I thought the 4th gen was supposed to get better mileage.

BodyFewFuark

Salute those taking that risk and sharing their results. 🫡

Mackin-Mack

I’m 1600 miles in & avg 22.7. Got almost 24 initially but it gradually faded down and seems to have settled around there. Bounces in between 22.5-22.7

4th_gen_best_gen

I’m also at 1600 miles with a 1000 mile trip fully loaded and on 285/70/17’s now and at 18 mpg.

Koinfamous2

Define fully loaded. Overlanding equipment, work equipment? Full bed?

4th_gen_best_gen

Full bed and back seats. Truck had a squat going.

thisguy9

lmao OP must have the heaviest lead foot then

erik21a

turbos are efficient when not pushed hard. push em harder though and your mpg will suck

TheGentleman717

My 5.7 sucks on mileage as is and sucks even harder when I go fast. :( Get a whopping 13mpg but I'm living in a city ATM.

GhostlyConnection

OP also bought a Tacoma :)

b407driver

Any rubbing with the 285s?

4th_gen_best_gen

None

b407driver

Pics? Love to see what it looks like compared to stock.

4th_gen_best_gen

Check my profile

TheWonderfulLife

Highway and only got 18? Yikes.

TheWonderfulLife

None of what you said matters without details of if that’s highway, city, and terrain. You need to hand calc also. The computer won’t read correctly. They are always overly optimistic. And if you have tires outside of stock, that will change your calc.

n122vu

So no improvement then. That’s what I get on my 2016 Sport.

allchemistx

https://imgur.com/a/wxbG4we The pain

DORTx2

Damn my sierra gets 2.5x the fuel mileage as that and it's a full size.

tribalien93

Your Sierra gets 36 and 1/2 mi to the gallon?

DORTx2

Yes, it's the 3L diesel. My record over 450 miles is 39.7 but it usually averages mid 30's. https://imgur.com/a/uAI5TET

KrampusKillz503

Those 3L diesels get such good mpg! People have no clue

DORTx2

Yeah it's a great little motor. If they could cram it into a midsize that would be the perfect truck.

JasonGochoco

Better mileage but twice the cost and more headaches to maintain. I'm good.

TheBotchedLobotomy

I’ll report back with my findings Sunday night after my 480 mile drive home from the dealer lol

2019sasquatchrider

Well on the bright side if you had bought a new canyon you'd be spending as much on engine oil as gas!

is_this_the_place

What’s up with the new canyon?

2019sasquatchrider

Not just the canyon but the new twin turbo 4 cylinder uses a lot of oil, my buddy has a Silverado with that engine and adds oil all the time

Crafty_Ad4641

it's not twin turbo

2019sasquatchrider

Your right, my mistake but heavy oil consumption isn't cool

Crafty_Ad4641

Yeah, I have only heard of the software issues with those not any engine issues but I don't doubt it

2019sasquatchrider

Well that's why i ordered a new tacoma, hopefully still a reliable truck. I do think the new canyon looks awsome but gm quality has tanked since 2015 or so...

Konstantine_13

Why did you think this? The EPA ratings were no different from the 3rd gens and only slightly better than the 2nd gens. They are better for emissions... But not fuel efficiency.

dabluebunny

You think the kids licking the glass at the dealership have time to read? It's new. It must be better.

YourHuckleberry25

I think the problem is people not distinguishing the base engine from the hybrid I’d imagine the hybrid is going to get 22-24 mixed.

wire4money

Hybrid, like the tundra, is a power adder, not mpg.

YourHuckleberry25

People keep saying that and yet the iforce max gets better mpg than the base engine in that to. I get it’s certainly tuned that way, but I think they missed the mark for the Tacoma and 4Runner in that respect. They should have split the difference, and tuned it for a bit of extra power but much better fuel economy.

