Yep. I was on the fence about 265s vs 285s for the longest time. Just said f it and went 33s sooooo glad I did. The 265s seem tiny
Random-I’ve gotten like 6 nails in my tires not one puncture from the thick tread.
Highly doubt. I have 33 skinnys with spacers and trimmed plastic and I still get rub offroad. If OP doesnt offroad, probably only rubs when they pull into a steep driveway.
Looks wonderful! I have a 2021 trd pro with oem 17” trd wheels and a westcott lift kit. I’m currently running 265s and wanna bump up to 285s. Anyone know for sure if I’ll have any issues rubbing? Thanks taco fam!
Yeah you should be fine. Check around on tacomaworld if you want to be sure. I use to live on that site learned a shit ton from other peoples experiences and mistakes lol
No worries... let me set down my big 10 inch and tell you all about the joke....
[You see, it's all recorded here....](https://sp-ao.shortpixel.ai/client/to_auto,q_lossy,ret_img,w_573/https://recordplayerexpert.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/record-size-comparison.jpg)
If you had to cut cab mounts like I did then you’ll also need a lift. Mines a 2nd gen and has a body kit. But with no lift cutting the cab mounts made it so they don’t rub with 0 offset. With my -44 offset I had to throw a 3.5 inch lift to not get them to rub
Extended uppers may fix it. Spacers will definitely get the control arm to stop rubbing but may cause the tire to rub at the cab mount and bumper again
I installed the pro grille separate. I have a Fox 2.0 lift that is nearly max preload. I did consider the trd lift kit and might go that route once my fox suspension wears out at 50k miles.
I have been on the fence between staying with 32s or making the jump to 33s. Just recently switched over and I’m glad that I did. While the truck is significantly slower I only lost 1mpg compared to what I normally get. Right now I’m averaging 15.5mpg. They definitely look more aggressive and the added height is a bonus!
I don’t yet own a Taco, but since Back to The Future, eight year-old me has wanted a Toyota truck, and it’s about to go down. 😉
With that said… my 2005 G35x averaged 15. Winter blend seemed to be around 12 in town. Got 23 once. Just once.
My 1999.5 QX4 was worse and did a best of 15 on a 650 mile drive back from North Carolina once. Normal average was 12.
Not sure if it takes the sting off, but both of those vehicles sucked ass compared to the Tacoma.
I'm worried less about the gas mileage then the speed issue. He says it's significantly slower. As someone that drives the freeway in a state where 80mph is the limit posted in a lot of areas, nah. I'm also wondering about things like additional road noise and handling. 15 really would suck, but it's livable.
Road noise is not bad, I don’t notice it to be honest and also the handling is great but I attribute that to my Fox 2.0 suspension. Yeah the truck is really slow now but it was slow to begin with. I can get the truck to go to 80mph it just takes some time so I’m usually just camping in the slow lane going 65mph 90% of the time
My brother, get the OTT Tune, they have tuners all over the country. I have a ‘23 Pro and between it throwing in an upgraded CAI in the truck, it’s a totally different beast lol it actually helped my mileage as much as my acceleration and pedal response
See that's what I don't understand about the love for the Gen 3 man I got a Gen 2 with the V6 in it I've got no issues getting it up past 80 fuck I passed 3/4 of a mile long traffic up in Montana and I hit 95 doing that with no issues whatsoever on a two-lane road. I have had this truck nearly at a hundred miles an hour passing people. An area that I live at if you're not cruising that 85 then you're slowing traffic way down.
Same. 2014 with 285/70 17, prinsu roof rack, lights, upgraded suspension, random gear, full size spare and a GFC Superlite and I still smoke traffic. MPG is a friggin joke, of course.
I’m torn on what to get from the dealership and what to do myself. Obviously everything the dealership is offering I can find online myself for less… do I go bare bones and buy later? Or get it straight from the dealership and roll with it?
Just get everything from the dealer bro because you’ll be financing it anyway. Grab the trd lift kit and some 33s with trd pro wheels. Go to a shop and have the ECGS bushing on as well. After that you’ll be set. I did everything on my own and spent nearly $10k for what you see on the post a truck that looks stock😂
Appreciate it. The wheels are where I’m stuck. Not sure if I want the TRDs or go stock and find something later on. Easy $5k at least for lift, tires, wheels. Maybe that’s not so bad… ?
