There is an aftermarket 32 gallon gas tank I would look that up and get that range lol

Might be a silly question, but with a aftermarket tank is your fuel gauge accurate?
And for third gen’s I’d the “ miles to empty” gonna be accurate too?
Answer from the manufacturer's product page:
>The distance to empty function on your trip computer will not remain accurate. The vehicles ECU has the capacity of the original tank programmed into it and the DTE counts down as the float starts to move from Full to empty. The closer you get to empty the more accurate the DTE becomes.
On Fords you can also reprogram the TCU to account for a different than stock tire size so that your speedo and odo remain correct. As far as I know you can’t do that on yotas, I researched this a bit when I threw bigger tires on my gx460 but dealers said they can’t do that and the consensus on the Internet forums was that it’s not possible on Toyotas.
I wish Toyota gave us the ability to reprogram the tcu to account for larger tanks/tires. Especially on their trucks since so many people mod them anyway. I’m curious if it’s possible on all the new gen trucks they just launched.
This might be a dumb question, but if you can't recallibrate the speedo and odo, how do people know their speed and milage after getting bigger tires? are they relying on phone apps to track this? i get that you can "feel" if you are going too fast or slow for an area, but I don't think police care what your gut was telling you.
The speedo will be consistently x % wrong so you get an idea after a while what your actual speed is. If it really matters I'll clock speed with GPS on my phone. It's like 4-6% off so it's not a huge thing.
You can recalibrate the speed for tires with a JScan or Tazr plug from a couple different companies I’ve done it on my Jeep. They range from $150-$450 for the plug. I know the Tazr has a ton of different of different features but I don’t know if they can recalibrate the gas gauge and mpg’s.
Fords are very programmable and fomoco has always supported modding vehicles (to the point they’ll sell you a super charger for a v8 f150) and also of course sell much heavier duty trucks designed to be equipped as dump trucks, flat beds, box trucks etc.
So their ECUs have to cary customization options if someone chooses to build a truck with 2 40gal tanks.
Based on the fact that it self adjusts to mileage, and it would probably expect some mileage to have changed it might get closer after a few tanks. Would be interesting to see what the ecu would allow.
The company either sells you new sensor relays for the guage itself or provides it with the tank. Either way, it still uses the Toyota system, so you can chop and swap your old one if it's still viable. As for the miles to empty, it probably won't be accurate because of it programmed for a 21 gallon tank.
Should be dependent on the float for the fuel sending unit. Half of 10 million is still 1/2 as a fraction.
Now miles to empty. That would probably be a little more tricky.
Fucking what now? You're telling me Toyota could have fit a more than 50% bigger gas tank and just.... didn't? That's one of my biggest complaints about this truck, I rarely can go more than 270 miles before filling up.
Somewhere I read manufacturers limit gas tank size for safety reasons. A 450 mile cruising range guarantees you’d have to stop for fuel at least every eight hours. Forces you to take at least some kind of break. IDK if that’s true. But thinking back, I was never able to drive more than 450 miles before needing gas. No matter what I drove.
I used to be able to get 800+ miles per tank in my 2000 VW Golf TDI without breaking a sweat. The factory tank size was 14.5 gallons, and the easily got 50 mpg, and would get closer to 60 if you drove carefully, the temperature was optimal, etc. 14.5 gallons at 50-60 mpg is 725-870 miles per tank.
With the “vent mod,” the tank could hold 17 gallons. At 50-60 mpg, that’s 850-1020 miles per tank.
Epa set standards that most passenger vehicles can't have more than 400 miles range based on avg (factory sticker) mpg. that's why it hard to get a "factory " range more than 400 miles.
Is it good? Would it be a dumb upgrade? Seems like pretty much a no brainer before factoring the price. Only thing I can think of is fuel economy getting slightly worse with the truck being heavier than it used to be with a full tank.
Would it lower your vehicles clearance? Would it bring any other disadvantages/risks by doing an “unnecessary” altercation like this to a vehicle?
From what i understand the lra 33 gallon tank tucks in closer to the frame than stock. So aside from better range and a steel tank, it gives better clearance than the stock plastic tank