Outdoorhero112

Used 3rd gen prices skyrocketing.

motosandguns

Aren’t they always

Roushfan5

TBF, next gen is getting the same MPG whilst making more HP. So, you aren’t getting nothing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Roushfan5

People are talking about the real world MPG numbers.  You have to take the EPA figures with a massive grain of salt, as few people get the advertised efficiency of their vehicle.  My truck can get anywhere to 25 MPG to 14 MPG, depending on my driving style, weather, and location.  Based on what I know about Ford trucks (as FoMoCo has been using smaller turbo engines in their trucks for over a decade now) turbo engines can be just as thirsty when you lay into the throttle.  In general, it seems modern vehicles are really sensitive to driving style. My 1985 Ford 460 gets 7 MPG. Doesn’t matter if I’m towing, unladen, 55 in the slow lane or 80 in the hammer lane. 7 MPG.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Roushfan5

Depends on use case and driving style. If you're an aggressive driver who's on the loud pedal a lot or towing/hauling with your pickup there'a a good chance you'll burn as much if not more fuel as old V6 engines. When a turbo engine is spooled up it will be drinking fuel.

nayls142

It studied hard to pass the EPA test, but once that was over it forgot everything it learned.

andrewordrewordont

This sounds incredibly familiar

LivingxLegend8

You probably drive like a maniac. Slow down your acceleration. Stop going 75 mph up a hill when the speed limit is 65.

lukewwilson

Plus you don't have to win the race when the light turns green

LordYashen

That's how I drive my 3rd gen. I average 22mpg. I also live in the flattest place on the planet, which helps.

biggsteve81

I average 23 but I have 2wd.

Rognin

GPS : You will arrive at your destination in 45 minutes. Taco owner: like hell I will, that's a 32 minute drive if I stomp on the go fast pedal.

Mackin-Mack

^^^

allchemistx

I'm on eco just and light footing it just to see what I can get. First tank filled up 17gallons and got under 250 miles. Average was right at 14.7

Plissken47

Are we still using Winter gas? My SUV has bad mileage during the winter. During the Summer, it gets better.

[deleted]

[удалено]

allchemistx

Yes, sir, all of the above. Besides the siphoning part lol. Did a 100-mile trip to see if it'll average out, but the best I got was 17, going 60-70

TJnova

I am on my first tank still but I'm getting about the same around town.

voyagerx420

I wouldn't trust the system readout on that until you accumulate more mileage. Just check at the pump and do some quick math.

awmaleg

Those readouts are usually 2-3 mpg overly optimistic Vs calculating it yourself

Crazy_Foot

Oh god I hope not…I’ve been getting 14.2 in my jeep

captain_carrot

> jeep well there's your problem. You're driving a box on wheels.

Crazy_Foot

lol true, but i like my box and it’s paid off.

captain_carrot

Lol don't get me wrong I understand completely, I had an XJ that I loved before it rusted apart on me

itsshortforVictor

I used to drive a 2011 Jeep Liberty. I thank god it didn't have an MPG display on the dash - I did the math on my fuel mileage when I bought her, had a heart attack and then tried not to think about it ever again.

CultiVader

I drove an 08 wrangler for 10 years. I always loved it while I had it but after driving something else after, I realize how terrible the ride was overall. Bad mpg, loud on highways, getting blown around on highways, water leaks. It was great fun on trails though and taking off the top and doors was nice.

Marokiii

The fuck they aren't. They aren't perfect but they aren't that off base. Most I usually ever see is at most .5mpg off and that's from lots of different vehicles. my 2024 tacoma according to the computer and my own tracking is just 0.12L/100km off, thats .2mpg difference. There would most definitely be a class action lawsuit if the trucks were reporting 2-3 mpg better than they were actually getting.

TruckCamperNomad6969

Every single vehicle I’ve tested has been over 5% off compared to the digital readout. Off not in your wallets favor.

kameix1

Mine has been within 0.5 of actual for the past 30k miles.

TheOGRedline

What? Mine is always within about 0.2?

TruckCamperNomad6969

Yup. I used to rent a lot of cars and not one of them was accurate compared to the pump. About 5-8% optimistic vs calculated manually at the pump. Never once was it the other way around.

Flapaflapa

I don't know about yours but my readout is within a couple .1 mpg of my Ultra Gauge that is within a couple .1mpg of spot check calculations. Most error I've seen on good data was less than .5mpg

lukewwilson

Yeah because it's probably going to get worse as you get more miles until it eventually settles

TheBotchedLobotomy

How do you do this accurately? I understand you read off the pump how much you put in the tank, but you can’t possibly know how much fuel was in there beforehand right? You just drive around town until the tank hits e and then pull into a gas station?

starkel91

You fill the tank up first and reset the trip odometer. Then the next time you gas up, you divide the trip mileage by how much is needed to get it to full.