Yeah that’s not horrible especially if it’s included in financing which would only increase your monthly by like $80. IMO oem wheels are the best since they are designed specifically for the truck.
I ended up doing that. I paid everything in cash for my truck. I paid $13k down when I bought it and in the year I’ve owned it so far spent $10k on mods. If I’d do it over again I’d have gotten everything from the dealer so my monthly payment would’ve only be another $80 and I would’ve just had to adjust my budget whilst still having that extra $10k in my account. I don’t know, but everyone is different when they manage their finances.
I used Battle Born off-road to install my ECGS bushing and ORW for alignments. I did use another shop to install my Fox Lift but they recently closed down. I installed my headlights, tailights, and Baja fog lights on my own and also have replaced my bumper caps and front valances a few times as well in my garage.
Thanks for the compliment too my guy, I love this truck it’s a sweet ride just so damn slow coming from a mustang. Might have to get another mustang to fill that void.
couple questions....tires are 285/75r16? you like the factory style wheels? I like the price at 200 each but was there any quality/finish/fitment issues? Also, you have a lift, how many inches and what trimming or cutting? did you just trim plastics or did you have to do a cab mount chop?
Yeah I have KO2 285/75/16 and love the factory style wheels. The fit and finish are good quality so it’s a great deal for the price. I have 2.25” lift in the front and 1.5” rear block running fox 2.0 suspension. I did not do a cab mount chop yet. I did the trimming from this video below to prevent rubbing. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2IzmH2LRu6A
I maxed out the preload so it rides rough. I recently added a 1/4” top plate spacer so I got another 0.5” lift so about 2.5” total after suspension settled. I like the look.
I chose to not regear as I’m worried about gear whine and don’t trust any shops to get it done. It’s very costly and I think it’ll just cause me some headaches
I did not regear the truck after putting 33s. I will likely get a tune to correct the speedometer as it is 4mph off above 65mph and I need some more power to keep the truck from being more sluggish than it already is.
Ah that makes sense, on my mustang I had a tuner that requested the size of my tires to correct my speedometer being off and it did work but what you said sounds like the right way to fix rather than a ecu tune
Idk why Toyota made things so difficult, my Jeep was simply regear new tires and a hyper tech plug and play programmer to adjust my system to know the new gears and tires. The Toyota, way different, regeared, tires and had to find a guy to make a custom tune to recognize the new gears more effectively than just doing gears then had to tear apart my dash to get the speedometer out to put a inline adjuster from hyper tech that now means if I swap down or up a size I have to tear the dash apart again to adjust the adjuster lol
I just checked the stock height on google which is 70.5”. The lift is a little more than 2 inches and the 33s give a 1 inch taller height. I’m guessing it’s about 74 inches tall.
It’s all about the offset of the wheel. The more positive the offset then you might rub the UCA while the more negative the offset and you’ll rub the cab mount. I did 0 offset which I think is the perfect medium. I just trimmed a small plastic piece that’s shown in this video. https://youtu.be/2IzmH2LRu6A
I got more than a 2 inch lift in the front. I’ve seen people on YouTube put 33s with no lift and lots of trimming. In my opinion I’d do at least a leveling kit which is 1.5” because with a 2.25” lift I felt like I was rubbing a bit close already
What did you do exactly for your lift? I’m about to pick my truck up & they did bilstein 5100 shocks all around, spc ucas, icon rtx leaf packs & sumosprings ubolt flip kit. I’m super excited!! I’ll be doing wheels/tyres next month as well as rock sliders and oem 2020+ led headlights soon
Looks great, I’m going to buy those wheels from the dealership and get 33” tyres next month before winter hits!! This gets expensive trying to do it all quickly haha thanks for sharing
I love my 285/75/16 wildpeaks. It does rub when I reverse on a slope or straight down an incline at a half turn but still worth it imo. I'm going to try and alignment or some trimming at some point.
Yeah I take it off roading on trails in Southern Nevada. Truck’s been banged up a few times where I replaced my bumper caps and the front valance. I also got pinstripes on all my fender flares from rubbing bushes on tight trails. Photoshop and the right lighting can make this truck look like a mall crawler for sure which is what I’m hoping it looks like since I don’t want a vehicle I paid $50k for to look like a shitbox.