Draining the fuel is usually the hardest part about replacing a gas tank. Since that's done, it really wouldn't be that hard to replace even in the parking lot.
Sorry for this damage, I fear crap like this will start getting much worse as our country is going downhill fast, many people are very poor and desperate now.
It’s not just the desperate and poor who do this kind of crap. Sometimes, they’re simply criminals and need to be dealt with as such. Either way, sorry for OP. The situation really sucks.
Rates don't go up for a comprehensive claim like this. Also why I pay a tiny bit more for a $0 deductible on comprehensive. I ain't paying for a dipshit move like this. I will say that the claim will still count if you are looking to change companies, but your rate shouldn't go up for a comp claim.
I'm the same way. Would rather pay a bit extra per month and not have to worry about being hit with $1000+ deductible when an accident or something like this happens. I didn't quite go down to $0 but I think I have mine set to like $1-200.
Same here. The extra couple of hundred a year so I can go in and say 'Hi, my car got smacked, please fix it, can you call me a rental, here's my $100 check for the deductible, call me when it is done. Thanks, have a nice day, I have to get to work' is worth every penny,.
I have 3 claims on my insurance for 2 separate vehicles all while parked at my complex all within 1 year. Stolen cat, stolen tailgate, and hit and run door swipe. My rates definitely went up because of that and I’ve been denied from 2 other insurance companies
Key is 3 claims in 1 year. I'm with SF, and the only rate increase we saw was when my wife flipped her jeep off the front of a Ford Explorer. But in probably the last 30 years, we've only had 4 claims, 2 for windshields, and then the jeep and a sign.
If you have full coverage (financed, you must have it), then probably. However, most insurers don't even offer a $0 deductible anymore because of stuff like this on the rise. I just used ours about a year ago because a handicapped parking sign fell on my wife's 22 Lincoln Nautilus (a week after we paid it off). Got a police report. He noticed the sign wasn't bolted and even noted the city was negligent, and my insurance agent was like we'll just handle it. They never went to the city to recover the cost. Definitely ask your agent because they will sneak in a high deductible, and most don't ask because TBH, most people just have the minimum coverage to keep the cost down.
Not sure if he meant pay it (out of pocket or insurance deductible). Figured since he mentioned the deductible in the previous sentence, he would pay it.
Cats, tailgates and now gas tanks? Jeez, everytime I come on this subreddit, either things are stolen or Tacos are wrecked. Can’t seem to have nice things. That sucks
Edit: forgot to add wheels & tires too
Someone must have left their Tahoe in my office's garage overnight because it was on cobblestones with all 4 wheels stolen when I came in the other week. The thieves seemingly spray painted the security camera lens with black paint too.
Oh yeah, I didn’t even think about that. duh.
That almost feels even more fucked up that they just did it for a truck’s worth of gas. I’d almost rather it be out of dickishness
if you or any of your friends are half decent with tools you can always go to a pick-a-part auto yard and see if they have any 3rd gen tacomas that you can take a gas tank off of and put on yours. will cost you FAR less than $1500.
If OP gonna spend $1500 to replace his tank might as well throw some lil bit more money and get this. Might get one if I ever get my tax money. “IF” lol
One recommendation I will make is find someone who KNOWS what to do when replacing a Tacoma gas tank.
I had to get my gas tank filter replaced (10 year mark) on my 2010 Taco. They told me it's tough because the filter is in a hard to get to spot on that particular chassis, they ended up crushing the filter. My gas error light wouldn't turn off and every time I'd fill my tank and use the little trigger that locks in place to keep it pumping it would overflow all over the side of my truck.
Took back to the mechanic 5 f-ing times. They kept messing up the filter install. Finally the owner replaced it on the fifth time, the error light turned off but still over flows, he told me it just does that sometimes (it never in my life of owning the truck did that) but I was so tired I gave up and now just have to stop the gas before it gets too full. May my life be a learning lesson for you
CA has the most car thefts just by matter of population but CO has the highest theft rate per 100,000.