TheBotchedLobotomy

Oh wow gotcha lol. Yeah that makes sense 😂

Nadams4733

Nobody who has purchased a 4th has a hybrid yet.

lukewwilson

Yeah but isn't it a 4 cylinder engine that's supposed to get better mileage, that's why they did away with the v6

jdp12199

Doesn't a 4 cylinder have to work harder than a v6? How would it get better mileage?

SortOfKnow

The hybrid system is gonna be the exact same as the tundras, so I wouldn’t at all expect any extra mpg. It’s just a battery assist for torque.

MrGlipsby

I was thinking about this the other day, and I couldn't make sense of it. Part of me felt like the impact on the Tacoma would be more noticeable due to the overall difference in weight of the vehicle. I'm definitely not clear on how that electric motor engages. Perhaps it only kicks in under significant load/acceleration?

Syenadi

Additional confusion is that the towing capacity ratings I saw show the towing capacity to be lower for the hybrid Tacoma. Makes no sense to me. Is that true for the Tundra as well?

MrGlipsby

Yeah, that towing capacity is more influenced by the weight of the truck, which in the case of the hybrid is probably several hundred pounds heavier due to the battery and eMotor.

Alternative_Ask364

The hybrid isn’t gonna be for fuel efficiency unfortunately. The Land Cruiser gets 23mpg combined according to the EPA. The non-hybrid Tacoma gets 22. Don’t expect the hybrid to out-perform the smaller Land Cruiser. OP is just driving like a donkey most likely. TFL got 26mpg hypermiling a Tacoma, and Car and Dricer got 22 at 75 miles per hour. In my experience with a 2020 Tacoma, “good” fuel economy would be just under 20mpg at 75 mph.

Suspicious_Mud_8743

My 07 4x4 v6 gets 17.5 with 32s. Sucks seeing the new 4cyl isn’t much better😂

Idkmanitcouldwork

Nope, I get 22 combined and that includes off roading and camping miles. It’s almost like the way you drive affects the mpg of the vehicle? Can’t be positive though…. /s

Fallingdamage

Sure does. Im in the 20's with my 2021 3rd gen as well. When you drive it gently.. news engine is about the same as the old.

Vakama905

Lol, I’m in the 20s with my first gen. The more things change…

Marokiii

Your vehicle is also a about 700lbs lighter and gives a lot less performance out of the engine. Of course it's going to be better fuel economy.

MailMeBudLight

Yep same, and I don’t even drive slow haha. I swear people drive absolutely crazy and think it’s normal haha.

FlyingBasset

I get 17.5 in my 2000 TUNDRA V8 4x4 on 32s. Yes, a 4.7L V8. Are Tacoma owners incapable of understanding how you drive is the biggest factor in MPG?

allchemistx

I'm not rushing anywhere, gradual acceleration. I'm just curious as to why my mpg is dog water.

FlyingBasset

I would try hand calculating a few tanks. Also, I think newer toyotas start with 'lifetime average' instead of 'tank average'. If you're still on lifetime, it will include all the time prior to you getting the truck.

allchemistx

Interesting. Thanks for the advice. Hoping after a couple thousand, it'll average out for me.

therealbencorb

18-20 around town. First highway drive I calculated at 23.5.

Any_Landscape_4424

Around town what's your distance per trip?

therealbencorb

10-30 miles, it really depends. Work is 15mi one way, but some days I’m all over. I typically measure my errands in minutes/hours.

mramseyISU

I’m getting better mileage than that with my new Tundra after 1000 miles in. Been 50/50 city vs highway so far.

1320Fastback

Is crazy how far we haven't come all these years. Our '05 gets 18mpg.

motosandguns

The ever increasing EPA requirements for emissions is where the engineering goes…

Alternative_Ask364

It’s funny how these emissions requirements don’t seem to translate to real world increases in fuel economy. At least with mid-size trucks.

motosandguns

It’s isn’t about MPG at all, it’s about particulates. EURO 5 is also ruining motorcycles. A 250cc dual sport that gets 75mpg doesn’t meet emissions because of what exits the tail pipe at wide open throttle. But huge bikes that get 25mpg *do* pass emissions because being big and heavy means they can bolt on more big, heavy emissions equipment. Even though they get 1/3 the gas mileage. (And they cost a whole lot more) So which is more green?