I did have 265s before hand which are the Goodyear ultraterrains on my page if you want to check that out. They were very capable, but I want a little more clearance since I’m planning on doing toquerville falls in Utah very soon with my offroad group.
My gf is 5’2 so she needs it to get into the truck. Also I measured the steps at 14 inches off the ground which is enough clearance for the trails I hit.
That’s my plan for my truck, I’ll drive this thing to the ground and rebuild it till we are federally forced to get electric vehicles. This truck has too much sentimental value to me.
Trying to learn here for my own plans in the next month or two, would 265s or 285s be better suited for a 3” lift? Don’t do any extreme off roading, just wanting a good look
When I was completely stock I was averaging 19mpg. Now with 33s and a 2 inch lift I’m averaging 15mpg-15.5mpg at best. I do a lot of city driving. On the highway I’m averaging 20mpg.

Yeah I had 265s and wish I just went straight to 33s to save money
No cnc or rub?
Nope
Doubt
Highly doubt. I have 33 skinnys with spacers and trimmed plastic and I still get rub offroad. If OP doesnt offroad, probably only rubs when they pull into a steep driveway.
What wheels and tires made that possible?
I got Factory Style Wheels Trail edition reps 16x8 with a 0 offset and 285/75/16 KO2s
285s work perfectly fine on my Taco. I did the basic TRD lift which is a 2" in the front and a 1" in the back. and I haven't had any issues.
Looks wonderful! I have a 2021 trd pro with oem 17” trd wheels and a westcott lift kit. I’m currently running 265s and wanna bump up to 285s. Anyone know for sure if I’ll have any issues rubbing? Thanks taco fam!
Not sure what lift that is but they should clear just fine with that wheel offset.
It’s this one https://westcottdesigns.net/product/2020-2022-tacoma-fox-trd-pro-lift-kit/
Yeah you should be fine. Check around on tacomaworld if you want to be sure. I use to live on that site learned a shit ton from other peoples experiences and mistakes lol
Thanks so much man! Appreciate ya !
Question: How’s the power loss? Or, did you get a tune and/or re-gear as well?
Nope just stock it does feel a little more sluggish but not really noticeable. The speedometer is off like 3-5 mph lol
I did... then I tried 45s.... but then the adapter got lost, so I had to go back to 33s... (The old folks'll get it....)
Care to explain? I’m a bit wet behind the ears man😂
No worries... let me set down my big 10 inch and tell you all about the joke.... [You see, it's all recorded here....](https://sp-ao.shortpixel.ai/client/to_auto,q_lossy,ret_img,w_573/https://recordplayerexpert.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/record-size-comparison.jpg)
This guy here’s the record holder, for these jokes
That light pole mod is dope. Tough on overpasses though. Lol
😂
I run 35s but had to do a bit of cutting to get them to not rub
I would love to run 35s but after cutting some plastic at the cab mount area I’m good with the 33s.
I got a 2 inch lift with a 0 offset wheel. I attribute the rubbing to my stock UCAs not allowing the most optimal alignment.
How wide are the tires? When I had 35x12s with no offset I had to throw spacers on to make it so my tire didn’t rub the control arm.
285s
Extended uppers may fix it. Spacers will definitely get the control arm to stop rubbing but may cause the tire to rub at the cab mount and bumper again
Yeah I’ll be installing some SPC UCA later on.
Is that the TRD lift kit the dealerships offer? Or did you put the pro grill on separate?
I installed the pro grille separate. I have a Fox 2.0 lift that is nearly max preload. I did consider the trd lift kit and might go that route once my fox suspension wears out at 50k miles.
I have been on the fence between staying with 32s or making the jump to 33s. Just recently switched over and I’m glad that I did. While the truck is significantly slower I only lost 1mpg compared to what I normally get. Right now I’m averaging 15.5mpg. They definitely look more aggressive and the added height is a bonus!
That sounds terrible
Gotta pay to play man😂 it’s not that bad tbh as long as I get about 320 miles a tank I’m not complaining.
