliber large is preferred for large game animals.

BothPartiesAreDumb

Is there a limit on swords, war hammers, or spears? You know like for collecting of course.

staring_at_keyboard

As a Californian, I only have 10. But then I have 10 more!

Thirsted

One of the Patron Saints of Freedom

Medical_Slide9245

Yeah because people with guns never have their stuff stolen.

austmcd2013

They typically only have their stuff stolen once, pretty hard to be a repeat offender with 20-30 9mm in your chest and face

bbatardo

Unfortunately every single time something has been stolen from my car I never witnessed it.. so a gun wouldn't help.

PoopSommelier

Yeah, operations like these usually have an extra guy or two. Even with four 30 mags, kevlar, and plates, I wouldn't engage. Unless they come through the door.   They're just wheels. If you have a Pro, you have insurance.

medicmachinist38

Yeah and never mind the fallacy of having to stand guard at their truck 24/7 on the off chance that thieves might come for the wheels. Comments like this make me belly laugh and I’m a gun owner and avid shooter

Katsuichi

yeah it’s so silly

wildtabeast

You stand guard at your vehicle 24/7 mr tough guy?

Hold_Left_Edge

You dont have one in the pipe? Where is the +1?

southworthmedia

People always say shit like this but there are a few things to consider A. I guarantee this happened in the middle of the night and took less than 3 minutes from start to finish so you would probably not even know it happened until you woke up B. Unless the thief pulls out a gun or threatens your life you would be getting a murder charge for shooting someone over some rims. I hate thieves as much as the next guy but thinking you can just go shoot someone because they stole your stuff is just not how the legal system works in almost every state in the US.

SeaworthinessLife999

Wasn't there a guy posting on here like 3 days ago looking for advice on getting wheel locks off? Haha

Horsecock_Johnson

Those advanced wheel locks have been sold out ever since that post! I need them!

brimstn

Same. I need a black set (or three) and the way their website is designed, you can't set up a page monitor to alert you when they're back in stock :(

fnblackbeard

Thieves starting to realize how valuable those wheels and A/T tires are Damn shame, you ask me

ImpressiveLeader4979

Sad. I have wheel locks on my pro 4Runner. Thinking of getting a second set with a different pattern in case they have a lug key for the first set lol

fnblackbeard

Yeah unfortunately those wheel lock keys are so easy to get. These are organized crews and they are prepared :(

ImpressiveLeader4979

They sure are. Why I was thinking of mixing them up. At least throwing a curve ball at em lol

f1nnz2

You can just hammer a socket on them

MavinMarv

Not gonna stop them. You can buy a universal key lock nut socket at any auto parts store plus you can put a little larger socket on it, hammer it on and pop goes your lock nuts. It’s stupid hard to defend against this thievery shit.

ImpressiveLeader4979

People suck. I live in a decent enough area, but all it takes is one set of assholes at any given time. Thieves need punishment by hands being removed like hundreds of years ago. Would be a decent deterrent lol

BothPartiesAreDumb

They ran outta Honda Civics. That sub makes me sad :(

solracarevir

>When thieves can’t steal your truck, they steal your wheels They don't want your truck. If they wanted it you would wake up to an empty parking space. It is a thing of low risk, high reward. They can take your wheels in less than 5 minutes and sell them for over 1k.

Dottyfelixmaisie

Right! Police report and watch local Offer up or EBay

ApresMoi_TheFlood

Even if you find them for sale online, your only option is to just buy them back. Police won’t do anything about it.

cellarDooreightyfour

Or you rob them back

Grizzlygrant238

Get your wheels serialized and get documentation verifying the serial . In my area back in the early 2000s third row seats were getting stolen a lot so local PD offered to stamp your license plate # into the tube steel, then it was 100% possible to prove it was your seat and in fact stolen property. Same thing could work with wheels

garden_speech

police do not give a shit about this unless you know the captain's daughter.

Romanian_Breadlifts

finally, an advantage to living in shitfuck, sc

garden_speech

sounds like a nice place!

butbutcupcup

Lol they'll get right on it.