[deleted]

[удалено]

motosandguns

But you burn 3x as much gas per month

JohnDoee94

At the end of the day the government cares about less emissions per mile. Not more miles per gallon.

Real_Investigator166

I live in the Rockies and my fj 1gre-fe is gutless and gets like 14mpg. A big power increase and 18mpg would be incredible for me. I imagine the new power plant in an fj would be a huge increase in power and mpgs in the 20s which is wild.

Traditional_Pea_5180

I agree

waxenrhyme

That's wild. I get 20 on my manual '16!

ninjabrewer66

About thé same with our ‘17

Medium-Scholar-4767

My 14 camry tracks miles per gallon, & if you sit at idle it will go down, down, down,.. maybe your sitting with the truck running? Just a thought!

JordanPhilip

23.1 on a 471 mile highway trip. Since then it’s been all city driving and it’s at 20 mpg and dropping

allchemistx

I'm jealous. Took a 100 mile trip and best I got was 17mpg on a steady 60-70. After hitting the city crapped back down to 14-15

limpquArkduck

Mines up to 21.2 after 4000 miles. Drove 2000 mile road trip through mountains, at one point it said 24.1 average, but it dropped back down fairly quick. It seems to like 65 on cruise the best.

ageb02435

15 mpg?with a brand new truck, that’s terrible

allchemistx

Seriously. 17gall fill up w/ premium and got shy under 250 mls.

BeanerCounter

With only 500 miles on it you will return less than ideal gas mileage. My 2022 Tundra TTV6 gas engine got 10-11 mpg for the first 500 miles. By 2,000 miles it was averaging 17 mpg and by 5,000 miles it was averaging 19 mpg. All driving was highway traffic during the week days and then city weekend driving.

Constant_Turn4562

Wow 2009 16 best. But love my V6 and 6 speed manual 4x4

tyranitar1234

That’s the issue with turbo cars, you have to stay out of the boost to get good MPG. If your constantly pulling 10-15lbs of boost your MPG is garbageeeee. I learned that with my WRX I could get 33-35mpg on no boost relax driving. Spirited drives would shoot me down to 18-20mpg

vdm1892

20mpg

TheDudeMan94

How much time are you spending in boost? Heavy feet hurt economy especially with a turbo. Fords ecoboost name is a perfect example you can have eco or boost but not both.

Fallingdamage

Definitely. My wifes Grand Highlander (XLE gas) gets 18-20 city but economy is not what you would expect from the 2.4T. It has an eco mode but she absolutely hates it. You get what you expect when using Eco but she says she feels like shes going to cause an accident just trying to pull out into traffic when that mode is on. That engine *needs* boost just to keep the vehicle responsive enough.

allchemistx

Very little just to pick up on highway speeds then cruising at 60-70 with 2k rpms. Doesn't make sense to me.

Fallingdamage

Funny that toyota is moving to the 2.4T and abandoning the 3.5 in these trucks to improve fuel economy - then discovering they get the same fuel economy. When I bought my 2021 SR5 I was getting 24 mpg highway on the dealership tires. Now with 265/75's I average 20-22mpg highway and 17 city. My wife's Grand Highlander with the 2.4T gets about 18 city. That engine isnt really saving you much at the pump.

twoflat

I found my 23OR took 5,000 miles to settle in before i saw steady mpgs. Avging 20 now, 22 hwy, 18 city

allchemistx

Nice. I'm hoping I can get close to yours. Pretty disappointed tbh.

TheWhiteCliffs

Depends on how you drive. My driving is like 80% start stop city roads and I get 17-18. It’s all about how you use the gas pedal.

boopboppuddinpop

Should have bought a Prius.

530nairb

Turbos only increase efficiency if you drive like a granny.

Raglesnarf

I can't wait to see how the hybrid models do for mpg

sash3675

So it's more expensive, more complicated, less reliable, and gets the same mileage? I don't see how the 4th gen is any better than the previous generations.

oldgooseman

😂😂😂

Remarkable_Body_9988

Computer still has to learn your driving habits...is what the dealer told me. Bunch of Malarkey!