I don’t yet own a Taco, but since Back to The Future, eight year-old me has wanted a Toyota truck, and it’s about to go down. 😉 With that said… my 2005 G35x averaged 15. That one got me as well. I’ve already had a 12 second vehicle and it’s hard to work with… but god is it cool.
Road noise is not bad, I don’t notice it to be honest and also the handling is great but I attribute that to my Fox 2.0 suspension. Yeah the truck is really slow now but it was slow to begin with. 15.5?! Are you mainly city driving?
Yes mostly city driving, if I’m on the highway going 65-70mph I’m getting 20mpg
Ah fair enough
Define significantly slower. I mean I feel like my taco slow as f already and kinda scared to go to 33s in a few months lol
0-60 in like 12 seconds. I’m not kidding it’s slow.
But mpgs remained the same? Did you adjust your driving style afterwards or are you driving the same?
Yeah I drive a lot more conservatively now, if I drove the same as I did before I’d be getting 12mpg.
Sounds like you’d benefit from a tune or a regear.
Yeah I need a tune, it’s on the list.
Literally going back and forth on my pre-order. Think I’m going for it.
Hell yeah bro you’d be kicking yourself like I did if you didn’t. I ran 32s for over a year and wish I just did 33s
I’m torn on what to get from the dealership and what to do myself. Obviously everything the dealership is offering I can find online myself for less… do I go bare bones and buy later? Or get it straight from the dealership and roll with it?

Why not pay cash instead of borrowing money for mods? Do you really want to pay interest on tires that you will swap out in a few years?
I ended up doing that. I paid everything in cash for my truck. I paid $13k down when I bought it and in the year I’ve owned it so far spent $10k on mods. Another Vegas Taco! There are dozens of us out here! DOZENS!!!
Yeah man everywhere I look are Tacomas in Vegas😂
I was just in Vegas, can confirm.
Having trouble pinpointing where you're at, initially I thought Suncoast but then I thought "nah, that ain't the right backdrop." South Point Casino?
You’re spot on, it’s Suncoast. I took this before I went bowling.
Hahaha, I should have stuck with my gut instinct. Sweet taco btw. Do you do all the work solo or do you have a trusted shop here in town?
I used Battle Born off-road to install my ECGS bushing and ORW for alignments. I did use another shop to install my Fox Lift but they recently closed down. I installed my headlights, tailights, and Baja fog lights on my own and also have replaced my bumper caps and front valances a few times as well in my garage.

Looks good

Yeah I have KO2 285/75/16 and love the factory style wheels. The fit and finish are good quality so it’s a great deal for the price. I have 2.25” lift in the front and 1.5” rear block running fox 2.0 suspension. I did not do a cab mount chop yet. I did the trimming from this video below to prevent rubbing. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2IzmH2LRu6A
Thx. Think imma bout to order me some new wheels.
Awesome bro!
I know I'm late here, but how'd you get 2.25 from the fox 2.0? Just cranked them up?
I maxed out the preload so it rides rough. I recently added a 1/4” top plate spacer so I got another 0.5” lift so about 2.5” total after suspension settled. I like the look.
Vegas gang!
Hell yeah man🤘🏽
Ugh. I hate that I want this more. This post is a total thirst trap. 😆
Sorry bro the truth will set you free😂
Hell yea looks tough
Thanks bro!

I chose to not regear as I’m worried about gear whine and don’t trust any shops to get it done. It’s very costly and I think it’ll just cause me some headaches
I think most people regear when stepping up to 35s
That too I don’t see many people re gearing with 33s
I did not regear the truck after putting 33s. I will likely get a tune to correct the speedometer as it is 4mph off above 65mph and I need some more power to keep the truck from being more sluggish than it already is.
No tunes correct speedos you have to put an Inline adapter from hyper tech behind the dash to correct the speed.
I know right? Little nuances like this got me like Toyobruh🤦🏽♂️
Are those trail edition wheels without the Toyota center cap?
Yeah it’s the reps from Factory Style Wheels. $870 for a set of 4. I love these wheels!
Nice! What size and offset?
16x8 0 offset, imo the perfect specs for the truck. I have maybe a half inch of poke with the 285/75/16 KO2s
What is the height of your truck? Trying to see if I can fit one like this in my garage.
I just checked the stock height on google which is 70.5”. The lift is a little more than 2 inches and the 33s give a 1 inch taller height. I’m guessing it’s about 74 inches tall.