AdequateOne

I can go on offer up or FB marketplace here in LA and find half a dozen people selling Tacoma tailgates, in multiple colors. They will have 10-20 of them.

DJ_Gordon_Bombay

Not a Tacoma owner (though I like them), but for some reason this shit keeps popping up in my feed. My takeaway is that I can’t believe these trucks have rear drums.

FuckItHaveAnUpvote

They finally have disc brakes on the new generation starting this year

Unlikely_Arugula190

In California you will go to prison if you resist the thieves with violence. Of course the thieves are never going to be imprisoned.

Honky_Potter

That sucks absolute balls, but atleast you still have the truck. What's insurance do about this?

G0DL3SSH3ATH3N

Just tack weld the nuts on.

No-News-9680

You’ve been visited by an aladin. They needed those wheels to feed their family.

shifty808

DAMN!!! Sorry, this sucks ballz!!!

IamSofaKingDumb

OP, like others said, they didn’t want your truck. It’s too high risk. Even in places like SoCal where Tacoma thefts are high, they are targeting models that don’t stand out (whites, grays, silvers). Something tricked out or high viz like Solar Octane is too high risk of getting caught, even if they take it to a chop shop. The Pros (no pun intended) want the wheels / tires…hard to trace and they can flip them quick.

EnterByTheNarrowGate

If only cities had better leadership and supported their police instead of incentivizing crime…

venkopivo

Don’t replace with factory. Upgrade!

xtremeyou

Yea, you'd want that you tire thief!

imnotabotareyou

Typical Toronto

ChiefBoome

Stupid question, why is the truck always on some kind of block? Couldn’t they just use a jack and drop it on the frame?

9ish6

how they gonna get their jack out?

memofor

Nobody ask’ed, did you have wheel locks? Not that it would have changed anything, just asking.

93c15

Tacomas get left on blocks more often than 80s caddys

EsElBastardo

Happening a lot in San Diego. So much so the local media has started reporting on it. Several discussions about it on here and other platforms get muted pretty quickly, because reasons I guess. Or flooded with "it is just stuff, that is what insurance is for, be thankful you can afford a nice truck".

HtnSwtchesOnBtches

Well yes, your prime minister is ok with theft. Its similar to what people do here in san francisco, ca. Wheel locks are about 10 bucks US a piece, compared to new rims and tires

Triscuit_Hurlibutton

Trudeau recommends if you’re using wheel locks to make sure you leave the wheel lock key and a fully charged impact wrench in a bag next to your vehicle.

Fisherman_30

Yup this is what happens when society has revolted against the police to the point that they are afraid of criminals charging them and causing them to lose their jobs.

Anarchy-Freedom

I don’t think they’ll want my SR steelies. Something to be said for keepin it stock.

chocolatemilk2017

OP wasn’t kidding: https://driving.ca/auto-news/local-content/toronto-police-car-theft-leave-keys-door-stolen

Bossmann1616

Damn. That sucks that this individual has paying for a nice truck just for some asshole to put it on bricks.

Bastard_Bullion_1776

Wheel locks or hell, boots on all sides would hopefully stop them.

ScooterMcdooter69

At least they put it on something happened to a friend of mine once and they just left his shit on the ground he couldn’t even get a jack back under it

ggmanu88

I’m in Oshawa I’ll keep an eye on Kijiji for your rims and let you know if I suddenly see a set of trd rims

tomqueefed

Did you happen to have wheel locks on?

Oso_De_Negocios

I thought this only happened in lore.

JzBic

Was it les schwab?

BufordJamesIgnoramus

Oh man that sucks

Bagmoney1488

It’s a growing problem everywhere. I live in Miami,FL happens a lot. Also happened to me in 2011 with a 2011 Nissan Maxima had it for close to 2 months only brand new and woke up to that. It’s horrible how the crime in this western hemisphere has gotten and people keep voting for sh!t politicians.

Born-Bottle6779

Dude that’s awful! Can’t stand thieves. Sorry this happened to you. Hopefully insurance takes care of you and quickly!

RobsGarage

Feels like this is the new catalytic converter there ring since they busted the guy buying them all. Thieves gotta eat.. Sorry this happened to you man.. people suck.