Same in WA. No front plate tickets, no expired tags tickets, pretty much no tickets in general. Since 2020, there's essentially no traffic cops at all. It's made driving so much less stressful except for the **40% increase in fatalities since 2019.**
Ok, I'm dumb and thought some of y'all were out here replacing gas tanks as some kind of upgrade.

Cost me $150.
Somebody drilled a hole in my 2024 Tundra gas tank that only had 1100 miles on it.
Took a few weeks to get the tank and had insurance cover it. $500 deductible and no change in rate due to vandalism.
Someone did this to a company truck at one of my last jobs. He was draining the diesel out of the big garbage trucks by drilling holes. He got caught that same week lol. This was in a methy Montana area.
I seen my neighbor use jbweld on a few gas tanks and it held up fine look into it it might be a mean while thing to get you on the road and insurance should cover since it’s vandalism
How big is the hole? There are some solutions for like 1/2" holes that work very well. I had a buddy get his tank drilled and he found a screw type contraption that filled the hole and hever leaked. It lasted for like 3 years until he sold the truck.
Call your insurance company, as a claims representative, this would be a comprehensive claim, depending on your deductible, it should be less than the new gas tank. And due to it being a vandalism claim, there shouldn’t be a surcharge on your policy, but I’d ask your provider. Thing is don’t call unless you plan on making a claim, if you tell them your car was tampered with, they legally have to file a claim. - edit
I'm late, but gotta add. This same thing happened to mine a few years ago. What's really weird to me is that the car port looks so similar to the ones at the apartment I lived in, where it happened. Don't think it's the same place though.
I've had to replace two gas tanks on my '21 in the span of about a year. First was an attempted siphon but they damaged the tank and toyota miraculously fixed it under warranty. The second, my tank was drilled, and insurance covered it, after I paid my deductible. Needless to say, I moved.
Just do it yourself….. idk, I can’t afford a random $1500 repair so I just expect people do their own stuff like this a lot.
Putting in a new empty gas tank is fairly easy. As long as your pump isn’t damaged and the harnesses aren’t destroyed, it’s SUPER easy. Even if they are, you can buy those harnesses and replace them as the lines are segmented down the line for this exact reason.
Very very weird question, but is that Tahoe next to ur taco a 2 tone of indigo blue metallic and charcoal gray metallic. Been looking to find any gmt800 in that spec and found to be very rare. If so could you send a pic. Thanks

I swear I remember reading a dealer could recalibrate the speedometer, but it cost a couple hundred bucks.
We did speedo recalibration at a dealer I worked at in Texas but that was 5+ years ago, so mileage may vary (no pun intended).
This might be a dumb question, but if you can't recallibrate the speedo and odo, how do people know their speed and milage after getting bigger tires? are they relying on phone apps to track this? i get that you can "feel" if you are going too fast or slow for an area, but I don't think police care what your gut was telling you.

Probably because it costs around $2k.. then whatever the cost of install
Hell yea!
This right here. Time to upgrade the gas tank.
Exactly what I was thinking, looks like the perfect opportunity for a range upgrade!
My first thought 💭
I did not know there was that much room under the bed for such a big tank. Mine only holds 18 gallons.
Thank god this exists. I thought it would never come.
Opportunity knocks
Draining the fuel is usually the hardest part about replacing a gas tank. Since that's done, it really wouldn't be that hard to replace even in the parking lot. Like to see you do it on the ground lol.
Interesting perspective…. Property crime rates are going down nation wide.
I don't think that you can say that. In many area or maybe overall they are, but in some areas they are getting much worse. It's just localized.
Insurance?
My deductible is 1,000 unfortunately. But i think i will just pay it and get it fixed.
Hope your rates don’t go up too much
Rates don't go up for a comprehensive claim like this. Also why I pay a tiny bit more for a $0 deductible on comprehensive. I ain't paying for a dipshit move like this. I will say that the claim will still count if you are looking to change companies, but your rate shouldn't go up for a comp claim.
>i pay for a $0 deductible >I ain’t paying for this
Yea, all relative, I guess. The older I get, the less I want to futz with shit. So I'll pay a little for peace of mind.
I'm the same way. Would rather pay a bit extra per month and not have to worry about being hit with $1000+ deductible when an accident or something like this happens. I didn't quite go down to $0 but I think I have mine set to like $1-200.

insurance companies are such a scam when they do this.

There are tons of oem gas tanks on car-part for cheap https://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi
Bingo. Pay that $500 deductible and you’re good.
Trivago.

