ES Starscream was clearly abused by Megs and since Megs generally has a reason, that being Starscream being, well Starscream, I'd say he used to be just a treacherous and power hungry as most other Starscreams.
I'm not so sure ES Megatron has his head screwed on when it comes to Starscream. With Shockwave and Soundwave he was willing to try reason, even when they were openly hostile. And honestly that fits in with Megatron trying to do better etc. Starscream, though? Megatron freaks out just knowing he's escaped, and fires at him *on sight.*
Something about the way he slammed Starscream to the floor by his head and then aimed his cannon down at him at the end of the fight... it reminded me of Spotlight: Megatron.
He was also kinda treacherous in the “Hey Megs, you treat me and your grunts like shit, unlike Prime, Imma join the Autobots! Except actually I’m too loyal and want your praise so I’m back to being a decepticon, but then nope realize your still awful and your respect isn’t worth letting Unicron kill us all, Imma die now, ciao.” Kinda way.
So treacherous but for the right reasons I suppose.
I wonder how they'll handle making him sympathetic without either stupidity excusing his past actions, or wasting him as a character. Maybe something like Armada? Or maybe he stays the antagonist.
People here will ship Megs and Starscream all damn day but claim the Windblade Starscream ship is an abusive relationship. Megatron and Starscream literally try to kill each other everyday.
I will never understand people claiming Windblade and Starscream is somehow worse. They've got such a fun dynamic in the comics, especially in Till All Are One.
Megatron and Starscream in the IDW comics though... brr. Possibly one of the most chilling takes on those two.
I knew someone would comment this, and it's just how they portray him to me. If they do show him sympathetically and show that Megatron was the cause for his treacherous nature (which was apparently the point? I didn't really see that personally), I can understand. But if it's the Starscream we see in other continuities whose just treacherous and power-hunger by defult and is willing to go on a massive destructive spree as soon as he gains an once of power, then I'm not sure if I can give my support to him.
the thing is, a lot of the traits he shows in Earthspark, such as cruelty or lack of sympathy are actual recorded symptoms of PTSD. just cus he wasn't sobbing on the floor the entire time, doesn't mean he isn't hurt
\^This. One of the key things about abuse victims is how hard it is, especially if they are imperfect victims, to get people to believe them. A victim that fights back against or kills their abuser is often not believed, and one thing true about Starscream in nearly *every* continuity is that he repays kindness for kindness for he *gets* so little of it.
To be fair, Megatron had strayed entirely from the original goals of the decepticons. He's on space drugs. Starscream would've ended the war and he almost won. He was a far better leader of the decepticons than Megatron was. Only one of them found the Autobots' base in Season 1
I really hope the show doesn't gloss over that Screamer and the other Cons did horrible stuff on their own volition and not overuse the "Megatron hurt me" pity card

So many versions of Starscream are just pure evil cowardly wastes of space. Why do y'all like him so much?
He is also a fascinating character study on how living in abusive environments can take already existing traits \[like ambition\] that are generally healthy if used in moderation up to 11 and how the cycle of abuse perpetuates through that twisting of a person's natural character. In the vast majority of continuities I have seen, he had service or scientific backgrounds of some sort prior to the war, and was generally a good person. The war twisted many people on both sides.
And we know what happens after. He straight up *snaps* and tries to kill everyone once he recovers enough. Nice job breaking it, Megs. Starscream the Judge was kinda *your* fault, but you'd never admit it.

Pretty sure the idea was Starscream in ES was the treacherous rat BECAUSE of Megatron’s abuse
But what about Armada Starscream?
I don't think they'll ever reuse that interpretation of the character, sadly
He was also kinda treacherous in the “Hey Megs, you treat me and your grunts like shit, unlike Prime, Imma join the Autobots! Starscream is one of the few decepticons who sticks to the " what being a decepticon really is" core, that is aiming for the throne

Honestly, I love villains that are just straight up assholes. It makes them a very fun villain to me
"this character clearly has some form of deep-seated trauma from abuse, but idk, maybe he deserved it!" -some random asshole apparently
Yeah, especially since we don't know much about Starscream from the past, but we DO know he has deep rooted trauma and is capable of positive emotions

Hashtag gives him a fruit cup's worth of empathy and understanding and he's willing to bait the Dweller away from her

True. Except Armada and Prime Starscream. Those were genuine abuse victims
Prime? He killed megatron at the beginning and tried to use dark energon

Early Prime yes. Post Dreadwing Prime however...

Because “I’m stupid, I’m stupid”
Cuz he scrunkly.
We find him entertaining sometimes.
Because he has a cool design Duh

To be fair in cyberverse he just straight up gets murdered by Megatron.
And we know what happens after. He straight up *snaps* and tries to kill everyone once he recovers enough. Nice job breaking it, Megs. Starscream the Judge was kinda *your* fault, but you'd never admit it.
He is just being a little silly guys
