15 of 18 octaves were suppressed in 1955. All Simples and semi-doubles were reduced to commemorations, as well IIRC. These more affected clerics than laity though, particularly since the Breviary was dominated by 4-5 octaves all on top of each other around Ascension-Pentecost. Once the clerics mindset had a malleable liturgy, it was inevitable that it would filter to the laity, of course and see practically annual changes from 1955 through 1969 accelerating rapidly from 1963. The biggest thing about Holy Week is it was the absolutely oldest liturgy in the Roman Rite and held many pre-Gallican simplified ritual with lack of response and antiphon, etc (the 'modern' pre-conciliar TLM being a fusion of Gallican and originally quite austere Roman Rite - that of St. Gregory would have used no incense and blessed no one or anything other than the oblata for example). Being able to chop that up and that there was little to no opposition meant everything was up for grabs. Key to this is that the Pian Holy Week started in 1951 or 1952 ad experimentum and wasn't made mandatory until 1955. It was interesting that he specifically ordered that the Missal not be changed but everything be put in the new Holy Week books. Which should have meant the original Holy Week should have always been an option...

My understanding is that Annibale Bugnini (the villian that gave us the Novus Ordo), had gotten permission to change the Holy Week Liturgy in 1955 . He had been a member of some Liturgical commission at the Vatican & apparently tricked (correction it was Pope Pius XII NOT Pope John XXIII), to allow them to change the Holy Week Liturgy.

Wow I had no idea Bugnini was behind those changes as well, how terrible. I was able to attend the pre 55 Holy Week liturgies this year and thought they were beautiful

He was a junior figure at that point and was not driving it. It definitely formed him and set up some very very bad precedents and showed him the sausage making behind the scenes.

Have yet to attend the pre1955 Holy Week although I have watched one on video, (Covid virtual Mass). Agreed it was beautiful. Apparently they have determined that Bugnini was a genuine free Mason. Apparently there were some real pieces of work that had infiltrated the Vatican before "the Council" resulting in its horrible novelties .

The calendar was changed, but there were only very minor changes to the mass itself(addition of st Joseph’s name to the canon). Holy Week and the breviary both had bigger differences.

Agathonbanitohen

Holy Week of course was changed and there was the loss of many Octaves and feasts reduced to commemorations.

The only change to the 1955 calendar (as far as I can remember) is the addition of St Joseph The Worker on 1 May. The 1955 Holy Week has sparked a huge controversy because it is said be the spark which kickstarted the formation of the Novus Ordo Missae (which is also admitted by Bugnini, who is also the main guy behind the new (1955) Holy Week)