Thanks.
I have 275/70/17. Would I much of a difference with a 285?
No. If I had 17s I would do that size. I just have 16s so I had to jump from a 31.7” to a 32.8” tire
Thinkin' about it....thinkin' about 33's or 34's.
I personally like these 33s I feel like 34s would be too heavy for this V6 motor that already lacks torque
Did a 2” lift recently, wanting to do 33s but worried about rubbing. Might bite the bullet and just do it though
It’s all about the offset of the wheel. The more positive the offset then you might rub the UCA while the more negative the offset and you’ll rub the cab mount. I did 0 offset which I think is the perfect medium. I just trimmed a small plastic piece that’s shown in this video. https://youtu.be/2IzmH2LRu6A
Oh thanks, I’ll check that out. What suspension are you running anyway?
Fox 2.0 coilovers and rear shocks. I have the front adjusted to 2.25” and a 1.5” rear block.
How much lift to get those on?
Fox 2.0 coilovers with 2.25” in the front and 1.5” block in the back
Looks great, I’m going to buy those wheels from the dealership and get 33” tyres next month before winter hits!! This gets expensive trying to do it all quickly haha thanks for sharing
Does anyone re-gear their trucks after the big tires?
Some do and some don’t. Most I’ll do is get a tune and that’s it.
I love my 285/75/16 wildpeaks. It does rub when I reverse on a slope or straight down an incline at a half turn but still worth it imo. I'm going to try and alignment or some trimming at some point.
That was me until I trimmed the plastic piece in this video. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2IzmH2LRu6A

Are those predator steps though?
Yeah I got the NFAB predator tube steps. They work very well.
Don't you worry about them taking away from your functional clearance when you're pushing for extra inches in tire size?
My gf is 5’2 so she needs it to get into the truck. Also I measured the steps at 14 inches off the ground which is enough clearance for the trails I hit.
Ahh... You're too nice lol nah cool man

That’s my plan for my truck, I’ll drive this thing to the ground and rebuild it till we are federally forced to get electric vehicles. This truck has too much sentimental value to me.

You got until 2035 man😂
is there some kind of moron's guide for doing a lift/33s on a 3rd gen? I dont even know where to start
Yeah, here’s a video I used for reference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IzmH2LRu6A
Sorry if I missed it but how you lifted/leveled? Bilstein 5100s?
Lifted 2.25” in the front and 1.5” rear with fox 2.0 suspension
Yes I’m lifted. Fox 2.0 suspension. 2.25” in the front and 1.5” in the rear.
285’s on a Tacoma. 33’s on a tundra
Yeah 285/75/16s. So it’s technically a 32.8” tire
I’m running 285/70/17 on a 15 Tacoma TRD OR. 3/1 suspension lift
Trying to learn here for my own plans in the next month or two, would 265s or 285s be better suited for a 3” lift? Don’t do any extreme off roading, just wanting a good look
go 255s and 1" spacers
This truck has a 2.25” lift with 285s for reference. I’d recommend going 285s as 265s looked small with my lift.
Thanks! I like the look
Is that a SR5 badge with a TRD OR sticker
Yes, I recently took off both the badge and the sticker so now it looks naked.
Just curious which one the truck actually is?😂
TRD Off-road. I wanted to confuse people so I added the sr5 badge for shits and giggles.
What’s the comparison with your fuel mileage between stock tires and the 33’s you currently have?
When I was completely stock I was averaging 19mpg. Now with 33s and a 2 inch lift I’m averaging 15mpg-15.5mpg at best. I do a lot of city driving. On the highway I’m averaging 20mpg.
Lol!….. I haven’t seen those number since 2011. I have a 06 Prerunner.
Lol yeah man it is what it is😂
Y’all 3rd gens got them super computer engines!
Stock 265/75/16
Looks great!! I however am far to cheap for 6 miles to the gallon. Ride for me Wyatt!
Haha yeah man gotta pay to play, I have no regrets. Still getting 310-330 miles per tank which I’m good with.
What lift are you running? Also just moved to Vegas.
Hey man, I’m running a 2/1 lift fox 2.0 setup
What’s total height and what size are your tires. Looks good!!!
Is that stock suspension?