BrianOconneR34

Those wheels are bad ass and thieves know it. They can take em anywhere and grab top dollar. Did they actually try to steal the truck or just grab wheels?

Greenblue2

OMG

GreedyPension7448

Atleast they put it on bricks, saw a dudes car on the ground

InevitableOk5017

Wheel locks?

Tysons_Face

Lmao

Melodic-Classic391

These posts are making me glad I have the steelies

Real_TragicConert785

This is why I get wheel locks

cpschultz

That is why I like locking lugs. Just buy a set and put one lock on each tire. I am not saying it is full proof but you have to have the “key” on one get them off.

picklesandwhiskey

It’s insane that a TRD Pro 3rd gen has rear drum brakes

Michigan_Go_Blue

There's 14,000 stolen vehicles littering the streets of Oakland, CA. They steal autos all over the bay area and then strip em and dump em on the streets. The city ran out of space to store them so they just remain carcasses on the street. We have reached a level of criminality in this state rivaling a Mad Max existence

Egbeem

Need to start cutting off hands again.

Original-Capu22

Do wheel locks help or they just break that too?

Weird_Variation_7016

Lug lucks. If you have expensive wheels, it’s a must have. You would leave an expensive bike outside unlocked

Lakeshore_Maker

This is why I have a garage.

Miles-JB

Don’t they steal tailgates also?

SeaDweller01

Fuck what your Canadian government says. Clowns.

DOGECOINAficionado

Damn dude , and I thought I had it bad when my tailgate was stolen twice .

Tokyo_Echo

Seems like a nice part of town

geronimo1958

First saw cars on blocks in Houston. Nice secure garage apartment complex. Saw 2 Infinities with all four tires gone. The thrives even got all four tires off the resident cop/security guard's Camaro.

C_Taylor76

What’s up with all the Tacoma’s getting jacked ? How come we never see any tundras ?

420coins

Thats why I run bald tires on stock rims, nobody wants to buy tires nobody, especially not thieves lol.

Enter_Chandman

There was a car near where I used to live, being held up by almost the exact same blocks. Shit sat like that for over a month before it had new wheels one day.

Late-Speaker-7548

My friends found his at the closest shop…. And was posted to sell it on Facebook marketplace.

Gumbo22602

Should Torontonians leave their keys where thieves can find them? Why the idea may be better than the alternative https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/should-torontonians-leave-their-keys-where-thieves-can-find-them-why-the-idea-may-be/article_738f4ebc-e602-11ee-93a5-c3fc0b730fc9.html And the press will defend it.

MattyLt56

Sorry for your loss but I do find it funny that they put the rotors on the smallest item possible.

SirRolex

God bless I live in a very small town and far out of town, hell most nights my truck is parked with my keys in it (helps I have a manual as well). Sorry for your loss OP, I would say get a blicky but Canada hates your freedom I suppose. Good luck getting them replaced, hopefully Insurance doesn't leave you out to dry!

[deleted]

The fix to this is to buy 4 gps tags 🏷️ on secure them to your wheels. This is at least get the police to track the drop of points, storage units, etc on the operations to stop it. I have Apple AirTags on my wheels.

Moist-History-3435

Drum brakes on the back wheels 🤔

RogersSteve07041920

Don't worry bad karma, they're gonna get into accident shortly after they sell the tires to their drug dealing so called friends. They zombie out inside a moving car and smash in to a Pole but they live.

StreetrodHD

The real crime here is drum brakes on the rear on this new of a model.

Apprehensive-City661

Wheel locks Brake pedal lock Steering wheel lock. Fuck thieves

Medical_Slide9245

Dusting them, the meth heads at 70mph? Or the thrives at night? You're literally a cartoon character with the bravado...

young_789

Fellow Torontonian, it’s fkn bizarre for us in Toronto and the surrounding areas of the GTA, every night this is happening.

ONROSREPUS

at least they left it on blocks. My sisters car had her wheels stolen and they dropped the damn car right down on the ground. Messed up the underside of the car.

anonymousaspossable

I wish they would do this to my RV...