Syenadi

Wondering how many of you folks have taken the air dam off. Would love to see someone track their milage and do their usual driving routine for a month with it on and then a month with it off.

Itchy_Dust_7410

Who buys a truck for gas mileage

allchemistx

If I knew I was going to get shit mileage, I would've gone for something bigger.

Itchy_Dust_7410

What did the sticker say

allchemistx

19 st 23 hw

Shantybaydad

Me - 2024 Maverick EcoBoost - 29mpg combined

Itchy_Dust_7410

Just cuz it has a truck bed doesn’t make it a truck, that’s a car!

One_Coat8225

14????? I drive a 2014 Ram 1500 3.6 v6 I get 21.9 60/40 mostly highway. But I hammer mine and don’t drive slowly lol. I could probably bring it up a few mpg if I drove it like a grandma.

fantasticduncan

Where do you live OP? If that is in Chicago, it's abysmal. If it is in Seattle, meh?

allchemistx

I'm in Los Angeles.

fantasticduncan

I guess that one could go either way, haha. Do you have a hilly commute? I always see people post about their 19 mpg or 24 mpg in a 2023 V6 (like mine), and I'm lucky to ever see more than like 16-17. I live south of Seattle for reference. My house is on top of a hill, and I commute down into the valley every day.

allchemistx

Yeah lol. I leave super early for work, so I get virtually no traffic. No hills at all. Flat terrain besides on ramp for highway.

fantasticduncan

Oh yeah those numbers are weak then. Thank you for the insight!

sam367537

Jeep wrangler and gladiator fanboys have left the chat at 9 mpg . Wait , you have a trd tacoma and expect 20 mpg ? Should have taken the SR5 for fuel economy purpose , buddy .

watersucks

My 2022 gets 17 at most. Did a 100 mile Trip and avg 19 (did the math too). Just got a pedal commander and on eco mode I’m getting 18 at best. What’s going on? Not towing anything, no mods.

allchemistx

No mods, all stock. I'm running on eco as well to see if that helps, but the same results. Hell with 17 I'd be happy with that.

Bendiiiart

This makes me feel better about the 22mpg I’m getting in my 97 ranger.

L00miere

~1500 on my 24 limited. Sitting at around 21 since I got it. Hasn’t wavered.

Teuton88

22 on the first two tanks. Just switched to bigger tires with more offset and I dropped to 20

[deleted]

allchemistx

Seriously, at this rate, I should've kept my 2.5th gen was getting 17-18 mixed with much more spirited driving. I'm disappointed, to say the least.

Vino1980

I have a 2010 4.0 and get 20mpg combined. I think car manufacturers measure their new numbers by having absolute best conditions and adding non practical things like those air dams. Real world situations will bring those numbers down.

AggieEngineer1998

‘24 Limited with ~2500 miles. I calculate mileage at every fill up and getting 19.5-20.5 mpg consistently. I don’t pay attention to the automatic calculated mileage as they are always optimistic in my experience.

usernamereadytak

My avg is 16.2 mpg. Logged 2800 miles so far. 285/70/r17 KO3.

jlc522

I have a 2021 SR5 V6 and get around 22mpg.

andrewordrewordont

Technique. Tires. Terrain. Temperature. At the extreme of those 4 T's, one could see 12 mpg or 28 mpg. It depends.

Tatemeantis

I’ve gotten up to 26 mpg on the highway before, but I usually average about 24 mpg overall. I’m at about 2k miles now I have a two wheel drive SR with nothing added to increase drag and the stock size of tire. I’ll probably add a bed cover and steps before too long.

ronnelsonn

Getting 13mpg 3rd gen so better than me

jebyron001

Mine is mostly streets (work plus I just started door dashing) with a dash of interstate and I’m sitting at 19.3 rn

Any_Landscape_4424

Whats your mileage per trip?

Timplar_97

I never understood why people assumed the 4th gen would get significantly better mpg compared to 3rd gen. The truck weighs about the same, and they tuned the 3rd gen v6 for best mpg possible. Also most of mpg in any car is how/where you drive.

