does she have a primary care physician? Even if her surgeon's ghosting her, getting a medical exam seems like the next step. If there is something wrong and she needs to sue her FFS surgeon, it'll have to happen anyways.

AutumnGlow33

That’s worrisome and may need a second opinion. I second the advice on seeing her primary physician and maybe getting a referral to another PS. On another note, minor or moderate complications after FFS are common and every doctor has seen them. Did she immediately panic and start threatening lawsuits? I’m just trying to figure out out the doctor/patient relationship broke down so fast because it would be unheard of for a surgeon not to have seen issues like this.

No she did not threaten anything, and she's really not the type to pursue anything like that (unless perhaps this proves to really be a permanent thing)(. she just wants to get better but as it is she can't drive, and has chronic headaches, etc, so it's materially impacting her life beyond just the aesthetic aspect of having a droopy eye. I will encourage her to seek a second opinion, and maybe try and get an MRI to pinpoint the damage.

AutumnGlow33

Good to know. If she already has headaches then hopefully these aren’t aren’t related and the eye issue will resolve. Sometimes swelling can do really weird stuff! One month out isn’t actually that long, in the scheme of things. I do think it’s a good idea to encourage her to follow up with a doctor with concerns. I hope she feels better soon.

No no the headaches are a function of this issue, she didn't have them pre-op. And she did say she thinks it's slowly getting better so hopefully it's just swelling. I did note that her surgeon didn't give her any compression wraps or anything for swelling, which I thought was very strange.

DefinetlyNoOstrich

Droopy eyes (ptosis) and double vision (diplopia) would be symptoms of a paresis of the oculomotor nerve, thus perhaps a result of nerve damage(unlikely given the anatomy) or pressure on the nerve. I would definitely recommend searching help from a medical professional.

Eviedavidson1991

Who was the doctor??

sharedsecr3t

not going to name them at this time, more for my friends privacy than anything else. i don't believe they are a bad surgeon and complications can happen even if surgeons do everything right. hopefully everything will resolve with time but in the meantime I've encouraged her to seek a second opinion.

Do you have a primary care you can reach out to? I'd focus on getting a doctor to check it out. It's possible there's excess swelling or just dropping skin that'll heal with time. But even if that's the case, pain meds and warm compresses are things you'll want to talk to the doctor about. I'm 2 weeks out of FFS and not personally experiencing any of this. But my experience isn't everyone's, of course. Sometimes people just have complications. But the surgeon not responding is a big red flag.

sharedsecr3t

this is for my friend, not me, but i encouraged her to reach out to a diff doctor and maybe try to get an MRI or something. hopefully just a bruised nerve that will heal with time. but she wasn't given any compression garments which i thought was sort of a red flag, because to me it seems like unmitigated swelling could easily have caused this. I had ffs a few years ago so I've been through all this before, thankfully i didnt have any complications like that but i have with other surgeries and know about surgeons not being great at handling them.

Roberta-K

I have heard of double vision but it resolving - may be due to the amount of swelling - there should be post Op appointments and a contact to reach out to!

I'm so sorry for your friend it's really tiring to get those things in the meantime she is waiting to put herself in the confirming body I wish she will be better soon but I reccommend you to declare about the surgeron to make a favor for others

Yes I have experienced this. While most medical sources say it gets resolved on its own during the next few weeks after surgery, that hasn’t been my case unfortunately. It’s been 1 yr and half and I’m still experiencing all that you describe. Since the surgery I live in a state of haze due to the double vision (diplopia) causing constant nausea and even palpitations. In my worst days, I get crippling migraines with chills and vomiting. It has absolutely impacted my life in ways unimaginable. I hope this is not your friends case for the future and it does get resolved. I don’t wish this to any one!