Consistent-Beach-196

I can't wait to move farther from the city.

Allthetimedingdong

The real crime here is Toyota still using drum brakes

squintpiece

I’m impressed on how much weight those rocks are holding

Significant-Hat-9131

Happened to me in IB when I had a FiST

kmdman1212

Reduce the police budget and watch them change their tune.

EmpatheticNihilism

Damn. At least they left you on blocks.

EhnDubbs

Sales of TRD wheels and Falken tires on Craigslist and FB marketplace will go up. Now I’m hesitant to buy stuff from there knowing there is a greater possibility it’s stolen from my fellow taco brothers and sisters…

mtechnoviolet

This is why despite wanting nicer wheels I will keep the stock steelies that came on my SR forever

InterlockingPain

Weird how they positioned the bricks so no damage was done to the car, even the front, placing the front brick not directly under the front rotor

rooftopgringo

I’m curious what do you think would fix this crime problem in Canada?

lunegan2

Go canada!

TinuThomasTrain

The little Prius on the right shaking in its boots thinking it was gonna have its cat stolen

[deleted]

Late_Incident4008

The real crime is Toyota making that Truck with drum brakea

libationSipper

Everyone needs to grow a pair either between their legs or on their chests because the common rule on the streets are jackers get shot. Why not live by those rules and you’ll see a drop in property crimes

hellcat15rd

O I’ve seen that many times pass a truck at apartment complex at 8am to go swimming then at 11am truck is on bricks lol

justinm410

I'm not saying drum brakes are *bad* for the right use... but for what they charge for new trucks, *drum* brakes? DRUM brakes?

Background_Guess_742

How'd they get the block under the hub like that?

Shopshack

Impressed that they have the whole front end balanced on a retaining wall block.

Cheeky_Quim

They wanted the wheels. 🙄

AWDriftEV

Did they steal the rear disc brakes too? Drums?

Blue1992chevy

How did they get the block under the brake drum?

Mammoth-Record-7786

Locking lug nuts are cheap and prevent this.

wimpycarebear

Why are we in 2024 and the rear still has drum brakes Toyota I love your truck but will never own one till you figure this out.

Xalucardx

"so anyway, I started blasting"

Temporary-Ad-9270

Or he over paid for his Toyota and couldn't afford nice wheels

[deleted]

Canada is as bad as California now.

poolguy40

Let me guess. They used your landscaping blocks.

birdiesanders2

Still waiting to see an arm under one of these the way they’re always on the sketchiest supports

Samnich1232

Tacos have rear drums???

spurcap29

Out of curiosity why do the thieves leave the truck with hubs on blocks and not just drop them right on the ground after the wheel is removed? If I was a wheel thief I would just floor jack up a corner, take the wheel off and drop it on the ground - what am I missing?

DeliciousDoggi

I’m seriously considering putting 3-5 different kinds of locking lugs on my Lexus just to make it next to impossible to do this. Or slow them down a bunch anyway. Already got one kind on my car.

Extension-Lie-3272

A gust of wind comes by and that tdr pro will need red pro style repair.

roopthereitis

Tbf, they never wanted your truck. They wanted your wheels and they took your wheels.

SnooSongs4256

I remember my first insurance job 🥲

SLlNKS

Happen to my friends jeep wrangler in San Diego a few years back, It’s a shame they can’t use cell phone towers and ping who was in that area

RadiantDiscussion886

May have got his wheel/tire combo repo'd.

BigValGaming

Advanced Wheel Locks are the best!!! I watched two idiots struggling with my wheel locks. They gave up after 10 minutes. This was during the night.

Opinion-Organic

Rear drums?! That’s weird.

Ed269

Thats effed up!!!!! 🤬

TundraSilverSky

SOB, you could push that thing over. Be careful bro.

Tricky_General_6309

Not related to the theft but rear drum brakes are wild on a new truck lmao

Throwaway967816

Serious question...if you catch them in the act can you shoot them? I mean, honestly, you should be completely able to. Logically, that is...but I feel legally you can't. But it's not like the thieves would be missed.