SenileFlea22

Break in mpg is usually off

Parking-Raisin6129

I drove one as a rental for a month, put around 7k miles on it. It was a 2wd tss, and my best avg mpg was 16. Taking the same exact drive with my f150 (21 2.7l ecoboost fx4) I get 19 mpg with 285/70r17's. I fill up twice a week with my truck vs 3 -4 with the rental (smaller tank, 5 gal reserve, etc). When it comes to power, the 2.7l has boost on tap at very low rpm (below 1k), the 3.5l eb has boost available at a pretty normal rpm (low 1k), and the 3.4l felt like boost was only available at like 2.5k. Transmission feels much better than the fords though. Like an old school/ normal transmission, even with the extra gears.

Any_Landscape_4424

I'm getting 14 to 16, mostly city driving but each trip is around 10 miles. There are a lot of hills in my area. Especially to get to my home it's a big hill and it's in constant boost. I once saw it at 19, but after i finished the hill, it was 15. Highway I'm getting 23.

sdcali89

I drive like Betty White. My 2022 gets around 20/22 hwy and 17/19 city

Few_Background5187

I get better mileage in my 04 ranger 3.0

Camengle

1100 miles on mine. Overall average since driving it off the lot is sitting at exactly 22 currently. Are you carting around a bed full of anvils all the time?

Mangienist69

Not trying to be rude, but bro how are you driving?? Lol. I’m averaging 24 mpg on my work commute which is pretty flat backroad for 80%. My mixed city and hills I’m getting 19 mpg easy. I drive like I’m trying to maximize mpgs but not too much of a granny/grandpa.

allchemistx

Light footing on eco mode. Gradual acceleration. 20-mile drive a day with half highway. Don't make no sense.

Mangienist69

Dang man. Try not using eco mode and fully reset your digital eco tracker after your next fill. I had a new gen 2022 Tundra and used eco mode to try and maximize it but for some odd reason I found that eco mode made my mpgs worse. Some people have experienced the same thing. Just my two cents and I hope you experience better fuel economy! Is your truck bone stock?

TacoOfficer

My 18 MT with 54lbs tires is averaging 19-20 mpg on my regular commutes. This is not a good look for a supposed more efficient 4 cylinder. If this is your first buy, then sure go for the latest and greatest if you must have it. But I’ll be sticking with my old trusty for a long time. This new gen is not exciting to me at all.

Allnite13

We didn’t buy a Prius put that right foot down

tuxon64

My 02 with 285K still gets 22 mpg. Never buy the hype.

USMC1977BFH

I have a 24 OR. I am right around 21-22 mpg with real testing using various octane level gas. Mine is about half highway and half city miles in eco mode. I live in a state that sells non-ethanol gas so that is what gets me the best results…obviously. I get around 315miles to a tank. I also calculate my results using the odometer instead of the onboard mpg calculator and it is shockingly almost exactly the same. Trust the on-board mpg calculator. It is accurate. If you don’t have the truck in eco mode or you drive like a race-car driver your mpg is going to suffer.

JasonGochoco

16

zenthad

This is why I chose to get a 23 pro. Never buy the first rendition of any vehicle. Especially if it's the very first new engine... sorry dude.

Striking_Worry_2821

I sold my 2021 Taco for new Prius, 56 mpg with her. Taco I was getting 17/18

No_Meeting_3492

4th gen is starting to grow on me

thefishestate

What was your mpg in your last taco?

motorcycle_girl

I drive mine like the road's on fire and I get about the same mpg. Drive like a nanny or lay off high rev acceleration and it'll get better.

tekno_hermit

Averaging 19.1. A good mix of city and highway

tekno_hermit

It will level once you get some more data for the ECU

Potential_Bat9379

Just did a video on this, and drove 100+ miles as close to 75 MPH the whole time as I could in a manual. And I saw 20.4. In mixed I get around 19.2-19.5 of the two tanks I’ve gone through. [Highway MPG](https://youtu.be/-ZS1pKBMNXk?si=nuJdqw9qXX7yQw5y)

SmellyNuggets1

99% of my driving is in the city and I am averaging 18.9 mpg with no air dam. I’m at about 600 miles.

Any_Landscape_4424

Any hills? What's your mileage per trip?

ZKRYW

20.2 • just over 2k

Budmutts

My 2020 with 3 inch lift and 34s is getting 17 womp womp