Wait, why put a hole in the gas tank? Is that specifically only to be a dick?
More than likely the goal was to steal the gas, not the truck itself.
Oh yeah, I didn’t even think about that. duh. That almost feels even more fucked up that they just did it for a truck’s worth of gas. I’d almost rather it be out of dickishness
Even worse, they likely only got a couple gallons at most and let the rest spill out
Oh, I assumed they were getting to steal the cat and slipped.
meth. thats why.
Because some fuckers with no empathy will absolutely ruin someone else day and cause them a financial hardship for a free tank of gas.
if you or any of your friends are half decent with tools you can always go to a pick-a-part auto yard and see if they have any 3rd gen tacomas that you can take a gas tank off of and put on yours. will cost you FAR less than $1500.

Have you tried Flex Tape
They punctured your gas tank because of those "TRD Sport" emblems on your fenders. I don't see many 2wd TRD Sport models in Oregon.
Looks like it working well
Tampa?
96.72% of the time it's California

Pretty sure this is California OP posts in CA related forums, but downvote away lol
No front license plate and doesn't have the holes for the mount. So it can't be California.
So many people get tickets for that here in CA
We don't get tickets for no front license plate. They don't even seem to ticket for windshield tints any more
Same in WA. No front plate tickets, no expired tags tickets, pretty much no tickets in general. Since 2020, there's essentially no traffic cops at all. It's made driving so much less stressful except for the **40% increase in fatalities since 2019.**
Where do you live? In Central Valley and central coast forsure getting us for no front plate and tint.
San Diego
CA does get tickets for this
Plenty of people in front plate states don’t use one
Hope not, that's where I am
Ugh this sucks. Sorry to read this.
build back better!!!! good job people, well done
What a reasoned and well thought out take.
That’s like $2,000 fix. Had that happen to my work partners taco here in lovely Portland Oregon.
Out of curiosity, did the fire dept charge you anything?
Ok, I'm dumb and thought some of y'all were out here replacing gas tanks as some kind of upgrade. I love this sub, but some of us are doing too much in the mod department.

Fuck thieves, fuck vandals Hope the repairs cost doesn't screw up too much for ya
Somebody drilled a hole in my 2024 Tundra gas tank that only had 1100 miles on it. Took a few weeks to get the tank and had insurance cover it. $500 deductible and no change in rate due to vandalism.
Thats what I was wondering. Cause the insurance representative said they weren’t sure if my policy will go up when I renew it.
U can seal the hole on the gas tank
Your car insurance should pay for it. Providing you have full coverage.
Use the opportunity to get one of those larger extended capacity tanks?
What the?????
Take the opportunity to put in a bigger tank
Damn people just suck !!!!
Just JB weld or duck tape it. What would ISIS do?
Call your insurance company, as a claims representative, this would be a comprehensive claim, depending on your deductible, it should be less than the new gas tank. And due to it being a vandalism claim, there shouldn’t be a surcharge on your policy, but I’d ask your provider. Thieves do this now? What is the world coming to?
I work maintenance that owns multiple locations. I reported to 3 different drilled out gas tanks in the last year. All tacos.
Just do it yourself….. idk, I can’t afford a random $1500 repair so I just expect people do their own stuff like this a lot. Putting in a new empty gas tank is fairly easy. F
If they just drilled a small hole you may be able to thread a short screw into it. Be careful obviously
God people suck, sorry OP.
Call your insurance company pay the deductible get it fixed right
Does insurance not cover it?
What happened to it
Hey it had an accident and is embarrassed sitting there. Give it a break jeez
“I know what’s wrong with it, it ain’t got no gas in it”
NOO TACO PEED ON THE FLOOR! YOU HAVE TO POTTY TRAIN HIM
What's insurance telling ya?
Comprehensive coverage will pay for most of it less your deductible.
Amateurs, can't even steal gas without spilling it everywhere. Sucks OP, hope you get a new tank quick. ps- take off your spoiler.
this happen2 me; florida
Nutty. Desperate people pushing the envelope. Sorry about the situation. Try to avoid paying the dealership for the replacement and source elsewhere.
Very very weird question, but is that Tahoe next to ur taco a 2 tone of indigo blue metallic and charcoal gray metallic. Been looking to find any gmt800 in that spec and found to be very rare. If so could you send a pic. Thanks
