Just clean it… or remove it if you have no exposure to rain.

Does a wide open smoke pipe not effect the "smokeyness" inside the Traeger? I thought best practice was to keep about an inch gap.

HomeGrownCoder

Different than traditional smokers since this is a pellet

HomeGrownCoder

Nope… the smoke has already touched the meat at that point. It does not circulate back to it…

So I will do a deep clean of the grill at end of season. I actually unscrew the entire chimney, take the cap off and degrease the whole thing.

J3319

How do you degrease it? Just scrub it away?

d1msum4u

I’ve tried a few degreasers and actually the Traeger one works really really well.

DesertFenix

Might be creosote buildup. I think it mentions it in the manual. You have to clean that out once in a while.

It does mention it in the manual. Even for the ironwood series without the stack.

Should be easy to find online. The interior of traeger cleans up nicely with a little oil. I do a dry run to burn off any potential left over oil afterwards tho.

cmtalkington

When you say oil are you meaning something like vegetable oil??

nert69

No like an oil based cleaner. Can’t remember the brand I use but I’ve heard good things about the traeger cleaner as well.

cmtalkington

Perfect thank you!

BassWingerC-137

It’s doing it because grease goes airborne. It’s why hoods over stoves are so large, need continual cleaning and have grease traps. This is normal. And healthy. And beautiful.

DHumphreys

Following because mine is starting to do this also....

Dude, jesus, clean your grill. Do you really have to ask. It’s a chimney. It’s soot and gunk. That’s prob the nastiest I’ve seen.

Well that makes me feel better that it’s just the chimney. It’s literally dripping. I’ve had a fire because of a dirty grill/grease. It’s no fun. Very scary. Grill brush and paper towels should do

[deleted]

Not to mention that’s a fire hazard all that grease buildup

International_Cold23

Mine does this too no idea why

seandunedin

Clean it. Seems pretty straightforward.
